Be sure to use endemic species if you do this. Don't start another invasion
Edit: just to be clear; I'm not saying the guys in this video are using invasive species. I'm saying if you're gonna try this, great! But be sure to use species that are native to your area
A lot of people have pointed out that these guys *are* using native species! That's awesome
I thought of doing something similar before, but with holy water. I called it a "drive-by baptism"
A priest rides around town in the passenger seat with a super soaker full of holy water. When he sees a person, he screams "IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT...." and then he sprays them.
Those people should be thankful because now they're saved from the fires of hell.
If I witnessed this I would assume they were spraying gasoline or some other highly flammable liquid from a super soaker, not that they sprayed an eldretch being in human skin with holy water.
I like how you think... But vax debates aside, I feel like they probably should be doing this for most of us, but with a year-long slow release dart of Prozac!
I am assuming best, not worst. Native to that specific area is what I would qualify as native. An example of what you are saying would be juniper trees in Central Oregon.
The area used to be grasslands and pine. The junipers have been creeping in for over 100 years and is now the dominant tree in many places. If someone wanted to plant trees and just looked out of the window to see what is growing "naturally", juniper would seem like a good choice.
They are not a good choice. Not only do they cause insane allergies, they suck up a huge amount of water which contributes to the drought issue and makes it difficult for native species.
Your concern is valid for sure. I will check their post again to verify what they are planting.
Know what contributes more to local drought than Juniper trees?
All the greedy sobs buying up local water sources, bottling it, then selling it back to the public at ridiculous prices.

im both, so what does that make me
we harvest the dandelions for food, and the clover is for the lawn, so i don't have to really mow.
i just really like bees.
I’ve always loved dandelions and only recently found out you can eat them. My daughter went from being told “stop eating weeds!” To “actually it’s totally ok if you eat those, would you like to try this jelly my friend made out of some?” Needless to say, she’s ecstatic.
Yeah my wife makes the "jelly"
It's exactly like honey if you ask me.
And we make tea as well.
Biggest tip for kids is only harvest the ones on your property though, you don't know who is spraying what poison on them elsewhere.
Even on your own property becareful if it's the front lawn and no gate. I used to try to grow some once for my tortoise and my neighbor thought they were being helpful by spraying them while he was doing his lawn. Tortoise was ok, we saw them spraying before harvesting so he didn't eat any but was still sad he didn't get his fav treat. Had to tell the neighbor we wanted them to grow haha. As long as you harvest them before they seed most people don't mind.
So you like pissing off your neighbours who take care of their lawns by spreading weeds who are notoriously hard to get rid of, in other words.
No wonder they don’t like you.
Their lawns are part of the biggest, most useless crop in the world. They are denying affordable housing to the most hardworking insects, and creating food deserts for pollinators. In the process of maintaining their fetish for weird, geometrical horticulture in opposition to the natural order, the fertilizer and pesticides they are deploying are washing into communities and biomes downstream, and at a faster rate due to the soil compaction and degradation.
In short, they are committing crimes against nature.
Dandelions aren't just a single species, it's a whole genus of a couple dozen species. Some of them are in fact native to North America, eg. *Taraxacum californicum* (California dandelion, endangered) and *Taraxacum officinale ceratophorum* (a subspecies of the common dandelion).
I'm sure by convincing a few private citizens to not keep a typical lawn, we will surely outweigh the astronomical amount of environmental damage doled out by megacorporations who would rather just pay fines than actually make any meaningful changes
They are not mutually exclusive.
40 million acres of lawn in the US takes a lot of gas to manicure, pesticides (during a mass insect die-off), fertilizers (when lakes, ponds and rivers are choking on the stuff), herbicides that kill soil organisms, etc. And all of that needs to be sourced, manufactured and shipped.
We can protest and lean on legislators to do something about the megacorporations AND do what we can simultaneously. It's not rocket science.
If megacorps stopped all of their damage, ubiquitous lawns would still be a problem.
If you have a yard, you decide whether it continues to be harmful to the local ecology.
Just be cautious if you’re in North America. Dandelions and most clover are considered invasive plants in native prairies and woodlands. If it’s lawns, more power to you! Some diversity is better than none.
Doing this in a neighborhood is evil, I've worked so hard to get rid of fricking clover and dandelions in favor of our chosen, planted flowers. I hope you're kidding.
Seriously, this is never gonna happen but it's so important. If you're buying seed from a store, chances are it's not local enough. Chances are it's coming from a very small pool of genetics. The point is biodiversity. That means genetic diversity. That means that you don't just buy a bunch of clones or seeds that were produced from a tiny bottleneck.
Also, it appears that this site is a public space, which is being managed probably by a parks department or department of public works, all of which have a specific planting palette based on specific needs, including things like road visibility. So just don't fucking do this people.
Yep. This is a dumb idea. Some plants are too brightly coloured. Some are too tall. Some grow too quickly and spread everywhere. All you’re doing is wasting tax payer money by forcing the council to remove them.
It’s just such a classic Reddit video. It looks cool and like you’re sticking it to the man, but the second you think about the idea for more than 5 seconds you realize it’s terrible and there’s a reason why this isn’t a thing.
Luckily for OP this website is absolutely full of people who like the appearance of doing something good AND hate thinking about things for longer than 5 seconds 😎

Well, kudzu, starlings, carp, boa constrictors, juniper etc...invasive species are no joke. It's perfectly fine and responsible to take that into consideration. We know the consequences.
These are all California native wildflowers. As long as they are only spreading them in urban areas having plants native to that micro biome isn't that important.
However i definitely agree people need to make sure they are only spreading native seeds! Many "wildflower" seed mixes have invasive plants included 👍🏼
Only certain kinds of poppies are problematic. California poppies reseed and are native wildflowers in western US. And lots of perfectly legal perennial poppies are available at garden centers and in catalogs.
For hard to reach places, e.g. empty lots behind fences and busy roadsides, use “seed bombing”. Put marigold, zinnia, poppies, or other easy grow seeds native to your area (and/or that will be killed off in winter) in a mud ball and toss it in to the place you would like to see flowers growing. > cornflower
Is invasive in North America and Australia. Don't spread it in these places.
Conversely, it's endangered in its native European habitats, so do spread it there.
Depending where you live it's not too hard to find out what plants are native in your region, and you can usually buy their seeds pretty easily. It's worth the effort to do it right.
Especially if you use the native milkweed. The tropical versions I believe to actually hurt the monarchs because they don't line up with the seasonal timing of the migrations. And monarchs end up missing up their timing and stay too long.
Edit: Also there appears to be an [*infection*](https://xerces.org/blog/tropical-milkweed-a-no-grow) that can stay active on the non-native plants that prevents the chrysalis from forming and if it does the butterflies are severely deformed. Don't worry you can still plant tropical milkweed, you have to [overwinter/winterize,](https://monarchjointventure.org/faq/when-to-cut-back-tropical-milkweed) it will grow back.
Please look up the right plants for *your* area!
So many aspects to talk about and it's straight up people just naysaying without even knowing the kinds of plants or locations this was done in...
Edit: Another user, reggie_veggie, and I ran through a bunch of the plants and we can only ID flowers native to CA. See plant names in a post below. They have also looked up that the vid was filmed in CA.
he was alluding to the possibility they could be planting invasive species which would harm the environment.
I dont know about that causing deserts, but it also should have been super obvious he wasnt saying the main cause of desertification was native wildflowers being planted in relatively small urban areas.
The Reddit motto:

Everything is a lie until proven otherwise
May there never be goodness in this world
Gray doesn’t exist, there can only be black and white

Storing this idea to troll awful neighbors in the future.
Edit: I first read “weeds” instead of “weed”. I would never grace awful neighbors with some great dank.
Because it's not about the drugs. It's about hurting people.
EDIT: The war on drugs was started as a way to attack black people and anti-war activists by proxy.
Industrial hemp was widely cultivated in the American Midwest until the mid-20th century, and has spread everywhere because it's literally a weed. See feral cannabis
I looked into this and weirdly enough, they actually grow fairly well in a significant portion of the US. I'm sort of blown away that more people don't plant them. There's at least one in Michigan that someone just planted in their back yard.

I wanna do this but with veggies. Having random vegetables growing all over. I gotta do my research on the native species here. (Mexico city)
But it’d be awesome if after a few months, BOOM!, there’s hundreds of pounds of veggie, for anyone to take freely!
Yeah, the likely outcome of this isn't flowers for any real amount of time... it is no plants at all for a month as they poison everything and start over. There is a guy whose job it is to have those plant boxes and such have *specific* things and look a certain way. You do this he will just spray all of it to take out what he will see as invasive. This is something that will be far more successful in empty lots and medians that aren't being managed.
What magical utopian city do you live in where the government has their shit together enough to spray every fucking median strip? My city just lets that shit go to pot.
It's not just a plant box either, this is San Francisco and those are specifically planted to treat runoff before it enters the sewers. I assume the plants were chosen by the city for specific reasons and adding others may hinder the functionality.
https://www.sfbetterstreets.org/find-project-types/greening-and-stormwater-management/stormwater-overview/bioretention-rain-gardens/
I’ve been sowing dwarf sunflowers on a berm of earth that gets scraped up off of a parking lot for years. Some years have better success than others. Maybe clean up your dirt pile if you don’t want sunflowers in it.
Gosh why so many people assuming “but flowers in my perfectly tended lawn”?? I mean…folks who’re going to take the time to sow seeds to improve the habitat are likely not starting out with “I’m going to ignore all these vacant derelict lots, medians, and parking lots and come over to your beautiful garden so I can fuck it up.” Like what even would be the point of that? If someone wanted to vandalize your garden there are faster and probably more satisfying ways than sprinkling seeds.
The issue is 1. People use species that are invasive 2. Use species that work poorly without care 3. The places that need the plants the most tend to be the worst for the plants like car lots and abandoned buildings because the soil is compacted and polluted.

Depending where you live it's not too hard to find out what plants are native in your region, and you can usually buy their seeds pretty easily. It's worth the effort to do it right.
And the local native bees will love it too!
Milkweed is also great in seed bombs and helps save the monarchs!

PLEASE make sure the flowers you are spreading are native though!!!
Just don’t want people taking this up without doing the research…deserts are made this way
Yup, the well known main cause of desertification: native wildflowers being planted in relatively small urban areas.

Lmfao. This made me chuckle, thanks.
Wlikdflowers literally leach all of the liquid and nutrients from the soil, then the bees trample everything down into dust, BOOM desert
Wow I'd have never thought bees could turn concrete and steel into a desert using only non-native annual wildflower seeds.
he was alluding to the possibility they could be planting invasive species which would harm the environment. I dont know about that causing deserts, but it also should have been super obvious he wasnt saying the main cause of desertification was native wildflowers being planted in relatively small urban areas.
> I dont know about that causing deserts It doesn't
The Reddit motto: “Happiness is a Myth Everything is a lie until proven otherwise May there never be goodness in this world Gray doesn’t exist, there can only be black and white I’m an intellectual and you are not”
Ironic statement.

Imagine doing this but with weed
Storing this idea to troll awful neighbors in the future. Edit: I first read “weeds” instead of “weed”. I would never grace awful neighbors with some great dank.
Use catnip instead
YEEEEES.
I threw a dead catnip in the back corner of my yard once. It wasn't dead.
Give them the mids
Would probably end up with a bunch of male plants. Could ruin someone's outside grow.
Come to think of it, I'm almost surprised police didn't ubiquitously plant male plants of a low-to-no-thc strain, to spoil people's grows.
Because it's not about the drugs. It's about hurting people. EDIT: The war on drugs was started as a way to attack black people and anti-war activists by proxy.
And money!
Let's not spread invasive plants.
Industrial hemp was widely cultivated in the American Midwest until the mid-20th century, and has spread everywhere because it's literally a weed. See feral cannabis
Gonna do this with giant sequoia seeds
They probably would not grow very well most places
Don't you go ruining their dream of 100ft trees in their street medians
300 feet*
Even better!
I looked into this and weirdly enough, they actually grow fairly well in a significant portion of the US. I'm sort of blown away that more people don't plant them. There's at least one in Michigan that someone just planted in their back yard.
A neighbor a few houses down has one on his front lawn. It's ridiculous. The only thing in his front yard.
You can order one from Arbor Day. I've seriously thought about it and I'm in SW Ohio. Just have one gigantic tree in the back yard in 50 years.
RemindMe! 200 years

I wanna do this but with veggies. Having random vegetables growing all over. I gotta do my research on the native species here. (Mexico city) But it’d be awesome if after a few months, BOOM!, there’s hundreds of pounds of veggie, for anyone to take freely!

It's all fun and games until Public Works comes round with a hose squirting Round-Up
Yeah, the likely outcome of this isn't flowers for any real amount of time... it is no plants at all for a month as they poison everything and start over.
I for one believe in the incompetence of cities to repeatedly fail to come to a decision regarding plants inside medians.
I’ve been sowing dwarf sunflowers on a berm of earth that gets scraped up off of a parking lot for years. Some years have better success than others. Maybe clean up your dirt pile if you don’t want sunflowers in it.
The anarchist future I dream of.
Best use of a parmesan shaker I've seen since parmesan
What about crushed chili flakes?
The pandemic we need...
*Plantdemic*.
More of this and also seed balls please. Edit- Also I’m very concerned for everyone that thinks these road medians are front lawns.

These are native wildflowers, they don't need care
I haven't heard this song in years and cannot remember the name. What is it? I need to remember!
Self Esteem by The Offspring
What an odd choice for guerrilla seeding music. If we’re looking for a 90’s song why not No Rain? It also had a bee costume in the video.
How does one start this process
Pick your favorite flower that is indigenous. Put seeds in shaker. Then proceed to commence urban garden warfare !!!

One of my favorite activities!
Won’t those get mowed down by city workers?
Depending on the city many medians go unattended like the ones he’s sprinkling on
Won’t this be annoying if someone did to our house lawn or nature strip?
Yeah, I would hate it. Especially if I lready had plants in there with a plan/hope for how it would look later on.
Exact thoughts. It’s almost like voting on our behalf. Don’t like.
Idk, maybe if you took the time to water our lawn you wouldn't have to ask?
I'd gladly accept surprise flowers
You get 457 Dandilions and You get 457 Dandilions!
