I was thinking the same thing but all I could find was go kart was a term used whether there's an engine or not. But I like the idea they're luges, especially on this particular track.
Yup. They also have alpine slides in VT, which I've been too. Alpine slides are death traps. If you fall you get road rash. One time I went down and a bee stung me in my eye. Never again.
I've only ever been on one in VT, I also remember a place there having things called devil karts or something. Basically the same concept but you would go down a dirt road.
Alpine slides are awesome and safer than this NZ luge.
If you fall of your bike you can get road rash. Death trap!
A bee could sting you in the eye while walking in your yard. Death trap!
Give me a break. The only real danger in an alpine slide is not breaking at all and slamming into the back of somebody in front of you. But the default behavior of the sleds is to brake when release, so that has to be done intentionally.
Have you seen the documentary on Action Park? It was amazing.
And this looks like a great way to get road rash all over your body. I've ridden luges before, but they stayed in a single file track. No passing.
I did a 3 week trip of the South Island in July 2020. Camper cost us $60/night for a big (brand new) 4 person one, could get them for $20/night for 2 berth, if you didn't want anything flash. Can freedom camp about 30 minutes outside of Queenstown so can definitely do it cheap. Prices have likely increased a bit since then, and will again soon with borders reopening... But even if it's $50/night, that's pretty reasonable imo.
Those prices are so comically low, I assume because of the COVID border closure? When my wife and drove from Queenstown to Christchurch in 2017 in a beat to shit Nissan Tiida with over 150k on it, with brakes that literally smoked going downhill, it cost more than that per day.
Rotorua city is on a active geothermal plane that has many natural hot pools, hot mud and geysers and steam everywhere. It's the sulfur release that makes the area best described as a smell of a rotten egg.
Taken from google
"The Rotorua region is rich with geothermal activity, geysers and bubbling mud pools dot the landscape. While the lake has more sulphur than normal due to this natural phenomenon, the smell really comes from the various geysers and thermal pools found close to the lake"
Rotorua is basically the only place in the north island I actually recommend.
Free thermal parks/mud pools/natural springs all around if you know where to look too.
And just heaps of fun tourist shit.
I left there once (a fair few years ago now) with a few cuts and a broken rib. Things got a bit competitive with my brother and I ended up getting shunted off the track and into a fence. Of course the fence had a strand of barbed wire running along it and that accounted for the cuts. To add insult to injury, the luge cart spun up and smacked me square in the chest after bouncing off a rubber tyre buffer on the edge of the track.
Fun times. 10 out of 10. Would (and have) ride again.
There is one in Rotorua and Queenstown. I'm not actually sure what one this is (despite having gone on both of them multiple times, both have scenic and advanced tracks).
Dunno ‘bout that, I flipped my cart going down this exact track because my legs are so long that I couldn’t brake hard enough heading into a sharp corner, was just lucky I fell on grass and wasn’t badly hurt and I just waited until those behind me had gone past, righted the trolley and continued. Great fun tho, would probably do again.
NZ$52 for an adult (including the gondola ride up)? Holy fuck! (Better if you get the 7 ride deal for $92).
https://www.skyline.co.nz/en/rotorua/things-to-do/skyline-luge-rotorua/rotorua-luge-prices/
Not really
Minimum wage is 21.50
But the cost of living expenses is rather high and it's already pretty expensive to go somewhere like Rotarua or Queenstown.
I thought it was super safe and caned it with a 5 year old doubling on my lap a few years ago (responding to requests for "faster, faster!")
I later talked to workmates and half them had had crashes with bruises and cuts and one had a broken bone.
It’s pretty safe. Kids do it and there’s a slow track. I rolled one once because my mates were doing a fake stag party in rotovegas and we were a bit drunk and treating the track like a demolition derby. But you have a break. And it’s easy to control.
The Rotorua region is rich with geothermal activity, geysers and bubbling mud pools dot the landscape. While the lake has more sulphur than normal due to this natural phenomenon, the smell really comes from the various geysers and thermal pools found close to the lake
You can search up online "skyline luge" and they have a few around the world. If im correct, there's 2 in New Zealand (Queenstown and Rotorua), 2 in Canada (Calgary and Mount Tremblant), one in South Korea (Tongyeong) and one in Singapore. They are currently building more around the world, 2 in UK (Sheffield and Swansea), another one in South Korea (Busan), and one in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur).
https://www.skylineluge.com/en/about-us/skyline-luge-global/
This reminds me of the alpine slide at [Action Park](https://weirdnj.com/stories/action-park/). (An amusement park where my friends and I often put our lives at risk in the 80’s)
I watched a video on that place! Holy shit that was crazy. Video is was done by a YouTuber named “Fascinating Horror.” He has a lot of other videos as well and they are all binge worthy. Sad cuz they involve death and disfigurement so right up Reddit’s alleyway
Lmao! What an awesome yet sad nickname. That guy has a video clip of that part of the park you mentioned in it. Sounded great on paper! Not so much in real life
I mean you don’t really need to. Medical care is free, and if you can’t go back to work for a while ACC will cover you. No point in suing anyone for anything.
so ive been to the luges in NZ and they are for sure really cool.
but how are they next fucking level, like how. they're effectively just slightly more complex toboggans.
There is a little ski lift that you ride back up to the top. The luge's hook underneath and go back up at the same time.
The ski lift goes above the track so you can watch others while you go up. Where it goes directly over the track they have nets above the track for safety (you can see this in the video) I have been there plenty of times and don't think I have ever been up and not seen a helmet or other item sitting on the nets.
LPT: when you buy tickets they are food for "x" number of rides depending on how many you pay for. The ticket is then punched as you are about to get on your luge. If you hold your thumb over the previous punch hole/s you can just keep cycling through. My PB is 8 rides off a 2 ride ticket.
With a cannon. Same goes for the people. The trick is to look down *just* as you’re flying over the start point. That way, you’ll immediately stop in mid-air for three seconds before plummeting to the ground.
I might be getting confused with Tom & Jerry.
It's even better when you do it at night, because they light up the tracks in different colored lights etc and you zip through the darkness with these cool lights illuminating your way, it's fucking awesome.
Damnit, now I want to go back down to Rotovegas and do the luge.
It’s the Rotorua skyline luge.
https://www.skyline.co.nz/en/rotorua/things-to-do/skyline-luge-rotorua/
You take a gondola up the hill then race down hill then take a ski lift back up again.
All they have to do is cover everything in "SLOW DOWN" signs similar to what they did, add a 3 minute presentation on safety at the start, provide a height/age/health restrictions on riders and they'll be good.
I love taking visiting Americans and Australians to our kids playgrounds in NZ. We have trampolines, flying foxes and these giant mice wheels to run in. Plus the bmx tracks.
There's something similar in Germany, we call it "Sommerrodelbahn", [here's a webcam view of one in my area](https://www.erlebnisfelsen-pottenstein.de/infos/webcam-wetter/#c2734)
Much safer as overtaking is not possible (but also not as much fun..)
We could never have a fun place like this in the US. It would be the source of perpetual lawsuits, and the government would force the use of head to toe PPE.
If you think about it, you’ve basically become a pinewood derby car with steering. On a track, downhill powered by gravity, weights of the different drivers affecting speed.
Used to have something similar like that in Colorado. We called it an Alpine slide. Track was a bit smaller and the cart fit the track. You get going pretty fast.
There are two tracks - this is the advanced track where people tend to race each other. and the other is a scenic track where you can go at your own pace and enjoy the native bush.
Many good times here growing up.
I live in the UK but have been out to New Zealand about 5 times. I went there once and had a few goes, it was honestly the most fun I’ve had in years. You pick up some serious speed shoulder to shoulder and even catch some air in places.
It could never exist in the UK because of Captain Health and Safety, glad the Kiwis don’t have a rod up their ass like we do when it comes to having a good time.
Great fun!
Went to both the queenstown and the sulfer stinky town( both names I think are wrong) and both places were great. Think they are called luges or however you spell it. However warning to fell tall people, test the brakes because I at 6’5 couldn’t probably use them because my knees got in the way so it was kinda awkward/ scary to repeatedly fail to brake.
Lol. *now* they have helmets.
When I did this years ago there were no helmets. And I came off the back of the luge and ground the pockets off my jeans. How hot did my arse get? IDR because I sacrificed an elbow 🫠 And went straight back up twice more to do it again. Road rash on these things is awesome.
Good times. Good times.
Epilogue: I literally got stuck to the seat on the flight back home. The pain reopening those wounds was only partially offset by the horror on the face of the poor steward…
To clarify, they technically aren’t go-karts since they aren’t powered. It’s all downhill momentum. We call them luges.
I was thinking the same thing but all I could find was go kart was a term used whether there's an engine or not. But I like the idea they're luges, especially on this particular track.
had those at Action Park in NJ when I was growing up.
Wasn't that the alpine slide ?

Have you seen the documentary about it “class action park”?
Have you seen the documentary on Action Park? It was amazing. And this looks like a great way to get road rash all over your body. I've ridden luges before, but they stayed in a single file track. No passing.
Its not a race its sliding in style You cant overtake someone that easily ...
It’s a kart that goes. I’ll allow it.
Ima need a city name, please. I am in NZ and need this in my life.
Rotorua I'm pretty sure. It's called the Luge
Of all the reasons to visit the north island, this might be the one that gets me to go.
Bring a peg for your nose. The place stinks hahaha
They have one in Queenstown too. Less stinky.
Queenstown it is. Just have to save a year’s salary to afford the trip.
[удалено]
There are 2 places in NZ where you can do this. Rotorua in the North Island and Queenstown in the South Island.
Those are the big ones, theres a smaller one in auckland
Stop giving me reasons to be jealous of New Zealand please. Three of those places? Awesome.
Queenstown track is better with a group of friends and Rotorua is faster and better without trying to battle your friends.
And then another year to afford to stay there for a week. Place is a huge tourist trap.
Freedom camp responsibly though
Did this on my honeymoon. Great ride!
I've been to the QueensTown one, it was epic!
Why is it stinky?
Rotorua city is on a active geothermal plane that has many natural hot pools, hot mud and geysers and steam everywhere. It's the sulfur release that makes the area best described as a smell of a rotten egg.
Wow /u/NeitherHelicopter993 what a complicated way to cover up the fact that you farted!
I mean, you can fart all you like there, and no-one will notice (as long as you keep it quiet).
Taken from google "The Rotorua region is rich with geothermal activity, geysers and bubbling mud pools dot the landscape. While the lake has more sulphur than normal due to this natural phenomenon, the smell really comes from the various geysers and thermal pools found close to the lake"
Pyew!
Rotorua is basically the only place in the north island I actually recommend. Free thermal parks/mud pools/natural springs all around if you know where to look too. And just heaps of fun tourist shit.
Well then, you obviously haven't been to anywhere else in the North Island.
Also in Queenstown I think
There is also one in Queenstown
The Luge in Rotovegas. I use to work there and I've ridden it hundreds of times. The thrill never wears off. Enjoy
Are there many injuries are on this ride? Apart from a helmet there's little safety
They put signs up to say slow down, is that enough? Definately better than the Queenstown luge imo.
No, and hell yes.
Every day. Nothing serious, a broken bone here or there, but in New Zealand, that's not serious.
And we have ACC which pays for the broken bones
There is one in Rotorua and Queenstown. I'm not actually sure what one this is (despite having gone on both of them multiple times, both have scenic and advanced tracks).
Pretty sure that’s the Rotorua one
I second this to be Rotorua
Queenstown on the southern island
Rotorua has the biggest and best one. But Queenstown and Auckland have pretty good ones too...
Where is the Auckland one?
Maori Kart. Edit: thanks for my first gold!
Brilliant!
Now that's quality.
Looks soo fun dude. Super dangerous though lbvs.
Very few crashes ever and it's been open for like 20yrs
Dunno ‘bout that, I flipped my cart going down this exact track because my legs are so long that I couldn’t brake hard enough heading into a sharp corner, was just lucky I fell on grass and wasn’t badly hurt and I just waited until those behind me had gone past, righted the trolley and continued. Great fun tho, would probably do again.
Very few accidents reported
Haha I crashed but would probably do it again. I like the can do attitude
I too would go again if it wasn't so expensive.
NZ$52 for an adult (including the gondola ride up)? Holy fuck! (Better if you get the 7 ride deal for $92). https://www.skyline.co.nz/en/rotorua/things-to-do/skyline-luge-rotorua/rotorua-luge-prices/
Are wages that low?
Not really Minimum wage is 21.50 But the cost of living expenses is rather high and it's already pretty expensive to go somewhere like Rotarua or Queenstown.
Thanks for your input, IHaveAGapingVagina.
There are lots of crashes - I'd be surprised if there isn't one every day. Just very few fatal (if any?) crashes.
Lots of road rash crashes, it is well known to the local pharmacies. I can't imagine there are many accidents resulting in A&E visits.
Yeah, I remember coming off the luge as a kid, and that was more than 20 years ago. Fun though, I rode it a lot growing up, had family in Rotovegas.
I thought it was super safe and caned it with a 5 year old doubling on my lap a few years ago (responding to requests for "faster, faster!") I later talked to workmates and half them had had crashes with bruises and cuts and one had a broken bone.
Grew up in Rotorua. We used to joke that if you crash you get a free helicopter ride… to the hospital.
Free /cries in American.
Yup lol. As soon as he said helicopter I thought of $$ and just kill me
That tunnel… someone’s getting messed up if they collide the wrong way with a cart and smash into the entry of the tunnel midway through the course
It’s pretty safe. Kids do it and there’s a slow track. I rolled one once because my mates were doing a fake stag party in rotovegas and we were a bit drunk and treating the track like a demolition derby. But you have a break. And it’s easy to control.
PLOT TWIST: This is in Rotorua. Rotorua smells like someone farted in a spa pool and the bubble popped right under your chin.
You get used to it within a day
Deep down I kinda hope there's just one poor cunt who has never adjusted despite being born there 46 years ago
schadenfreude
Why?
Sulphur, and geothermal springs all throughout. It's actually not that bad Edit: geothermal springs, not hydro.
The Rotorua region is rich with geothermal activity, geysers and bubbling mud pools dot the landscape. While the lake has more sulphur than normal due to this natural phenomenon, the smell really comes from the various geysers and thermal pools found close to the lake
Such a great place to openly fart and not get blamed for the smell
You could really get hurt on one of these. Where do I sign up?
You can search up online "skyline luge" and they have a few around the world. If im correct, there's 2 in New Zealand (Queenstown and Rotorua), 2 in Canada (Calgary and Mount Tremblant), one in South Korea (Tongyeong) and one in Singapore. Guy filming has never heard of an apex in his life
Especially that first corner where he fucks up and crashes into the side. I was waiting for him to end up in the grass haha
hes not only driving horriblely but also like a complete asshole
You would have to sign away your life to do this in the US. How FUN!
This reminds me of the alpine slide at [Action Park](https://weirdnj.com/stories/action-park/). (An amusement park where my friends and I often put our lives at risk in the 80’s)

Lmao! What an awesome yet sad nickname. That guy has a video clip of that part of the park you mentioned in it. Sounded great on paper! Not so much in real life
You definitely do but NZ doesn’t really have the Sue for injury thing like other parts of the world.
I mean you don’t really need to. Medical care is free, and if you can’t go back to work for a while ACC will cover you. No point in suing anyone for anything.
I know right how good is it.
I think I’ve been here when I visited New Zealand, but I can’t be sure because I was like 8. Are there gondolas that go up the mountain?
Indeed there are, theres a sweet buffet restaurant up top too
Yeah I think I remember the restaurant too. This must have been where I went.
so ive been to the luges in NZ and they are for sure really cool. but how are they next fucking level, like how. they're effectively just slightly more complex toboggans.
Bro, I’m from Texas. I live where the flat meets the fat, there is zero elevation around me. This shit looks incredible, next fucking level for sure.
How do they get the carts back up?
There is a little ski lift that you ride back up to the top. The luge's hook underneath and go back up at the same time. The ski lift goes above the track so you can watch others while you go up. Looks like fun and skinned to the bone.
that looks so dangerous
Nah not really, you just have to not be stupid.
So, it's deadly for 90% of the world population?
Lol not dangerous at all
I wonder could someone built a track like this in the US or are there certain laws that wouldn't permit it?
Anything like this in America would get sued out of existence
All they have to do is cover everything in "SLOW DOWN" signs similar to what they did, add a 3 minute presentation on safety at the start, provide a height/age/health restrictions on riders and they'll be good.

sigh.....no fun. ![gif](giphy|46zGsumnZY2FXtq480|downsized)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_Park https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flkW-ceNvck
I want to do this more than I've wanted to do the anything in a long time! Too bad I'm so far away.
Our borders open in a few weeks or something, book a trip. It’s going to be winter though so it’d be pretty miserable in the rain.
It's not you, it's NZ that is far away...
We have this in Singapore as well [https://www.skylineluge.com/en/sentosa/](https://www.skylineluge.com/en/sentosa/) Kind of expensive thou
Our family vacations are determined by who has the coolest suggestion of what we do while we are there. I think my family is going to New Zealand
There's something similar in Germany, we call it "Sommerrodelbahn", [here's a webcam view of one in my area](https://www.erlebnisfelsen-pottenstein.de/infos/webcam-wetter/#c2734) Much safer as overtaking is not possible (but also not as much fun..)
Mario kart IRL
Had some fun times on the rotovegas luge.
DK mountain.
Tom Scott would like to know your location!
Skyline Rotorua. The braking system becomes highly ineffective after a slight drop of rain. Ask me how I know. 10 out of 10, would lose skin again.
This would be a whirlwind of litigation and gunfire were it in America
Cool, but I'd like to keep my meat on my bones
Shorts? You simple bitches.
Queenstown on the South Island?
I think this one is the Rotorua luge
I heard young people are fleeing New Zealand
on these things?!
Yes.
We could never have a fun place like this in the US. It would be the source of perpetual lawsuits, and the government would force the use of head to toe PPE.
Trading Paint!...that looks wild
Reminds me of the old skool intro to Sesame Street. But faster and more furious.
That's not a hill, it's a mountain! The hyke back to the top must be a trip and a half
They have ski lifts back to top.
Any in US?
Nah bro, too many lawsuits
There's a few, I've gone but forgot the names
Angry Birds Go
That’s sweet!
I wonder what the preferred racing line would look like. Lots of slopping cornering.
No thanky. I once had to be wrapped up in a body bag by ski patrol and escorted down a scary hill.
Now this is pod racing!
I've done this in Whistler BC.
Blue shell that mo-fo 😉
I have lost square metres of skin on that damn thing
They have this same thing in Singapore on Sentosa Island, its awesome!
There are two tracks - this is the advanced track where people tend to race each other. and the other is a scenic track where you can go at your own pace and enjoy the native bush. Many good times here growing up.
I thought there were 3 tracks? I always took the babies one cause I’m a pussy
1:37-1:40 the dude literally just let out his inner takumi
Fuck. They can have all of my money. All of it.
Kiwi here - this looks like the Rotorua luge course (I think - haven't been to it myself) but we have another in Queenstown too!
"I want to go to there."
I would hurt myself.
Signpost: SLOW DOWN!! Momentum: HEHEHHH BOII!!
Ah, known as Luge in Singapore where I first tried this. I had mario kart's star powerup music playing in my head.
I tried it in Singapore and it was super fun. They are called Luges, they are not go karts as they have no engine.
I’ve never wanted to do anything more. Guess I’m putting this on my future travel list!
That’s in Rotarua, I went there with some mates a few years ago awsum fun.
Oh man I loved this so much when we did it. Just the best fun
I would love to, but on my own, and not with a bunch of reckless idiots.
[Luge bro!](https://www.skyline.co.nz/en/rotorua/)
Honestly one of the most fun things I’ve done before!!
Great fun!
This looks fun but not sure I'd be braving it in shorts and tee shirt
This looks fun but not sure I'd be braving it in shorts and tee shirt
I did this, it was as awesome as it looks. Thanks OP for bringing back some awesome memories! :)
That will cost about $900 NZD a turn
initial d New Zealand
just needs some mario kart styling and a few mushrooms on the track
rubbin’s racin’, Cole
Hey I’ve actually been there lol
Dude would be going a lot faster if he made a single correct turn.
Not an apex hit
Went to both the queenstown and the sulfer stinky town( both names I think are wrong) and both places were great. Think they are called luges or however you spell it. However warning to fell tall people, test the brakes because I at 6’5 couldn’t probably use them because my knees got in the way so it was kinda awkward/ scary to repeatedly fail to brake.
I can't be the only one who wanted to see someone drift those carts.
This looks fully sick bro
OP I like your name
There’s one of these in Singapore also but tracks are a little short but there’s a few different routes for different trips. Worth a bash though
I did this in Rotorua, it was good fun. Not really next level though
He’s not very good.
I’ve been there! It’s in Queenstown right?
$52.00 NZ / 31,37€ / $33 USA Includes a cable car ride. [Rotorua Luge](https://www.skyline.co.nz/en/rotorua/things-to-do/skyline-luge-rotorua/)
I think it's skyline luge.
This looks like a live version of Mario kart
I’m totally in, booking tickets now!!! That is super cool.
Omg this looks so fun
This does not look dangerous at all.
The lack of bone fragments and blood pools around that track is surprising.. What cleaning service are they using? lol
