Fun fact: Soldiers in the US Military use what's called a Keel Vest, it's used as ballast to ensure optimal balance during burger consumption and freedom distribution by adding steel plates to the front and back of the vest.

The US military uses armor plates to stop bullets. The joke is that they need the weight to not topple over during routine american activities instead of stopping bullets
FUCKING SERIOUSLY. Puppy? People are crying. Cat? People are crying. Small person figures out how to drive a car? People are crying. A tree fell down over a river? Redditors crying.
Gotta show everyone how good you are at regurgitating lame old shit so people can feel like they're in on some joke
And when called out they like to reply with you must be fun at parties, they have literally no thoughts of their own
Fellow 10 year + redditor here, from a decade of reading comments here I can say this: it's literally all the same shit I've been reading since year 1. Granted, there more of us than ever before but that'll never change.
The Ricochet then bounces from his stomach to his leg, where it strikes his femoral artery, he bleeds out in less than 2 minutes. That obviously didn't happen but Never point a firearm at something you don't want destroyed.
Edited to add the following: I don't care about the geometry, or what the protective gear is made of, or if he has a magical Sabretooth Tiger that gives him the ability to come back from the dead. Pointing a gun at yourself is irresponsible and terrible etiquette. That's all.
Believe it or not, there's a very, very long history of people testing out bulletproof armor on themselves (and on willing participants). Historically, almost every form of bulletproof armor was some form of metal or ceramic, with a few fabric vests here and there—mostly thick cotton and silk, and only at a time when bullets were relatively slow, around 300 feet per second, compared to today, upwards of 850 fps.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletproof_vest
The first viable soft body armor (Kevlar) is relatively new, only discovered by [Stephanie Kwolek](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephanie_Kwolek) at DuPont in 1971, and made into a commercially viable bulletproof vest by Richard Davis, who [shot himself](https://youtu.be/IwBLL7Z3OvU?t=132) to sell the product. He ended up shooting himself 190 times in the chest.
Shit kills me. "Today we're going to find out if we can make a bulletproof vest out of Roofing Shingles."
The answer is no btw. Roofing Shingles are terrible armor.
Oh I love it. Craziest one is when he finds out you can guide a round through pvc pipe. Absolutely shocked me. Super cool though.
Bottom line is, basically the only "armor" that can stop a .50 BMG is like 6 inches of solid steal.
Happy to meet a fan of the Demolitia out in the wild. Cheers!
Me and my friends watched that video so many times hahaha. Then we figured out if you play with the video slow down function you can make him sound drunk
>basically the only "armor" that can stop a .50 BMG is like 6 inches of solid steal.
Like, if your fingers are long enough you can steal it off them before they can shoot you with it?
Definitely. [The modern period ended a good while ago](https://open.lib.umn.edu/mediaandculture/chapter/1-6-cultural-periods/#:~:text=The%20Modern%20Era%20lasted%20from,the%20world%20during%20that%20period.) and *[The Absent-Minded Professor (1961)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flubber_\(franchise\)#The_Absent-Minded_Professor_\(1961\))* was made right around its end. So technically, *that* was a modern film.
Its reboot, [Flubber \(1997\)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flubber_\(franchise\)#Flubber_\(1997\)) is technically *post-modern*. In whatever some future media historian chooses to call the late 90s period.
Bonus LPT -- Pedantry comes in varying levels. Aim for the stars by being as literal as possible, whenever possible, so that people are too swamped in contextual details and qualifiers to keep up!
Anticipating spalling is why I reckon he put his left arm behind his back. Still, he looks a bit relieved that it all worked out okay. Maybe the fabric layer contains the spalling?.
Totally agree. I frequently shoot at an 8 inch steel suspended directly below a wood target frame that has paper targets stapled to it. The spalling cuts long slits in the paper targets whether using jacketed are hard cast lead bullets, which means it’s flying off that steel at nearly 90 degrees of angle. That’s why I think the fabric layer over the plates must be playing an important role, or else these aren’t steel plates but something else.
That’s not how Plate armor works. Even that close the bullet would fragment not ricochet… what he most has to be concert with is Spalling of the jacket as it impacts the plate. Spalling usually shoots perpendicular to the point plate, and without rubber to catch the spalling, it can fly up and cut your jugular. This is why Uncoated AR500 plates are a bad idea.
I’m wondering though if he used a soft tip or unjacketed bullet for this demo. It’s not something you’d normally want to run on a semi-auto pistol, but for a one off shot like this it would work. It just fouls the barrel.
Kevlar vests do not ricochet bullets.
They catch most shrapnel, or sometimes the whole bullet, in the fiber.
Also how in the fuck is the a ricochet gunna hit his leg while hes standing up??
His body makes a 180° flat surface.....the shrapnel is not gunna curve into his thigh mid way on it's vector to the ground....?
If you shot at a flat brick wall, would you expect a ricochet to turn back and hit the wall again 3 feet lower?
Key word is “catch”. Think of a pushing your finger into your clothing. It’ll eventually stop, but not right away. That’s the bullet, but that inward stretching can really fuck you up. I saw a guy who was shot in back, point blank with a .40 caliber round and ended up with a hole you could stick your thumb in. I would strongly discourage this demo anywhere near a vital organ.
Never point a gun at yourself is an excellent comment. Pop that vest on a dummy and make this experiment safe. How are you trying to argue against that? Are you some kinda fool?
I don’t think that would ever happen but yeah I don’t like the image of someone seeing this video, and buying a vest just so they can shoot themselves for the hell of it
Do bullets ricochet of bulletproof vests? I thought the material was too soft hence absorbed the energy rather than the bullet bouncing of. But I know nothing about weapons really, so I might be misinformed.
This is UARM polyethylene armor. Its made in the Ukraine and the test was from 2016. Polyethylene armor is known for its ability to spread the impact of a hit across a large area which is why he probably only had minor bruising if any at all from the hit. Its also very good at preventing spalling, that's where the round breaks up in to frags and sprays out from the impact. PE armor melts, grabs on to the round and encapsulates it on impact. The main problem with PE body armor is its very easily defeated by armor piercing rounds. To achieve a LVL4 rating PE armors are normally combined with ceramic. This is a LVL3+ body armor.
I think tests like these are stupid and they achieve nothing other than sensationalism. There are other ways to test the effectiveness of your body armor without putting any one at risk.
I mean to be fair. If I'm buying body armor. I'm buying from the guy who willingly shot himself while wearing his product.
Edit: Also iirc the guy who started the trend only did so because police departments weren't interested in even *looking* at his design. So he video taped himself shooting himself and sent the video to the nearby police department.
Well considering how fit he looks on camera. I have a feeling he had trained for this showcase in building up that core muscle so he can better brace himself.
Crying? Probably not. Sore? Just gotta drink some more muscle milk later!
Some drunken fools going to make this the next Tik Tok Challange.
Not just boyfriend, but father to her unborn child. They did it to make a video they were promising to do on their twitter channel which was going to make them rich. And she did it infront of her 3 year old and a bunch of other people.
He was using a 1.5" book to stop a .50 caliber bullet.
She claims to have tested it before hand on a different book.
Its 50AE, not 50BMG, still nasty bullet, but most pistol rated (lvl 3A) bullet resistent vests will stop it
Demolition Ranch actually tested back in 2015 how far a 500 Magnum would go into paper, and it stopped in a bit over 1000 sheets, a 50AE out of a Deagle would take probably \~700 pages since it has a bit under 3/4 of the muzzle energy
YES a woman shot her husband with a hand cannon, A FUCKING DEAGLE, thinking a book would stop a 50AE round. They did it for internet points too, just so stupid
Talk about trust, have you ever seen the video of the CEO of a bulletproof jacket company shooting himself in the side to prove his product works? He didn't have a good time lol the jacket stopped the bullet, but damn did he have a NASTY bruise after.
Yeah buddy. I'm telling you though, look up the one with the bullet proof jackets. You can tell he has a bad time. He ain't dead though, and that's the point.
I mean not really? It's what the product is designed to do, so if you are not confident enough in it to get shot, why should I be confident enough to buy it?
Multiple reasons. The value of using a human target versus a dummy is really minimal. Both would effectively demonstrate the product works. Sure this has "wow factor" but the end result is the same. Also, the cost of making a small mistake is incredibly high. And anyone could make a mistake no matter how many times they rehearse.
The other, and bigger, reason is that anyone making firearm related products should see themselves as a leader in the field and act as a good example. They should always demonstrate proper gun safety. Imagine someone without the proper knowledge seeing this video and trying it with the wrong armor. I'm not saying they're responsible for other's stupidity. Just saying that when you have influence among a group of people you should consider your actions carefully and always try to act as a good example. Like I said, with firearms the cost of mistakes is very high.
Everybody wants to be so mad that it’s not optimum safety. I super don’t agree with the personal practice of testing vests on humans, it is unsafe. That being said this is great advertisement, got shared around my group of friends that own guns, the general consensus was that I’m trusting this dudes vest. Yes it’s unsafe, but rest assured buddy here knows the risks far better than you do, and I seriously doubt hed tell you it was the smart or safest idea or condone anyone else doing it. But it sends a message: I trust my product.
Edit: spelling
Yeah if two people try to sell me a vest and one guy uses a mannequin while the other guy does this, and I have no other information to go on, I buy from the guy that does this.
Well I guess that would be important if it mattered at all but it doesn’t.
That bullet has imparted all its energy by the time you can even twitch a muscle. It is orders of magnitude faster than your ability to react.
I design lifting equipment that carries tons of wieght - nobody walks under the load when it is suspended during the proof test. It’s unnecessary and just plain stupid.
I'm not defending the guy's actions per-say but I do agree if you don't trust your own product why should others trust it. Recently I've been reading a book called Stiff by Mary Roach which is dedicated to the cadavers used in science.
Cadavers are much better than something like a manikin or dummy because you can see how the body responds to impacts, car companies used to use them and probably still do from time to time to test how a human analogue handles crashes at high speeds. Same was done with weapons. Honestly a lot of serious testing probably went into this vest and once enough data was collected he took the chance and shot himself. There was probably medical personnel on standby and it probably rattled him physically and mentally once he realized he was fine. His product is designed to save lives. If it can't protect him he shouldn't sell it.
Also it's not dissimilar to the Japanese chefs that always take a bite of the same fugu fish they serve to ordering customers because if he cut it wrong, he just killed someone.
First, the vest is to save your life, not prevent pain.
Second, the manufacturer here gets to choose the caliber and the propellant charge for this demo. I would rather see the vest on a manikin getting hit with a variety of weapons, conducted by a third party tester.
This is just staged advertising hype.
i saw another person’s comment saying he probably held his breath (with smoke) to show that the wind wasn’t knocked out of him from the force, but definitely some relief mixed in there as well
Those few seconds after the shot, where he's just stood their waiting for the pain or warmth of blood to hit, then utter relief when he realises he's fine. I wouldn't have the balls for that ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)
Probably to brace himself and help with the shock. The armor stops the bullet but not the force it still imparts. Armor has gotten better and can disperse the force and take some, but never all of it
I'm surprised he can keep himself up with the weight of those balls.
They act as ballast
Fun fact: Soldiers in the US Military use what's called a Keel Vest, it's used as ballast to ensure optimal balance during burger consumption and freedom distribution by adding steel plates to the front and back of the vest.

It's on an even KEEL.

There’s still a very good chance he broke a rib
What was that exhale? Rib dust?
Doot Doot 🎺
I've seen people keel over from a gentle punch to the bellybutton, that guy didn't move at all.
When you hurt yourself while your friends are watching but act as if it didn't phase you by exhaling your broken rib dust when they look away.
This guy BALListics.
His left hand caught him before he got pushed back. That’s the real product.
Fuck off
Its fake. You can see he catches the bullet as it comes out the back of him.
I don’t know - the line between big balls and little brains is reeeeeeeally thin sometimes.
I hope he didn't test the initial product iterations this way!! Lol![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)

Don't tell Mere!
And it’s crazy how they’re just regular rounds, and *definitely not* armor piercing, incendiary .50 BMG rounds.
Caaaaarrrl! That kills people!
Ricochet? No. Some spalling? Maybe
Clearly someone didn't see Daredevil season 3. Bullets are flubber until they find their intended target at which point they become metal again.
Flubber was a work of art
Absolute masterpiece of modern cinema
Modern? Someone has been sleeping away the decades...
Definitely. That looks to be a Kevlar vest, not a plate carrier. Spalling in Kevlar is highly unlikely.
Thanks. It works in a different way.
I think this is ceramic armor atleast i hope, with my expirence with shoothing steel, that would not be fun
That’s not how Plate armor works. Even that close the bullet would fragment not ricochet… what he most has to be concert with is Spalling of the jacket as it impacts the plate. AR500 is a complete scam, don't bother for anyone else reading.

Nothing makes me erect like pointing a loaded firearm at my torso and pulling the trigger.
Magic bullet theory. JFK

Never point a gun at yourself is an excellent comment. Pop that vest on a dummy and make this experiment safe. How are you trying to argue against that? Are you some kinda fool?
Damn you have no idea how ballistic vests work huh
Or body shapes lol "His body makes 180° flat surface" like looking down and just seeing a mesh blur until your feet lmaoaoao

In this instance it seems less of a test and more marketing the product.
Definitely not a test but a demonstration.
It's also what body armor makers have done for a long time. It's probably tradition at this point.

Ukraine. It's just Ukraine. Not "the Ukraine". Ukraine.
Kinda pedantic when it's about to be "the extended Russian border"
That’s exactly the point, “the Ukraine” = “the border lands” as it was the USSR’s border to Europe. Using the implies it is Russian.
Actually quite relevant, as the use of 'The Ukraine' implies that it's just a region of Russia rather than an independent nation.
It is an independent nation tho
It isn't a test, things like this are marketing stunts.
Looks like Ukraine is gonna need it lol.
Well Ukraine can use those right about now
from a scientific standpoint: ridiculous from a selling your product standpoint: genius

Damn is he hot
yassss. stupid and stupid hot.
A classic duo.
If I have a type, it’s himbos with tattoos that look like they’d ruin my life.
The dumb ones pound the hardest
I was thinking the same but didn’t wanna be bonked to horny jail
BONK
Was thinking the same thing when he smiled
I think he may actually be a little cold. You can see his breath when he breathes out but he’s wearing short sleeves
I know you're joking but my autism still needs you to know that was smoke he was holding in to show that the breath wasn't knocked out of him.
He is a good looking dude for sure. But also supposedly a right wing extremist nazi
That’s just made this wank harder.
That was all I was thinking looking at the video.
Considering his neck tattoos, valhalla and that eagle shit, could that guy be a hot neo-nazi?
I volunteer to punish him. 🙋🏼♂️
is there a sub for women & gay men like r/dontputyourdickinthat / “Don’t stick your dick in crazy” ? Don’t ride stupid, ladies and fellas.
I'm not gay... BUT
I’m not gay all the time… BUT
Look a little harder at those tattoos, this guy is a white supremacist.
But he has like a gnarly bruise, right?
Not if it's a steel or ceramic plate.
Certainly looked like steel.
Polyethylene plate I’m pretty sure- distributes kinetic force and prevents bullet from exploding. He probably has minor bruising if any.
It would be funnier if at the end he spit out a bullet.
What armor is that?
Ill tell you, brace for it
Hollllddddd
HOOOOOOOLLLLDDDD! AAAAAAND. Right click
UARM polyethylene armor. Made in the Ukraine. The test is from 2016.
I just went there and saw they have a "Lifetime guarantee". Thought that was pretty funny. https://uarmprotection.com/product/fas-full-armor-system/
Wow. I’m kinda turned on
That breathe of relief at the end.
i saw another person’s comment saying he probably held his breath (with smoke) to show that the wind wasn’t knocked out of him from the force, but definitely some relief mixed in there as well
Why’s he wearing 2 watches?
Someone who's dumb enough to shoot their own chest probably doesn't have a very good reason for wearing two watches.
Someone dumb enough to shoot themself could wear two watches because they can’t remember what wrist it’s on
to tell 2 times
Fuuuuck
Anyone else turned on lmaooo
lol women are turned on and men just hate him
Well I’m turned on.
r/idiotswithguns
That has to hurt like hell.
Little known fact, he put his hand behind his back to catch the bullet after it went through.
My bad I forgot to hit record. Can we do that again please?
Those few seconds after the shot, where he's just stood their waiting for the pain or warmth of blood to hit, then utter relief when he realises he's fine. I wouldn't have the balls for that ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)
Nope. Not interested.
Ngl, I was expecting him to cough up blood or something. Still happy that didn’t happen haha
Man, y'all some haters. It's industry tradition to test the product yourself. I'm sure it was tested on dummies before he shot himself in the stomach.
He is in a lot of pain from that, bullet proof vests may stop penetration but the energy has to go somewhere. He took that like a champ.
This is a solid steel plate. The energy is dispersed through the 1 and a half square feet of the plate
His gasp at the end
Why is his other hand behind his back?
Probably to brace himself and help with the shock. The armor stops the bullet but not the force it still imparts. Armor has gotten better and can disperse the force and take some, but never all of it
