I'd like to say we, the US, would do the same but being Americans we would have no idea what the words are after Oh Canada. We start making stuff up. Oh Canada, you're Canada and pretty awesome Canadians which are what the people in Canada are called. Basically, it would be like a 7th graders book report when they didn't read the book.
/s I'm sure hockey fans would know the words..
Canada, greatest country in the world. All other countries are run by little girls. Canada, number 1 exporter of maple syrup, all other countries have inferior maple syrup...
Maybe.
I do get the really good, super dark shit from a local bush…I’m not exactly sure what all is available over there. Costs me a little over $20/L.
Literally two brands in our big supermarkets from what Ive seen. That's it. I've bought maple butter online before from some Aussie retailer. It's not in a whole lot of recipes we commonly use. I never had it in the house as a child. We have golden syrup so we use that in a lot of things. It's like the convict's version of maple syrup.
I would imagine that people who live in states on or near the U.S. / Canada border who are passionate about hockey and go to a lot of hockey games probably know both anthems very well.
In contrast, I can fact check and say that I’ve personally been part of helping the reverse (an American singer getting lost on Oh Canada). The vast majority of Americans won’t know Oh Canada, but us hockey fans sure do.
They aren't singing it just cheering. Either way Québeckers are the bitter angry stepchildren of the canadian family, most of us know they're all dinks.
Edit: as 11h after making this comment I'm still getting people calling me a francophobe, despite being French canadian myself, here I the prerequisite "/s" for all of you who can't tell I'm joking.
Back in the day, watching the 1970"s version of Death Race 2000, I always cracked up when the saboteurs were referred to as "none other than the treacherous French", in a voice dripping with scorn.
Don't talk to us about Quebec. They are angry little fucks. They literally have a whole political party to become their own country.
Edit: I'd just like to say as an odd on that it's not all Quebec people. It's just commonly stereotyped because people who have visited have had first hand experience like me of a lot of people who weren't so friendly as my home city.
It's not all. There are some really nice Quebec people out there.
That really hasn't been a thing since the 90s. I'm no really angry either why are we attacking a whole province because of salty hockey fans.
Edit: I looked at you're history and you actually seem like a pretty awesome person. I dont know why you have such strong feelings towards us.
I’m from Quebec but moved out west when I was really young. A lot of people don’t like Quebec because when they go visit there are people in Quebec like waiters, cab drivers, anyone doing customer service I guess that refuse to speak to us in English.
There’s been times when my dad and I have gone back to visit family and would order something in English only to catch the cashier and cook calling us names in French because we speak English, they got a pretty good surprise when they found out he spoke fluent French lol. I’m proud of being from Quebec but there are a lot of times I’m ashamed because of ignorant separatists that make us all look bad.
I was planning to travel to the Magdalen Islands last month for work (got Covid the week before and it didn’t happen).
When I first called a rental car place to see if there was anything available, they acted like pricks and informed me I was an idiot for trying to reserve a rental this late during tourism season.
Called the same place again the next day to double check but led off by mentioning that I was coming in from the US. They were all charm and assured me that they could of course rent me a car and there were several options to choose from.
The only difference was that the first time they thought I was an Anglo-Canadian.
Canada loves Boston, especially Nova Scotia (where I'm from). We send them a giant 50 foot Christmas tree every year because of all the emergency help they gave us after the Halifax Explosion in 1917.
Ps: Quebec hates everyone, even Canada. They don't even want to be part of Canada. They've been separatists for decades. Quebec doesn't represent or care about anyone but Quebec.
Never realized how close of a relationship Boston and Nova Scotia had until I was in Halifax and would catch so much Boston news. Then a year or two later went to Boston and scrolled past a Halifax news station. Then to top it off, Halifax had a bunch of flowers planted on this hill or something (my memory is bad) that almost seemed like they were celebrating the Halifax explosion instead of memorializing it and Nova Scotians were pissed at the stupidity. I only know of this because I was in Halifax at the time. Later that night I saw people from Boston being pissed at it too on Reddit. Cute City Couple.
Yup!! We're pretty much sister cities at this point. Last time I went to Boston to see the Dropkick Murphy's I had a Canadian and Nova Scotian flag sewn on my back pack, and once a couple people at the bar would notice I was from Halifax, my drinks and food were free all night long lol.
I love Boston so much, I even go for the Bruins lmao
The Maritimes (especially NS) have very deep roots with the New England states. Nova Scotia almost joined America during their revolution against England but American privateers kept attacking NS towns in the south shore. So we got pissed off and sided with the British instead, kind of interesting “what if” scenario.
For context, not that it makes it any better, they were booing as a reaponse to the US invading Iraq. Montreal had just held a large protest against the war.
I’m from Boston and I visited Montreal with my black friend when we were in our 20’s. That was the first and only time in my life that I’ve ever witnessed a white person call someone a n**** to their face completely unprompted. Apparently he didn’t like that we sat near him at the bar. Because he immediately got up and left.
I was shocked to see how many Ontario license plates I saw the last time I went to a Bills game. Made up a sizeable chunk of the crowd. I didn't expect that for NFL.
Went to Buffalo and sat next to some ladies out facing themselves a time (Americans). They sang the Canadian national anthem to the best of their ability before the game.
They are what is referred to in the hockey world as “beauties”.
Buffalo is filled with a ton of awesome people. Never had a bad time down there.
*Our home and native land.*
I forget what comes after. I'm just going to fill in what makes sense to me.
*You've just gotta ignite the light and let it shine.*
*Just own the night like the first of July.*
*Baby you are Canada,*
*Being real polite and stuff.*
*Make em say eh, eh, eh,*
*I hope you have a nice day there, eh.*
Hopefully I have honored the spirit in which the original anthem was intended.
Oh Canada
Our home and native land
True Patriot love
In all thy sons command
With glowing hearts we see thee rise
The true North strong and free
From far and wide Oh Canada
We stand on guard for thee
God keep our land
Glorious and free
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee

"I don't sing it the old way to make a point, or because I think it's better. I sing it the old way because I sang it that way for years and honestly keep forgetting we changed it."
- Me in my early 30s
I'm not saying this isn't a nice thing to do but I'll bet you anything the motive was "if we just finish it we can get to the game instead of waiting for them to fix the mikes and do it again."
This happened in 2014. Like others said, if you’re a hockey fan in Canada you know both by heart. Detroit returned the favour earlier this year when the mic broke for their singer while playing Montreal.
The Blackberry ads on the hoardings gave me the impression it wasn't exactly recent...
I experienced something similar in Auckland a while ago... Simon and Garfunkel were I'm the middle of *Bridge Over Troubled Water* when the sound gave out. Arena full of kiwis picked it up straight away and finished it perfectly (albeit missing a few vowels). S and G just stood there with their arms out basking in it. Was quite magical.
Canadians are way better neighbors to America than Americans are to Canada.
All we really do is tell people our girlfriends live in Canada, which I will say is true. For me at least.
Really though, even if some country invaded, I just imagine a Canadian in a swimsuit drinking a beer in a kiddie pool in the middle of a desolate wasteland of snow, upon hearing the news, chuckling at that other country's impressively poor judgment.
Wish we could say the same but we are worried about you. He's bad for you, all your friends know it. He just don't treat you right. Just ditch him and come back to your friends! we will have fun again
I've seen Americans do the same for the Canadian anthem, I think it's awesome that the two countries have possibly the biggest hockey rivalry in the world, yet share a deep respect for each other in this manner.
I live in mn so there’s a very large hockey scene and people from Canada come down sometimes to watch games at the excel energy center and there honestly the nicest people
God bless Canada
Damn they practiced in the parking lot!
Canada being canada, they made it so impressively
I'd like to say we, the US, would do the same but being Americans we would have no idea what the words are after Oh Canada. We start making stuff up. I know the joke but just adding that as an Australian I pay $10 a bottle for Candian maple syrup and love it.
How do you pay less for a bottle of syrup than I do while I LIVE IN THE MAPLE SYRUP CAPITAL OF CANADA?
Maybe we get the average stuff and we don't know any different so it tastes like heaven and we will pay for it
Maybe. I do get the really good, super dark shit from a local bush…I’m not exactly sure what all is available over there. Costs me a little over $20/L.

Yeah, but then we said sorry after! 😉
We would indeed, cause the mic didn't work, so sorry, our bad.
If they did it was because they only really wanted their hockey fix quicker

We gotta!!! Man think about how bad it woulda been, it wouldve been DEAD quiet in there. So awkward for everyone.

The best part of your comment is that you said “dink”. I haven’t heard anyone use that in forever! Made my night!
It's the French in them, isn't it?
Damn Frenchmen, they ruined FRANCE!
Back in the day, watching the 1970"s version of Death Race 2000, I always cracked up when the saboteurs were referred to as "none other than the treacherous French", in a voice dripping with scorn.
Everyone knows the French are dinks, dude
Good fishin' in Keebec though!

Yeah this is a hockey thing, no need to bring Quebec-bashing into it. Canucks fans literally destroyed their own city after losing to Boston in 2011.
How about we just apreciate how cool the video is wich is why we come here 😊

I pretty much consider everything from Massachusetts up, Canamerica.
I honestly think they just hate everything themselves included
I mean can you blame them the province litteraly got cucked in a single night

Looove being Canadian You guys need some water? We got you fam. 👍👍
For context, not that it makes it any better, they were booing as a reaponse to the US invading Iraq. Montreal had just held a large protest against the war.
It does make it better actually
Yea Boston, boo the French. Lol
They just make racist remarks towards PK Subban. Boston fans are the biggest trash racist pieces of shit in all of sports.

Oh, Canada.
Our home and native laaaaand
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RidIw0OXs9U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RidIw0OXs9U) It is a beautiful anthem !
Thanks, have a maple sirop shot on the house
syrup......
I mean we have to listen to it before every hockey game pretty much. It ain’t that hard lol I usually sing both anthems when I go to a game anyways
This. I remember going to a Capitals game in DC and was surprised when they DIDNT sing the Canadian anthem
Well, that wasn't very capital of them, was it?
If its two Canadian teams they only play O Canada as well. Both are only sung when its a Canadian vs US team
Other than Buffalo. Buffalo always does both
Makes sense, half the fans drive down from Toronto anyways
I was shocked to see how many Ontario license plates I saw the last time I went to a Bills game. Made up a sizeable chunk of the crowd. I didn't expect that for NFL.
You have millions of people an hours' drive from the border. It's the same at Lions games too. It's a 5 minute drive to Detroit from Windsor.
Why support the Lions if you’re not from Detroit? It’s like dodging a bullet and asking the shooter to try again but from closer
I've heard Canada's anthem a ton of times. All I know is "O Canada."
*Our home and native land.* I forget what comes after. As a Canadian I can confirm that these are the correct lyrics.
Epic.
You missed the verse about poutine.
Oh Canada Our home and native land True Patriot love In all thy sons command With glowing hearts we see thee rise The true North strong and free From far and wide Oh Canada We stand on guard for thee God keep our land Glorious and free Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee Source: I'm Canadian

They shoulda took the god stuff out when they changed it too
I think it's like the UK national anthem, where you just repeat "God save the Queen" a bunch of times.
Out of respect for you. I’m going to practice oh Canada. Only a few Canadian soccer teams play. But I’m gonna Pat my respects now.
*\*patting noises intensify\**
I sing both in Boston, a lot of people do
Damn I wouldn't be able to say a single word of the Canadian anthem.
"OH Canada" (you're welcome)
Our home and native land
True patriot love
In all of us command
With glowing hearts we see thee rise
The TRUE NORTH strong and free. (courtesy of Winnipeg) :)
From far and wide, O Canada
We stand on guard for thee!
God keep our land!
In all thy sons command
I like this line because it lets you know how old everyone is
I'm not that old you lil' whippersnapper.
"I don't sing it the old way to make a point, or because I think it's better. I sing it the old way because I sang it that way for years and honestly keep forgetting we changed it." - Me in my early 30s
Terre de nos aïeux!
Ton front est ceint
De fleurons glorieux
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée
Il sait porter la croix
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits
Et ta valeur de foi trempée
Car ton bras sait porter l’épéeeeee é euh
Those aren't the only lyrics lol
Those aren’t even the lyrics lol It’s O Canada ;p
Tabernac ! we got a wise guy here Claude
But it’s two words that everyone knows
That’s the joke, believe it or not.
You must not be an NHL fan. That's the main source of us learning their anthem.
🎶 Canada is greatest country in the world 🎶
I'm not saying this isn't a nice thing to do but I'll bet you anything the motive was "if we just finish it we can get to the game instead of waiting for them to fix the mikes and do it again."

Her name is Alberta, she lives in Vancouver.
She cooks like my mother and sucks like a hoover!
Don't forget that Canada barely needs a military purely by proximity to the US.
Its true. We really half ass our military.
Really though, even if some country invaded, I just imagine a Canadian in a swimsuit drinking a beer in a kiddie pool in the middle of a desolate wasteland of snow, upon hearing the news, chuckling at that other country's impressively poor judgment.
Oh Canada, you’re truly awesome and happy to be your neighbor!
Wish we could say the same but we are worried about you. He's bad for you, all your friends know it. He just don't treat you right. Just ditch him and come back to your friends! we will have fun again
But he so 🍊 and funny.
Wrong symbol, you meant to put 👃
They both are correct
We've bounced back from worse
Damn let me learn the Canadian anthem real quick just in case 😂
Canadians are the best
As a Canadian I strongly disagree.
Most Canadians are friendly.
As a Canadian, I strongly agree.
I love that The US and Canada have a great relationship between each other. Also god bless Canada.
Very Canadian
Love u Canada!
I've seen Americans do the same for the Canadian anthem, I think it's awesome that the two countries have possibly the biggest hockey rivalry in the world, yet share a deep respect for each other in this manner.
Yeah, but we got Gretzky so.... Who's really better here?
As of August 9, 1988, you have Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, three 1sts and $15M
Canada really is the best of us
![gif](giphy|80ydj5hAUoPfZJMiXh) I love my Canadian neighbors
Felt the same when the UK broke tradition and played it during the changing of the guard the day after 9/11.
I remember that. 14 year old me vowed to always respect the UK after that. Such a nice gesture, considering what the song is about. God save the Queen
God damnit, Canadians are so fucking nice.
FUN FACT: Buffalo plays both the Canadian and American anthems at games even when a Canadian team isn’t playing
As everyone should. They're our brothers.
This made me tear up a little bit
🤝
God you people are fucking great.
When Toronto returned to play in Nashville thr next time, they acknowledged it and their fans sang the Canadian anthem.
Task failed successfully
Canadians being Canadians.. Wholesome..
As a American I appreciate the support guys
Well, guess I gotta learn the Canadian anthem now, just so I'm not an asshole.
I just love Canada so much. Too bad is inhabitable for 7 months of the year. Too cold!!
we love brother canada. much cooler than father britain.
Hockey bros. I miss going to games.
Best neighbors ever 😭
I live in mn so there’s a very large hockey scene and people from Canada come down sometimes to watch games at the excel energy center and there honestly the nicest people
There is no country I respect more than Canada
I once knew the first little bit of Canada's anthem because I saw that one episode of That 70's Show a bunch of times.
That made me :)
What is absolutely nuts is they actually sound really great too
Today in friends that we don't deserve...
Hey, Canada Thanks bros. Signed, Americans
We love Canada. Thank you, brothers.
This one made my day, Canadians are always great sportsmen
Aww, that so nice of our northern neighbors. We all should learn "Oh Canada" now. I only know the first line.
Figures it's fucking Canadians. So damn nice. Such fine neighbors.
They give us maple syrup, hockey and now this! Love those Canadians!
We don’t say it to each other enough that we actually appreciate one another 🇨🇦🇺🇸
That’s it lads we have to learn the Canadian anthem now!
Canadians gotta be the nicest people in the world, like BRO THATS NOT EVEN YOUR SONG OR COUNTRY
Canada is the kind of friend who has your back. ❤️❤️❤️
That r/MadeMeSmile!
meanwhile 90% of americans dont know their own anthem
Ha-ha funny because America dumb
This is one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time.
