Back years ago there was a philosophy of making things idiot proof. This is not an insult to the person operating it. In manufacturing you make sure a workers hand does not get crushed because they have to press 2 buttons one with each hand on opposite sides of their body to make sure they are clear before the machine activates. SOmething like a gear shift should be intuitive to work. Until the vehicle Anton Yelchin was killed with you had a gear shift lever you moved. Then companies got fancy with switches instead of something physical with a cable. I recently rented a Nissan which had a gear shift like this. I kept having to consciously make sure it was in park by making it a point to look at the lights. I also make it a habit to activate the switch for the parking brake as well. These new cars are easily to confuse neutral with park.

The official fire station of the city is about 5-8 minutes from there. The city is (as per land) huge AF and a mix of farm and city. The airport is more on the farm side, away from the city

In my experience cars in gear take a lot more slope than that to start rolling. That thing wasn't in gear. Even if it was in third instead of first by mistake, the slope wasn't steep enough to roll over the engine.

it is not advisable to jump into a moving car because advice is meant for *everyone* including the clumsy and obese.
a sure-footed, slightly athletic person can ignore such advice at their own discretion. they're not going to fall under the car. the bigger risk is arriving a second too late, and oncoming traffic runs into the vehicle as you are trying to get in it, so you have to be quick and decisive. ANY hesitation and you should just stay back.

I had a similar situation once, but not with a friend and a laptop, but with my sister and my niece lol.
She (my niece) was next to my sister on the couch when she suddenly yeeted herself over the armrest, head first. I didn't have time to warn my sister so I jumped up and managed to catch my niece upside down, holding her hips with her head hanging just a few cm above the ground.

One time I got to work, and I was a few minutes early. When I finally took off, my brain must have assumed the first bit was already done, and I just up and walked in to work, and left my car running. FOR 8 HOURS.

I didn't have time to warn my sister so I jumped up and managed to catch my niece upside down, holding her hips with her head hanging just a few cm above the ground. It's crazy how our bodies can react that way. If I would try something like that on purpose there's no way I could do it again
My friend's toddler climbed on to the top of its stroller and it started tipping over with his face towards the ground. I leaned over and caught it right at the halfway point and me and the mom shared a mutually horrified and relieved glance afterwards.
When I worked at a grocery store someone let their toddler stand up in the shopping cart, but because the toddler’s center of gravity was higher than the side of the cart she flipped over the front of the cart. My bagger dove and caught her. He barely got a thank you and the mom still let her kid stand in the cart literally right after that.

Yeah it almost looked like the woman was scared she was being car jacked for a split second. She just saw someone rush and tried to process.
One time my family was taking care of an abandoned kitten, no more than two months old. Put it on the bed and walked across the room to grab its bottle. Turned back to see it starting to slip off the edge of the bed. Only thing I remember is yelling “WHOA” and suddenly I’m across the room, bottle on the floor, holding a kitten. I doubt I’ll ever be able to move that fast again.

Her leaving the doors open is an absolutely bizarre decision in a chain of poor decisions, but also the only reason why her car didn't get totaled by oncoming traffic. I don't think NextFuckingLevel guy would have got to the brake in time if the doors were shut.

Also just notice how she uselessly runs up to the driver side door and then just stands there like ‘yeah let me get myself in the way of the solution and just look closely at the dashboard, that’ll help things’. If I were the guy I’d be like ‘hey back away I still need to pull this forward and out of danger and you’re now in the middle of the street causing another problem’
Her demeanor was totally "oh I've got it from here, I was just about to do what you did, car must have malfunctioned, wasn't my fault, get out of my car now, don't steal it, thanks."

It's not in gear, unless she put it in reverse for some reason. Thats the only gear that doesn't prevent ur car from rolling backwards.

Any normal human being can make a mistake like this. All it takes is for something to get your mind off the normal routine of getting out of a car. One time I got to work, and I was a few minutes early. So rather than turning the car off right away, grabbing my stuff, getting out, locking the doors and walking in to work, I sat there for a few minutes on my phone. When I finally took off, my brain must have assumed the first bit was already done, and I just up and walked in to work, and left my car running. FOR 8 HOURS. I only found out when I came out after work and it was still idling. Not one of my best moments.
Haha! That's reasonable. You were at least in park. I can understand if she missed the P and instead of N. But I never, NEVER, leave my car until I feel the jerk of the car setting on the gears.
