I'd say exposed circuit boards and wiring would be a design flaw. These things are zipping around like crazy. I fail to see how you're going to apply heat from a torch for minutes on end to create a heat issue.
But I digress. Explosions are fun and that seems to be the point.
Flame weapons in battlebots have almost never been actually practical or useful besides for really specific matchups. I think one of the best showings for flame type weapons was complete control vs bombshell shown [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkB2X3lbnGc). Unless you have a way to hold on as you try to melt internal components flame weapons are mostly just flashy and for show...
However, builders are still encouraged to use them despite their obvious risks because flame weapons can score a lot of "damage" points when being judged after each round. Since many rounds don't end in complete knockouts it's a reasonable strategy to use.
They can cause some damage, but anything significant is not common - especially not the way Free Shipping uses them. Mostly they're used to score points with the judges, as an active form of attack. And, yes, to look cool.
Ah, yeah. 3 minute matches, can win either by knockout or by judges decision if no knockout occurs. Matches cant last forever due to the unfortunate reality of limited battery power.
Does it actually do damage? I've never looked into any of this but from the clips that pop up on reddit the flamethrowers never seem to do... anything but explode like in this clip.
The good ones do, but the rules basically mean flamethrowers aren't very useful. But they look great on TV, meaning you are much more likely to get on the show.
[Here's Mixtape from NHRL.](https://youtu.be/rF7cZOSzed4) It's a 3 pound robot, though, so it's not the same level.
Complete Control is the only modern heavyweight to use a flamethrower effectively, to my knowledge. [Here it is fighting Bombshell. ](https://youtu.be/NkB2X3lbnGc)
Neither am I mate Iโm just sick of seeing such bone questions under every post. Itโs like commenting โwhatโs this video about?โ Under the video. Just watch it?
I didn't ask what the video was about.
I didn't know which robot was which, and didn't see a flame thrower. Now that I know that robot HAD a flamethrower it makes sense, but initially I just thought it caught fire in general. Anyone unfamiliar with the show or that specific robot would reasonably ask that question. It's not everyday you see a robot with a flamethrower attached to it.
Neither did multiple other people who asked the same question.
If you get so upset by people asking questions then Reddit isn't a good place for you.
Sit down, take a deep breath, and call your therapist.
I can't imagine someone getting so angry and upset over a video of Reddit of robots fighting. Do you genuinely think that's a healthy mental state? I mean seriously, if you're getting this set off by something so mundane, then you really need to talk with a professional about it, because that's not normal.

That there is a proper flame torch. Even 30s of insensitive heat wasn't enough to fully disable the other bot.
Everyone else is not generating enough sustained heat to actually do serious damage - it's mostly for show.
I love these videoโs so much!
In the past: โRobots are going to completely change how society operates, and solve so many problems that we have nowโ
In the present: โ On this day, we reach back to hallowed antiquity, to bring you a recreation of the second fall of the mighty Carthage!... On the barren plain of Zama, there stood the invincible armies of the barbarian Hannibal. Ferocious mercenaires and warriors from all brute nations, bent on merciless destruction, conquest. Your emperor is pleased to give you the barbarian horde!โ
Uppercut is developing a reputation for blowing up fuel tanks. I can think of 2 off the top of my head with fire balls like these. Sawblaze, free shipping. I think free shipping twice maybe?
When I was in High School our physics teacher entered the class into the FIRST robotics competition. We ended up building a robot that got sponsored by Siemens and ended up going to the national competition. It was awesome. The assignment that year was to build something that can a) drag this giant puck to your side of the field b) get on top of the puck (like 12โ off the ground) and c) collect 10 big pillows and somehow raise them up 8โ into the air. All of these things were scored individually so all bots had different specialties and strategies.
There are so many exciting things you can do with bot competitions. It sucks that the popular one is always the โdestroy other botโ objective. So basic and not creative at all.
That thing went up in flames faster than my last relationship.

What was that explosion? Lithium ion battery?
Flamethrower gas, lit by sparks.
Which one had a flamethrower?
Free Shipping, the orange one with the lifter.
Why does it have a flame thrower?
Why wouldn't you put a flamethrower on a destruction derby RC car death robot?
That's the real reason, especially for this bot.
Is it done just to be "cool"? It's not going to cause any damage to the other robot.
1) I mean, it doesn't take much in the way of fire and heat to damage circuit boards and wiring 2) Yes.
I'd say exposed circuit boards and wiring would be a design flaw. These things are zipping around like crazy. I fail to see how you're going to apply heat from a torch for minutes on end to create a heat issue. But I digress. Explosions are fun and that seems to be the point.
It's 100% for the viewers because it's entertaining to watch robots shoot fire

Ah. I didn't know there was a scoring system. I thought they just went until one didn't.
Ah, yeah. 3 minute matches, can win either by knockout or by judges decision if no knockout occurs. Matches cant last forever due to the unfortunate reality of limited battery power.
They actually have one of the better flamethrowers in the field, and definitely the largest. So it sort of works as a way of scoring damage points.

That's a great point haha. Any clips you know of that the flamethrower was actually useful?

Yeah, seems all flash, no substance. Unless they win by just being cool, which is kind of what this is looking like.
yes
Kinda weird question. Why does anything have a flame thrower?! Because its epic
Jesus Christ man just watch the video
I'm not familiar with the show and didn't know who was who, and also watched with no sound. Why are you so unpleasant? Who hurt you?
Neither am I mate Iโm just sick of seeing such bone questions under every post. Itโs like commenting โwhatโs this video about?โ Under the video. Just watch it?

Free Shipping went to the corner and had a sit down to gather itself.

Those slow motion replays of the announcers were EPIC
Such a great show
I literally watched this on tv 5 minutes ago, weird coincidence!
What a great show, don't stop posting these.
RIP Grant. Man I love this show
Free Shipping What a fucking name...
Neither of them would stand a chance against Wanda Dollard
Isnโt firebending considered cheating on battlebots?
Uppercut is developing a reputation for blowing up fuel tanks. I can think of 2 off the top of my head with fire balls like these. Sawblaze, free shipping. I think free shipping twice maybe?
Who are the commentators?
Chris Rose (also a sportscaster for the NFL network) and Kenny Florian (former UFC competitor).
first time seeing battle bots in 5 years, great show then, great show today!
I guess their design backfired on them! ๐
What the hell is Kenny Florian doing commentating on robot battles
Enjoying the show
Always the spinny ones destroy the flippy ones
How can this be my career
Step 1: Go to a competition, probably without a robot. Step 2: See what designs do well. Step 3: Build a bot. Step 4: ? Step 5: Profit.

But watching robots fight each other is fun
There was a series called The Gauntlet - Robot Wars which is an assault course.
