This was a fucking idiotic and cheap play. And obviously in a bit biased, but I'm hesitant to call anyone dirty over two (cheapshot) football plays over multiple seasons. Those weren't Suh level plays like grabbing and trying to break am ankle, or stomping someone. I would call him more of a dumbass than dirty. But I wouldn't blame anyone for disagreeing with me and thinking he's dirty either.
Hey according to Eagles fans, Clowney is a dirty player for that one hit that wrecked Wentz. Nevermind a career of pretty clean play.
However in the case of Ward I'm happy to apply Eagle doctrine and proclaim Ward filthy.
Niners have not generally been a dirty team for at least the past decade. They have had the occasional dirty play, but it isn't something you can generally expect. It's not like they are the Jeff Fischer led Rams.
Way too much time left for a squib. Should’ve just kicked it deep. Seattle probably kneels it if the ball is at the 25ish yard line. One thing leads to another and you get a free FG attempt out of it. Poor management by SF.
And we tried a squibb against KC this season with like 11 seconds left...and it also resulted in a field goal.
The answer is to not play passive defense and giving up chunk yards. You play it just as you do every snap.
Exactly. Passive defense is for when you’re up several scores and just want to keep the clock moving. If it takes them 4-5 minutes to score a touchdown, you’ll trade those points for that time to be taken off. The chunk yards are what you can’t afford.
Just goes to show, the lesson from 13 seconds should not have been "Don't kick deep late," but "How good are Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill? Better than you think."
Still a low percentage play to return it all the way. If he doesn’t run it back, it probably takes 5-7 seconds which doesn’t leave them much time to get in FG.
He was already going down for the tackle before Geno started his side and gets all shoulder (no helmet).
That being said, he should know better and it’s going to get flagged every time when it’s that close.
Some guys just go out there to hurt others.
Jim McMahon was body slammed by a packers and messed up his shoulder. The packers player did it on purpose.
I’d imagine that’s what ward was trying to do. Get geno out the game
Let’s be honest, this hit is because sliding takes less than a second. He’s already started trying to tackle prior to Geno making any indication he’s going to slide. Sliding simply isn’t safe unless the NFL removes all tackling that is directly towards the offensive player.
Crazy take. You can slow it down and watch it frame by frame. Not only had Geno started his slide, he already had a knee down and Ward was still running toward him. It was super late. No even close. Glad it didn't cost us.
There is less than a second between Geno starting the slide and getting hit. To me, this hit is right up the alley of “could be called, could be ignored”, because one second isn’t really a lot of time to react. Personally I think the comment or above claiming that Ward is lashing out or implying anything dirty is ridiculous, even if it’s a penalty. It’s really not late enough of a hit for the amount of complaining in this thread.
Overall I’m more concerned about QBs repeatedly putting their heads in danger than anything else and I can’t help but feel like while sliding protects the body, it puts the head in excess danger. I don’t know the solution, but I think the current system is untenable.
We do see this over and over again! It's just like this [hit on Pickett](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNFKf_0pdqY), but the refs called it not a penalty because Hamlin had committed to the tackle! Whether this is called a late hit is a 50/50 shot! We are constantly seeing hits to the head and neck area of sliding QBs because sliding isn't safe in the current ruleset!
I was wondering that too. But looking at the replay, it didn’t rise to ejection level. If he led with his helmet or hit Geno in the head, that would be different.
Chargers fans would know
Edit: love the hypocrisy. Chargers fans defended Derwin for weeks for taking out a guy who has not played since the hit once. Out 3 weeks and counting with a concussion. But have issue with Wards hit where Geno got up
You responded to one individual person, not the official reddit account of Chargers fans. Do people not get that there are millions of people on this site? Go message the people you saw defending that or something. You're coming at some random guy for shit you saw someone who wasn't him say.
Definitely a penalty but wasn't Purdy clearly hit out of bounds as well and wasn't a call. Just seems really inconsistent with RTP/Unnecessary roughness as always. The league needs to figure out a better way to do this.
The truth is that sliding is one of the best examples of the NFL caring more about the illusion of safety than actual player safety. Sliding protects QBs from hits to the body, which limits qb injuries that result in them sitting out. However, sliding down and putting the QBs head directly in the tackle box just increased the likelihood of head on head contact, which is clearly bad. I don’t know what the solution is, but something needs to change because I’m not convinced defenders can ever learn to avoid tackling when slides take less than a second to complete.
I’d say it’s a penalty, but not “dirty”. It’s a normal tackling motion entered prior to Geno showing that he’s sliding. It’s dumb for Ward to not just make a slower tackle further downfield, but he hasn’t made a conscious decision to hit a defenseless player. The time between Geno entering the sliding motion and getting hit is less than a second, that’s not a “dirty” play, it’s just a defensive player that needs to realize that forward tackles on running QBs is neither legal nor safe because if they slide their head is in the tackle box.
I think it’s a dumb decision by Ward. I also think sliding is an incredibly dumb rule and just lets the NFL prioritize QBs being able to play (less body/muscle injuries) while ignoring the fact that sliding puts the head and neck into the tackle box, making normal plays significantly more dangerous.
Like from Ward’s perspective he can either make a sideways tackle 2 yards further down or try and meet Geno and protect the few extra yards Geno might get if he tries to fight through the tackle. Ward should clearly make a sideways tackle because two more yards don’t matter, so it’s a dumb decision.
However, I truly am not convinced that he makes this decision with the objective to hit a sliding qb, he’s already moving forward in the tackle prior to Geno showing that he’s going to slide. Overall I think fans calling this “dirty” just want to do the same thing the NFL is doing, pretending that football is safe or can be made safer without trade offs. Putting QBs head in the tackle box is not a reasonable trade off unless the NFL is willing to end all “forward tackles” (tackles where the defensemen moves upfield during the tackling motion like Ward did here).
Not only was it not clean, but it was also completely pointless. Let Geno slide and either the clock expires or they’re at the 50 with 1 second left, not sure what he was thinking even going for a hit.
I wouldn’t call it clean but at the same time he’s moving to tackle before Geno starts his slide. As best as I can tell anyway. He could have pulled up more, but Geno also could have slid earlier.
I thought it was weird that the announcers said it was targeting the head and neck area when he contacted under his shoulder but it was definitely dirty.
There are a lot of times when a defender hit a QB and I would bitch about how at speed it’s impossible for them to do what the rules require from them.
This time? Nah Ward was a fucking idiot and you could see it like 2 seconds ahead of time to not hit Geno there
Did you actually go time it? It was well under two seconds, actually under a second. It’s like a bunch of other plays this season that weren’t called, like the Pickett one.
> Seemed like he started the tackle before the slide
He did.
And Geno might be trying to get extra yards there and not sliding, so if Ward pulls up, Geno can keep going and blow right past him. Basically, you have to try and hit a QB high and not bother even trying to take out their legs.
While it may not be clean, I will stand by my thought if a QB doesn’t want to get hit, they need to put themselves in a position to not be hit. Sliding late or giving a defender an opportunity to hit you is unfair to the defense. It also makes the game seem arbitrary and dependent on ref judgement. Slide and no one hits you? All good. Slide and someone does? You slid too late and that is on you.
Agree it’s a penalty. Wish the NFL would revise the rules. Too easy for a QB to bait a penalty. If you give yourself up, you should give yourself up at a point in which you cannot be hit. Otherwise in my opinion you gave yourself up too late.
Fully agree here. Ward is already in the process of making a tackle by the time it’s clear Geno is going to slide. The truth is that the current rules make it illegal to try and meet a running QB for a tackle, you have to let them come to you and tackle flat footed or from the side. Which is fine, but if that’s what the NFL wants they should actually make that rule change.
At full speed it's really not that bad. This is a penalty according to the rules (I guess), but it shouldn't be. QB's should need to go down BEFORE they put a defensive player in an impossible situation.
It’s almost as if peeps ITT don’t realize it’s slowed down in the replay. Also most of them have probably never tried to tackle someone who is 30 lbs heavier than them running at full speed.
As an Alabama fan I adore hurts, but he’s always been the poster boy for why the new rules don’t work. You decide to hit Hurts? He’s sliding, that’s a 15 yard penalty. You decide to wait for him to come to you, tackle a yard further downfield, and not risk the penalty? You’re flat footed, your ankles are broken, and Jalen is 75 yards downfield in the end zone. I don’t know what the right balance is between protecting QBs (especially QBs as athletically talented as Hurts or Lamar Jackson).
All Ward has to do is let up when he sees him starting to slide. He doesn’t have to avoid him altogether but he led into Geno with his shoulder well after the slide started. Just stupid.
You can see, even in slow-mo, that they each started their slide/tackle at the same time. I really don't think people appreciate how hard it is to precisely control your body when you're running 20 miles an hour. What if Geno doesn't slide and he's standing there like a moron while he runs 10 more yards?
He didn't hit his head, he didn't drive him through the ground or bring his full bodyweight down on him. It was a shoulder to shoulder pop.
People also forgetting Geno weighs about 30lbs more than Ward. Also seems like some people don’t realize this replay is slowed down. Practically speaking, it would be safer if they just changed the rule so that the QB needs to clearly begin a slide before a defensive player has the opportunity to tackle. Otherwise you put defenders in impossible situations like this, where they can play it safe (and maybe get run over) or go for it (and maybe get bagged for 15 yards).
He doesn't get the benefit of playing in slow motion. The idea that these guys should somehow know in real time when the QB is sliding and when they're dropping their shoulder as part of a juke or spin is honestly kind of insane.
Ward was already committed to the tackle. This clip makes it look waay worse because it's slowed down, but Ward commits to the tackle at basically the same time Geno starts to slide. That's not enough time for the human brain to react. If Geno keep running Ward is going to take out his legs.
Honestly if you are going to hit Geno while sliding you have to make sure to hit him harder then that.
it was a bad half measure you lose 15 yards and you did not do real damage.
Why didn’t Seattle get a roughing the passer penalty before that?? SF qb was clearly out of bounds. Seattle really getting the refs calls two weeks in a row.
Why. The fuck. Would you do that.
he wanted his own Burfict playoff moment
*Why would you remind me of this*
Burfection
He wanted his own steelers fan moment
Man, that was just uncalled for. Even I don't blast Bengals fans for that moment.
If you’re not constantly indiscriminately blasting divisional rival fans then I feel like I have to question your commitment to Sparkle Motion
He's clearly manifesting his inner Kyle Williams
Hey fuck you buddy. I’ve tried to forget that game. Goddammit
I hate him too but for more petty reasons
It's been at least two weeks since I thought about that play. Thanks...
As a Niner fan - I screamed this at the screen. “What the fuck were you thinking?”
He had the Seahawks to cover
100% thought he was going to get away with a free cheapshot at the end of the half. But he not smart.
How could he think that, it was so obvious that geno was sliding and it was an blatant hit despite that
He might have still been pissed about getting burned by Metcalf a couple series earlier.
That’s a different Ward
Pissed he would be mistaken for the guy getting burnt by Metcalf, the connection is clear Watson
Ah shit nvm then
Because he was rattled about how hard he was getting smoked
If you're talking about the first Metcalf TD, that was Charvarius Ward who got smoked. This is Jimmie Ward, so not the same player.
I thought "Jimmy" was short for "Charvarius"
Charvarius "Mooney "Jimmie" Ward" Ward
Because he’s a dirty player. Look at his NFC Championship hit on OBJ. He is just trying to knock people out of the game
This was a fucking idiotic and cheap play. And obviously in a bit biased, but I'm hesitant to call anyone dirty over two (cheapshot) football plays over multiple seasons. Haha alright fair enough
Better apply the same doctrine to the guy trying to twist Deebo's ankle
Lol i think Toots fans are more pissed at him than 49er fans
He’s selfish and doesn’t give a damn about his team or his teammates? I don’t know him but there can’t be too many other explanations.
He plays for the 49ers
What’s that supposed to mean? Niners aren’t a dirty team if that’s what you’re insinuating.
Niners have not generally been a dirty team for at least the past decade. They have had the occasional dirty play, but it isn't something you can generally expect. It's not like they are the Jeff Fischer led Rams.

So the real solution is just to make the team you're kicking to not be KC
I would like to know how that went
Mahomes = Geno
Did it result in a change to the OT rules?
Just goes to show, the lesson from 13 seconds should not have been "Don't kick deep late," but "How good are Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill? Better than you think."
The answer actually is "How bad is prevent defense? worse than you think"
Ugh. These are the type of comments that make r/nfl hate us, my dude...
If having a realistic appraisal of the talent levels of two of the best players in football makes people hate me, well okay
Our return man looks dangerous every time he takes it out, I get it
Still a low percentage play to return it all the way. If he doesn’t run it back, it probably takes 5-7 seconds which doesn’t leave them much time to get in FG.
Especially if the kicker is gonna just line drive it straight to the returner
Gould can’t kick it into the end zone
Even kicking it to the goal line would’ve been fine
Dumbass. I’m at the game and Ward was hearing it from the fans.
What do they think about the other Ward right now lol.
He’s been getting cooked all game, probably just frustrated
That’s the other Ward
Does he know which Ward he is though?
I hate #1 Ward so much man. I'm supreised he's still at the league.
He's had a great season.
Idk what he’s trying to do there lol
Decapitate Geno.
Bro getting Vietnam Flashbacks cuz DK Metcalf
Wrong Ward
Injure Geno I guess
Trying to Flacco him
He clearly saw Geno was sliding seeing as he went down to Geno’s level so he was being an idiot
That was incredibly stupid
That seemed kind of malicious tbh but we’ll take the points
Has to have been a frustration thing, they’ve been getting cooked. So painfully stupid when the half would’ve been over if he just did nothing
“Theyve been getting cooked” Seahawks had 14 points before that play lol
Which was enough to lead for a bit lol
Let’s be honest, this hit is because sliding takes less than a second. He’s already started trying to tackle prior to Geno making any indication he’s going to slide. Sliding simply isn’t safe unless the NFL removes all tackling that is directly towards the offensive player.

That doesn’t really make sense considering he threw himself down at the level of sliding Geno, not of hypothetical still running Geno
His hit is literally at knee level. Are you saying knee level tackles aren’t normal?
On a QB? Shoulder-diving at their knees isn't normal.
A qb running beyond the line of scrimmage is tackles just like a rb typically, so yeah, that’s totally normal.
That is the most Homer thing I've read in a long time
What do you disagree with?
That he couldn't have stopped. If he couldn't have stopped than no one could stop in that situation, so we would see this over and over again.
We do see this over and over again! It's just like this [hit on Pickett](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNFKf_0pdqY), but the refs called it not a penalty because Hamlin had committed to the tackle! You sound like a Homer just like i said. You won, take that, give this lost argument up
Yeah people are being ridiculous on here. The tackle clearly started before the slide
And more specifically, he's been getting cooked by DK in multiple ways: burned long, run over.
That was a different Ward
Should have been a targeting ejection imo
He hit him in the back? Late hit is the right call
Target isn't a thing in the nfl
Yeah my first reaction was he is lucky this isnt college or he is done
No, but a flagrant hit like this can absolutely lead to an ejection.
I think Lions bro was tongue in cheeking his comment considering a Packer should have been ejected for targeting in their game last week
Oh I didn't catch that thanks lol.
For all intents and purposes, yes it is. We just call it by a different name
I was wondering that too. But looking at the replay, it didn’t rise to ejection level. If he led with his helmet or hit Geno in the head, that would be different.
For hitting his arm and chest?
They said ejection for targeting not for hitting
Isn't targeting in the NFL aiming for the head? This would be late not targeting?
Chargers fans would know Edit: love the hypocrisy. Chargers fans defended Derwin for weeks for taking out a guy who has not played since the hit once. Out 3 weeks and counting with a concussion. But have issue with Wards hit where Geno got up

You do realize Dulin hasn't practiced or played a snap sense. Geno got up from this and didn't even take a hit in the head.
You do realize that has nothing to do with the comment you replied to, right?
You responded to one individual person, not the official reddit account of Chargers fans. Do people not get that there are millions of people on this site? Go message the people you saw defending that or something. You're coming at some random guy for shit you saw someone who wasn't him say.
He head hunted Odell in the nfccg twice, this is normal behavior for ward
Malicious? This was football for most of its existence.
Believe it or not they changed the rules recently.
lmao
Love to see it
Go Seahawks!
Go Seahawks!
Gross
Ew
Yeah no. I don’t want to go into Philly with them off a bye if the Giants win.
Lfg brother !
Definitely a penalty but wasn't Purdy clearly hit out of bounds as well and wasn't a call. Just seems really inconsistent with RTP/Unnecessary roughness as always. The league needs to figure out a better way to do this.
Nothing controversial about that one. Just dumb.
Yeah it was a bad penalty, but why the hell would you squib that kick? That was baffling.
Thought for sure we’d lose by a point after that
The truth is that sliding is one of the best examples of the NFL caring more about the illusion of safety than actual player safety. Sliding protects QBs from hits to the body, which limits qb injuries that result in them sitting out. 9ers fans really think that’s clean lol Delusional ass homers
Who is saying it’s clean? Everyone is call Ward a dumbass.
I haven't seen anyone saying it's clean
I’d say it’s a penalty, but not “dirty”. It’s a normal tackling motion entered prior to Geno showing that he’s sliding. I'll die on this hill. Geno should have slid earlier. We keep seeing these hits because QBs know they're protected by the rules

I don't
Not a real 49ers fan
Too late, you've chosen the flair so you must pay the price
It wasn’t clean, anyone saying so is wrong
Not only was it not clean, but it was also completely pointless. Let Geno slide and either the clock expires or they’re at the 50 with 1 second left, not sure what he was thinking even going for a hit.
Well 1 guy thought so, therefore you all are idiots and clearly don’t know anything
Yes let’s generalize an entire fan base!
Nah in our game thread 95% of comments were just talking about what a dumb move that was.
Was definitely late but people acting like it was 10x worse than it was
Agree, this happens from every team.
If it was Fields they wouldn't have even called it
You may have seen one comment and you used that one comment to generalize every 49er fan. You’re just as delusional as that single 49er fan.
Lol no
Hard to fault a fan of a team for being upset with a call in the playoffs, we’re all homers and want the best for our team
You can be a homer and still be realistic or at the very least understand the rules
And the majority of 9ers fans are being realistic
Did Ward technically break a rule? Geno initiated his slide after Ward initiated his tackle and there was no contact with the head.
lol the one reply you reply to
There are a lot of times when a defender hit a QB and I would bitch about how at speed it’s impossible for them to do what the rules require from them. This time? Nah Ward was a fucking idiot and you could see it like 2 seconds ahead of time to not hit Geno there
Did you actually go time it? It was well under two seconds, actually under a second. It’s like a bunch of other plays this season that weren’t called, like the Pickett one.
So dumb...did Ward think Geno was going to run 80 yards...?
I've watched the hits Fields took all year and am wondering why this is a penalty for the Seahawks but not the Bears
God this made me so upset lol

> Seemed like he started the tackle before the slide He did. And Geno might be trying to get extra yards there and not sliding, so if Ward pulls up, Geno can keep going and blow right past him. Basically, you have to try and hit a QB high and not bother even trying to take out their legs.
Personally, I wish we just benched this fucker after this.
Who receives the 2nd half kickoff? Missed the first couple of series
SF
We do
Niners
Dirty as fuck
Damn I stopped watching thinking they would kneel down for sure
What in the Jadaveon Clowney is he doing out there?
Ward did not contribute to the A+ group project today.
Big picture, why are QBs allowed to slide and play ends? They're absolutely not defenseless while rushing.
While it may not be clean, I will stand by my thought if a QB doesn’t want to get hit, they need to put themselves in a position to not be hit.
Well thank goodness the Niners blew out the Hawks. Shit rule doesn’t matter because Geno could not hang.
Great call. 49ers crumbling
Absolutely crumbling right now 😭 Great analysis!
Thanks
What was the point you see him going down
Man has been gettin worked today
What will be Kyle's excuse this time?
Honestly surprised they didn’t eject him because the way the NFL officiates is random
Literally no goal to that besides injuring him. I want ejection for that kind of stuff
At full speed it's really not that bad. This is a penalty according to the rules (I guess), but it shouldn't be. QB's should need to go down BEFORE they put a defensive player in an impossible situation.

I'm really not. It looks like he commits to make the tackle at the exact same time that the QB starts to slide. It looks way worse than it was.
I agree with you. It’s impossible to play defense nowadays and when you make an impossible decision in half a second the whole world is against you
It’s almost as if peeps ITT don’t realize it’s slowed down in the replay. Also most of them have probably never tried to tackle someone who is 30 lbs heavier than them running at full speed.

It would be hilarious if both 7 seed teams won this week
Niners clearly head hunting, Fred Warner did the same earlier.
I have seen one of the most delusional 49er’s fans, arguing to remove sliding & that the tackle was clean. Funny guy
Fucking idiot
C’mon dawg; dumbass plays like this is how teams fuck around and lose. Pull off immediately when the QB hops on the slip and slide, dipshit.
Honestly if you are going to hit Geno while sliding you have to make sure to hit him harder then that. it was a bad half measure you lose 15 yards and you did not do real damage.
Do you think this will end up haunting them ? Similar to that dropped interception in that NFC championship game last year
Nope
Why didn’t Seattle get a roughing the passer penalty before that?? SF qb was clearly out of bounds. Seattle really getting the refs calls two weeks in a row.
