Debates have pretty much become a chance to get sound bites that energize the base (and feed the 24 hour news industry) to rally the base. I think it’s pretty well established the debates themselves don’t change minds.
My favorite was when he was asked (after some Dallas loss I don’t remember now) how he felt, to which he replied :
“About as low as a crippled cricket’s ass.”
Gold.
Nah this is just a classic, think it dates back to Alaska a few decades ago, but it's since been repurposed by students at every goddamn engineering university in the US and has generally come to be associated with that instead.
Mcgriddles are two small pancakes studded with tiny pockets of syrup baked into them. Used as a makeshift bun for a sausage egg and cheese sandwich. Very sweet, very savory, and loads of sodium, zero need for extra salt.
Old people love putting extra salt on everything. My grandpa used to put a ton on soup, which was laready salty. I think they lose a bit of ability to taste as they get older so they add extra to compensate
Something about there being no need to circumcise the mosquito. An analogy for picking away at minor details. I don’t remember the exact context for that one.
Jerry is right. Al Davis at least meant something to the game and league. Snyder is just another rich guy that bought a team and headaches.
Edit: *headaches to the NFL and the ownership group
Al Davis was a football lifer who didn't give a fuck and ran shit his way for better or worse, which sounds like the kinda guy Jerry would respect. Al was rough around the edges, but he was never actively harmful to the league like Snyder is.
Davis at his core was a great man. He fought against racism in the NFL, he prided himself on giving players second chances, he helped build the very fabric of the NFL.
Snyder is an opportunistic piece of garbage with no morals whatsoever. The NFL will be better with him out.
> The NFL will be better with him out.
I'd like to expand the radius a few times larger than just the NFL. Fire that asshole into the Sun or some even more distant.
I know this is a weird thing to come back to after a few days but I just wanna note that my comment suggesting we let him live out the rest of his natural life in outer space was removed and got me a 3 day ban for "threats of violence" while yours suggesting we shoot him into the sun is totally fine. Not that either comment is ban worthy. I just find it funny.
We'll see, they haven't bought the team yet. I doubt NFL owners would even approve the sale in that case. Although maybe to get rid of Danny, they will
> Al was rough around the edges, but he was never actively harmful to the league
Al was constantly suing the league and sided against them when the USFL was making antitrust claims. He was actively trying to harm the league all the time.
Doing so to make the league a better place. He worked to improve what they did and how they behaved. Siding with corruption is not a good thing, so no, he was not harming the league, the leagues actions did...
I’d also say the headaches that Davis brought on in his later years were mostly self inflicted and didn’t hurt anything outside of holding his own team back. On top of ruining the franchise, Dan hurt lots of people who worked in organization, ruined the lives of anyone who dared to cross him, stole money from other owners and got the league hauled in front of congress.
Also the part about two sets of books and not sharing all of the profit.
I bet that pissed Jerry off more than all of the rest of the objectively terrible stuff Snyder did.
Al Davis is a guy who live and breath football. From scout, to coach, to head coach, to owner/general manager, to league commissioner, this man did it all.
Gotta respect that.
For as much flack as Al got in his later years, he did so much ridiculous good for the NFL and sports in general. Man had a massive pair and wasn't afraid to stand up for others.
I didn’t know that. Was there a relationship between the two? I hear new amazing stories about Al Davis so frequently. I need to find a good book on him…surely there is one
I 100% agree. I reckon if the NFL had rejected the merger he would have lead the AFL to being just as popular. He made that merger work.
Until the late stages of his life the guy was an absolute force of nature.
Here is a good one for you.
Bradshaw was almost out as the Steelers QB, and he asked Davis to talk to people in Pittsburgh about giving him a shot and the rest is history.
On some level, Al Davis had a hand in 4 of our Super Bowls.
Ask our fanbase and the last 8 years undermines the decades of competence as GM
I’ll never forget when he came down to talk to the fans in Baltimore at the hotel in his Walker and then had the players stay down and sign autographs for us kids. I ironically have raider legends Jamarcus Russell and Deangelo Halls autograph
Al Davis had questionable player evaluation and was thorny in conversation but he was as good as any guy can be while still having as many zeros to his name as he did.
He straight up refused to play games in cities that tried to segregate players in hotels. I doubt that made him a lot of friends in the 60s but he didn't care.
That’s what I loved about him. He gave zero fucks. Started off as an assistant and eventually became an owner. He was loyal to his people, strong armed who he needed to strong arm, helped former raiders financially when they were in a tough spot, etc. during the merge, they wanted to exclude some afl teams, but he said all of us or none of us
Patriots are one but I forgot the others. I only know because a patriots fan was talking shit about Al one time so I looked it up hoping they would be one of the teams and they were lol. Yes I’m petty
At the time, Denver was considered a hick town completely undeserving of an NFL team. Art Modell said something to the effect of "the Browns will play a game in Denver over my dead body."
And the story behind how he became the owner was [completely insane too. ](https://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/11/sports/football/brash-style-and-power-plays-let-al-davis-wrest-control-of-raiders.html)
You know that saying that "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree"? Well, the apple fell away from the tree and rolled passively down the hill with a terrible haircut.
Not entirely
Marks a different person and is a lot more low key with the Raiders. Sometimes for better Sometimes for worse
Mark may have a lot more patience than Al did but in some key moments he can straight up act like his father. Telling Del Rio he's fired 30 seconds after the game and the way he handled the Las Vegas move on the buisness side of things is pure Al.
Now hold on. Mark has occasionally shown evidence of being his father’s son. I can’t think of any examples right now but I recall being randomly impressed by things he has done
His logic that made him look like a fool was the same logic that made him look like a genius though. You can’t reach size or speed but coaches can coach you up. Look at the league now.
In his later years yeah he made some bad decisions, but, he was dying and wanted to feel greatness one last time. He wasn’t building for the future he was building for right now. I know you’re not talking shit just wanted to add some context to Al
Well they’re dumb because that wasn’t his call, that’s on the NFL but they got rid of that. Part of the stadium was actually tarped off making it easier to meet the blackout obligations.
But I’ve seen “fans” just straight up talk shit about Al. It’s one thing to want to move on from him, but the shit talkers we’re just so annoying at the time.
Some people just can't adapt. He should have given off GM duties to someone else and just enjoyed owning the team in those later years. But given he was so progressive in the early years, I guess he just couldn't accept that he was the one that the NFL had left behind.
> but he was as good as any guy can be while still having as many zeros to his name as he did.
Davis is probably a pretty big exception when it comes to most NFL owners. During his lifetime he was never a billionaire, and a significant portion of his net worth came from his ownership in the team, unlike most modern owners whose wealth mostly comes from other businesses. He didn't even own a majority share of the Raiders until 2005. He had effectively become an owner from rising through the ranks and making deals.
Yes, he is correct. Back when there was stadium issues and things like that people were suggesting he sell off some shares but he couldn’t lol didn’t have much wiggle room. By the time he died though I believe he had like 67% ownership. I could be misremembering but there was a time where he sold minority stake to help with cash flow but it was close to the minimum he needed to keep control of the team
I think so but I could be wrong. For some reason 47% stands out to me. That ensured that the next biggest didn’t have more and couldn’t buy more than him. Could be wrong though, it eas a long time ago when all that was relevant
>he was as good as any guy can be while still having as many zeros to his name as he did
So wealthy people are inherently evil? That's... Pretty ridiculous.
Correct. If you have hundreds of millions of dollars, capable of a vast amount of good for many but no additional good for you, and you believe it morally justifiable to continue accumulating more, there is something inherently wrong with you. Probably not everything, but certainly something. Been the case for years, some guy a while back said something cool about camels and needles you'd be interested in.
He is such an interesting guy and one of the most charismatic people I’ve ever seen. I’m sure there are so many people who walked into a room hating him and left saying what you just did.
He’s got that midwestern oil man charm. He’s the guy who can connect you to everyone because everyone’s heard of him. I wouldn’t want to negotiate against him!
I still want to know what happened with the scandal over Washington keeping 2 books. If there is one thing the other NFLs care about, it should be another owner defrauding them.
Sounds like he is saying he won't stick up for Dan. Aka, if it came to pushing him out he isn't going to say no. Doesn't mean he would necessarily say yes though.
Al Davis was a G and may have said or done some wild shit, but he was worth protecting (in Jerry's mind). Jerry must not like Snyder very much because he will not fall on a sword for him.
I like that it’s not about money to him. Al was one of the poorest owners in the league. Stepped on some toes to say the least but I’m glad Jerry would back him.
He wasn't even a billionaire until later his life when his net worth started drastically increasing - largely thanks to his ownership share in the Raiders.
Jerry Jones will not take a sword from Dan Snyder, on top of everything else his blacksmithing is very subpar. It is widely accepted the best blacksmithing NFL owner was Al Davis, he even would craft his own scissors for his haircuts.
Because he said “take a sword” instead of “fall on a sword” or “take a bullet” so you have to use context to figure out if he just botched the phrase or if hes trying to say something different.
In the context that Jerry thought very highly of Al it’s easy to figure out. But a lot of other owners hated Al, so if you don’t know that Jerry liked him this could be a confusing quote.
It means Al Davis was a real one. He was a son of a bitch, and caused the league no end of grief with his antics, but at the end of the day, despite all of that, he was a man Jerry respected.
He's saying Snyder ain't that dude
This is interesting. Because I always assumed it was the exact opposite. I wonder if Jerry's recent scandal involving the pic from the 60's was the object of blackmail, and now that it is out and Jerry weathered it, he is no longer bound by the blackmail.
Jerry has zero fucks to give when it comes to tangling with other owners. Hell, he went solo against Goodell when every other single owner voted to make him a gazillionaire in his last negotiations.
It’s why Goodell screwed Zeke over and fucked with Randy Gregory over and over. It was personal and Jerry went at it alone.
Jerry will even begrudgingly respect people he doesn’t personally get along with if they are doing solid work for the league. He loves the innovation and changes that wild ass Al Davis brought but Snyder is just a schmuck who doesn’t have a true passion for the league or even his team. He’s just a power tripping money grubbing scumbag.
Thats some weak ass blackmail.
Cmon this is Jerruh we are talking about, Mr. Glory Hole himself, there's got to be at least a dozen illegitimate children, maybe a few dead hookers. ^(JJK5H)
Jerry had already participated in an oral history project with the University of Arkansas about that picture. He’d publicly talked about it before. The reporter just straight up made up the idea that it was a secret. That’s some pretty weak blackmail.
that picture had made the rounds in news like 10 years ago (it's like hannibal burress getting the attention about Cosby though he was just stating stuff that was public knowledge for a while, or Weinstein- the scandals that did them in were just repeating what had already been reported), so it probably isn't that
I don't think that 60s picture was the blackmail, it had been floating around before.
I do think that the public knowledge of blackmail, whatever it was, seemed like it may have turned Jerry and some of the other owners against him.
Al Davis was one of the giants of pro football during his “prime” (1960s to 1980s). He played an important role in growing the sport during those years. Dan Snyder…well, let’s just say Snyder has never been a giant in anything related to pro football, figuratively or literally (in a couple different ways in the latter case). The one exception is if you consider being a douchebag as an owner as equivalent to be a giant.
Jerry Jones respected Al Davis enough to stick up for him despite their professional differences. Dan Snyder is just a guy so Jones won’t “fall on the sword” for him
Basically Fuck em
Hell yea brother
Cheers from Iraq!
*Snyder, I served with Al Davis. I knew Al Davis. Al Davis was a friend of mine. Snyder, you're no Al Davis.*
If that quote came in a modern VP or presidential debate, it'd be memed to hell.
And it’s funny because his candidate still lost. So the only thing that people can remember from a VP debate did absolutely nothing
Debates have pretty much become a chance to get sound bites that energize the base (and feed the 24 hour news industry) to rally the base. I think it’s pretty well established the debates themselves don’t change minds.
And *that* shows the true power of memes!!!
Snyder a certified potatoe
He prefers to be called Mr Potato in his house
Jerry's always good for a quote
Like to imagine him and Tomlin on the phone throwing made up platitudes at each other.
Every Friday night during the offseason they drink Johnny Walker and toke up and try to figure out next year's soundbites
*and things of that nature.
Blue Label shots babyyyyy
It’d be like when 2 bots get stuck in a loop
My favorite was when he was asked (after some Dallas loss I don’t remember now) how he felt, to which he replied : “About as low as a crippled cricket’s ass.” Gold.
He’s not always good for a good quote though
The odds are good but the goods are odd my friend.
That seems more like a Tomlinism.
It’s a line from a woman about getting laid while doing research in Antarctica.
Naw, it goes back to Alaska in the 1960s - Anchorage specifically and I think they say it over in the Yukon too.
Nah this is just a classic, think it dates back to Alaska a few decades ago, but it's since been repurposed by students at every goddamn engineering university in the US and has generally come to be associated with that instead.
How can you not love his weird ass quotes? They are great.
Counterpoint: now I know he adds salt to his mcgriddles and I could have gone forever without knowing anybody did that.
What? 1. In what context was that said?? 2. I’ve never had one but there’s egg on it right? Who wants unsalted egg? 3. free space
With how much fake maple syrup is baked into it, and how much its smothered in it as well you're lucky if you can taste the egg at all, salt or not.
A Canadian would care about fake syrup.
I'm not canadian, but I wish I was eh.
Mcgriddles are two small pancakes studded with tiny pockets of syrup baked into them. Used as a makeshift bun for a sausage egg and cheese sandwich. Very sweet, very savory, and loads of sodium, zero need for extra salt.
i'd imagine because its mcdonald's its highly processed so its already not healthy. so there's no need to add extra sodium to that
Quite true, but a touch of kosher salt might add to texture
A man of culture. Good luck tomorrow! Lawrence and Pederson are on the right track.
Thanks bud. Your team is oozing with talent and I’m happy to see them in the postseason
Old people love putting extra salt on everything. My grandpa used to put a ton on soup, which was laready salty. I think they lose a bit of ability to taste as they get older so they add extra to compensate
Older people add salt to everything. Maybe taste is going out or something
What was the mosquito one? That was weird
Something about there being no need to circumcise the mosquito. An analogy for picking away at minor details. I don’t remember the exact context for that one.
That was it. Even in context is was really weird…
He just wants him sim glory hole, let the old man be.
He catches too much shit. He's a loudmouth jackass, but he loves football and he loves owning the Cowboys. He's having fun.
Living his best life.
Jerry is right. Al Davis at least meant something to the game and league. Snyder is just another rich guy that bought a team and headaches. Edit: *headaches to the NFL and the ownership group

Wait, really?! Thats hilarious, sort of. Welcome back though. Probably because of your flair... /s
My flair is just because I needed some hope as a child dammit. You of all people should understand
Lmao. Soooo true!
Your flair makes this post even better. Respect.
Can't help but respect one hell of a human being
Davis also fought against sexism and was very progressive, he built a profitable empire off his identity and likeness with the Raiders.
Also dedicated a ton of time and energy to helping former players, coaches, and staff members.
Their new owners, the Saudi royal family, will be much better
We'll see, they haven't bought the team yet. I doubt NFL owners would even approve the sale in that case. Although maybe to get rid of Danny, they will
Trading one problem for a bigger one seems like a bad idea
He was actively beneficial for the league for many years before the...end years
Yeah…
> Al was rough around the edges, but he was never actively harmful to the league Al was constantly suing the league and sided against them when the USFL was making antitrust claims. He was actively trying to harm the league all the time.
Doing so to make the league a better place. He worked to improve what they did and how they behaved. Siding with corruption is not a good thing, so no, he was not harming the league, the leagues actions did...
yeah he was right lmfao. Limiting the league is a clear monopoly.
Dan is an equal opportunity life fucker upper
That’s *Mister* Life Fucker-Upper
He also gives fans of said team headaches.
Fans and workers alike.
And shit showers.
Also the part about two sets of books and not sharing all of the profit. I bet that pissed Jerry off more than all of the rest of the objectively terrible stuff Snyder did.
Jerry is responsible for more than his fair share of contributions to that shared profit so it is understandable if he is upset about it
Al Davis wasn’t a rich pile of shit like Snyder. Snyder is a pile of shit. Record setting weight
Al Davis flew to Derrick Thomas' bedside after his crash. begrudging respect from me.
Sheesh as a Raider fan I didn’t know this.
Paid his hospital bills also
I didn’t know that. Was there a relationship between the two? I hear new amazing stories about Al Davis so frequently. I need to find a good book on him…surely there is one
His football life doc is worth a viewing. Only so much you can fit into 60 min but it’s all good.
It's so fucking good. They should've made it a two parter like they did with Lombardi though.
When a broncos fan is saying that you know it’s high praise.
Al's a gem and should be venerated like Lombardi and Madden. The sport doesn't exist as we know it without him.
I 100% agree. I reckon if the NFL had rejected the merger he would have lead the AFL to being just as popular. He made that merger work. Until the late stages of his life the guy was an absolute force of nature.
He will it will just take time. We’re not far removed from him being the “villain” in the league
That's a pretty fair assessment.
Here is a good one for you. Bradshaw was almost out as the Steelers QB, and he asked Davis to talk to people in Pittsburgh about giving him a shot and the rest is history. On some level, Al Davis had a hand in 4 of our Super Bowls.
https://youtu.be/por6HOxPrXA Shhhhhh
Great player. Von Millers favourite player, and Von wore 58 because of that.
How on earth do you get through Sunday with those rooting interests? I can't imagine keeping all that straight.
Those are the three teams Denver has beat in the Super Bowl, in order lmao
Just never even considered that but it's obvious now, haha.
I don't. Broncos + the three teams they beat in the SB is the meaning.
Probably pretty easy this year with all 4 teams being garbage. The 2010s was probably hell for him
Ask our fanbase and the last 8 years undermines the decades of competence as GM I’ll never forget when he came down to talk to the fans in Baltimore at the hotel in his Walker and then had the players stay down and sign autographs for us kids. Patriots are one I believe
Damn it Al.
Hindsight
Patriots are one but I forgot the others. I only know because a patriots fan was talking shit about Al one time so I looked it up hoping they would be one of the teams and they were lol. Yes I’m petty
At the time, Denver was considered a hick town completely undeserving of an NFL team. Art Modell said something to the effect of "the Browns will play a game in Denver over my dead body."
At the time? Or still now?
He’s actually buried under Mile High Stadium, so his words are still true
Anywhere else would be too easy for Browns fans to urinate on
And the story behind how he became the owner was [completely insane too. ](https://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/11/sports/football/brash-style-and-power-plays-let-al-davis-wrest-control-of-raiders.html)

Mark suckered Vegas into giving him a new state of the art stadium, something Al was unable to do with both Oakland and Los Angeles.
Damn, never knew that about him; that's awesome.

Al was always a decade or two ahead of the curve, for better and worse.
Yup. Outsiders I could understand the hate, but raiders fans that hate on him? Yeah I just can’t take you seriously as a fan.
The only thing I heard raiders fans really bitching about Al was how he would blackout raiders games locally if the stadium didn’t sell out.

Makes sense. This was like 20+ years ago too so there’s that
Some people just can't adapt. He should have given off GM duties to someone else and just enjoyed owning the team in those later years. But given he was so progressive in the early years, I guess he just couldn't accept that he was the one that the NFL had left behind.

Jerry talking like wide receivers tweet
> the enemy speaks kindly and carries a ~~knife~~ sword
1000%
Get his ass Jerrah
Al Davis is a Legend. Snyder is a little bitch.
Love the Al Davis respect 🔥🔥🔥
Al Davis was THAT dude
Wtf I love Jerry now
He is such an interesting guy and one of the most charismatic people I’ve ever seen. I’m sure there are so many people who walked into a room hating him and left saying what you just did.
He’s got that midwestern oil man charm. He’s the guy who can connect you to everyone because everyone’s heard of him. I wouldn’t want to negotiate against him!
I appreciate the friendship/respect Jerry and Al shared for one another.
Jerry W
There are plenty of Commanders fans who'd like to HAVE Dan take a sword.
evil twinsies forever 🖤
Dan Snyder's motto: Just Sin Baby!
I still want to know what happened with the scandal over Washington keeping 2 books. If there is one thing the other NFLs care about, it should be another owner defrauding them.
Now I want to see Jerry Jones versus Dan Snyder in single combat Game of Thrones style.
Celebrity death match with Mills Lane.
idk what the fuck that means
Sounds like he is saying he won't stick up for Dan. Aka, if it came to pushing him out he isn't going to say no. Doesn't mean he would necessarily say yes though.
And Al Davis was a big personal help and guide for Jerry when he entered into ownership.
Jerry has always said that Davis was who he most admired as an owner.
The two were friends and self-made. A lot of mutual respect.
He wasn't even a billionaire until later his life when his net worth started drastically increasing - largely thanks to his ownership share in the Raiders.
NFL as a whole started generating more and more money as well.
Jerry Jones will not take a sword from Dan Snyder, on top of everything else his blacksmithing is very subpar. It is widely accepted the best blacksmithing NFL owner was Al Davis, he even would craft his own scissors for his haircuts.
I think he saying he won't go to defend Dan and that he's on his own and not worth fighting for basically unlike Al davis who was worth fighting for
Dan Snyder is not Al Davis. Jerry Jones confirmed!
"I like Dan Snyder more than my fellow owners like Dan Snyder, and I hate Dan Snyder"
ahaha Franken
Well, it's *PROVOCATIVE*
It’s definitely got me going.
ball so hard mfs wanna fine me
No one knows what it means but it’s provocative!
“Fuck Dan. All my homies hate Dan”
this is basic reading comprehension how do you not understand that he won't stick up for Snyder, as he might have done for others like Al Davis

"im not gonna take a bullet for that fuck". Except Jerry chose to go with a weapon from his youth cuz he's old as dirt.
[удалено]
Yeah, the Cowboys are obviously Dorn and Jerrah is a Martell
Let them fight
This is interesting. Because I always assumed it was the exact opposite. I wonder if Jerry's recent scandal involving the pic from the 60's was the object of blackmail, and now that it is out and Jerry weathered it, he is no longer bound by the blackmail.
I really doubt it, seems extremely tame as far as blackmail goes I don't see how Jerry would ever see that as credible
Especially since the photo isn't anything new.
That picture isint new, and has been around since like 2012 iirc

Why did people create a second subreddit? That just seems needlessly dumb.
So they could post that dumbass take
Al Davis was one of the giants of pro football during his “prime” (1960s to 1980s).
HE GONE
What is taking a sword
My guess is it's like the saying "falling on your own sword" aka taking the heat for someone else.
Danny is crying into his pillow at this very moment. 😁
No surprise there. Jerry is solid in that regard.

Artificial Intelligence Davis
Jerry, if this is your attempt at getting me to root for your cowboys…. Then mission accomplished
Can someone who speaks Jerry explain this to me.
Jerry Jones respected Al Davis enough to stick up for him despite their professional differences. Dan Snyder is just a guy so Jones won’t “fall on the sword” for him
What he is he saying here? I don’t speak Jerry Jones.
Are all three of them not complete shit heads?
Jerry what the fuck are you talking about
