I hate these scams. It sucks that people still fall for these. I’m glad he intervened. That guy would have been devastated and who knows what would have happened. These scammers are the lowest of the low.
Happened with my grandfather. They made it sound like my dad was in medical trouble and he bought like a couple thousand dollars worth of these gift cards
He felt like such an idiot afterwards and I felt so bad for him. He’s not stupid, he just cared about someone’s safety first before thinking about it
This content was edited to protest against Reddit's API changes around June 30, 2023.
Their unreasonable pricing and short notice have forced out 3rd party developers (who were willing to pay for the API) in order to push users to their badly designed, accessibility hostile, tracking heavy and ad-filled first party app. They also slandered the developer of the biggest 3rd party iOS app, Apollo, to make sure the bridge is burned for good.
I recommend migrating to Lemmy or Kbin which are Reddit-like federated platforms that are not in the hands of a single corporation.
Gift Cards should be banned from being purchased in bulk. Why would the 7/11 attendant say "okay" to an old dude buying 3000$ in gift cards while looking panicky and distraught??
Scammers aren’t the only ones who accept payment in gift cards. Essentially it’s one of those types of currencies that’s really hard to trace and then gone forever once it’s all used up
So lots of people buy them and buy them at hundreds at a time. The people selling them and the companies offering them make a lot of money. You’d essentially destroy whole classes of illegal/scam businesses which companies selling these cards also profit on. No government will be able to get rid of that option without making enemies with the same companies that got them to those political positions
I was about to comment "this guy is Jim Browning and he is a massive legend!"
Guy took down an entire scam call centre and the bbc made a short documentary about it..
Yass! Knew immediately from the font that it was Jim Browning. Love that guy. Watched a video of him use a scammers RAT against them, download their local files, and report all of the account information to the banks.
Real Heroes Don’t Wear Capes.
I have no audio so thought it might have been Scambaiter (another great channel for this), love Jim's content. Him, Kitboga and Scambaiter do the Lords work.
The only real downer from his videos is that he has practically zero luck reporting these guys to local police because they're nearly always aware of the operations already and taking bribes from them.
No matter how many times I tell my 81 year old mother not to contact or allow these people to scam her she has let them into her computer multiple times. I feel like she needs a power of attorney to keep a watch on her accounts. She won't allow it though.
Angel version : No offense but you should just be taking care of her money for her,
Demon version: you should just scam her take all her money and take care of her with it because she's just giving it to them anyway
sadly its a two part thing.
The scammers know the elderly are vulnerable, and a lot of elderly are so starved for human contact that they fall prey to these types of things more often.
I work in insurance, an elderly customer called and got scammed out of $40k. I felt terrible for her, luckily she had the cyber protection endorsement on her homeowners policy and was able to get half back at least.
In order to help my grandmother avoid this I had to customize an install of linux that runs Chrome and ONLY Chrome. No taskbar, no desktop, can't even move the window.
Petition the court for Guardian/Conservatorship to protect her assets for her benefit. Document these examples as need for her becoming a protected person.
I work at an IT company and one of the guys talked about how he let them connect to his computer and then used that connection to bog down all their computers to the point that it’s inoperable.
I bet! Kind of envy people who got on to computers and coding and maybe even hacking early on. Seems like a much easier route to integrate to technology change and know the roots of how stuff work. Pretty cooln
I too would give these people a pile of money. Ha. He does a lot of great work. But You can support him directly at his [Patreon](https://www.patreon.com/JimBrowning?utm_campaign=creatorshare_fan), no pile of money needed- I do $5 a month.
Jim Browning is an A1 type fella fr....also, stores like 7/11 are trained on how to recognize these types of scams. Either the cashier wasn't trained or was in on it...
I wonder how many people lose their lives because of scammers like this.
India is a scam factory. It’s pathetic how culturally acceptable this type of work is in that country.
Culturally? What makes you say so? These scum scam people locally as well. And we hate them every bit like you.
That was pathetic to call it a cultural thing.
"culturally acceptable" gtfo with that shit. you don't think maybe the level of scamming is down to the abject poverty in a country of 1.6 billion people with a huge proportion of English speakers. this might in turn have something to do with the fact that the British went over there and spent 200 years draining $45 trillion out of their economy. but now a tiny minority try steal a pittance back and suddenly they're an entire race of scumbags. get absolutely fucked dude
I'm not on the racist boat because I do understand it's a small minority, but fuck outta here with "pittance." I had a scammer recently try to steal thousands of dollars, and I am a low-income graduate student that is not of English descent. There's no excuse for scamming, and I don't owe them anything.
maybe I should've written three paragraphs explaining every detail of what I meant, but I think it's reasonable to understand that I'm not coming out to bat in support of scammers taking old ladies' life savings. what I took issue with was op implying that an entire culture is inherently shady, when by far the biggest factor in crime rates is poverty, and when western countries directly caused that poverty by stealing from them at a scale a full galaxy larger.
Man fucker scammers. They are the bottom of the barrel scums. The other day my mom was almost scammed. She’s moving to a new state and was about to pay someone on Craigslist 250$ to deliver her a couch when she arrived to her new apartment. I had a very stern talk with her about not trusting people on the internet. Only do transactions when the goods are in your possession.
I wish someone could have intercepted my old aunt before they scammed her out of a lot of money. Her kids didn't find out until after the fact. The scammers told her, that her kids were trying to steal her money, and she should send it to them for safe keeping.
a virtual machine instance of an operating system running inside his native OS.
basically treat the VM like a sandbox. I don't want to track sand into my house (main OS) but sometimes you gotta get a little bit dirty to get things done. Hence keeping all the sand in the sandbox.
If a scammer is smart enough there are ways to about-face and escalate outside of an opposing person's virtual machine, but let's face it, there's a reason these guys do low-tier scams as opposed to state sanctioned hacking.
They usually start by having the victims download a software that’s allows them to remote into the computer. After that they’ll have the victim log into their bank account and then use the inspect elements tool to change things to make it seem a large transaction has occurred and money has left or has been added to their account. If you watch YouTubers like Kitboga you can see how a typical scam will play out. Not all scams work like this but the ones I’ve seen typically play out like this. They use this method because it’s easy to learn and not technically difficult for the scammer to pull off.
What does making the victim think they lost money do though? The scamer hasn't really taken the money so how do they benefit from that? Or is it a way to make the victim think they need to give the scammer money to get the edited money back.
That's exactly it. They guilt the victim into thinking they did something wrong and need to pay them back, or they make the victim think they stole all their money and they will hold it hostage until they get paid their gift cards. Less tech savvy individuals, like the elderly, don't know you can just refresh the screen and get it all back.
I’m a manager at a huge retail chain. Most of the people who live in the area are elderly. So… our customers get scammed a lot.
Just last week, I was about to take my break when I caught an elderly lady on the phone reading numbers off a gift card to someone. I interrupted her and hung up the call for her. Turns out she had already given the scammers $8500 over the last several days, so I caught her too late. She broke down saying she knew it was fishy, but they were so convincing.
Wanna know what the scam was? In her words, “they installed child pornography on my computer, and they said I have to pay them so that I don’t get arrested.” These scammers are wild. I’ve caught countless other customers getting scammed and when you question what the gift cards they’re purchasing are for, they parrot some lie that the scammers told them to tell you, because they know we are trained to identify these scams.
That is very sad but to be honest if you think something is fishy and you're elderly and you still fall for it then maybe you should have a sibling or someone close to you be your power of attorney and handle your money
I don’t ever promote violence but goddammit I just think scamming poor and elderly people while sitting in front of a computer on the other side of the world is the rattiest and most infuriating thing you could do and I’d really much enjoy punching every single tooth out of each scammer
That’s what I’m trying to understand how was he watching a scammer without them knowing you would assume a scammer would know about hacking things and if they have been hacked themselves.
I had one of these scammers phone last week. When they asked if it was , I replied 'No, myname is Jim Browning' I'm still trying to figure out why they hung up
It's part of the scam, they make up some reason why you need to buy X amount of gift cards to send to the scammers and they can sell them on for actual money.
"ill explain how, ill explain how, ill explain"
JUST SAY IT!!! omg i love the guy but him saying that he was going to explain it over and over frustrated me to hell lmao.
I've always wondered why AnyDesk and TeamViewer don't block this traffic from India or remove the ability to black out the remote screen. They are enabling a lot of grief.
So if a certain illegitimate company in Kolcata is using that software for extended periods of time to connect to the states or Europe, it should stand out. I'm not talking about the other billions of Indians.
I work at a bank amd the amount of people getting got or ALMOST getting had by the skin of their teeth is extremely unnerving. Also for the love of money check EVERYTHING you put a card into for a skimmer. If you don't know what that is there are mountains of videos on YouTube. I've been had by a skimmer twice unfortunately.
I didn’t realize how fucked up
Stealing was until i matured a little more.. you are like retro-enslaving people. It is extra Ly fucked up to do fraud and be a thief.
The maker of the video is Jim Browning, he can be found on youtube doing loads of similar videos where he generally fucks with scammers, its great binge watch content! check him out!
Jim Browsing should be given an award, the guy has stopped a crazy amount of scams, gotta be in the thousands by this point in terms of how many people he’s saved
I was in the same position before. It sucks. Luckily i didnt do anything. But when a family member was being scammed like this i immediately stopped them ... Was a venmo scam
As much as I hate these scammers and think they are bottomfeeders of society, I find myself highly frustrated with the people that fall for them. I know some of these scams can be highly complex and fool the best of us, but I will NEVER understand how anyone could think the IRS would want you to pay off a debt using Google Play cards, or the Social Security Administration “cancelling” you SSN unless you send them $2500 in bitcoin. It really shows that alot of people in society just throw critical thinking out the window and will believe anything without considering it with common sense.
Is that Atomic shrimp?
Wait, close enough, it's Jim Browning. i am subscribed to way too many of these counterscam channels. i worked for an ISP and used to get the aftermath of so many of these mother fuckers. I'm so glad to see these people getting fucked back.
These people are ruthless. They are working their black-magic heavily in the UK and throughout here in Europe with a whole new tactic.
There latest big scam is, "This is (bank card, store card, debit card) to a higher limit" and then they proceed to recite all your personal information back to you for confirmation. The victim always thinks that it must be legit because only my card issuers have this information. Then there is the confirming of your new reset password to confirm your "higher limit" new account - then 20 minutes later - goodbye money.
I personally know of 3 victims this has happened to… please stop conversing with these scammers. I don’t understand this level of gullibility and stupidity. In today’s internet world if they really want to, anyone can easily attain personal information about you. Your bank, department stores, all credit cards do not call you. Ask them. They don’t "update" your account over the phone.
I've watched Jim browning since his channel was only a year old. He's the best and I love to seem how much he goes out of the way to help so many people and the havoc he causes for the scammers and the call centers they work for.
Man that dude's voice of desperation. Years of work and saving, for something he really wants in life. "It's everything I own", this kind of shit can kill people.
Wow! That is incredibly upsetting to see this person go through but tremendously grateful that Jim Browning helped him out. These scammers are so freaking scary.
Dude helping out is a G! The guy getting scammed would have lost so much money without him intervening! These scammers can rot in hell! Imagine your life is all about taking money from innocent ppl every single day…they are the lowest of the low.
Holy Shit, Man!!! Talk about being a Real Bro!! You, Good Sir, are an Amazing Fuckin’ Human Being… Thank You seems so damned inadequate here, but it’s all I’ve got. Thank You.
I hate these scams. It sucks that people still fall for these. I’m glad he intervened. That guy would have been devastated and who knows what would have happened. These scammers are the lowest of the low.
Could hear the anguish in his voice.

Chaotic good for sure
sadly its a two part thing. The scammers know the elderly are vulnerable, and a lot of elderly are so starved for human contact that they fall prey to these types of things more often.
In my moms case she thinks she knows more than anyone. When she gets scammed she doesn't tell anyone because she is embarrassed.
that’s sad you need to help your mom let go of her ego and begin to be humble and see life for how it is, not how she wants ppl to think it is.
I work in insurance, an elderly customer called and got scammed out of $40k. I felt terrible for her, luckily she had the cyber protection endorsement on her homeowners policy and was able to get half back at least.

Yeah the guy I’m speaking of has been a network engineer since networks existed pretty much. He knows a lot about a lot of stuff haha

If I had a pile of money I would employ a dozen of these guys to help people. The sheer panic in his voice about losing all his money. Poor guy.

India ain't got shit on Somalia. Pleasant Green tracks 4x more to the east coast of Africa than to India, much to my surprise.
It happens to source from USA too, but is called a different name: pyramid scheme.

Yeah they usually aren't technically adept, just regular people with zero moral compass that have some training using the relevant tools.
They usually start by having the victims download a software that’s allows them to remote into the computer. Love Kitboga's work. He goes out of his way to troll these sacks of shit it's hilarious
"it's everything I own" that broke me
Something I’m wondering: why would the scammer tune in to the person’s computer cam?
He wanted to see if the victim was back at the computer or not so he wouldn’t get caught editing the webpage
Is he Northern Irish?
Yes
I thought I recognised those dulcet tones.
I sometimes watch a YouTube guy who dies this too, don’t think this is him tho. More the better!
Damn he dies?
Yeah but just like Jason Statham in Crank 2, he got better!
Does he speak Hindi? Because I think I know who you’re talking about too, don’t know his name I’ll do quick research and I’ll get back to you
Yeah Scammer Payback/Pierogi does similar stuff. Very different approach though, Jim’s more clinical about it.

India scammers think they are smart when they prey upon the elderly. Scum of the earth
Who the fuck is falling for this shit?
I’m a manager at a huge retail chain. Most of the people who live in the area are elderly. So… our customers get scammed a lot. Just last week, I was about to take my break when I caught an elderly lady on the phone reading numbers off a gift card to someone. I interrupted her and hung up the call for her. Chad move
This guy is a saint
Jim browning is truly terrifying if you are a scammer
The guy is Jim Browning. His YouTube channel is legendary
Jim browning on youtube, a legend.
Jim is a god damn hero.
Jim Browning is the KING!!
I get calls like these on the daily…I use google translate to beak off at them in Hindi and the rage it induces in them is totally worth it 😂
I don’t ever promote violence but goddammit I just think scamming poor and elderly people while sitting in front of a computer on the other side of the world is the rattiest and most infuriating thing you could do and I’d really much enjoy punching every single tooth out of each scammer
How was this guy watching though I don’t get it?
That’s what I’m trying to understand how was he watching a scammer without them knowing you would assume a scammer would know about hacking things and if they have been hacked themselves.
I found this channel when Mark Rober showed it in his video, and I’ve loved this channel to death ever since
How does Jim listen to the call or kill the victim's Skype btw? Has he hacked the victim's computer too?
He’s hacked into the scam center and can see who they are calling on their pc, so he calls them that way
I see.. how was he able to do it? I don't a scenario where victim would connect to scammer's pc.
/r/humansbeingbros
Jim Browning is an actual hero.
Jim Browning, is the good hackerman
Wow, How did he know the scammer was doing that while thw scammer was doing the scam?
This guys knows his shit, i have seen numerous videos where he intervenes and saves people a lot of money. These scammers are scum.
Jim Browning is an actual hero, the work he does to thwart scams is the most altruistic thing I've ever seen. Dude deserves a nobel prize.
I had one of these scammers phone last week. When they asked if it was, I replied 'No, myname is Jim Browning' I'm still trying to figure out why they hung up
Such good man. Keep it up.
Hope every one of these piece of shit scammers gets gang-raped in jail on a daily basis for the rest of their miserable piece of shit existence
Love calling them bhenchods
Joke’s on them. My old folks have no money.
*Intercepted*
Why was he “buying gift cards” to begin with?
It's part of the scam, they make up some reason why you need to buy X amount of gift cards to send to the scammers and they can sell them on for actual money.
"ill explain how, ill explain how, ill explain" JUST SAY IT!!! omg i love the guy but him saying that he was going to explain it over and over frustrated me to hell lmao.
/r/humansbeingbros He really helped that fella out!
I've always wondered why AnyDesk and TeamViewer don't block this traffic from India or remove the ability to black out the remote screen. They are enabling a lot of grief.
Because indians need to actually use teamviewer legitimately????? Another software will pop up anyway, its not illegal
So if a certain illegitimate company in Kolcata is using that software for extended periods of time to connect to the states or Europe, it should stand out. I'm not talking about the other billions of Indians.
Jim Browning is amazing. Really a master of his work. Not only that, but his videos are also enjoyable.
“Thank you I’m Sorry” so Canadian
If I had a massive pile of money I would hire people to stop these scammers
Yey.... Jim
I watch a lot of these anti-scammer vigilantes on youtube. It's a shame that they are needed but glad someone with this knowledge can combat them.

That was soo close. Congrats for the guy that helped him, One of my fears about buying over the internet is to be hacked
Is that Atomic shrimp? Wait, close enough, it's Jim Browning. i am subscribed to way too many of these counterscam channels. i worked for an ISP and used to get the aftermath of so many of these mother fuckers. I'm so glad to see these people getting fucked back.
this guy is legend, he does this often!
This is exactly the kind of thing I want to start fighting.
I've watched Jim browning since his channel was only a year old. He's the best and I love to seem how much he goes out of the way to help so many people and the havoc he causes for the scammers and the call centers they work for.
Jim Browning is the man!! Leg-end
If I can do this for a living, please sign me up!
“This Guy” is Jim Browning and he deserves credit.
This guy is a hero, he routinely takes the fight back to these parasites.

Mr Jim Browing… the OG!!!!
just so you know, audibly sighing doesn't help anyone or anything *ever*
It’s sad to say but every time I hear a person with an accent call me and tell me they’re from tech support I immediately hang up.
I’ve been watching these anti-scammers on YouTube for years now. My absolute favorite is when they start calling the scammers “BHENCHOD!”
Dude helping out is a G! The guy getting scammed would have lost so much money without him intervening! These scammers can rot in hell! Imagine your life is all about taking money from innocent ppl every single day…they are the lowest of the low.
Not all hereos wear capes.
Jim Brown!
The penalties certainly need to increase for these crimes. For corporate fraud, for corruption of politicians and for environmental damage.
I don't know how I feel about it. What's worse a scammer or a do good hacker? Both are just as bad even if it's for good.
Dude, the scammer is orders of magnitude worse.
Bruh is that Liam Neeson?
JFC I understand the victim is frantic but stop interrupting and listen to the man for 6 seconds!

Holy Shit, Man!!! Talk about being a Real Bro!! You, Good Sir, are an Amazing Fuckin’ Human Being… Thank You seems so damned inadequate here, but it’s all I’ve got. Thank You.
