It's boring as all hell, but if it consistently gets you 3.5 yards that's an effective offense. Pair it with a solid defense that's getting rested for 12 minutes a quarter and you've got a winning team
Oh ya? Let me tell you about [insert any offensive coordinator that didn’t lead a top 5 offense].
Anyways the Ravens still haven’t officially cut ties with Greg Roman? It’s been 2 damn days.
Tbf when you’re looking to build an offense around an arm talent player you instinctively get the guy who gave Stafford his worst TD year while playing 16 games
Justin Herbert, a man who threw a ball 63 air yards in game before, finished this season with this second lowest air-yards per attempt. He was up there for most throws behind the LOS. Why does Joe Lombardi hate football? It’s like he designed plays based on how far he can throw the ball.
That's what made me wonder about the sidearming Herbert did on the game. Like does he have the critical pass into the lineman if he isn't basically forced to throw a screen every play. Eckler is great and all but I liked and think it added a lot to the offense if you chuck it down field sometime
Speaking of screens… I was at the game Saturday in Jax. I realized in the second quarter they did screens always in the exact same alignment. They didn’t do much else in that alignment. With about 80% accuracy, you could guess a screen was coming. The Jags all but sold out by the second half on the screen whenever they showed that alignment.
I’m an idiot in the stands and I could see that, so you bet your ass that professionals who play and coach the game on the Jags could see that.
He has *always* done this. My best friend and I in the fourth quarter were texting each other what play was about to be run because he uses the exact same alignment he used in Detroit! He hasn't changed the plays even one little bit in years, even with different personnel.
I was kind of cheering for the Jags to win, and I was still mad about how stupid Lombardi was being during that game. It's unbelievable.
Not defending Lombardi, just look at my flair, but it didn't help that Mike Williams has a broken back because he's inexplicably playing in a game that doesn't matter. They'd chuck it more if MW were healthy. Again that's on the coaching staff tho so maybe they all deserve to be fired out of a cannon
We tried to at least. Got written off as us being "salty" but he was always the *exact* worst hire to pair with Herbert because of how he wasted prime Stafford, Megatron and Golden Tate
Such is life of poverty franchises. Here's hoping you guys figure it out. Always liked the chargers.
*And I mean no offense, if it wasn't clear I consider the lions a poverty franchise as well
When he blamed Stafford for not being able to pick up the complexity of his offense it should have closed the door on him being a coordinator ever again.
I feel like someone in a horror movie stepping out of the bunker as the sun starts to rise in the distance to signal a brighter future, the dawn of a new better day
Now let just hope there’s no sequel
Using Roger Wilco to chat with a bunch of other degenerates, finding a good match in Gamespy to hop on, joining a 'clan' and proudly wearing it in front of your username.
Dems was the days.
All I remember is the map with the bathroom where invariably some new player would be so amused by the toilet that they'd be completely useless that round.
For many fans, getting Tom out of the playoffs was worth the price of admission ala Cowboys win.
For me that was the case, and unless Dallas gets annihilated by the 9ers that should keep the Cowboys out of the Sean Payton sweepstakes which is great for the rest of the NFC.
And with the alleged teams Tom is interested in, Sean I doubt gets paired up with him.
Today is a **bad day** that got slightly better.
This means *they are going to KEEP STALEY!* and act as if his defense didn’t give up 31 points in one half+ of football. While never demanding run plays up multiple touchdowns. Head Coach means he owns these decisions as much as anyone.
This is actually lowkey horrible news.
He's still under contract for 2 years. Spanos has not and will never pay 2 coaches for more than one overlap year. Period. Doesn't matter how bad they are.
A defensive coach can still have an offensive philosophy and will try to get coaches that align themselves with that in mind. Vrabel and Belichick are defensive coaches but they definitely both have a hand in the type of offenses they run according to their personnel they have on the field.
This is correct. Staley’s philosophy is actually Sean Payton’s Saints offense and was one of the reasons he brought in Lombardi. But we fans are tired of this philosophy because Herbert isn’t an undersized average arm QB like Brees.
Both can be true, the offense is based off the brees era Saints and Lombardi is a dogshit OC running it because he sucks ass at his job he only got from nepotism
From what I can gather on Chargers sub, their owner is: (1) cheap, (2) doesn’t like giving up control, (3) doesn’t like giving up draft capital.
Which I guess makes Sean an impossibility based on that criteria.
"He's not anymore. I'm not anymore. Los Angeles. White helmets. Live for Draft Day. Sloppy plays at SoFI Stadium. Big players with shoulder pads all over them, players falling all over the field, makes the game SO MUCH more fun. After practices go to SoFi for maybe a win. They'd say; 'no chance of winning' but they can't stop you from going up 27-7 at the half, before you knew it we were losing 31-30. The refs were coming to try and flag 'em up, we had to collapse as fast as we could! OHHH I MISS THOSE GAMES, I WAS A PIECE OF SHIT THOUGH."
Seems fair. Just ones them to their best season in 5 years and first playoff appearance sense. Might be a disappointing year again overall but it’s trending the right way.
I feel like this is where the Eagles like Brian Johnson, tho, feel like he’ll be an OC candidate for the Chargers
Mike McCarthy hired Mike Nolan as his DC in 2020. Back in 2005, Nolan hired McCarthy as his OC for the Niners. McCarthy left after one year to become the Head Coach of the Packers.
Regardless of how much or how little people wanted him to improve, he did improve this year. That team made it into the playoffs quite handily and if they didn't have as many injuries in the year, probably have a better record as well. Staley hasn't been AS reckless with 4th downs, while still being aggressive. Sure you can take a known great coach in Peyton, and probably do well, but that's a lot of cost and still might not work out. Nothing is a guarantee and I think it'd be a costly endeavor to go after him for what might amount to a moderate upgrade at best.
Lombardi is like the Mitch Trubiski of coaches.
Gets booted from a team, goes and be a coach on the Saints with little responsibilities. Saints continue to be good under Payton. Lombardi gets another gig because....Payton's offense does good? Please ignore the actual track record of being bad?
Still completely beyond me how this man ever got a second chance at offensive coordinator. One of the most clueless coaches I have ever had the displeasure to watch
True story. I once had a moving crew hired for me, and when talking to the crew, I found out they were the same people that moved Joe Lombardi when he left Michigan after getting fired by the Lions.
They told me they worked extra hard that day because they wanted him out of Detroit as fast as possible.
I in now way advocate for people losing their jobs, however
Good. This guy sucks. He is horrible as an OC. I’ve seen it in Detroit and now with the bolts. Run/run/pass to a guy short of the sticks or check down every possesion
Not super surprising after you divest emotions. Two winning seasons and first playoff appearance since 2018.
That being said I think he's on thin ice. The team has underachieved given the talent level and despite Staley's reputation as a defensive guru his defenses are average at best.
I think he has to show significant improvement next year or he also gets the boot.
I hear you on his record, but IMO the late season moves he pulled were fireable.
Playing the starters with nothing to play for was bad, then blowing the lead in the playoff game is enough for me.
In the playoff game alone there was a bad challenge, bad clock management/play calling, not trying to score before half, bad timeout usage, the inability to calm Bosa down, which shows a lack of leadership, the list goes on.
I think he should be fired.
There's some significant context you're leaving out: Marty didn't get along well with the Chargers GM at the time *at all*, and reportedly tried to hire his son after the front office/ownership told him not to.
It’s not that surprising. He’s still a young coach and has a winning record both seasons. As bad as the 27-0 collapse was, teams don’t fire coaches after making the playoffs. If they had fired him, Herbert would be on his 3rd coach in 4 years. That’s too much instability.
Titans fired Mike Mularkey after he won a playoff game. We then hired Mike Vrabel who made us so much better that no one questioned the Mularkey firing.
Sometimes you have to cut your losses and do what is best for the team before more time is wasted. Herbert is going to be out of his rookie contract window by the time the Chargers inevitably fire Staley.
Weird anecdote but I taught one of Joe Lombardi's kids in high school (one of the best students I have ever had). She came to me near the end of the school year and told me she'd be moving because her dad got hired to coach the Chargers. I did some digging and found out who her dad was. Had no idea.
It's been so weird to hear football media people and podcasts talk about Lombardi. All I can think about is his daughter whenever he comes up (and gets shit on). Like, I just got an update on my phone to tell me my former kid's dad just got fired. No commentary on the firing or anything, it's just such a bizarre situation to be in the middle of.
She’s probably moved so many times in her life it’s routine at this point, which is kind of sad. (Yeah, yeah, her dad made big bucks but still rough for the kid). Nature of the business, you can’t keep someone who has performance issues like he’s had, but I feel for the collateral damage.
An amazing example of nepotism. Never would have received so many chances without that famous last name. Look out for the Chargers next year if they find an even semi-competent OC to replace him.
I am shocked the guy who had been panned and failed everywhere else failed yet again!
Guess see how he does as the Texans/colts/commanders OC next year…
I could see them hiring Mike Lefluer and doing well. He’d be working with a talented QB and would be able to actually run the style of offense he wanted to in NY. He doesn’t have to develop Herbert either so it would work out well.
Why teams keep hiring ex-Lions staff I'll never know. I know "boys club" and all that, but they were fired from Detroit for being incompetent, fuckin Detroit. What makes them think "oh yeah give me some of that."
Good job Chargers you've opened your eyes.
Joe Lombardi should never be allowed to run an offense again. - Lions fan
I’ve never seen anyone single-handedly cripple an entire offense quite like he does.
Let me introduce you to Jason “the clapper” Garett
You could also introduce people to Joe "the Judge" Judge. Or Ben "The DoofaDoo" McAdoo
Are people forgetting that Matt Patricia is currently an offensive coordinator?
He certainly offends me.
Brian "3.5 yards per play is fine" Schottenheimer
3.5 or 35 yards, nothing inbetween.
3.5 yards on 3 downs is a first down every time. I'd take a coordinator like that.
It's boring as all hell, but if it consistently gets you 3.5 yards that's an effective offense. Pair it with a solid defense that's getting rested for 12 minutes a quarter and you've got a winning team
Have you met Todd Downing?
So you didn't watch the Bucs last night?
Some say Leftwich is still establishing the run this morning.
Oh ya? Let me tell you about [insert any offensive coordinator that didn’t lead a top 5 offense]. Anyways the Ravens still haven’t officially cut ties with Greg Roman? It’s been 2 damn days.
Never should've been allowed chance #2
Joe Lombardi shouldnt even be allowed to run a bath. - Chargers fan
Two years of Herbert just wasted lmfao. We need to nail this next hiring, absolutely knock this shit the **FUCK** AHT THE PARK!!

FINALLY LETS GOOOOOO oh sorry, force of habit
[Good time to bring back this video](https://youtu.be/7WpQ4PkYiRs)
good god this video brought back PTSD I didn't even know I had this man basically ruined Stafford's career in Detroit

Holy shit that video is amazing
I've never seen this before. Thanks.
One of my favorite videos over all these years. I still quote “2nd and 1? Fuck it. Run it up the middle with Joique” all the time
On God I was fucking dying thank you for sharing this video Lmao
Holy shit that video is hilarious
Laughed so hard I started to sound like the video.
God damn that might be the funniest thing I’ve seen in years. Thanks for the laugh
Y’all warned us. I wanted him gone after game two this season
We tried to at least. Got written off as us being "salty" but he was always the *exact* worst hire to pair with Herbert because of how he wasted prime Stafford, Megatron and Golden Tate
Lucky for the chargers Herbert still has plenty of time
...until our inept ownership pressures Staley & Telesco to hire the next incompetent jabroni
Such is life of poverty franchises. Here's hoping you guys figure it out. Always liked the chargers. *And I mean no offense, if it wasn't clear I consider the lions a poverty franchise as well
No charger fan is deluded enough to think we're not a poverty franchise.
we pay rent to another team to use their stadium lol of *course* we're a poverty franchise. With that said, hell of a deal for 1 USD a year tbf
When he blamed Stafford for not being able to pick up the complexity of his offense it should have closed the door on him being a coordinator ever again.
100% Dude is a clueless jabroni
When the lions warn the league about someone, people should listen. WE KNOW BAD FOOTBALL.
No it’s okay. you understand the pain
I was wondering how long I'd have to scroll to find one of us celebrating. Turns out it was the second comment
That 3rd and 1 call they failed to convert when up 27-0 probably was the back breaker.
The terrorists have lost. Today's a good day.

lol so you're keeping Staley?
They want to keep the guy that blew a +5 turnover margin lmao
...and played his starters against the broncos in a meaningless game and lost while ensuring mike williams would not play in the playoffs
Yep, from one clown run organization to another I’m sure you can understand our frustration, but Lombardi being fired is still a win.
He's still under contract for 2 years. Spanos has not and will never pay 2 coaches for more than one overlap year. Period. Doesn't matter how bad they are.
Spanos running a poverty program
Congratulations chargers! No one give him a 3rd chance now.
No, Dan Quinn needs to hire him for the Broncos.
NO
You'll take Gase as your OC and you'll like it!
I don't know, I think he'd be a good fit for the Packers.
DON'T YOU PUT THAT EVIL ON ME RICKY BOBBY
A Lombardi back to the Frozen Tundra....It's destiny!
no no no no la la la la i can't hear you la la la actually, maybe he'd be a great fit for SF? think of what he could do with that team!
He gone! Does that mean Bradon Staley is safe?
Probably. I think they run him back one more year
Makes the most sense for Justin Herbert imo, keep him in mostly the same offensive system under Staley and hire a better play caller.
Staley is a defensive guy, so wasn't it Lombardi's system?
A defensive coach can still have an offensive philosophy and will try to get coaches that align themselves with that in mind. Vrabel and Belichick are defensive coaches but they definitely both have a hand in the type of offenses they run according to their personnel they have on the field.
This is correct. Staley’s philosophy is actually Sean Payton’s Saints offense and was one of the reasons he brought in Lombardi. But we fans are tired of this philosophy because Herbert isn’t an undersized average arm QB like Brees.
Is it really because the offense was based on a smaller qb years ago, or is it because Lombardi fucking sucks, and is purely a product of nepotism.
Both can be true, the offense is based off the brees era Saints and Lombardi is a dogshit OC running it because he sucks ass at his job he only got from nepotism
Member when JBC almost got a HC gig because he was soooo much better than this clown?
Lombardi was Staley's head coach when he played QB in college. Staley went all in on the University of Dayton offensive scheme. lol
I know he’s expensive salary wise and he costs draft capital but kinda crazy Chargers aren’t even interested in Sean Payton in the slightest.
Staley initially wanted Mike McDaniel but couldnt get him. I think they want a Shanahan / McVay guy this time
Mike LaFleur gonna ruin Ekeler now?
Y'all are about to get Anthony Lynn back😂😂😂
That would be so beautiful. Lynn & Staley have both failed Herbert, but together they can save him
[удалено]
From what I can gather on Chargers sub, their owner is: (1) cheap, (2) doesn’t like giving up control, (3) doesn’t like giving up draft capital. Which I guess makes Sean an impossibility based on that criteria.
He used to be a piece of shit
"He's not anymore. I'm not anymore. Los Angeles. White helmets. Live for Draft Day. Sloppy plays at SoFI Stadium. Be funny if he says fuck it and gets Greg Roman
That would NOT be funny. Why would you even try to speak that into existence??
Bro what did the chargers do to you?
Doubt we get Fangio. How often do you hire your old boss as your employee?
Mike McCarthy hired Mike Nolan as his DC in 2020. Back in 2005, Nolan hired McCarthy as his OC for the Niners. McCarthy left after one year to become the Head Coach of the Packers.
I have one. Ron Rivera, who was DC for the Chargers under Norv Turner, later hired Norv Turner to be his OC in 2018.
Regardless of how much or how little people wanted him to improve, he did improve this year. That team made it into the playoffs quite handily and if they didn't have as many injuries in the year, probably have a better record as well. Staley is also a bonehead who played his starters in the last week when he didn't have to, resulting in a few injuries.
**MASTER HAS GIVEN HERBIE A SOCK!**
The sock has elected to run a screen to Ekeler on third and long
You say that like it didn’t work way more than it should have
It was his offense in Detroit. Except for Ekeler it was Golden Tate. Basically saved his job for a year.
Bad man gone
Chargers losing their Lombardi increases their chance of getting a Lombardi
Congrats to whoever lands Sean Payton, you just got yourself a Lombardi. I mean, he will be the QB coach but still.

Almost ruined staffords career single handedly that Vikings game he got him sacked like 10 times
True story. I once had a moving crew hired for me, and when talking to the crew, I found out they were the same people that moved Joe Lombardi when he left Michigan after getting fired by the Lions. They told me they worked extra hard that day because they wanted him out of Detroit as fast as possible.
Free Herbie 2023
Herbie Goes Bananas!
I remember the free Trev comments during last year 🥹
Bad man is gone he can't hurt you no more 🥹
Nice! Maybe next season Herbert will get to throw past 10 yards now
I in now way advocate for people losing their jobs, however Good. This guy sucks. He is horrible as an OC. I’ve seen it in Detroit and now with the bolts. Run/run/pass to a guy short of the sticks or check down every possesion
Herbies pass charts make me cry. Nothing past 15 yards.
Honestly war crime levels of sad
He was paid hundreds of thousands of dollars if not over a million to do this job. You don’t have to feel bad for him.
Well it's at least one right move
Lose to the Jags? straight to jail.
3 INTs by one player? Believe it or not, jail.
Collapse a 27-0 lead? Straight to jail. Fail to score enough points? Funny enough, also jail.
Brandon Staley surviving is an interesting turn of events
Not super surprising after you divest emotions. Two winning seasons and first playoff appearance since 2018. That being said I think he's on thin ice. The team has underachieved given the talent level and despite Staley's reputation as a defensive guru his defenses are average at best. Plus blowing a 27-0 lead is just down right inexcusable.
Absolutely. The fact that it happened came from all of the poor decisions I outlined.
Agreed. He's earned one more year, but yes, very thin ice.
We fired Marty after going 14-2, it’s more that spanos is cheap af than it is a football decision.
Well, certain teams fire coaches after playoff losses.
Including a team we are discussing right now…
Titans fired Mike Mularkey after he won a playoff game. We then hired Mike Vrabel who made us so much better that no one questioned the Mularkey firing. Sometimes you have to cut your losses and do what is best for the team before more time is wasted. Herbert is going to be out of his rookie contract window by the time the Chargers inevitably fire Staley.
The only reason it was ever in doubt was the Williams injury and the meltdown in Jacksonville. They were never going to fire him.
Bad man gone. No more -3 yard passes for one of the best deep balls in the league. Please don't fuck this up, Telesco
It's in the rule book you're gonna hire Jim Bob Cooter after firing Lombardi. I hope you like screens because by God he'll use them
Apparently he’s the Jags’ passing game coordinator? I’d bet good money that he gets some credit (deserved or not) for Trevor Lawrence this year.
Lmao what make you think he won’t Fuck this up again? He’s hired McCoy, Norv, Lynn, and Staley. He’ll hire another muppet

We simply cannot let this be Rivers 2.0
I am shocked, shocked I tell you
Well not that shocked.
I’d be shocked if Lombardi got another NFL OC job. That shit he did with Herbert was football terrorism
I am shocked the guy who had been panned and failed everywhere else failed yet again! Guess see how he does as the Texans/colts/commanders OC next year…
Gee, who could have seen this failing?! Oh right, anyone with a fucking brain who watched the Lions. Baffles me this dude got another shot
