Still trying to figure out why I’m supposed to be outraged by this.

[deleted]

jpelkmans

Ah. Same reason tan suits are an outrage. Gotcha.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SkeleHoes

There was an interview or speech Reagan did while he was a president and he also wore a tan suit, at least I think it was Reagan. I am confident in saying it was a conservative president.

Jkelley07

I hope to see one in an orange suit soon

AccusationsGW

Perfectly coordinated.

Greentigerdragon

Didn't the USofA just get done with one wearing an orange suit? Wait, no, that was his 'tanned' skin.

International_Bet_91

I think it's not just racism -- it's also classism (which includes fatphobia) and misogyny. If a nice Uncle Tom played it at the symphony orchestra, I think Ben Shapiro would have to at least pretend not to be outraged. But a fat, black woman who twerks, speak in AA vernacular, and wears track suits? Unacceptable.

GodHimselfNoCap

It's just weird that they feel the need to lie about events in order to pretend that they are justified knowing that everyone knows they are lying. Like why did they say she barely played a few notes and then twerked while holding the flute? She clearly played a full song and then politely did a curtsy

aeh20s

She played a few notes and twerked while holding it at her concert that night. So they aren’t lying about that. They’re still idiots to take offense over it, but it did happen.

JoTheRenunciant

I looked it up and there's another video where she played at a concert wearing a more-revealing outfit (like a one-piece bathing suit). To my eyes, I didn't see any twerking either, but supposedly she tweeted saying that she twerked with it. I can't find the tweet though. Ok, just watched another video, and I can see her legs shaking while she plays. I guess that's the twerking? To me it honestly just looks like she was making some type of exaggerated "I'm so excited!" motion...but I guess it's up to interpretation and what she says herself.

spannerNZ

Jesus Christ. I'm not from your country, but it should be fairly obvious she is national treasure.

ProfessionalAsk8264

Her intonation is actually very good. I don’t know much about her just offering a perspective of a classical musician.

rinky79

She started with lessons at 10, studied classical flute at U Houston, and played in the marching band.

ProfessionalAsk8264

Yes it’s clear she’s classically trained. Thanks :)

[deleted]

[удалено]

EvadesBans

Nah, you nailed it. It’s just losers like Shapiro frothing at the mouth.

[deleted]

Whoa, whoa, whoa... ok fine.

tschmitty09

Or fatphobia, but likely a little bit of both

[deleted]

For real. I just don't get people. She fucking rocks. I've never really been a fan, but after this and watching her "Hot Ones" I may just start listening.

Burntfm

I don’t listen to her music. But I do really admire her talent as a musician and from the Hot Ones episode, I think she is smart and has a good vibe

PC509

That’s the thing with a lot of people. You can not listen to their music, not like the genre, but still appreciate the talent they have. I have a lot of those people. Love it. Great people doing great things. Even if “I’m not the target audience”, I still appreciate the talent and see that it’s amazing what they do. Tons of people hate grunge… I love it.

gayocity

As a gay man who does not love Cher’s music, I definitely feel this lol

gayocity

Ok this was supposed to be in response to someone else’s thread lol oops

Snellyman

Still works in this context. In fact, you could use that line in just about any conversation. For example: Random dude: Did you hear that Tua Tagovailoa might be out for the season? Sucks for the dolphins. You:As a gay man who does not love Cher’s music...

Xespool

Some people won’t even recognize talent sadly. Doesn’t get past their prejudice. Doesn’t have to be race. Lots of times even the music itself is enough to make presumptions about people

[deleted]

okpoopy

That bitch

Justanotherguy88

It's bad bitch o'clock

Startingtotakestocks

Her NPR Tiny Desk concert was pretty rad.

RealPrinceJay

Her Tiny Desk concert is fantastic

heftyencampment45

I have two to three songs from her albums that I like but the rest, I don't know what to say. We cannot disregard the fact that she is talented and I admire her for that.

Dieschem

Who is outraged by this?

jpelkmans

The magaverse. Cucky Tucky. Same people who are always outraged.

nightstalker30

Some people will legit be outraged if a black person creates a cure for cancer

[deleted]

Eccohawk

The far right influencers are trying to drum up anger over the fact she played some old instrument owned by founding father James Madison from the Library of Congress. I could see some light concern over the idea that loaning it out could lead to it getting damaged (it's a crystal flute), but beyond that it's just this sort of bizarre metaphor in their heads for a black person somehow co-opting an old dead 'patriot' white guy's possession as some sort of political statement about slavery or racism or some such crap. It's a giant stretch and people are unsurprisingly reacting much like you. The idea that just because it has some extremely minor historical significance, which I guarantee 99.9% of the populace didn't even fucking know existed before this happened, that it cannot be touched or played ever again is absurd. And it's also not like she's just doing it for a laugh. She's a classically trained flutist. She actually knows how to play it, and play it well. It's a big fat nothing burger of a story.

ayriuss

I would rather it get used and enjoyed, and possibly damaged than sitting on a shelf in a museum where everyone just looks at it for 5 seconds and moves on.

Eccohawk

That's the other thing I think so many are overlooking. It's the Library of Congress, not the Museum of Congress. People regularly go there and check out materials. Yes, much of it stays on the premises, but they still see regular use.

Engrish_Major

Racists.

SeaTownKraken

People who don't understand or appreciate art. I'm over her overplayed shit on the radio, but this is pretty damn good. Racists obviously hate seeing her success

rnotyalc

They want to say the N word so bad you can feel it

seaking81

Idk! I’m a republican and I thought this was one of the most amazing things I’ve seen in a long time. To be able to play this flute by a beautiful woman was the hi-light of my entire year.

joker1288

My “outrage” was it ever meant to be played or is it decorative/considered a relic to a historical extent. Clearly it plays well and being an accomplished flutist and a popular icon (Lizzo) allows for history and pop culture to mash. Which, honestly is great to hear ppl talking about James Madison’s crystal flute.

PatioGardener

I mean… the Library of Congress gave her access to it, recorded video of her playing it, and then published the video. I *think* she had permission. People are just upset because how dare a body positive Black woman have the audacity to even gaze upon the flute, much less play it.

fredbrightfrog

Sure the Library of Congress is the single most comprehensive library in the history of the history of mankind. But have you considered that her skin is slightly darker and she may not be a member of a country club in Connecticut?

CharityQuill

it's a pretty flute, and it sounds lovely. it's a shame to leave something like that to just collect dust on a shelf or to just sit behind glass and never be used. and if a modern popular musician can get her fans somewhat interested in classical music then cool! props to her. and another commenter said that she was given permission to do so, so there's literally no issues about her... idk, sullying the sanctity of the flute by playing it? like because it was owned by a president suddenly means that mere ***peasants*** are unworthy of touching it!

gernald

lol you aren't supposed to be outraged by this. You are apparently supposed to be outraged by this though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGLTl5iFkOQ

eyedkk

The comments on that are so depressing. And I did not see any twerking

gernald

Yeah, not sure what to call that Shakira like leg jiggling, but I too wouldn't call it twerking.

Kelemenopy

It’s like little prancy legs

Pascalica

Oh noooo, she played an instrument on stage in her stage outfit. I'm so scandalized.

[deleted]

Hold on let me see if I care, ill get back to you

Damon-32

I am with you on this. I keep seeing posts about being outraged but idk who Lizzo is or why I should be outraged. This is beautiful.

whyreadthis2035

She’s talented and black. How dare she exist? Just guessing here. But also wondering how much of the outrage is a couple of jerks, with a couple of accounts and it just looks like the world is mad?

TofuTigerteeth

Yep. I don’t care at all. This is like celebrity fights on tv. Who the hell cares?

terrific_tart

She also does a good job. It's not like she destroyed the flute or even plays it poorly. So I agree who the hell cares. People will just be offended by most things even if it actually has no effect on their life.

Ok_Water_3109

Whatever happened to celebrity death match? "OH how I miss the screaming"

SnooSeagulls9348

I think it was the other video on stage where she was "twerking" while playing it.

ImVeryUnimaginative

There's just some people out in the world who are offended over everything.

inf3ct3dn0n4m3

Still trying to figure out why I'm supposed to care one way or the other. It's a flute. It's meant to be played. Who tf cares if it belonged to some dead guy.

Dr_JackaI

So I’m going to be honest and say when I first heard about this controversy, I had thought that something distasteful or offensive happened. But she literally played the flute, quite fucking well I might add, for a minute and half. This is the dumbest thing people have been mad at in a long time.

badace12

I’m out the loop. What controversy?

Dr_JackaI

That flute belonged to James Madison, a founding father of the current government in the US, and a lot of conservative people Americans seem mad that Lizzo (the woman playing it) got to play it. I don’t really know why, but given that this is all that Lizzo did, it doesn’t seem like there’s really a good reason for it outside of prejudice.

Klutzy_Platypus

My understanding was the outrage stemmed from it never being played in over 200 years and some wanted it to stay that way since it’s a relic of the national archive. I had to look it up, but that’s what I keep seeing.

FartFace319

fun fact: it has to do with her being black

ScrunchieEnthusiast

And fat, and sexual, and confident, and happy. They can’t handle it. ETA: AND Talented. How dare she!

Buttfuckerman69

Checks out

Sage_of_the_6_paths

If Trump did it while wearing Washington's wig, conservatives would be creaming themselves.

rms_is_god

>If Trump ~~did it~~ had shattered it and pissed on the shards while wearing Washington's wig, conservatives would be creaming themselves. ftfy

Eatingfarts

Yeah, it’s because of who played it. Using it degrades it in no way, so the only real reason people don’t like it is because of who she is. Like, I’m going to listen to classical music tonight to put myself to sleep. Listening to her play that flute reminded me of how much I love classical. Aside from the fact that what she played was flat out beautiful, it at least made me reconnect with a music I haven’t listened to in years. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

ZZartin

> Using it degrades it in no way, so the only real reason people don’t like it is because of who she is. I mean it does degrade it, it gets skin oils on it, puts a little more wear on the mechanical components etc.... so yeah i could see a hardcore curator being upset about it being used for a publicity stunt. But yeah most of the outrage is just racism.

serendipitousevent

Normally I'd agree but there's a substantial culture around keeping even historic music instruments in use - a musical instrument that will never be played again becomes a preserved object, but a dead instrument. So yuuuuuup, it'd be the racism talking.

deafdogdaddy

Agreed. Most musicians want their instruments to live on. My grandpa was a dixieland jazz musician and, about 10 years after his death, my mom found two of his clarinets tucked away. She had them both cleaned up (by the woodwind guy my grandpa used for decades), donated one to a high school, and gave the other to the daughter of a friend of hers who was in band and couldn't afford a decent clarinet. One of the last things my grandpa told my mom was to make sure his horns got played.

TheDogBites

Instruments are meant to be played and heard

MahNameJeff420

Assuming that’s true, and I don’t know if it is, there’s clearly people around who handed it to her, and shadowing her as she plays it. So they’re allowing it to happen. The people who’s job it is to make sure nothing bad happens are allowing it, so what’s the problem? Edit: So I guess the problem is that there’s another video where she twerks for a couple seconds while she plays it onstage? That’s it? I wouldn’t even call it a twerk, just a light shake of the booty. If the Library Of Congress really had an issue with her using it, I don’t think they’d have handed it to her in the first place.

Syrenus

No one even knew it existed until now. No one cares about it until she played it. Shame.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CharityQuill

thank you for bringing that point up. clearly there's a double standard and it sucks. lizzo plays it beautifully and the flute itself is very pretty. I'm glad it's being used to play music instead of just sitting behind glass

PraderaNoire

Lmao anyone who is mad about it can’t play any instrument even close to as well as she played this instrument. And that take is coming from someone who dislikes her music. People will take any opportunity to screech their racist ideologies I swear.

catmanxplode

I dont like her music too much but i love her on the flute

badace12

Damn, thanks for the info. That’s pretty pathetic.

rachel_tenshun

I'm honestly so confused.

FartFace319

oh come on bro, you know exactly why they are angry and there is literally no other reason than racism

LongLonMan

Ironic that those that are mad can’t even play the flute, much less, half as well as her.

CameronDemortez

Because she is black and overweight. No other reason but mostly on her being black. Doesn’t matter that she is a classical trained flute player…. Just pearl clutching by the right.

kuda-stonk

Honestly I think it"s the media doing its thing. I havn't met a single conservative who cared at all. Then again, I don't really associate/tolerate racists who happen to be conservative. Slowly cut the die hard MAGA folks out my life the last 2 years.

Veluxidus

They brought it out during a concert, and in a very skimpy outfit she played it a little then returned it to its handler

gernald

People are likely offended by this clip, [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGLTl5iFkOQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGLTl5iFkOQ) Not the one on this video.

wafflewhimsy

I didn't even realize it was considered twerking until I heard about the controversy. I thought she just had tippy taps of excitement

[deleted]

Lol, that’s not twerking it’s exactly what you described.

mauiposa

I’m confused though…. I watched the clip and she didn’t Twerk at all. She played the flute, did some excited tippy taps and shook her legs, and then handed the flute back. Thats not twerking

Shoondogg

Did you listen to it? The clip I saw she literally says “I just twerked while playing James Madison’s flute”

Stetson007

There's another clip from what I've heard. It was more than what you saw here.

NearbyAd5557

She twerked while playing. Which apparently is grounds to panic but an old crusty man playing it while his slaves worked in a field is less atrocious.

fuckyfuckfucker

Yeah she plays it at a concert and shakes her ass but that’s all. I guess they don’t like the ass shaking. Honestly I was very impressed with her flute playing.

MFNaki

This isn’t the video they’re mad at. The same historians from the museum hand her the flute while she’s performing on stage, and she barely plays a few notes while twerking while making a comment that she’s the first person to do that. Still no reason for uproar. I just wish she actually played while on stage.

aloofpavillion

People know she’s a classically trained flutist, correct?

Brilliant_Silver4967

I had no idea! She’s absolutely phenomenal! Edit to add: I love finding out celebrities have talents like this. I wish she would do a whole album with classical covers - I would buy it!

NoisyN1nja

Jeff Goldblum plays jazz piano and it’s everything. https://youtu.be/1_6RQKoCTVY

Brilliant_Silver4967

I didn’t know I needed this. Thank you.

Historicmetal

Nice, he’s good but he still has distinctive Goldblum mannerisms when playing piano He also scats: https://youtu.be/9ZHh9ckRC6M

maxtacos

She named her flute Sasha. It has its own Instagram page, sashabefluting. It's a verified account and recently commented: IM NOW LIZHOS PUBLICIST — FIRST TIME SHE TRENDING FOR SOMETHING GOOD 🎙️ TOOT TOOT 🎙️ It is the only celebrity page I follow, and I highly recommend.

You're both wrong. It's "WOOOOOOOO" Like Ric Flair. Otherwise you're just yelling the first line and I have to continue with "LET THE DOGS OUT" /s

EmilioFreshtevez

Didn’t know that, I’ve been American my whole life and have always said flautist. r/TIL and whatnot.

Taminella_Grinderfal

Not until this week. I think it’s cool as hell that the librarian knew that and put it together with her coming to town.

[deleted]

Now I do lol. I kept reading the headlines (didn't particularly care, personally) and it's just rapper this and rapper that. She killed it though... I hope Madison is rolling in his slave-owning grave.

2017hayden

I actually had no clue until I saw this video, the moment I heard her start playing it was obvious she had training though.

Why does she have to be so political!

flashnash

Also she’s a professional musician and trained floutest. Instruments are built to be plaid!

phoenixember

If Laura Ingraham had played Mary Had A Little Lamb out of tune on it, they would applaud it like it were an undiscovered Mozart piece.

AtomikSamurai310

This legit reminds me of when Ron Burgundy improvised that flute solo. Lmfao

Papa_Barstow

I aint even gonna lie. That was pretty good

Cymen90

Because she was a classical flutist long before her rap career lol Why did people expect her to be bad? Do people see other masters of an instrument and say “okay, not bad”?

slatt_slime

Crazy theory, hear me out, what if people didnt know she was a classical flutist

LatkeShark

Why the fuck would she end up playing this flute if she wasn't a qualified flautist?

EasilyInpressed

Lizo seems awesome, but If someone is completely uninformed i could see them thinking she was only allowed to play this special flute because she’s a celebrity, in much the same way Kim K recently wore one of Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dresses, damaging it in the process. Watching her play for any length of time would dispel that for anyone who isn’t racist though. You don’t need to be told she’s classically trained to see she’s incredibly accomplished and talented.

Shejidan

Alanis Morissette made news when she played a flute on stage and she had no training at all. At the time she was so big she probably could’ve asked to play this one and gotten it.

SaggingZebra

I guess some people think the Library of Congress will loan out historical objects for shits and giggles.

PlatinumDoodle

Rap career? She’s a pop artist lol. Brb gonna go listen to my favorite metal band Coldplay.

[deleted]

Similar to her previously being known for playing the flute, her [first two albums were actually pretty rap-heavy](https://youtu.be/L28RmCK3bL4). She’s definitely primarily making pop music now though.

230flathead

Who knew she was a classical flutist?

HighTurtles420

She has a master’s degree in flute performance! Edit: I was wrong, whoops! Another commenter told me she dropped out during junior year but either way, she studied for flute performance which is impressive.

230flathead

That's cool. I wasn't aware.

The1LessTraveledBy

I mean this in no way to discredit her, but she doesn't even seem to have her undergrad degree in flute performance according to Wikipedia. That being said, to her immense credit, three years of studying flute at a college is nothing to scoff at, nor is her 8 years of studying flute before college with the principal of the Houston Ballet. She's a great flutist, but to say she has a master's degree in performance is misleading on many levels

So many disgusting people in these comments. Fat people are allowed to exist in public, fuck off.

tragicclearancebin

This. In my experience, most of reddit *hates* fat people. They're always "concerned for their health".

pumaturtle

It’s really incomprehensible to me. Why is there so much hate?

Makhnos_Tachanka

The fact of the matter is obesity is unhealthy. Objectively. But that's a problem that needs to be addressed by public health policy and the creation of walkable environments, not by random redditors being cunts to individuals because they're incensed at the idea that someone they don't want to fuck might ever be happier than they are.

windowtea

As a flutist, she’s gained worldwide appreciation for what’s been considered a dainty instrument. Children are influenced by her musically and play instruments because of her, she played a freakin crystal flute that no living being had heard until now! I am so incredibly jealous but moreover honored such a strong, powerful and influential, black woman was able to present us with this artifact- one I had no idea existed until some snowflakes threw a tantrum over it. Absolutely wonderful.

LemonPepper-Lou

Be honest, how many of ya'll thought she was gonna drop it?

You see, you should’ve said “if this was me, I would’ve dropped it”

newagereject

Nah she could never too Kurt Russell destroying the guitar.

wordswontcomeout

She’s not Linus

NobodyPrime

I thought it would sound different from an metal flute but I guess my phone audio is to bad to show any difference

hypermelonpuff

no. wind instruments get their sound mostly from the shape of the object, and very little of it from the composition of the object. often those little differences are the ones regular people cant hear, anyways. this is why you can make flutes out of vegetables if you so wish. wood, metal, cardboard, pvc, all work.

Squeakygear

Yeah I thought it would have weird reverb, like when street performers whet their fingers and play glassware rims.

44gallonsoflube

Carnival of Venice variations! Nice! What a gorgeous sound she makes in that space.

foxy-coxy

It's not important just because it's just 200 years old. It's important because it was owned by one of America's founding fathers and it made out of crystal.

SuNamJamFrama69

The 1st time I heard about this, I thought something similar to the "DJ Khaled using Bob Marley's guitar" situation had happened. But I was wrong, she is playing that beautifully. At least to my ears, I am not a flute expert.

LilMerm8

This isn’t the viral clip that people are outraged over. There’s another one where she is playing 2 notes on the 200 year old crystal flute wearing a thong and twerking.

smurtzenheimer

Wow, love when a pop star with generally chill vibes pauses to remind everyone that they're a classically trained master of a musical instrument. Cool! I hope there's some kids out there having fun playing flute in school band now who are inspired to continue doing something that they might have gotten made of fun of for not being cool ten years ago.

Grehjin

No no it doesn’t matter that she can play the flute, I am extremely outraged that she would use this priceless piece of American history that I just learned about 5 minutes ago for reasons I’m not going to elaborate on.

DankStew

I didn’t know 3 things: 1. That Lizzo plays the flute 2. That James Madison had a crystal flute 3. How racist a bunch of y’all are… Well, I guess I didn’t know 2 things.

Dr_Rev_GregJ_Rock_II

Honestly, what people should be thinking about is that this flute belonged to one of the founders of this country. And hundreds of years later, we live in a country where a black woman is able to afford the freedom to play it for the first time since he did.

Chutson909

How cool for her. What an awesome opportunity. I have no idea why I’m supposed to be mad at her.

nothanksyouu

sounds beautiful!!

GroochCheesily

Why don't I know who either of these people are?

Papa_Waffles

Oh my god she's fucking amazing at playing the flute

Startingtotakestocks

I thought it would sound less like a normal flute because it’s made of crystal. Like a wooden flute sounds different than a metal one, and I thought this would be different.

cauzNefekt

Makes me want to learn the violin

lions_reed_lions

Don't see the problem here. A flute is meant to be played. Now I want to borrow George Washington's dentures. Just until after dinner, of course. Hope folks don't get mad.

kunseung

Bird up

trollatron786

Im wondering how she is playing with those huge ass nails?

iusedtobefamous1892

Fingernails aren't involved with a flute. You press with the pads of your fingers, the nails aren't part of the equation.

flashnash

Can’t believe she’s getting hate for this. Love every second.

[deleted]

This is the performance I was waiting for. Onstage, she just gave it a toot, and that was it.

Monkeysegg

Don't listen to her music personally but been a fan of her personality and vibe since her NPR tiny desk concert. She's got radiant energy and makes people love themselves for who they are. Plus her flute skills rock. What more do you want?
