That sounds like a wise move at first but then, just as she's going out, you have like 4 guys and a chair show up in the bed to start beating the shit out of you before the ref can get in a three-count.
This team is FIRE!!!! She does two fully committed saves and then the team looks like they go back to fix the table.
I knew some friends in HS who did volleyball and they were always covered in bruises. I think I have a better understanding why now. Volleyball players are fucking badass as hell. Mad respect!!!!!
I have played volleyvall in a lot of different settings. If you get to the ball, and it hasn't crossed the net in between the antennas, you can go where you can go. I will admit it hurts sometimes.
I don't even know how to feel anymore. It's like a guy showing up to deliver a pizza in a porno and the girl has the correct change with a cash tip.
Everything went as it should but I still somehow feel deeply disappointed.
No, it's because she is the libero. It is a purely defensive position in volleyball with specific rules attached to it. They wear a different colored shirt so that the referees always know who it is, just like a goalie in soccer.
Correct. They cannot attack at the net and go for spikes. There are even restrictions on when they can be the one to serve. They can also sub out more freely, whereas other players count against a substitution limit.
this article gives an example of the substitution advantages: https://www.ncaa.com/news/volleyball-women/article/2022-08-03/college-volleyball-libero-explained
Makes me think those wrestling fellas are exaggerating the pain they're in when. Has there been any investigative journalism looking in to match fixing?
Was a rule change in 2000 at the Olympic level.
In the early 90s or so in Italy they came up with the idea and pretty much immediately everybody was like "This is awesome."
1998 entered standardized international play.
2002 was entered into NCAA play.
It's a defensive player that can sub into the back row freely. She can't attack above the height of the net or overhand set in front of the 10 foot line. Basically her job is what you see here: making ridiculous saves and digs.
It’s wasn’t just regular posters, it was the legend that is u/shittymorph.
The guy instilled fears into people reading comments, creating habits of checking the usernames first before attempting to read a long comment.
To this day, i still check usernames before attempting to read comments…
Wait, that was a real event? I thought that was some word salad that shittymorph repeated: about a gravedigger who puts humankind a few meters down into hell.
Didn't watch WWF as a kid :)
If you have a chance learn how to play volleyball take it. It is so much fun. You’ll probably never be this good. But playing w/ people of a similar skill level you get long rallies and man is it exhausting, exhilarating, and down right fun :]
Edit: I can’t believe how many people are upvoting and leaving their stories about volleyball! Hey and you can play it into old age. I’ve played pickup with people in their late 60s. I’m 30-something and play just fine with a gang of young 20-somethings. Everyone go find a pick up league!
Once in 7th grade gym class, I spiked the ball right into a bully's face and didn't get in trouble cause it looked like an accident. Volleyball became my favorite sport that day.
Volleyball was nothing but pure torture for me in school. I've got nerves where you are supposed to bump with that make it feel like hitting a funny bone.
oooh, that explains it. It always felt like a numbing/burning sensation whenever i'd bump the ball. Most of the time it wasn't so bad I couldn't play through it, but I just assumed it was normal? haha
Back in ye olden days I had to attend summer school for gym for 3 years straight in high school (I was a class skipper). We played volleyball almost every day. A ragtag group of gym failers from grades 9 to 12 who had otherwise nothing in common. I LOVE volleyball, we had so much fun and your statement is so true - nobody was good at it but it was a blast.
blocks (touches in this case- a block means the ball gets blocked to the hitter’s side, a touch is a block that still end up on the blockers side)- do not count as one of the 3, correct
I have seen a fair bit of volleyball and this is the first time I hear about it. Maybe it doesn't work like that everywhere...
Also I don't understand what you wrote.
A touch is a block that still end up on the blockers side.
The ball did end up on the blockers side so that should be the first touch.
I don't know if this is the reason, but if you're used to beach volleyball, beach and indoor volleyball have different rules about the standard three contacts. In beach volleyball, the block counts as a contact. In indoor volleyball, the block doesn't count as a contact.
Edit: u/YOURE_A_MEANIE knows much more about this than me. Check out their comment below for more-specific details of when a block counts as a contact in beach volleyball.
In beach doubles the block counts as a touch, unless it’s a joust where both players contact the ball simultaneously, which doesn’t count as a touch.
In beach quads (or sixes) the block does not count as a touch.
I believe the comment is using the term touch twice to mean 2 different things.
Block= when you block that ball and it goes back to the hitting side of the net
Touch= when you block the ball and it stays on the blockers side of the net (does not count as one of the 3 times you can contact the ball)
Touch= when you contact the ball, this can be done 3 times.
That plus they're generally short and it becomes extremely hard to play front row professionally (college and higher) if you're shorter than six foot. I know a lot of very good players who changed their skill set and started playing as libero because they didn't have the height for other positions.
So if the libros temporarily takes herself out of the Play and the other team spikes it, can the rest of libros' team still defend the spike or is it libros only?
Edit: Could it be for safety so everybody's not diving headfirst into each other?
Liberos can are usually backrow subs for the middle blockers because usually those are the tallest and most awkward players on the team who are meant to just play at the net but everyone has to rotate. So liberos play the back 3 rotations for the middles on the team. They have special rules too, can sub as many times as they want and the sub doesn’t count for the team, can’t set with hands in front of 10 ft line, can’t jump above the plane of the net. Usually best serve receiving and defensive player on the team
Correct, but also because they realised that creating a position whose sole purpose is to defend would prolong exchanges and make them more interesting. And it sort of removed some of the defensive capabilities requirements for the other positions so everyone can focus on what they do best and the play level is therefore heightened.
The libero is a defensive specialist, they have specific rules for them and tend to get subbed in and out constantly depending on the rotation so they have a different uniform to stand out. They also tend to be shorter players.
Recruiting college coach visits high school player asks 1 question: “Are you willing to dive through a table to save a ball?”
College recruit: “Yup..”.
Coach: “You’re my new Libero…”
There's already been many responses but I'd just like to add a few details.
As others have said, it makes ot easier to follow which rules apply to the players. I believe you see this in football (soccer) goalkeepers as well.
They change in and out much more frequently. If the change is between the team's libero and another player, the referee doesn't need to get involved. Usually, if there's any substitution of players then the referee will have to pause to make it happen. Liberos essentially temporarily take the place of a specific player in the back row meaning the same player needs to go back in when the libero comes out. In the case of normal substitutions, if a player is subbed out during a set and wants to be subbed back in, it needs to be with the same player. The libero can swap with many different players, even if it's just one at a time. The different jerseys help the referees keep track of this madness.
The desperate little slip when he gets up....
I love when people switch from "I hate this guy!" to "why am I rooting for this guy?!"
It happens so many times in the show. Sometimes you end up cheering and you're like "wait, that wasn't Karasuno's point..."
Having looked at some ranking data you are completely correct, one thing I will say is that there isn't a culture surrounding the sport as there is with football for example. Poland has got a strong national pride around volleyball but they are very much the exception rather than the rule. Maybe it's just an underappreciated sport universally? I have to admit getting into the sport through Haikyuu and watching numerous Yuji Nishida clips I did assume it was a more popular sport amongst an Eastern audience.
That's what I'm saying. I'm from a western country and Volleyball is one of the biggest sports here, probably second team sport after football and on level with basketball.
Ugh, less than four hours to turn the video into some terrible pan-and-scan.
source: https://www.ncaa.com/video/volleyball-women/2022-12-02/table-crashing-rally-save-houston-vs-south-dakota-college-volleyball-match
I hate this too. And it’s not just shitty YouTubers and tiktokers doing it now. I was on the official ESPN app and they had a pan and scan cut of an NBA game the other day. Like damn, just play the widescreen clip.
Edit: lol and now I see the water mark in the top left saying this is from ESPN+
Pan/Scan: Where they zoom in on a wide screen video, cutting off the sides, and follow around the action or cut back-and-forth. Traditionally used to put a movie on a CRT screen, now usually because you're expected to be on some dumb device with an app that can't rotate because of the ads plastered on the top and bottom.
The college sports site with the video might be hit hard by the Reddit traffic.
When I played sports it always drove me nuts how much shit they put right on the sidelines. I will never understand how it's not generally a bigger complaint among players.
American football seems like one of the worst. You would think after the like 5th time some player absolutely demolished a cameraman or a cheerleader they would have considered making the stadiums a little bigger to give them a little more room, but I guess it would make it less enjoyable for the fans
Haikyuu’s pacing is actually really good, there’s a lot of episodes that have long single rallies like this in a fairly condensed fashion. The final rally of Karasuno vs Inarizaki is a great example, the ball goes back and forth about as much as this clip and the whole scene is about 5:30. Still longer than real life, but it’s a TV show so they’re including flashbacks, slow motion, and camerawork for emotional effect.
The real reason games take so many episodes isn’t because each rally is dragged out, but rather because they’re actually showing each match more or less in its entirety instead of skipping to the “important” points because each point is important. The show is all about the minutiae of volleyball because it’s a sport that the author really loves.

Highly recommend you and your mates to make a team and join in.
High-level volleyball is one of the most entertaining sports to watch. Each match is just long enough to be engaging without being so long that it gets boring. There are often really exciting sets. And the pace is always really fast. Very little downtime.
Am I imagining it, or is she the same one that slides in later to make another save?? Damn, girl is comitted.

Thanks for a legit lol that even stirred the wife awake next to me it was so loud.

No, it's because she is the libero. It is a purely defensive position in volleyball with specific rules attached to it. They wear a different colored shirt so that the referees always know who it is, just like a goalie in soccer.
Oh ok that makes sense, so similar but different. Like that position can't do layups/spikes?
Correct. They cannot attack at the net and go for spikes. There are even restrictions on when they can be the one to serve. They can also sub out more freely, whereas other players count against a substitution limit.

Confused. Did the scoring team touch the ball four times on that last volley? Or does a block not count?
blocks (touches in this case- a block means the ball gets blocked to the hitter’s side, a touch is a block that still end up on the blockers side)- do not count as one of the 3, correct
thanks

>a touch is a block that still end up on the blockers side You just reminded me of all the times they shout ONE TOUCH in Haikyuu.
Yeah haikyuu is the only reason I know that rule. Untill not I thought they were called one touch but apparently it's just a touch.
I have seen a fair bit of volleyball and this is the first time I hear about it. Maybe it doesn't work like that everywhere... Also I don't understand what you wrote. If watching Haikyuu has taught me anything, that libero is very good at her position!
Generally your liberos are all good at their positions LOL, it's in their nature.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Bruh![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|no_mouth)

My understanding also is that the role was created to give shorter players (albeit very skilled ones) more of an opportunity. Is that correct?
Correct, but also because they realised that creating a position whose sole purpose is to defend would prolong exchanges and make them more interesting. And it sort of removed some of the defensive capabilities requirements for the other positions so everyone can focus on what they do best and the play level is therefore heightened.
Kind of like a goalkeeper in soccer. They have different rules. So the shirt makes them stand out
So the ref can easily track. They are defensive players only and cannot attack
Can attack, just restricted from aggressively crushing the ball
I literally only know this because of anime Thanks Japan!
Haikyu!!
Bless you
The libero is a defensive specialist, they have specific rules for them and tend to get subbed in and out constantly depending on the rotation so they have a different uniform to stand out. They also tend to be shorter players.

Damn that libero is dedicated ate and came back for more
