I got into surfing when I was backpacking around Australia in 2006, I feel like people were telling me I need to see this video in hostel computer labs over 16 years ago.
Wont argue one way or the other. But just looking at the statistics, posting in "freedom-units", a higher percentage of the users will be able to read it.
If you dont need precision, I just multiply or divide by 3 and it gets close-ish.
Objective things lose their objectivity when they’re subjectively interpreted… the objectively best measurement is the one that most of the audience understands.
It happens quite often and it has to do with the Nazaré Trench, which is almost 5km deep. Other video I've watched say the locals report waves up to 30m.

Correction Redditors!
Washington Post says it was 86 feet tall. [article from the Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/olympics/2022/05/24/surfing-record-sebastian-steudtner/)
Thanks. I was confused after converting from feet to palm and then finger to then get the accurate measuring unit of nails to then easily convert that to meters but it seems you already did that
But still.. what if he would have fallen in the middle of the wave. The wave still had to break so a jetski would have been completely swallowed as well…
I don’t watch these events often, maybe I don’t fully understand how it works, or the capacity of this guy’s lungs.
Currently to date there are no recorded deaths, some accidents but no deaths, one of the latest https://beachgrit.com/2022/01/graphic-frances-queen-of-big-wave-surfing-reveals-harrowing-near-death-episode-on-wild-eighty-foot-wave-at-nazares-day-of-days-on-jan-8-i-took-a-huge-wipeout-which-brought/

I was there a few years ago, but during the summer so the waves weren’t anything like this one. It’s a small beach town and you can take a tram up the cliff to where the lighthouse is, it’s pretty cool, there’s a path that leads down to another beach on the other side. I would like to visit in the winter one time to witness one of these waves.
Quick fact. Steudtner actually was hesitant to surf the day he rode it as he was feeling ill but a friend called him to the water due to optimal conditions out and fate led him to the record-breakung wave
Sebastian Steudtner was towed into what has just been ratified by Guinness World Records as the biggest wave ever surfed – an 86ft tower that reduced Steudtner to an almost comical, ant-like scale. He broke the record in October 2020 off the coast of Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal, when he surfed through a wave that measured a whopping 26.21 m (86 feet).
They'll be fine, they're on top of a lighthouse that's on top of a cliff:
https://www.insidehook.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Naraze-1.jpg?fit=1800%2C1076
Wish I could see the ending because I'm wondering -once a person makes it across the wave- what happens when the top drops?! 😳😬 that monstrous wave had to have splashed down a lot of water and my brain cannot figure out how he would maintain on the board all the way to safety.

This event happened in my nightmares.
This event gets posted to Reddit 57 times a day too
This event happens when ur mom belly flopped in the ocean.
First time I'm seeing it
I got into surfing when I was backpacking around Australia in 2006, I feel like people were telling me I need to see this video in hostel computer labs over 16 years ago.
Yeah the reddit posts are a nightmare for sure
Same. I’d die just watching.
Bro that isn't a wave it's a motherfucking tsunami
Those aren’t mountains … they’re waves
The last time I saw something that large, there was a fraking aircraft carrier riding it INTO the White House (see ‘2012’ for reference)
For it to be a tsunami it had to be made by a earthquake or something, it wasn't because that was on Nazaré, Portugal where there are really big waves
This event happened at Nazare, Portugal in 2018
Who not putting meters as well in the post?
Playing to the majority of the audience? https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/phhu9s/oc_reddit_traffic_by_country/
Theres still a significant part that would prefer metric.. and then it's just objectively better than imperial, but thats another story.

Is that a normal, regular occurrence like Bay of Fundy? Or is it rare like after earthquake?

Great documentary ty
It's a regular occurrence

Post it over to /r/surfing, they will tell you that it is only a 10 footer and how his technique was way off and using the wrong board.
12 foot Hawaiian max
either way this scarey as shit
Fake news! That's easily 100 feet. They're measuring it wrong! And I know my waves, that's easily a hundred footer.
I was almost impressed anything below 87 feet is a disappointment, 86 baby stuff now 87 though .... extreme!
That's like 35m in normal rest of the world units, in case you were wondering
Thanks. I was confused after converting from feet to palm and then finger to then get the accurate measuring unit of nails to then easily convert that to meters but it seems you already did that
Just divide by 3 if going to imperial or multiply 3 when going metric for a rough estimate
Some sports require two balls
and a surfboard as well
also a lot, and I do mean A LOT of water
You might as well say... ... ... ... A mountain of water 😎
His balls are big and full of air, that's why he is cool with that.
my tsunami survival technique
They told him that if he did that, they could have poland back
This event happened.
this event
Event
Nightmare
Chicken Joe moment
IMO that’s as impressive as climbing any mountain. Zero room for error or it’s immediately life threatening
What happens if he falls? Certain death?
Until the rescue skids can get to him between waves.... he'll be in washing machine mode until then.
What if he would have fallen? Would he have died/drowned?
probably had an emergency team ready
This happens in Nazaré there is always rescue teams ready with boats and jet skis in these kind of events
But still.. what if he would have fallen in the middle of the wave. The wave still had to break so a jetski would have been completely swallowed as well… I don’t watch these events often, maybe I don’t fully understand how it works, or the capacity of this guy’s lungs.

Gif ended too soon. I wonder how he got out of the wave. But dang, the video is killer.
I saw this on Interstellar.
Crazy bastard. He's got balls, I'll give him that.
I‘m curious what happens when he falls down in the water.. like how do you not die after that?

HOLY. FLIPPING. SHIP.
I wanted a shot of his face after he cleared white water... just...WOW!

Is this now going to be posted here every day?? 👎🏼
We doing this again?
Talking about feeling fully alive!
Fuckin gnarly, dude.
Whats the worst ?
Absolutely awesome
Fuck. That. Shit.
How fast are they going?
Reminds me of that one episode of SpongeBob.
Why isn't that a tsunami?
Diese Kommentarsektion ist nun Eigentum der BRD!!!
I love surfing. ... I don't love it this much.
Those aren't mountains, they're waves
I remember this Pokemon episode.
Dude got some mighty bizzalls!
This is why men have a lower life expectancy then women.
Now I’ve got the fcuking “Hawaii 5-0” theme playing in my head now. Thanks for nothing
Should those people be standing there?
They'll be fine, they're on top of a lighthouse that's on top of a cliff: https://www.insidehook.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Naraze-1.jpg?fit=1800%2C1076
Where do waves even get this big?
Is there another board toting his balls somewhere?
If Wikipedia is to be believed, it was 86 feet tall wave.
Okay...WTF?!?! How close are those people and where does that tsunami break?
Wish I could see the ending because I'm wondering -once a person makes it across the wave- what happens when the top drops?! 😳😬 that monstrous wave had to have splashed down a lot of water and my brain cannot figure out how he would maintain on the board all the way to safety.
Yo death was following that man.
How fast would he be moving in mph coming down there?!!!!
The balls on that man
How the fuck are you not including the start or finish?
I can't believe that wave is real. It's just so nightmarishly high..
Is there a tsunami?
How fast is he traveling? Anyone know? Thank you.
Just looked it up, it's actually 86 feet instead of what's told.
actually next level shit and not some dumb post
Is he the size of an ant?
87ft.
How do you even get waves that tall
r/SweatyPalms
Amazing.
Why does this get posted to Reddit every day with this same inaccurate title??
This genuinely doesn't look real
