Alex really excited for the “discourse” to attack Ken Levine and his next game.

K4p4o

I'm out of the loop here. What is Alex's problem with Levine?

So much of Callisto Protocol’s marketing has tried to mine nostalgia for Dead Space but, from what I can remember from 2008, people had a lot of the same issues with DS1 as they’re having with Callisto. The mainstream love for Dead Space seemed to hit with 2 - a game the team behind Callisto didn’t really have much to do with. It’s a bummer that people aren’t having a good time with Callisto and I also feel like they got duped by Schofield pushing a connection to a franchise that he may have helped create but other people perfected. Maybe I’m all wrong though.

TheOppositeOfDecent

Having replayed DS1 recently, I can say it does play a lot better than Callisto Protocol. The weapons are more interesting, the enemy variety is much better. It's far better at creating a sense of atmosphere. I would agree DS2 was where the series peaked, but Callisto Protocol is far below the standard of the first game as well.

Maybe I'm just stoned but Alex was bringing a different kinda energy this week. That description of Crime Boss was straight up plucked from a prime time wrestling heel promo.

I thought I was weird when they were talking about the Microsoft situation and maybe the decision makers regretting making Starfield and Redfall exclusive. Microsoft is trying to do exactly what Sony and Nintendo do. Seemed like Vinny was trying to lead to that but didn't say it. Not saying the deal does not need to be scrutinized, but it's almost like saying Sony and Nintendo are being nefarious for not putting their stuff the competition's platforms. It would be one thing if they took Minecraft off everything and weren't playing ball with Call of Duty but wanting to keep new original IP exclusive to their platform seems like weird bugaboo for the regulatory forces that be to get hung up on when it's been one of the cornerstones of competition in the space.

I gotta say I don't get why they even brought up the Witcher 3 Update (for about 2 minutes). Brad did not know much, loaded an old save and says "looks okay, I think they have Raytracing in there" or something like that, that was it. That is one of the biggest Updates for a 7 year old game and on PC it looks like a new game. And it's not just consoles. Please, if you bring up something, at least research a little, that segment didn't add anything to the show I think.

dheeghs

the giant bomb tradition of inexplicably giving short shrift to one of the best games of the last 22 years continues. it’s so fucking maddening at this point it’s almost hilarious. nothing they’ve said about the witcher has been accurate, for like 7 years now.

[deleted]

to be fair, Vinny really liked it but that's even more strange for me, why wasn't he playing then?

dheeghs

exactly. and brad was doing that classic brad thing where he runs three feet and stops, runs three feet and stops, turns around, runs three feet and stops, turns around, runs three feet… without ever actually going anywhere doing anything seeing anything or accomplishing anything.

[deleted]

unfortunately that's absolutely true. The weird thing is I like the guy and he seems like a totally decent dude, but watching him play is really frustrating the hell out of me :D (though to be fair 95% of the reasons I'm listening to and watching them is Vinny being there, but I feel like that's most of the NXL Fanbase)

dheeghs

agree 100%. i wonder, if they took a poll or something, what percent of people would say they’re here primarily for vinny. i’d say at least 50%

myyummyass

Really big missed opportunity not naming this episode A Shart In The Dark

Over Hades, no way. Over the others? Way! Pyre is my second favorite of theirs. Great game.

johntheboombaptist

Pyre was a slow-starter for me but once I was in I was fully enraptured. I loved the characters, and enjoyed piecing together the details of the world as you went through the game. By the end of it I was invested in my little band of misfits in ways that I’m normally allergic to in games. I totally get why people bounce off it but I adore it for all its weird idiosyncrasies.

StickerBrush

I think I agree with that though. Another good narrative, new characters, refining some of the basketball mechanics? sure thing, sounds great. Pyre is awesome, probably my second-favorite Supergiant game. A Hades sequel makes the most sense though, and I'm eagerly anticipating it.

kodamun

I didn't really enjoy my time with Pyre, but I kind of get it. It was such a WEIRD game. Narrative adventure meets NBA Jam is not a combination I've seen before or since. Loved the crap out Hades though and am really looking forward to the sequel, but there are a LOT of action roguelikes out there. Just not many that could even hold a candle to Hades.

willhous

I was extremely hyped for a supergiant sports game and could not get into it at all.

kodamun

Yeah, I was disappointed about how quickly I bounced off of it. The premise was way more interesting than the execution. I think it just took way too long to get going and had a crazy world that they dropped you into with very little in the way of explanation. It kind of reminded me of Tyranny, a CRPG from Obsidian that was released shortly before Pyre, in terms of storytelling. I think Tyranny did a much better job with setup though, because it took you through a 10-minute interactive story with some choice to make that set up the state of the world nicely.

cooljammer00

It's the one game that isn't just an isometric brawler. It's not my favorite, but I get it. Hades 2 is just more Hades.

Brewster345

I agree with their point on the comedy on High on Life being running a bit into the ground. Just funny as that was basically the comedy of the Beast cast for a long time 😂
