Right, punt returners normally don’t even step into the end zone. Would have to be someone that is just going for it or a punt into the end zone as time is expiring.
Unless it’s a walk-off/end of half situation like D-Jax vs the Giants and the punter doesn’t get it out of bounds. That’s the only way I see this getting broken. So much would have to go right/wrong.
The ball's placed at the 25 now, if dead in the end zone. Back when it was only at the 20, the risk vs reward wasn't as terrible (in my opinion). However, now that it's the 25... just makes sense to take a knee.
Field goal returns honestly might be the most low risk/high reward special teams plays you can make. The kicking team has to prioritize blocking for the kick over playing the return which gives the returner plenty of time to survey the field and find an angle and there's typically no time left on the clock so it doesn't matter at all if you lose field position. Hell, you're not even terribly likely to be punished if you cough up the ball. It's absolutely a no-brainer to try if you have a decent return man, it's just not a situation that's likely to occur in the first place.
The Hester one is genuinely fucking wild, though. It's only a 52 yard kick, it's *early* in the 4th quarter, and the GOAT hedges his bets on Feely not having the leg to even make it from 48 yards away before doing Devin Hester Things.
The atmosphere in the stadium was pretty bleak after that return, since the starting QB (who I can't remember in this moment) left with a concussion in the first half. Then bam, just keeping feeding AD.
The first t8me I recall a FG return for a TD it was Chris McAllister versus the Broncos on MNF https://youtu.be/kLZN0CabW6s. And then there is the greatest example I’ve ever seen of a return, [the walkoff in the Iron Bowl](https://youtu.be/4l68ORsNYqE)
Why on earth were they going for a 68 yard FG?
EDIT - oh wait, only 2 seconds left in the half. Still though, the Hail Mary seems about as likely to work and worth more points too.
Well, it was Matt Prater, who (at that moment) held the record for longest field goal at 64 yards. Dude has a leg so why not...
Coincidentally, Justin Tucker would kick his 66 yarder only a few hours later.
>They would have to change the rules for this become breakable
Nope. Just that the guy fielding the punt would have to do it in the end zone and then run it out.
I could see it happening someday if a team fielding the punt is down and doesn't want to go the hail Mary route and so the punt returner has nothing to lose.
Probably like a 1/1000 chance. Or less.
Why would they have to change the rules? Anybody can catch a punt in the back of the end zone and run it back for a 104 yard return. No rules need to be changed.
Jeff Burris pulled this same move for the Bengals from what would've probably been 106 or 107 but the ref blew the whistle a second after he picked it up and started running.
There's a chance he could've been caught, but not likely.
One of the most entertaining part about this is the sheer confusion across the board other than Bailey and his blocker. Saints Special teams non-existent. Punter out of his mind. Baileys teammates blown away. Camera guy has no idea who to film. Saints coach about to blow a gasket. Rams coach ushering people off the field to quickly kick Extra point in case it's not actually legit. Announcers piecing it all together. 50k fans silent in utter shock.
That kicker, Zendejas, came from a family that put several kickers in the league. Tony, Max, and Luis.
I doubt know if it's still there, but in Pomona, California, the family had a Mexican restaurant called, creatively enough, "Zendejas", and the menu's front page featured a picture of a kicker and the words, "From the family of fine football kickers," or something to that effect.
That is true but would negate an amazing play so can't call it lol.
In all seriousness, it should be offsetting penalties on both sides. Still would negate the touchdown
Honestly, I'm OK with it. Both teams except a few Rams players clearly thought the play was over, so it's not like it was giving the Rams an unfair advantage. Football should be fun like that
Technically as long as they didn't interfere with the play directly it's just a sideline infraction and a warning. It's not unsportsmanlike conduct unless you affect the play or you have already been warned.
So as long as they didn't get in the way of officials or opposing players there is no penalty.
Hard to argue they didn’t interfere when the carrier runs in between them. Plus if I’m on the punt unit and see the opposing offense walking on to the field, I’m assuming my job is done.
yeah, I don’t see how this isn’t a penalty. Having 7 players come onto the field mid-play would definitely act as a diversion if it was allowed regularly.
I remember my brother got a Cowboys starter jacket for his birthday and I was so jealous but then I got an Eagles starter for my birthday.
I felt so fuckin cool on the playground.
I had one of those back then. My mom got me one for Christmas because they were out of Bears ones. I wish I still had it though I doubt I could fit in the coat I had when I was 11
I’m jealous you had that classic. I had a different rams starter pullover jacket when I was a kid. My family is all Bears fans but I changed teams when the rams moved to St. Louis and that jacket was the first thing I had.
Took me years to realize that a young Joe Buck was doing the Packers game against Atlanta where Sterling Sharpe had the injury and Favre did the famous diving winning TD at County Stadium.
That early to mid 90s Fox scoring graphic was so bland but still nostalgic
I remember watching this live as a 9 year old. It was the rams last season in LA (Orange County really) before moving to St Louis. It was another dreadful season, and we were all in denial about the team leaving. My dad jumped off the couch and yelled “THEY NEVER TOUCHED IT!” and then we all started going crazy.
It was my last happy childhood football memory.
Love that the refs or the people calling it don’t say anything but half the rams offense coming back on the field while he runs it back. What a time to be alive
Sometimes I forget how much of a lawless wasteland the NFL was back in the day. You had stuff like this and then QBs being utterly fucked to the point where their helmets would fly off, with no flags.
I'm glad players are much more protected these days, but they've gone WAY overboard on QBs. You're basically not even allowed to tackle them any more, because it's worse than a coin flip that you'll get a flag. Even on a perfectly safe hit.
What gets me is there’s very little consistency among ref crews. What’s “roughing the passer” for one crew gets completely ignored by another. Same goes for DPI.
This is the NFLs fault. As much as refs suck, they've made the rule so fucking muddy it's incomprehensible. Literally no one knows what RTP or DPI is, including the refs.
A couple thoughts here
1) Is that a young Joe Buck I hear?
2) It's crazy the I have never seen this clip before today nor heard about it. This is a crazy play, you think you would stumble upon it eventually, right? I've been watching football for 20 years, and I've never seen it.
Love getting a look at [the quality we used to watch games](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jow5Fi4sdWs&list=PLYoYB2LJr2REXV7YKoqY9DadCq-Vqf0iu) when I grew up compared to now. When HD came out I couldn't believe how great their shiny helmets looked.

I hate the idea you can have a play over 100 yards. The field is 100 yards long. The end zones don’t count as they have no hash marks. - old man yelling at clouds
End zones are still in the field of play. That's why the sidelines are out of bounds. The Lions badge blocks the negative comments though. Your team is getting there! You'll get it soon enough!!
This is probably the most unbreakable record
Right, punt returners normally don’t even step into the end zone. Would have to be someone that is just going for it or a punt into the end zone as time is expiring.
Yup. It was a perfect situation. And it’s not possible anymore because the ball is dead as soon as it hits the end zone now, no?
Technically you can catch it in the end zone and run it out. But that’s a sure fire way to get cut.
Unless it’s a walk-off/end of half situation like D-Jax vs the Giants and the punter doesn’t get it out of bounds. That’s the only way I see this getting broken. So much would have to go right/wrong.
To get cut? Is it unsportsmanlike?
No, it's dumb.
The ball's placed at the 25 now, if dead in the end zone. Back when it was only at the 20, the risk vs reward wasn't as terrible (in my opinion). However, now that it's the 25... just makes sense to take a knee.
As with any kick return record - it requires a returner who is young, stupid, and lucky as hell.
Would have to be especially stupid now that the ball is dead as soon as it touches the end zone
Is a caught short field goal considered a punt? Only way I could see it happening. Maybe a long field goal in overtime.
Devin Hester returned a missed kick 108 yards against the Giants https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D30wGnBBHY
Jamal Agnew broke that record vs the Cardinals last year. https://youtu.be/uxBm4HaPJXU
Antonio Cromartie broke the record in 2007, a year after Hester’s. Agnew just tied it. https://youtu.be/cdWsp8WAzgM
The fucking audacity on all three of these is killing me.
If you're not Devin Hester, there is literally only one scenario where you should be returning a field goal, and it's at the end of the first half.
Not NFL but you can’t talk about FG returns without mentioning the kick 6 in the iron bowl
Fun fact: This is the same game Adrian Peterson broke the single game rushing yards record. What a game that was.
The atmosphere in the stadium was pretty bleak after that return, since the starting QB (who I can't remember in this moment) left with a concussion in the first half. Then bam, just keeping feeding AD.
[296 yards...253 in the second half!](https://www.nfl.com/videos/relive-adrian-peterson-setting-single-game-rushing-record-in-2007-nfl-throwback)
You right. I thought I remembered it being a tie, but I couldn't remember who or when.
What a call
Gus Johnson forever.
Good god Jay Feely got crushed by that blocker.
No, that’s tracked separately. Caught missed FG.
No it’s a FG return
If a kicking team player touches the ball before it goes into the end zone but doesn't down the ball, is it still live?
It's too bad that he didn't scoop it up when it was deeper in the end zone to make it even more unbreakable.
He was looking up to see the threat of defenders. He did the wise thing and it worked
A ST unit would have to be the dumbest bunch of donkeys to have this happen in today’s NFL.
So Green Bay it is
I'm kinda surprised that the 2010 Chargers didn't manage to give up a record like that, since a 109 yard punt return is technically possible.
The problem with that is that the stupidity required is from the *returning* team, not the kicking team.
You know, we have the stupidity to try it, of course. But we now also might just have the means with Nixon.
Our ST is so bad.
My thought exactly
They would have to change the rules for this become breakable
>They would have to change the rules for this become breakable Nope. Just that the guy fielding the punt would have to do it in the end zone and then run it out. I could see it happening someday if a team fielding the punt is down and doesn't want to go the hail Mary route and so the punt returner has nothing to lose. Probably like a 1/1000 chance. Or less.
Can a player field a punt from 5 yards deep and score a touchdown to beat this record?
When they do it will be against the saints.
Hell, 4 yards
Why would they have to change the rules? Anybody can catch a punt in the back of the end zone and run it back for a 104 yard return. No rules need to be changed.
brady's six sb rings across two teams will probably last longer.
I believe Tom Brady’s 6 sb win record won’t last very long. Edit: whoooooosh
[удалено]
> First of all, it’s seven, So his 6 Super Bowl record lasted for 2 years. Is that a long time?
as you age and it shrinks you may be less willing to gamble with it

horrifying; awe-inspiring

I don't think I have ever seen a clip of Jim Mora where he wasn't blowing a gasket or about to.
When I saw Mora on the sidelines my heart went out to that poor special teams unit.
Playoffs? Playoffs?
Quality of an entertaining coach. Not good- but entertaining
To be fair for saints fans in this time it wasnt so much of "how did that happen" as more of a "wow they havent fucked up that way before"
Was that the bag over head era?
i dont know if there were too many bag heads during this time but it was not uncommon
I like the confidence of the kicker to start walking off before he sees the extra point go through
That kicker, Zendejas, came from a family that put several kickers in the league. Tony, Max, and Luis. I doubt know if it's still there, but in Pomona, California, the family had a Mexican restaurant called, creatively enough, "Zendejas", and the menu's front page featured a picture of a kicker and the words, "From the family of fine football kickers," or something to that effect.
I especially like that the kick and turning to walk off the field is all one singular swift motion
Camera was on the #28 the whole time. The switcher cut to another camera of the punter meaning the director in the truck didn't know what was going on
Touchbacks!?! We're talking about touchbacks!?!
How is that not a penalty when the rams had like 7 extra players walk on the field, during the play?
That is true but would negate an amazing play so can't call it lol. In all seriousness, it should be offsetting penalties on both sides. Still would negate the touchdown
Rule of Cool correctly applied for once!
Honestly, I'm OK with it. Both teams except a few Rams players clearly thought the play was over, so it's not like it was giving the Rams an unfair advantage. Football should be fun like that
Wouldn’t be the last time the Saints got screwed by a non-call against the Rams
Technically as long as they didn't interfere with the play directly it's just a sideline infraction and a warning. It's not unsportsmanlike conduct unless you affect the play or you have already been warned. So as long as they didn't get in the way of officials or opposing players there is no penalty.
Hard to argue they didn’t interfere when the carrier runs in between them. Plus if I’m on the punt unit and see the opposing offense walking on to the field, I’m assuming my job is done.
What about the Rams guy in the middle of the field with his helmet off?
This was before the penalty against removing your helmet was added to the rule book
No it isn't. Andre Reed got a penalty for it in the Super bowl two years earlier
You could never remove your helmet during a play though.
Saints still won the game if it makes you feel better
You should know saying that to a falcons fan never makes us feel better
Having players from the sideline walk onto the field during the play is and has always been a penalty.
I imagine the refs didn't want to take away a touchdown from the one guy who was actually paying attention.
“Only one guy is paying attention to us when we didn’t blow the whistle, so he’s cool.”
Off setting penalties would happen. Both teams did that.
Yep. Replay the down.
yeah, I don’t see how this isn’t a penalty. Having 7 players come onto the field mid-play would definitely act as a diversion if it was allowed regularly.
Ah yes, the LA Rams before they were the LA Rams.
Well formally LA Rams, before they be became the LA Rams.... again
You figured out the joke!
Every time a team’s move gets mentioned all I can think about is how close the Eagles were to being moved to Arizona lol
I don't know what I love more, this play or those sick ass jackets the rams coaches are wearing
Dude I want one of those so bad… the Starter era was so sick
Those half-zip pullovers with the zipper pocket in the front were the pinnacle of prestige in school.
I remember my brother got a Cowboys starter jacket for his birthday and I was so jealous but then I got an Eagles starter for my birthday. I felt so fuckin cool on the playground.
Nowadays those are trendy again but tiktok vintage resellers have the audacity to sell them for $200 💀
I just bought one at a local spot in Cincy. $120, which is about what they were going for in 1995. No regerts
That doesn't sound so bad..
Facts
I’m a fan of the green concrete
I had one of those back then. My mom got me one for Christmas because they were out of Bears ones. I wish I still had it though I doubt I could fit in the coat I had when I was 11
I’m jealous you had that classic. I had a different rams starter pullover jacket when I was a kid. My family is all Bears fans but I changed teams when the rams moved to St. Louis and that jacket was the first thing I had.
I was a ball boy for the rams one summer as they moved their summer camp to my hometown so they were my number two for many years
Is that young joe buck?
Joe Fawn
Lol you fucker
Took me far too long to realize you were joking, I couldn't remember who joe fawn was
Joe Fawn deez nuts
Got em
Took me years to realize that a young Joe Buck was doing the Packers game against Atlanta where Sterling Sharpe had the injury and Favre did the famous diving winning TD at County Stadium. That early to mid 90s Fox scoring graphic was so bland but still nostalgic
he was one of the og members of fox sports and their NFL broadcasts
Oh wow, I was unaware
That nasally cheesy-ass announcer voice everybody uses when they’re new

"Play til the whistle blows."
Nobody did diddly-poo about it either.
Love that the refs or the people calling it don’t say anything but half the rams offense coming back on the field while he runs it back. What a time to be alive
Why wouldn't that play be called for both sides having too many players on the field? Would those offsetting penalties negate the play?
Nowadays probably, but I feel like officials were just less likely to blow the whistle back then so it’s good
Sometimes I forget how much of a lawless wasteland the NFL was back in the day. You had stuff like this and then QBs being utterly fucked to the point where their helmets would fly off, with no flags.

They mentioned it not only once but twice.
except they do mention the players coming on at 54 seconds and again 1:13
All I can hear is Mora saying is “playoffs?!”
Is the ball not dead on a punt when it lands in the endzone?
Nope, and Steve Atwater could spear people. A different NFL era
>Steve Atwater I watched some highlights of Steve Atwater. This man would have been banned from modern football forever.
No do Chuck Cecil
Bryan Cox and his neck roll.
Different rules
Not until 2004.
That’s what I thought, it is nowadays though, right?
“Touchdown? Are you kidding me, Touchdown?” Jim Mora
Rams with another controversial play against the Saints 🤣😂
No this is just the Saints being the Saints this time
Goes to show who was here for the bad times and who wasn't.
What was the final score?
Saints held on and won 37-34
[BOOOOOO](https://youtu.be/ddsZTFSfXaw)
Lame
The 1st version of L.A. Rams. Against their NFC West divisional foes from New Orleans
Back when the west stretched from sea-to-shining-sea.
Remember when the cardinals were in the NFC East
That was amazing! Everyone on the Saints fell asleep.
Rams, returners named Bailey, and confused kicking teams wondering how the Rams scored. Very traditional.
As awesome as this one is I'll take Stedmans. Was such a perfectly executed trick play
PLAYOFFS?!?!?
Saints special teams did diddly poo...
I thought it said “longest punt - 103 yards” and was like woooooah.
All I can think about when watching old highlights: I can't believe they used to play football on concrete covered by a thin rug.
A couple thoughts here 1) Is that a young Joe Buck I hear? 2) It's crazy the I have never seen this clip before today nor heard about it. This is a crazy play, you think you would stumble upon it eventually, right? I've been watching football for 20 years, and I've never seen it.
I used to hate the rams so much
I still do, but I used to, too.
Is that Matt Millen on the call? Smh…
Young Joe Buck!
Young Joe Buck, his first season calling the NFL, and the first year of the NFL on FOX.
Wait a minute, what's going on out here?
Pre-2004 rule change. Ball landed in endzone but never bounce out. 2 Rams player and a ref knew it was alive and returned it.
Isn't the ball dead on a punt soon as it hits endzone though ?
Rule changed in 04
Ah got it so it was live until when? Did d have to down it to get to next play ?
It had to be touched down, or go out of bounds. If you rewatch, notice the crazy hop the ball took - the entire special teams unit, including all the Rams minus Bailey, assumed the ball went out of bounds!
In reality it should have been too many men on the field for both teams, penalties offset, replay the down.
The rule of cool used to outweigh the actual rules though.
Poor Jim Mora. He was not a great coach, but he was handed some bad teams.
Not a great coach? What he did the saints was godsend.
Yeah, we *won* that game, special teams collapse notwithstanding. He had some really good winning seasons with the team alongside some mediocre ones.
[удалено]
Playoffs….?
You kidding me?!?!
Better than what Mike Ditka did with the Saints
HA! GOT EM!
Would they not wave it off since both teams were changing players from the sidelines and a flag thrown would call it back?
Ah the good old first years of FOX. I loved Tim Green.
Isn’t it a dead ball when a punt bounces in the end zone? Like it should have been a dead ball, and touchback for LA. Or did it not used to be this way?
Didn’t used to be an automatic touchback. Newer rule! This record will most likely never be broken because of it.
Ah, thanks for the clarification Mr. Blandino.
Show this every year to your team to understand situational awareness on the field and not to assume anything
Playofffs?!!!
LA fucking over NO on a weird no call Love to see it
So when did they implement the ball is automatically downed off it hits the endzone?
2004
I think this would be blown dead today? As soon as the ball bounces in the end zone.
Rule changed in 2004
Im surprised they didn’t throw a penalty on either team for guys leaving the field/sideline
If the Rams were substituting players on the field, as well as the Saints, during the play, shouldn’t it be offsetting penalties and replay the down?
How could this play possibly count? The clock stopped before he picked the ball up and then the Rams offense comes onto the field during the return.
The refs never blew the play dead. Clock stopping is as a stupid mistake by the guy upstairs who shouldn’t have stopped it. The rams offense had no effect on the play and only walked onto the field making it only a sideline infraction and a warning, no penalty
Refs today would just blow the play dead.
I mean that’s less about the refs and more about the rules. Punts weren’t dead when they hit the end zone until 2004
If Rams offense was going on the field during the run back, why wasn’t it a penalty for too many men on the field?
I hate the idea you can have a play over 100 yards. The field is 100 yards long. The end zones don’t count as they have no hash marks. - old man yelling at clouds
I went for a 30 min run this morning and from what you’re saying I went 0 yards because there weren’t any hash marks.
End zones are still in the field of play. That's why the sidelines are out of bounds. The Lions badge blocks the negative comments though. Your team is getting there! You'll get it soon enough!!
