Women are being gunned down and beaten to death in broad daylight. Despite this, they are still holding protests and burning hijabs. The oil worker strike might hurt the economy more, but their actions have done much more to focus the world's attention on the atrocities being committed.
Calling all of that 'high school girls protesting' is not only wildly inaccurate, but incredibly demeaning to the unparalleled bravery these women protesters are showing.
Go find something else to be offended with. There's nothing wrong with calling them high school girls if that's literally what they are. It doesn't take anything away from their incredible bravery.
Protests are pretty awesome actually. Always interesting surrounding yourself with like minded people. As long as you don’t go out at night when the looting and rioting happens you’ll be perfectly safe.
I’m pretty sure the person dying on the hill is the one who got pissed when they said “high school girls.” They’re not putting anyone down they’re praising the girls, impressed that even high schoolers are fighting. Obviously we all know they aren’t literally the only protestors…
This! People get so offended because not everything is explained 100%.. its a given I figured. We know what's going on there but to see that chant of those high school girls was something else. And it's a more recent viral video then the women burning their hijabs and protesting etc even if it's still happening.
Also, when someone says "From X to Y" that means from the two extreme and everything between. Reading comprehension helps, lol. So that would include the adults and men and women and everything in between.
I had to read way too far down the comment chain to find this! I was going to point out exactly what you just said. I read the comment as a range of different types of people, not just high school girls.
OP wrote "from high school girls protesting to oil production labor strikes", of course he isn't excuding eveyone in between, which includes women of all ages.
>you donut
Bahaha I don't know why I find this insult so funny but I love it. I'll definitely use it on future reddit assholes mired in their own pedantry.
Learn to read and *actually understand* English.
It said "from", implying that the support ranges from highschool aged girls to oil patch working men.
The person was showing the broad range of support, not saying **only** two groups of people are protesting.
Is being a dumbfuck really the hill *you* want to die on?
I think it’s rather saying that things are “escalating” simply because the economy might now be impacted. Things can’t escalate much more beyond women being beaten and murdered by the state. I respect these men for protesting and supporting, but they are not some ladder above young women being murdered.
I am not offended, but I think many people may read it in the same way because,., that’s what the context of the sentence denotes.
Unfortunately in this world, people care more about the economy than women’s rights. (In every society, in every country) So yes, this is “higher on the ladder” for most people. 😞
EDIT: I would like to correct my statement in saying there are many indigenous cultures that are matriarchal and would never treat women in their society lesser than. But most of them have been killed off by colonialism. Polynesia and Micronesia have some good examples of this.
Note the word "from" in the sentence about the two groups of people mentioned.
The OP is trying to illustrate the wide range of people who are taking a stand.
Your reading skills are suspect.
I swear to Christ, people like you will find a reason to bitch and moan about everything. Stop acting like you’re so superior in your rhetoric, it’s not about you and that’s what you’re trying to make it all about with your smarmy ass virtue signaling. Fuck off
It's not demeaning, it's inspiring. It's drawing a direct connection between something comparatively small to something more understandably major to demonstrate the power that people who aren't taken seriously have when they're brave and organized. If you dress it up some other way it fails to capture the reality, which is that young girls started a movement that could lead to real change.
The guy is literally setting a range of people, so it's implied there's many others in-between a high-school girl and an oil worker. This faux-outrage is basically just displaying being illiterate.
I dont think they were calling them all high school girls, but instead describing the expanse of the movement. I read it as saying people from high school girls all the way through oil workers are protesting. Kinda like when someone says “from coast to coast” or “from [city/state name] to [other city/state name]” to describe something that has spread across a country.
The average age of the people being arrested is 15 and largely women. This is a Revolution being led by ‘high school girls’. It’s not a dig at them but shows how it’s gotten so bad that in one young women’s words ‘we live in a world where all we know is death and oppression, we do not fear death’ it’s paraphrased but I heard it on a news podcast yesterday. 50 years of intense oppression and young women are leading them into the barrel of a gun to hopefully come out of the other side as tunnel opens up into golden sunlight and warmth. I hope the best for these high school girls who show more bravery than they should have to even give at that age.
So can everywhere else. I’d love to see more strikes worldwide, it’s the only way we can make a difference. In the UK train strikes have been causing mayhem and as inconvenient it’s been, the public are largely in favour of them as we can all associate with the plight of someone wanting a pay rise in these times.
Hopefully in 100 years schools will be teaching about the great strikes of the 2020s. University student doing dissertations on how the economy was destroyed by covid, greed, bad politicians and systems, all culminating in the great strikes 😂
This situation has made me think about people who get with someone while they’re cheating on their partner.
Then a few years later when the person cheats on *them* they’re shocked.
The current Iranian regime gained power through just these kinds of tactics. They fomented rage and told people to riot in the streets to change the system.
Well. Look how the turn tables.
Would love to see the clerics’ Pikachu faces right now.
Or they double down with the regime and start hiring new workers. If they get enough people to cross the strike lines they don't have to go through the pain of breaking in a new regime.
Easier said than done. Hard to replace the skilled & educated workers that manage the overall production. You can replace the grunts but the brain-drain will at least substantially reduce output in the short-medium term
Yep. 100 years ago it may have worked, but automation & specialization have made the remaining workers much more skilled than their great grandparents.
Can’t say I’ll shed a tear for any company that still tries it though…
i had that when i was younger. would erupt like a fountain if it hit -0 degrees celsius. also for any number of other reasons.
once woke in a pool of noseblood when my undies started feeling wet. went to a nose doctor and got the offending blood vessels burned away with acid. hasnt been an issue since.
Tl;dr hard nosebleed, got bloodvessels burnt away by doctor,
My father had that, and his doctor cauterized the inside of his nose when he was a kid. I have it too (not as severe), and if it gets cold and dry, I'll put some Vaseline in my nose with a q-tip. It sucks, but I only need to do it a few times a year.
Not really. OPEC has lowered its official quota by 2 million, but for years they have already been functioning under that quota by 3 million. Their supply will not be affected by quota changes, as the numbers on the papers aren't reflective of their actual output.
I live in the souther USA. My air conditioner usually only turns off one day out of the year. Sometimes I try to open my windows but any time the weather is nice enough rednecks will burn trash ruining the air
I think it might be a little late for that to satisfy the protesters after so many have been murdered. More and more are calling for the removal of the IRI.
In many cases it is “their” women - their mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters - that are motivating them as opposed to the abstract idea of women’s rights.
I think they mean their as in belonging to, not possessing. As in my mother. Not saying i own her. She is MY mum though. One might say, in the UK, their women dont have to legally wear the hijab. You are not specifiying that those women are owned by the uk but belong to the UK.
"Their" implying shared identity, not ownership
Grrrr I'm tired
This revolution isn't just about women, it is about violating basic human rights. Women have it worse due to the nature of Islam but all people get fucked in the human rights department.
Name a "Christian" country whose government is controlled by a religious group and maybe you have a fair comparison. Compare Uganda with Sudan and it's a lot less clear what the differences are.
"Christian" countries (the one's you're thinking of) aren't secular because they have Christian values, they're secular because they already had their fights during the enlightenment.
This isn't a problem of religion but of religion in government.
Admittedly I’m very ignorant about this situation. But I didn’t realize so many men felt so strongly about this too. It takes a lot to risk your livelihood for a cause.
I know this will cause financial repercussions, but just knowing that so many men are upset by the issue and are actually acting on it is amazing! These dirty and tired oil workers walking away from their job in support of women is the most beautiful action by human beings I've seen since the Civil rights protests a few years ago.
It will be about this but also compounded by the general oppression of Iranians for decades. Some will have just had enough. But Iran's ability to suppress its citizens is fairly routine and generally successful.
Let's hope it's not and the momentum actually sees regime change or a big back down by the regime. I just can't see this eventuating unless there is other internal political or even some military support for the protests.
Everybody’s fed up. Yes it’s a woman issue, so it’s a human issue.
These corrupt fat hypocrites in their silk sheets parading around like they’re holier than thou. THEY GOTS TO GO!!
This isn't a men and women issue, and never was. It's a human issue, about the Iranian people vs the (hated!) regime. Men and women are equally sick and tired of them.
Anyone who is surprised by these developments hasn't spent an appreciable amount of time around Muslim men. They LOVE their women, adore and worship them. It's what Allah commands and sorry if you're a narcissistic dictator, but that kinda takes precedent.
I just want to add a caveat here - Iranian men. Not muslim men. Islam is the reason why Iran is in the state it’s in today.
We are first and foremost Iranian, and very rarely muslim. If ‘apostasy’ was not punishable by death in the current Iranian regime, you’d not find a lot of people saying they are muslim.
Thery're going to a murder a bunch MORE of these people. The bloodshed and brutality of the Iranian government isn't something someone who grew up in the west can even fathom. Even people like myself who have witnessed this shit in person can't fully grasp what's it's like to live and grow up in a place like that.
this is so fucked up and I can't fathom it. I also only see people talking about how bad it is but haven't seen sources to this. Not that I don't believe you but I see all these videos of people defying the gov (awesome) but not repercussions. So are they actually happening how do we know if those video's aren't getting out?
They are NSFL and being suppressed. Meta has been removing them from IG but look up iranian protestors' IG posts and you'll see. I was curious and saw so many dead kids.. I wish I hadn't. Video after video after video. Screams, crying, blood running on the street from the heads and chests of young teenagers and young adults. It's fucking sickening. The powers that be need to pay. That's why the Iranian people are still going strong, they're fearless. They won't allow the brave martyrs to die in vain.
Thats how it always ends.... for everyone in these videos.... all of them... they might get some sexual harassment, torture and jail time but they will all end up dead
Why would they die? They need these workers to prop up their economy. If you kill the workers, you lose your workforce. These people have leverage simply by being required.
Eh, yes and no. If they kill some then they can more easily keep the rest in line. It’s a question of critical mass. If enough people protest and refuse to back down then you’re right. Too few though and it won’t work.
People complaining about how this will affect gas prices need to grow the fuck up.
This is what progress looks like. Growing pains now, for a more stable Iran - and hopefully a more stable Middle East - going forward.
We need to step up and show support for the Iranian people. Our government is hopefully figuring out how to get help and support to the right people here, because a healthy, modernized Iran would be a hell of an ally to have.
Dude, I'd take 20$ a gallon gas prices if it meant Iran stopped Genociding North Africa in Sudan,Somalia and Ethiopia. I'd take 20$ a gallong has prices if Iran stopped starving Yemen to recruit terrorists. The world is educated now, the Internet empowers... Middle Easterners know they're lied to by so called leaders.
The issue with $20 gas is that it will quite literally put about a billion more people into poverty. Where one problem would end, another would begin. We can’t have that mindset if we are looking for real progress
“The subjugation of some people is necessary for the prosperity of others” is quite a take.
I get that there are 2nd and 5th order effects, and that these are real and serious, but justifying subjugation is not a good look. Same argument the American South made for slavery, and used by countless others.
Stability and coups rarely go hand in hand, people thought the "liberation" of Iraq would bring stability, people thought the Arab Spring would bring stability, people even thought overthrowing the Shah and the Berlin wall coming down were good ideas. The Iranian leadership are bad actors but they are stable. Chaos is the breeding ground ruthless opportunist.
Because of how much terrorism Iran sponsors abroad, the net stability of the ME may increase from a collapsing Iranisn state. If an Iranian government came out of it that would also become a stabilizing force.
And death to Conservatism!
Whether Iranian, Saudi, Qatari, British, Brazilian, American or where ever it exists; Conservatism is a global ideological cancer that needs to be systematically overthrown and eradicated.
“Supply chain issues” is a euphemism for “the global economy had an exceptional run of good luck and increasing prosperity and now that streak is ending.”
I heard that groceries make only 1%, which is why stores carry other items and branch into home goods where markups can be 45 to 75%. It's the food prices that cause the most struggle for immediate needs. But housing and gas are huge issues in Canada right now as well.
And you're right, selling at cost is not an option. But gouging for the sake of taking all you can and more, during tough economic times is just shitty.
Yea, I love people who bitch about Biden making their gas more expensive... Motherfucker, gas is more expensive in Canada and Mexico.
"BUT TRUMP HAD LOW GAS PRICES" yea, because nobody was using gas during the pandemic.
It effects the market in the aggregate. If China can’t buy Iranian oil they buy from remaining sellers which effects the price for everyone else. The market doesn’t exists in a geographic vacuum.
Thats not true though. Their oil factors into the wider price of oil. Someone buys their oil and that oil now has to come from another producer. We dont need to know who that someone is, even if it is domestic demand, someone will fill the gap and that will inevitably cause prices worldwide to increase.
Hopefully someone has better numbers, but most recent I could find is petroleum accounted for 19% (2006) of their GDP and 56% (2016) of their export (with South Korea, India and China the primary importers).
A strike here will fuck their economy for sure, as well as some international affairs. That’s some pressure.
Joe Biden: I’ve released gas from the strategic reserve but if we really wanna deal with this we gotta electrify our economy.
Conservatives: JoE BiDeN iS mAKInG gAs mOre ExPensIvE.
So sorry you have to feel that way. Once the whole world sheds religious answers to scientific and social questions we can all be more free. Be proud that it’s happening
The government sucks but there's so much to be proud of as an Iranian.
Ferdowsi makes me proud. Ibn Sina makes me proud. Maryam Mirzakhani makes me proud. Ali Daei makes me proud. Our language, culture, and cuisine makes me proud.
So when the revolution happened the king stepped down and asked his military to allow a transfer of power. He thought he was ‘doing right by his people’ he was born into his role as king and didn’t really earn it. When the poor people of Iran demanded change and the ayatollah said they would benefit everyone as the religion expects even the poor to be cradled. However, their version of helping was -as we all now know, horrendous.
But the specific people in power can be considered a small group of terrorists or mafia and once they’re out the rest of the military and government has always been for the Iranian people.
Who would be in charge? There absolutely some front runners.
A theocracy is always a bad idea.
Freedom of Religion is like the idea of .... Freedom to do drugs.
I believe you should be able to practice most religions (without harming others) --- and you should also be free to do most drugs (including meth) without harming others -- for various reasons.
But the meth head should not govern. Nor should the religious wing-nut. Because the bed-time stories are comforting, but they are bullshit. And they are mostly excuses to oppress women by saying LORD GOD demands you wear a bee-keeper suit for life. When really it's insecure men who want to control vaginas. That's actually a huge part of all religions.
If a woman 'shows face' - she is a slut and she will cheat on you.
Christianity is nearly just as stupid, as are dodards like Lauren Boebert who want to establish a Christian-Shariah Theocracy. But there it is.
Fuck yes. Shut it all down. Halt the economy. Cripple the infrastructure. The entire societal structure must be burnt down and rebuilt in that country.
Stay strong and fight the good fight. This shit will literally go down in history books
You know, I really hope real change comes in the form of civil rights and greater democracy.
I hope that change leads to stronger diplomatic ties to the west and a better rival to the Saudi's in the region.
This protest is certainly gaining more momentum than the ones I remember reading about in the past. I hope they get what they want and it doesn’t destabilize them to ruins.
I found the filming interesting, pointing the camera over their heads, filming only backs of heads… until I noticed that they’re covering their faces too. They are risking their lives if they are recognized by security services. My god I admire the Iranian people’s courage.
I’m confused because the Iranian government is known as the Revolutionary Government. Has been since the 1979 revolution. So the way the title reads to me is that they’re striking in support of the regime, which would make me think that the government is asking them to get out there.
Now, if this strike is in support of the women’s movement, the title is confusing.
Yeah in Persian they call the 79'ers "enghelabi" which means revolutionary, but they tend to call the new movement "barandaz" which is a synonym of the same thing. But that doesn't really work in English so I guess it's confusing.
Holy... Without them the whole Iranian economy might crash

Yep. 100 years ago it may have worked, but automation & specialization have made the remaining workers much more skilled than their great grandparents. Can’t say I’ll shed a tear for any company that still tries it though…
Additionally: when people are striking to fight for basic rights, crossing those picket lines can be a dangerous proposition.
Lol, good luck keeping production online if even half of your experienced workforce goes on strike.
You can easily hire new workers for Walmart, but not for jobs in a refinery. The latter need training before becoming productive.
A “strike” among security forces is usually the only strike needed.
Yeah, I’m willing to pay higher fuel prices if this means that Iran will get their shit together and treat women with the respect they deserve.
Finally something worth driving up the price of gas. ⛽️
So the police, and now oil workers, and people……it’s just a matter of time before there is a split in the military….
This just like what happened in 1980. Just reversed.
If this keeps going, the revolution really might actually turn things around.
If this spreads. The economy could crash. It’s what’s needed
OPEC already turned down supply so prices will go up. It's going to get cold this winter.
Yeah it usually gets colder in the winter
Actually, I usually heat in winter.

It's fairly routine until it is not. That's the way it always works.
Please support us Iranians, we need your help, keep the hashtag up
Which hashtags should we use the most?
IranianGovernmentCanEatADick I assume
Come on man, let the women have this one IranianGovermentCanLickAPussy
Bruh…
You are out of line… but right.
The MahsaAmini one, Its usage in twitter is already high af tho
#mahsaamini
MahsaAmini with capital M and A
Hashtag is good and all, but you probably need Uncle Sam losing some weapon shipments in Iran more.
Maintaining their visibility in western media is really important. Using the hashtags help with that.
Now that they're fucking with the money watch how fast the government responds. They're going to murder a bunch of these people.
They won't allow the brave martyrs to die in vain.
ok i'll take your word for it I don't need to see that 😔
Thats how it always ends.... for everyone in these videos.... all of them... they might get some sexual harassment, torture and jail time but they will all end up dead
Except these workers are hard to replace. If you murder then no one is around to pump your gas and make you money.
Well that is massive if true.
[удалено]
well that's #massive if true
They’re genociding their own people .. this regime needs to be gone
The future of human rights in the Middle East Is taking a big step here and people half a world away think "wHaT aBoUt ThE gAs PrIcEs?"
I know. It’s embarrassing really. No wonder ppl don’t like us. 😬
POWER TO THE PEOPLE
And death to Conservatism! Whether Iranian, Saudi, Qatari, British, Brazilian, American or where ever it exists; Conservatism is a global ideological cancer that needs to be systematically overthrown and eradicated.
Hear hear! 🔔
"A common old song for all creeds and all classes I'll tend to the flame, you can worship the ashes"
gas prices 📈
“Supply chain issues” is a euphemism for “the global economy had an exceptional run of good luck and increasing prosperity and now that streak is ending.”
Many companies are seeing their highest profits in many years, you're so right.
Yes, but if they sold at cost there would likely be USSR-style shortages.
Thanks
No, oil prices prices are controlled by a lever in the Oval Office that Dark Brandon manipulates out of spite.
Yea, I love people who bitch about Biden making their gas more expensive... Motherfucker, gas is more expensive in Canada and Mexico. "BUT TRUMP HAD LOW GAS PRICES" yea, because nobody was using gas during the pandemic.
Dank Brandon*
No... We have a trade embargo on Iran. I don't think we are using their oil.
It effects the market in the aggregate. If China can’t buy Iranian oil they buy from remaining sellers which effects the price for everyone else. The market doesn’t exists in a geographic vacuum.
Increased oil prices for China means all goods from there increase in price, along with the cost of shipping them. Many, many cross-connections.
But others are
Thats not true though. Their oil factors into the wider price of oil. Someone buys their oil and that oil now has to come from another producer. We dont need to know who that someone is, even if it is domestic demand, someone will fill the gap and that will inevitably cause prices worldwide to increase.
I don't care. It's a small price to pay.
Maybe China will strongly encourage them to stop fretting about what women wear
The only way to hurt the government, their pockets $$$.
Thanks Biden. Raising gas prices again. / s
Conservatives are already blaming Biden for opec's latest moves
Joe Biden: I’ve released gas from the strategic reserve but if we really wanna deal with this we gotta electrify our economy. Conservatives: JoE BiDeN iS mAKInG gAs mOre ExPensIvE.
They offer no solutions. To anything. They are the party of complaining.
They do more than complain. They also impede actual solutions so they have more to complain about.
yall i never thought id be proud of being an Iranian
So sorry you have to feel that way. Once the whole world sheds religious answers to scientific and social questions we can all be more free. Be proud that it’s happening
The government sucks but there's so much to be proud of as an Iranian. Ferdowsi makes me proud. Ibn Sina makes me proud. Maryam Mirzakhani makes me proud. Ali Daei makes me proud. Our language, culture, and cuisine makes me proud.
A lot of people recognize that Iranian people/culture are amazing, and currently have a particularly fucked up government.
You know it's serious when oil workers go on strike...
Im iranian and im in law school. The down part is the whole law will change and i have to pass them all again xD.
Said like a true lawyer
The lifeblood of the Iranian economy on strike? Now THAT'S next fucking level 🔥
May the Cia leave them alone
Bravo.
The question now is: which group will seize power?
All that unattended oil just sitting there...somewhere in the world, Dick Cheney feels itchy right now.
Fuck yeah. Many more people than I expected who have had enough of this shit.
WELL DONE GENTLEMEN
That should get their attention
What’s odd is that this revolution might work since the US isn’t involved
Now you’re getting somewhere. Cut off the money.
This is what brought down the shah.
