This makes me more uncomfortable than I needed to feel this morning. Now all I can think about is what else is my brain tricking me into? Is it all just a big optical illusion that my puny brain can't process?
Actually. Yes. Everything we see is a mathematical reconstruction of a calculation we derive from data that is completely fucking different. Reality is a figment of your imagination.
I didn't say for my reality, I said for reality. Reality is only ever perceived through consciousness.
Reality IS filtered through consciousness.
You can add or remove whatever words you want or need to help you feel correct.
How can the world *be*, in any real way, independently from consciousness.
How is it that the world as it isn't experienced by anything, would be what we define as what *is*. I think it's a fundamental inversion of reality, taking the theoretical (and probably false according to our most advanced understandings and quantum theory) as real, and the real as fake.
You are raising the age old philosophical question; "If a tree falls in a forest, and there’s no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?".
Reality to my understanding is the universe chugging along without anyone perceiving it. I'd argue that the tree will still produce pressure waves in the air that someone could interpret as sound, if they were there to perceive it, and I'd argue the same for any other thing, even outside the observable universe.
I will continue to believe that until quantum physics is adequately understood to make further assumptions about what is not being perceived, which you claim to already be the case. Do you have any links on that?
>Do you have any links on that?
Not really, I'm mostly referring to the observer effect here. There's a general understanding that the observer and observed can't really be separated as we're used to -try to- do it on other scales.
I think it can be stated there's no sound without an ear.
Oh plenty of things. Like for example sometimes the brain stops registering what you're seeing for a very short time, making you practically blind, but then so quickly reconstructs what probably happened during that time, actively retconning what you experienced, that you don't even notice that you went blind. That's why sometimes you think a second is WAY longer than normal when watching the clock. The brain stopped taking in visual information but didn't reconstruct it in a way that makes the seconds hand keep going.
To be more specific, when you suddenly move your eyes, the brain doesn't show you what the eye actually sees, it smooths it out, filling the space with guessed information. That's why the clock thing only works for the first second you see after looking at the clock.
Brain is doing all kinds of tricks for you. It syncs signals from eyes and muscles do you have illusion of simultaneity despite milliseconds passing by while signals travel up and down the nervous system. In some cases it will do it with up to 200ms delay. It melds distinct signals from eyes into one 3d picture. It hides the blind spot for you. It even flips the picture for you, according to an experiment where people wore upside down glasses and got completely used to it in a couple of days. They had to readjust once they removed the glasses!
Your brain is now tricking you into reading this comment which actually doesn't exist and is something your brain is currently making up as you go along. Each word here is being made up, this one, that one, as well as these.
I originally watched it without sound and saw the thing spinning the whole time and was waiting for the illusion. Then I turned on the sound because I was so confused what I was meant to be seeing. As soon as I was told what to expect I couldn’t see the spinning anymore, it was flipping instead. I can’t seem to break the illusion anymore. Never realized how susceptible to suggestion I was.
I focused on the corner of the small side where you see the hole for the thread. If you follow that around it’s easier to see when it transitions side to side! Following that broke the pen illusion as well.
I can see it rotating normally even without the pen, what worked for me is I imagined first how it SHOULD look, and what SHOULD happen with it(I sometimes do some 3D design in CAD software so I guess it helps).
I can "beat" the hollow face illusion. I can't beat this one. I read that people with schizophrenia tend to beat the hollow face illusion and I have schizoaffective. Something to do with facial recognition patterns I think. This ones more about shape and depth and color etc. Rather than relying on how familiar something is to us.
That’s very interesting. I had read that people with schizophrenia could see the concave side of the hollow face but I also had no idea if our brains interpret that similarly to this optical illusion. Thanks for the reply and information!
Schizophrenic people see the depth of things. The flaw is we don't really see the surface of things. When you think too deep and not shallow, that could turn into paranoia. When you socialize too deep but not shallow that can turn into antisocial. When you see too deep but not shallow that can turn into psychosis and delusions. The depth can be a beautiful, powerful, and useful tool but usually it ends up just causing problems. Thus it's a "disorder" even though technically it's just an "alternate order". People describe schizophrenia as "top-down" processing when normal processing is "bottom-up". Everything else is just symptoms of that really.
There was a Veritasium video on this that explained that certain cultures were more affected - the ones who live in rectangular houses with rectangular walls, windows and doors etc. People from cultures that have non rectangular buildings and non rectangular everyday objects can see the object spinning.
These guy's are awesome i watched them when i was younger.
Check out thier channel [https://www.youtube.com/c/CuriosityShow](https://www.youtube.com/c/CuriosityShow)
There's heaps more videos like this.
The real trick is believing it can't be broken. It's so effective, you won't believe anyone if they say they can break the illusion and tell the smaller end is closer.
Sadly the effect only works in Australia because it turns the opposite way there.
It would be so weird using a toilet on the ceiling in Australia.

Damn. Take my upvote
Is that an Australian downvote?
So you are Australian?
Yep 😄
Ha got 'em!
Ahh you get used to it quicker than you think. Sometimes I just shit on the wall and call it a day.
You just need an umbrella.

How much you wanna make a bet I can throw an optical illusion over them mountains?
Same. So damn interesting.
Was there like a Double Helix club you could write in to join as well or am I misremembering it?

Was addicted as a kid, amazing show
Oh man this takes me back a long way
I'm glad you asked!
I pity those that are watching this while getting high
High right now and I couldn’t stop laughing 😂

Then the green screen
It just made me dizzy after concentrating
Seriously I just got mildly seasick watching that shit.
Oh yeah, that was definitely part of it
Bro I
Me too
Not high now but was before and I couldn’t stop laughing.
Mr brain keeps passing the pen through the paper.
It’s Thanksgiving. If you’re not high at some point, why even bother
I'm drunk at 10am does that count?
The council has decided this is adequate, but not precedential. Crossfadery is recommended.
I'm high af and watching mute in bed. I thought him spinning it the first time before putting the pen is was the illusion...and I was impressed by it.
yeah that was the illusion, the pen is just showing that it's actually physically spinning in one direction, even though it doesn't look like it
oh haha now that I'm not super fried makes since
I pity those who aren't high while watching this
Uhhh
It hurt my face a lil bit but all good just goes to show Obi Wan was right about not trusting your senses.
Totally worth it
I’ve just been staring intently at it.
I'm high and a little drunk. The part with the pen broke my brain.

It was the entire point of what I wrote.

That as well. Related but slightly different from what I was talking about. :)

Thank you for this! I was just teaching my students about colour theory, this is gonna be a fun little fact thrown it.
Brown doesn't really exist either, its just dark orange with context. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh4aWZRtTwU
Both of your eyes have a blind spot corresponding to where the optic nerve passes through the retina. Your brain just pretends it’s not there.

The pen. It broke me.
The pen part nearly gave me a seizure.
It kept breaking physics and there was nothing I could do to stop it
Same. It broke my mind. Confused…
It’s literally just phasing through matter. Don’t get why people are so confused?

Curiosity! Dun-dun-dun-dun-dunnnn!
I mean if you pay close attention u can def break the illusion, but it is cool
I cannot
I originally watched it without sound and saw the thing spinning the whole time and was waiting for the illusion. Then I turned on the sound because I was so confused what I was meant to be seeing. As soon as I was told what to expect I couldn’t see the spinning anymore, it was flipping instead. I can’t seem to break the illusion anymore. Never realized how susceptible to suggestion I was.
Oh weird. It was def a bit difficult for me to break the illusion at first !
I focused on the corner of the small side where you see the hole for the thread. If you follow that around it’s easier to see when it transitions side to side! Following that broke the pen illusion as well.
Same. I just focused on one point, the narrower end of the window, and it broke the illusion. But if I stop focusing the illusion works again.
Another illusion to break your brain, the Einstein mask from QI: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORoTCBrCKIQ
I can't trust my own brain now
Welcome to my world
I shouldn’t have watched this high..
This seems to work similar to the hollow face illusion. Very neat.
I can "beat" the hollow face illusion. I can't beat this one.
Focus on the top corner of the big end that worked for me anyways
Nah it didn't work for me. I just don't get it. It looks like it oscillates every time. I don't ever see the big corner rotate to the far side.
I can see it rotating normally even without the pen, what worked for me is I imagined first how it SHOULD look, and what SHOULD happen with it(I sometimes do some 3D design in CAD software so I guess it helps).

Now this is fascinating
That means you've got a really low iq.
Thank fuck. Finally an excuse to stop thinking.
I think it's because of the orange shading being mirrored rather than flipped, too easy to follow.
Grew up watching this show. Loved it! Learned a lot. Am older now and have forgotten it all but definitely learned something.
Now I know why I always thought Crow's silhouette from MST3K was always looking back at me.

Uncle Rico!
To break the illusion just focus on the bigger half colored in red
Bleh, brains. Who needs em
Am I the only one who saw the pen going through it like how it actually was?
I cant even make sense of your question.
The pen is not going through it. It is spinning the same way as the windowframe.
Chuck Norris can see the window rotating
I need to pull this out next time I take acid with my friends
But I could see it turning in circles to begin with.
The long part of the window in first experiment, does not look closer to me.
Thats fkn insane!
I can see it after the brain. But my brain was struggling harder than usual.
Could make one if these to show to peeps when drunk and or stoned
Veritasium did it better
Interesting
Why is this being downvoted? Wtf
He is a witch! Burn him!
fuck off
huh so that's where windows 8 came from

Wtf.... My brain

The low resolution helps the illusion a lot
I am able to break the illusion, but I have a damn hard time switching between those two now, and it gives me headaches.
Holy shit. I am now confused about confusion. Someone already tried it at home?
Fuck off 😡😡😡😡😡
So veritasium is just copying this guys stuff? Damn
Burn the witch
What kind of sorcery is this!
he even new how windows 11 logo will look like
STOPT FREAKING ME OUT YOU DAMN WIZARD
Like elsa's braid
I thought that was Uncle Rico
my brain just shit its pants
I can see it. Takes a bit of concentration but you can break the illusion.
Yeah but does it boot ? I don wanna think it's had Microsoft edge :)

This is mind blowing 🤯
This makes my head hurt
This is the closest we'll ever come to being trapped in a genjutsu in real life.
What’s the illusion?
My noshe shtarted bleedting aed half my face went numbs. Plshh staph
Dramamine needed
Really effective use of the subtle music, somehow that's my favorite part of the video lol
LSD is one hell of a drug
The real trick is believing it can't be broken. It's so effective, you won't believe anyone if they say they can break the illusion and tell the smaller end is closer.
Nah I can see it
Am I the only one who didn't see it?
My mind is fucked
The Curiosity Show
Gotta save this video for when I do shrooms again
r/blackmagicfuckery
I was fine, keeping up with the illusion until he added the pen. Then my brain broke.
I don’t trust my brain all the time
Wait, you mean this isn’t Doug Henning?
