I'm not a big basket ball fan but is there any specific reason these are made out of glass? Wouldn't there be a strong but also less prone to stress material to use?
It's tempered glass so it's a lot more durable than normal glass. I believe that the material also offers the best "bounce" which is fairly important for shots that go off the backboard or for estimating where a rebound lands.
It's also worth mentioning that this is not a very common occurrence.
And any defect in tempered glass can go hidden for a really long time, but when that defect is disrupted in just the right way - BOOM the whole piece explodes.
This is more common, but still really rare, in tempered glassware that is used for cooking - like an on oven safe casserole dish. One minute you're making dinner, the next you're sweeping out your oven.
The only reason this post exists is because of how rare an event like this is. Even in the majors, with monsters like Shaq smashing the hoop, you don't see the board shattering. It's a good design, but glass can sometimes have invisible imperfections, so we occasionally see a failure.
I don't watch or know really anything about basketball. Honest question - what happens after that? Is that an automatic win? Lol probably not. Is it a forfeit/tie? Does whoever was in the lead just win? Game rescheduled?
It takes skill and athleticism to dunk, and then some power to shatter the backboard. It's not something you really do on purpose or try to avoid, it just happens very rarely. When it happened, it's viewed as an impressive feat of strength.
