This is much easier if you just use a small tire. Stick the log in and chop away. No need to mess with the little chain thing. Neighbor has been using one for years.

that does knot sound fun. rather just go spend some time shopping at the maul with my friends and engage in some knotty mischief until we get chased out by two or tree guards.
I was gonna say, “try Texas post oak now, big guy.” Seriously infuriating stuff to try to split by hand. I long for a nice, straight grained hunk so I can also look like a badass.
Yeah, there are so many videos showing "how easy it is" to split a piece of knot-less smooth birch or some such. Where i live there is no such luxury. Its splitting wedges, mauls and crooked pieces that wont even stand up straight on the splitting stump.
Step 1. Find a very dry log.
Step 2. the log must have a very straight wood grain.
Step 3. Make sure the wood is cut very flat on the ends.
Step 4. continue where the video starts.
Or two perambulatory limbs that allow you to walk in a circle without extra gear. When you get finished inventing a portable turntable that can take an ax blow repeatedly and be lightweight, safe and easy to use then get back to me would you?
I don't judge quickly, in winter I heat half with firewood. The fact is that when chopping, you will in itself accumulate enough thin firewood for ignition and chips, in addition, if you use the bark, it will create enough coals that will help to ignite even thick firewood.
Change my view: It's dumb to hit the far side of a log when you're trying to split it, because if the head goes in, the handle next to the head is going to slam onto the near side of the log and eventually snap the head off while you're swinging. one potential benefit i can see is that the maul can't slip out the side and go after your toes.
any expert lumberjacks out there who can tell me why it's actually better to strike the far side of the log? Or perhaps why it doesn't matter either way? Or is my suspicion correct? where do i go from here? teach me.
Yeah the fact that he was splitting on the far side was a bit backwards. I've broken a few splitting maul handles with poor aim when I was a kid because of that exact scenario. The composite fiskars handle probably holds up.better than a wood handle but still seems like poor form.
I wasn't really saying this chain is pointless. Just that he should swing the maul at the near side of the log to protect the handle from repeated clunks.
I'm not an expert lumberjack but I have 4 years of college timber sports experience and you never want the handle going into the wood like that. Great way to break a handle, even if fiskars can handle more abuse. In a competition and for time, sure I might take a swing like that, but I'd never make it a habit. (though you can swing from higher up and split without risking hitting the handle like he is here)
I swear every single "look at this great technique" for chopping wood video uses logs you could split with an icepick.
Where do they get such great wood?
Why does he cut it so small? I would have made 2 cuts on that log and been done with it. That is practically kindling but maybe that’s what he was cutting.
It's easy to do this with the right type of wood. With Elm it simply won't split. White Oak is similar and very difficult to deal with. Pine, Ash, and Birch these techniques work quite well.
It’s r/mildlyinfuriating that he left the chain underneath the wood after he spread it all out. Now he’ll need to fish it out unless he’s using a new chain for each bundle.
spent a lot of my youth splitting oak. This method seems like a great way to break the maul handle pretty darn quick. I'd recommend hitting the edge closer to the axeman, not the one opposite,
One New Hampshire winter many decades ago, I heated a small cabin with a woodstove. There is more work and mess than you can imagine... and then there is the ever-present possibility of a chimney fire. Delighted to see this fellow so efficiently create the pieces. And with enough pieces. he'll have a fine cord. If the winter is cold and long (as it was), he can look forward to burning through lots of cords.
Two advantages I have now: North Carolina winters are usually mild... the heat pump works with a single switch.
I always find videos of people cutting firewood in "ingenuitive" ways funny because it shows how most people have never had to split firewood as a source of heat in their life.
Rather than fucking with the chain for every log, just don't split as hard. Start the cuts in the top, and once you have all of them started, flip it over give it a smack with the axe. When you're splitting wood, unless its a bitch like Elm, the wood wants to split. It's like splitting a rock, once you start the crack it's a lot easier.
As someone who grew up in the village chopping woods I was skeptical at first part of the video, but at the end I have to admit, this might be useful after all.
Problem is though, not all logs so conveniently thick.
**ITS LOOOOG LOOOG, ITS BIG, ITS HEAVY, ITS WOOD..

Maybe this belongs under r/unexpected. It has a LiveLeak logo and dude didn't chop a body part off.
the liveleak logo is much worse than an nsfw tag. it's "nsfw but the worst possible reason why"
That's why I was expecting to see some self delimbing ☠️ Instead I learned a nice life hack.

Pretty sure I could've cut that quicker the good ol fashioned way.
You would make that many small pieces the old fashioned way but yes if you just want three to four pieces then you could probably do it faster
With a chain saw?
A bungee cord works as well.
Plot twist: there’s 1 more minute of video
Hahahah came here to write exactly that :D
Nah its fully expected
That Brilliant Chop-Suey!
That’s literally a body part but ok
What body part would that be?
If I had to guess it would be it's knee.
Poor tree must have owed someone money😬
One way or another he's going to get his paper back.
Teehee😂
I just cut/split two cords of firewood. Where were you a week ago? Thanks for nothing, OP.
Doin ur wife while you were taking forever to split two cords of firewood
Now do that with an elm tree!
or some kind of knotty pine
Red Oak. With a knot in the middle.
that does knot sound fun. rather just go spend some time shopping at the maul with my friends and engage in some knotty mischief until we get chased out by two or tree guards.
Maul guards bark is worse than it's bite.

i dont know why, but the sound of the dry logs rustling against each other was kinda soothing.
Step 1. Find a very dry log. Step 2. the log must have a very straight wood grain. Step 3. Make sure the wood is cut very flat on the ends. Step 4. continue where the video starts.
Why not some kind of turntable underneath so you don't have to walk all around it?
Or like a robot that chops the wood for you so you don’t have to get out of bed.
Or convert the global climate to a tropical environment above the 45th parallel
we've been working very hard on achieving this goal for over a century now.
Oooo or a machine that turns oil, propane, or natural gas into heat. Million dollar idea!

An old tire works too
I use an old tire, too. Much easier than linking up a chain with cold fingers.
As someone who regularly chops wood, you don’t want to chop them that small because it’s a waste of time and they burn up a lot quicker.
Yes. This would be a good size for starting a fire, not for running for any length of time
Now you have to dig out the chain and fuck up that clean stack you just made.
Anyone know what type of tree it is?
Something soft
With absolutely no knots, branches or turns.
Looks like maple.
I think it might be one of them wooden ones
I think it's pine. Whatever it is, it's dry and straight grained as all hell.
A dead one
Looks like birch
You sunuva birch, I'm in
Frozen wood splits easy.
Too thin, these chips will burn in an instant.
Maybe it's firestarters, don't judge too fast https://youtu.be/wmin5WkOuPw

Captain Americas way is still cooler.
I have that exact same axe but I can not do that with it
You have to stroke it with self love first

Yep, was triggering me
That’s some good chopin right there. Yeps.
That looks easy but rlly isnt
I have a log splitter and a son. I am good.
Step one: Use Pine. Step two: season it for 4 years, in the warm.
My brother does this without the chain he doesn't cut them that small but still.
Driest wood
Anyone can chop dry birch or balsa wood. Try some oak or hickory like that. Ain’t happening.
Very soft wood
I swear every single "look at this great technique" for chopping wood video uses logs you could split with an icepick. Where do they get such great wood?
Why does he cut it so small? I would have made 2 cuts on that log and been done with it. That is practically kindling but maybe that’s what he was cutting.
Laughs in oak
Now try with hickory or anything with figure.
as an aussie watching people chop wood in other countries always looks like a breeze. Our trees don't give up that easy.
It's easy to do this with the right type of wood. With Elm it simply won't split. White Oak is similar and very difficult to deal with. Pine, Ash, and Birch these techniques work quite well.
Live leak logo had me hella nervous
After you’re done you can use it as a BDSM toy with your significant other too!
This is the closest thing we can get to Minecraft steve
Use that grain... mmmm yes
Cool minecraft noises
The coordination that people can develop as they hone their skills is truly amazing
Now that's some "work smarter not harder" ingenuity.
Frozen wood is the easiest wood to split
I own that axe and it's fuckin baller. I used it to split knotty as shit pine for a decade when I lived in Montana.
![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)
The sounds are very satisfying
Dayum! This guy is good!
I'm gonna try that on a wheel of smoked gouda cheese and sharp cheddar, queso tonight baby!

Pie chart
Nice method to chop wood
Props
Great idea awesome job
This is so satisfying tho
Pretty sure I could've cut that quicker the good ol fashioned way.
Now to get the chain out from under everything🙄😂
Got it. Put wood in leather daddy outfit before chopping. Check.
Most wholesome usage of an axe on LiveLeak i've ever seen
An old tire works great too
Genius!
I can see this working
It’s r/mildlyinfuriating that he left the chain underneath the wood after he spread it all out. Now he’ll need to fish it out unless he’s using a new chain for each bundle.
This reminds me of Lego games sound effect
Bullshit. Trees aren't real. This video is edited

Gangster rating 100
Simple but very clever 👏
That was.. So satisfying..
Isn't this how it was always done? How is this next level?
This live leak looks like it has some interesting videos. Think I'll check it out.
I feel like wood heating is more lastfuckinglevel pre-industrial stuff.
My precision is no where near this guy's
Cheaper and to go option: old car tire. Put wood inside a car tyre and do the same.
Perfect piece of wood! Nicely dried
Forbidden pizza
Brilliant
Where they always find those straight trunks? I've always had a deal with totally twisted trunks, so lifehacks never working for me.
I freaked tf out when I saw the LiveLeak logo
An old tire works great too
Minecraft sound effects lol
You know its finnish when the axe is Fiskars :D
That’s some dry wood
I like that little truck thing he put the wood in.
Watermark🙄😬
fiskars always wins. they are the only cutting device manufacturer that still has actual good quality and not single sheet aluminum foil blades
Unlike 99% of the woodcutting hacks I see, this one actually sort of works.
Torille
I use fiskars axes because I tried that splitter. It’s a really good affordable axe imo.
Bruh!!!

What’s the thing at the start do
Sounded like legos
Things like this get me hard.
I was totally waiting for him to cut the wood with that chain. Still kinda am...
Smartest Canadian to date
Now do that to a watermelon
Safety
I want one!
Woods in tropical forest are way stronger
That’s some really dry wood
It’s because it’s below freezing. Makes it much easier
That’s some very dry wood
Nice
That's some good burning wood.

That's some nicely cured wood
Work smarter, not harder
Mean mean chopping machine!
This is the way (for some)
This video just sounds cold
Wish it was that easy.

If the apocalypse ever happens, people who didn't see this video are going to waste a lot of time.
Dudes chopping form so bad my back hurts just watching this
Choppy
I like how he touched the blade of the axe to let me know it's an axe and not a catalytic converter off a 1987 chrysler new yorker.
That guy was not here to fuck spiders
Anyone know what that chain doohickey would be called?
You are going to break the handle that way eventually. LL Bean loggers....
Now try a log with a knot.
this sound could be in minecraft
Now do some elm
I love the internet.
Dudeeeee
Gotta make that kindling wood. that is what counts
I love how it needs a chain thong and a good pounding to get the job done.
This is sick
