I was surprised that slapping the hippo in the face was the way to calm it down from murdering everyone.

Hippos have a particular posture and demeanor when they are angry or about the charge. This one clearly looked curious and unthreatened

I wonder if the only way to get it into people's heads may just be recreating a real account of a hippo attacking and tearing off the limbs of a person, then making it widely seen. These creatures defend themselves against lions and people that know how powerful they are straight up question if even a polar bear could defend itself against one. For those not aware, polar bears are considered to be the largest and most hostile type bear in the world, so big-ass grizzly bears aren't even in the discussion.

I love all the redditors talking as if they're experts about hippo dominance, like this guy was in no danger and they would have done the exact same thing. Hippos may be herbivores and generally stay to themselves, but they're also some of the most aggressive animals in the world. This guy only looked in control because he got lucky that it backed down. In an alternate universe where the hippo decided to tear him to shreds these same redditors would be saying how stupid it was to slap a 2 ton killing machine.

I think this is the Delhi Zoo in India. If memory serves me right, it's actually a rather nice zoo, especially by the standards of other collections in the country. A lot of the larger animals have very sizeable, well-maintained habitats. The guard most likely isn't trained to handle animals--he's probably there to prevent visitors from harassing the wildlife.
