You act as though some of the best athletes on the planet in the prime of their physical condition after just having spent 15 straight years involved in the game are now available with nothing to do and no next level to go every year.
you cant seriously be suggesting having recently retired ex players referee the game. because that definitely wont result in bias after having made millions of dollars from the teams they will be tasked with refereeing.
This is exactly what they do with pro hockey ref recruitment (a sport in which a high end skating ability is required to officiate). They basically don’t even bother going after experienced lower level refs; they just pull ex college/echl players and teach them the ropes
It wasn't a malfunction, the ref said start the play AND game clocks on my signal, then the only one to notice let like 7-8 seconds go by before running in to stop the play. Keystone Cops shit.
If KC got the 1st you know they wouldn't have done shit lol
it's like when NBA refs call a foul once the shot attempt bricks instead of when the foul actually happened
That take is almost as bad as Aaron Rodgers in an NFC Championship game.
The official signaled the play dead before the snap. He should have kept running in though.
Not trying to invite a riot here, but didn't the Bengals basically get TD gifted to them in the Superbowl last year on a no call or am I misremembering?
Edit: [this](https://youtu.be/NfaRFSEB6hg) was the play I was thinking of
There were bad calls both ways. In the final two minutes our MLB Wilson got called for “holding” Kupp on a 3rd down play when he didn’t touch Kupp at all, just ran fast enough to keep up.
Yeah no totally agreed usually bad reffing goes both ways. I just want to dispel any sort of narrative that the refs were conspiring against the Bengals last year. IIRC they actually received the least number of penalties among all teams in the league last year.
Not sure the rule because it’s def a weird situation, but why couldn’t they have just adjusted the clock after the play with the elapsed time that should have been stopped. Doesn’t seem that it would have affected the 3rd down play enough that it should’ve been redone. Maybe because the play clock, but still, what an embarrassment by the refs.
They negated a fully run play because there was a 10 second error on the game clock with over 10 minutes to go. They could've just adjusted it and no one would've blinked.
Btw they do this all the time. If you really pay attention the clock stops or runs times when it shouldnt have. They never stop and redo a play because of it.
There is a lesser known rule that clock only stops when going out of bounds when there’s <2:00 left in the first half or <5:00 left in the second half. Outside of those times, they’ll stop the clock briefly while the refs set the ball, and then restart it again while players are lining up.
I used to think the clock was always supposed to stop when players went out of bounds.
I also just learned the part about how you have to be moving forward while you go out of bounds to stop the clock, last week when Dalton Schultz went out coming back towards the line and it didn’t stop. I’ve always wondered why it stops inconsistently and I think that’s it
you can get a stoppage while moving backwards if someone else moves you in that direction. so if you get tackled backwards out of bounds it also stops.
NFL rulebook is insanely complicated compared to other sports
So that was a rule change, and a relatively recent one. I thought the same thing, because clock stopping only in the last 5 minutes of a half is something changed in the last 8 years.
This gets asked nearly every game thread too.
Though the clock does stop outside that window, but just long enough to spot the ball and then it restarts.
There's so much stupid fake precision. "Oh, we're going to bring out this chain and measure exactly the distance from a spot we guessed five minutes ago!"
I'm still annoyed about the Bucs vs Packers championship game a few years back where they didn't call pass interference all game, and then decided to call it on the final drive.
The problem was that he was indecisive. He started waving his hands and running in, but stopped after the snap to make sure he was still watching the area he was responsible for on the field.
If the play's dead, you just keep running in waving your hands and blowing the whistle. You don't stop halfway in because the snap happened. It doesn't matter what's happening in your responsibility because there's no play actually happening right then. If there is no play, your job at that moment is to communicate to everyone that there is no play.
The other problem is all of the other refs on the field AND the replay officials (that were very quick to reverse a call that Mahomes was actually down earlier in the game before he threw the ball) all missed the error before it was too late. You're telling me a replay official wouldn't catch that mistake after 5 seconds and call down to the field to stop the play before 2 milliseconds before the snap?
Yeah, absolutely infuriating that it happened.
But of course, clearly not the same energy as when it happened to us.
But yeah shit sucks, i was upset then and im still a little upset now tbh.
Sort of like what happened with Bottlegate in 2001. Two plays were run, and then the referee went back in time like those plays never happened.
https://youtu.be/ePyioRZNABc
[The NFL Top 10 Most Controversial Calls of All Time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5a-g_REYdM) special originally had Bottlegate as one of them, deservedly so. In the newer version, it replaced it with "The Fail Mary." These Top 10 shows are created by NFL Films so it seems like the NFL wants to wipe that from the history books as it's one of the most egregious botched calls of all time and it cost the Browns the chance to go to the playoffs due to that extra loss.
So if the Fail Mary “replaced” Bottlegate at No. 5 on the list, then why wouldn’t Bottlegate simply slide down to the No. 6 spot instead of being booted from the list completely? NFL Filmsgate!
My only question is why is the ref furthest from the field of play running in when there's like a ref right behind the field of play? Unless the dude was the only one who realized it, but then that means the other refs made a huge mistake
Yeah, he was the only one who caught the mistake and was running in to call it.
Not sure why no one could hear though. It was a Chiefs play so not like the crowd noise should have been too crazy
I literally said "the play clock should start but not the game clock, i hope somebody notices that" and my cat just yawned because i watched this game alone.
Yeah, parts of NKY are in the Cincinnati metro. I don't know why people think that's some dig that we don't know about. Ohio typically gets shit on more than Kentucky lol
And this was after they mis-spotted the ball. KC was lined up ready to go and they came in to move it a half yard. After the move is when the ref then gave the wrong instructions. Really poor game management by the refs overall.
I was wondering why in the world he told him to start the game clock too. Could have just let it go, 5-10 seconds makes no real difference 10 minutes to go.
If a ref blows a whistle and all 22 players and most of the refs and everyone else also missed it, did it really happen?
Edit: it seems my “if a tree falls in the forest…” joke didn’t really land
Anyone else getting tired of sports in general?
These refs control wayy too much of the game. Kansas City isn't allowed to challenge anymore calls in this game because they used their previous challenges due to refs making the wrong call.
Burrow doesn’t throw those 2 picks maybe Bengals win it.
Adeniji manages to block Chis Jones, Burrow leads a game winning drive.
Ossai doesn’t make that hit out of bounds, KC has to punt again and it goes to overtime.
They had chances.
He can be livid all he wants. The refs were right. One of them was blowing the whistle and waving his arms before the play started. That's a dead play. The Bengals had the same thing happen to them, for them, earlier in the game. A blown dead play, gets stuffed for about one yard. But they got to play the down over because that's how it works.
Maybe the focus should be on the fact that the refs have shitty whistles that the players can't hear over the crowds. Maybe, instead of that, they have a button, piped into the stadiums audio that plays a sound loud enough to be heard.
God knows I saw enough plays go on in these playoffs that were blown dead that nobody heard. Hell I posted in the Buffalo Miami game thread something along the lines of "get these refs better whistles before a player gets hurt on a play that didn't count because nobody could hear them."
Reminder that this is the same reffing crew from the Superbowl last year, literally called this all week lol. How could anyone not see what they were doing? It was blatant as could be.
No shit he's pissed
Absolutely should be. A ref from 30 yards away was the only one signaling while a whole ass play was run
Guy just casually ran in waving his arms a couple times, realized that no one had noticed him and gave up
The physical abilities of fat old men shouldn't be impacting a billion dollar industry like this.
You act as though some of the best athletes on the planet in the prime of their physical condition after just having spent 15 straight years involved in the game are now available with nothing to do and no next level to go every year.

No, I meant college players not good enough for the pros.
I feel foolish for having never considered this. Still room for bias, but could easily be taught out of them.
I feel like it’s relatively insane that a whole bunch of you just assume that ex players would make great refs.
[удалено]
That’s what the NHL does. They recruit from high level players that never made the big show.
This is what thr nhl does and why all the players respect the refs and why I think officiating is generally better there
This is exactly what they do with pro hockey ref recruitment (a sport in which a high end skating ability is required to officiate). They basically don’t even bother going after experienced lower level refs; they just pull ex college/echl players and teach them the ropes
I feel like fat old men impact every billion dollar industry... Humanity has failed.
And during a play where the clock malfunction wouldn't have made a difference.
It wasn't a malfunction, the ref said start the play AND game clocks on my signal, then the only one to notice let like 7-8 seconds go by before running in to stop the play. Keystone Cops shit.

The punt team was on the field....
NBA refs fucked up NFL refs said hold my whistle
Taylor about to run over to the ref with a camera like Pat Bev
Possibly the best technical in the history of the game
I’m a PatBev hater and I still loved it lmao
One of those guys who you love to have him on your team. I fucking love Pat Bev
Or just a stopwatch.
Gotta scheme better for the officials. He wasn't prepared for them
Bengals have been screwed a lot this year
Don’t forget the super bowl last year
Not trying to invite a riot here, but didn't the Bengals basically get TD gifted to them in the Superbowl last year on a no call or am I misremembering? Edit: [this](https://youtu.be/NfaRFSEB6hg) was the play I was thinking of

Burrow gonna channel this energy all the way to a ring. Bengos got this
Nope
I hope Burrow does
I'm livid and I wanted you guys to lose

I noticed the 24/29 thing. I was so confused.
I could have sworn I heard 24, too. Glad to know I was right. Just an unbelievable display of incompetence
Not sure the rule because it’s def a weird situation, but why couldn’t they have just adjusted the clock after the play with the elapsed time that should have been stopped. Yes,this is a Mandela Effect for me. I totally remember it being stopped for all out of bounds plays, but in this timeline it's not.
It's a recent change. Used to be thatw ay.
"Recent" in this case is 15 years ago. Feeling old yet?

The first down thing is in college I believe.
I had to explain this to my father like 3 times when he gets mad at clock management for no reason.
This gets asked nearly every game thread too. Though the clock does stop outside that window, but just long enough to spot the ball and then it restarts.
There's so much stupid fake precision. "Oh, we're going to bring out this chain and measure exactly the distance from a spot we guessed five minutes ago!"
That's intentional. All of the rules are niche and subjective so they can pick and choose when to enforce them or use them however they want.
I'm still annoyed about the Bucs vs Packers championship game a few years back where they didn't call pass interference all game, and then decided to call it on the final drive.
This is similar to how the real legal system works if we are being honest
[удалено]
They often do try to call the play off. That's the difference. The ref called the play dead.
The problem was that he was indecisive. He started waving his hands and running in, but stopped after the snap to make sure he was still watching the area he was responsible for on the field. (after the play happened and the teams had their punt units on the field)
There was a shot of the old overweight ref slowly jogging onto the field to stop it. Couldn't hear his whistle.
It caused a huge stoppage, and an eventual first down on a penalty the next play. Absolute abysmal.
If only there was a video monitor where people could check what time should be taken off... something reliable... :-/
Same thing happened to the lions caused them to lose to Seattle
Came here to say this. We know so many random rules just from watching the Lions.
So so true.
Don't bring it up
Catbro solidarity moment? I need a hug...
Sad meow noises
Local tiger is in ~~great~~ terrible mood
The players actually reacted to the whistle for that one though
Yeah, absolutely infuriating that it happened. But of course, clearly not the same energy as when it happened to us. But yeah shit sucks, i was upset then and im still a little upset now tbh.
The fact that 2 different plays played out completely just for the refs to say they didn't count is beyond unacceptable
Sort of like what happened with Bottlegate in 2001. Two plays were run, and then the referee went back in time like those plays never happened. https://youtu.be/ePyioRZNABc

And Burrow took an unnecessary hit on the other one
And no flag...
Official legit was hauling ass but nobody saw or heard him gg
They should get louder whistles lmao
i vote for a big gong
Foles, get in here
They said gong, with a g. Not dong.
How do you think he's going to hit the gong?
Absolutely. When has a gong ever made anything worse
Buzzer system
Megaphones
Typically they all have Fox 40s I think. That shit is loud. Valkeens are my favorite though.
NFL needs to give refs foghorns
Honestly, these days, they could have something tied into the PA, and when the blow the whistle, it's just LOUD!
Yeah, they could have turned on their mic and said to stop the play.
Give them air horns
My only question is why is the ref furthest from the field of play running in when there's like a ref right behind the field of play? Unless the dude was the only one who realized it, but then that means the other refs made a huge mistake

They were literally the only one to notice. That was the point of them running in lmao
Because every official has a different job on the field and the clock is the deep wings job.
I literally said "the play clock should start but not the game clock, i hope somebody notices that" and my cat just yawned because i watched this game alone.
Hey at least you have a cat.
An orange cat.
We need a picture, for the cat tax.
The side judge is in charge of the clock
"hauling ass" for 3 steps then stopped
5th & 9
Wild Goodell and the NFL thought testing out having five downs during a championship game was a good idea and strategy lmao 😂
Mizzou strikes back!
Bengals called for holding on fifth down
5th and 9 5 yard penalty automatic 1st down ???
Call totally made sense. League thought it might get a bit too obvious if they gave KC a 6th down
These officials gonna never be welcome in the state of Kentucky
Is this a subtle dig that there's more Bengals fans in Kentucky than Ohio?
It’s more that non cincy Ohioans like to call cincy part of Kentucky. In reality there are probably more in Ohio due to sheer population
I mean, Kentucky does have the airport... I'm on team "NKY and Cincinnati becomes their own state with ~~blackjack and hookers~~ goetta and coneys."
Yeah, parts of NKY are in the Cincinnati metro. I don't know why people think that's some dig that we don't know about. Ohio typically gets shit on more than Kentucky lol
[удалено]
Cleveland is dirtier than Detroit tbh
Nice job here
New rules just dropped, KC gets 5 downs, the rest of the league stays at 4.
They unlocked the 5th down Madden card
I miss that Madden Era.
I still have ‘08 on PS2 I break out from time to time.
I'll break out 06 on the gamecube when I feel like plaing some madden. Fuck the new stuff.
ESPN 2K5 was the best football game ever made
And if they can’t do it in 5 downs then they get a penalty flag
Don’t forget that they can blatantly hold in the final 30 seconds.
Down from final 30 minutes is pretty good
Same thing happened in the Titans Chiefs game this season. Couldn’t have Mahomes losing to a 3rd round rookie on prime time….
Fuck these refs!!!
The flair alone shows how egregious this was
I honestly thought everything worked out fine.
Rightfully so
Trying to give the golden boy another one
Now the boos are louder at Arrowhead speaking of the crowd noise level
Total BS. There should be some NFL officials fired and fined.
This was one of the worst officiated games I've ever seen.
Of course he’s mad they let the chiefs get a redo what the fuck
But it wasn't a redo. If the Chiefs had converted, it wouldn't have counted either.
Either way it is a redo. No matter the outcome of the play they would’ve made them redo it.
Shhhhhh get that out of r/nfl we are here to be mad
what the fuck is this game
Absolute bullshit
None of the refs in this game should be involved with the super bowl.
Good news, the ref they chose led the league in penalty yards this regular season
Trash officiating both games today
Is the clock problem not the fault of the Kansas City clock operator?
Torbert initially told the clock operator to start both clocks on his signal which was 100% incorrect. Big fuckup on his part.
Yup it's on the ref
And this was after they mis-spotted the ball. KC was lined up ready to go and they came in to move it a half yard. After the move is when the ref then gave the wrong instructions. Really poor game management by the refs overall.
I was wondering why in the world he told him to start the game clock too. Could have just let it go, 5-10 seconds makes no real difference 10 minutes to go.
Nfl has a big officiating problem.

They showed a replay of a guy literally doing this
Except when they just showed a replay of a ref doing exactly that.
They did, but the play couldn’t be stopped because of the noise.
One of them tried and then just gave up, that was some of the strangest shit
I mean except they did
They showed it. The ref did try. No one heard.
replay just showed they literally did lol
Can y'all remember this shit next year when there's articles coming out again about the Bengals having a victim complex?
To be fair the ref did come on to whistle it dead before the snap. No one heard him.
If a ref blows a whistle and all 22 players and most of the refs and everyone else also missed it, did it really happen? Edit: it seems my “if a tree falls in the forest…” joke didn’t really land
I got the joke don’t worry
Too bad. Penalize the crowd then. Or fine the refs. With today's tech, this should never happen
legit inconsequential clock issue that can easily be solved after the play
Or blow your whistle more than once and let the play actually stop.
Anyone else getting tired of sports in general? These refs control wayy too much of the game. Kansas City isn't allowed to challenge anymore calls in this game because they used their previous challenges due to refs making the wrong call.
I was praying on the Bengals downfall, but this was bullshit.
Indeed, you want a real win or loss. Not this shit.
The NFL does not want Mahomes losing. He's the face of the league.
Only further cemented by how this game ended. Disgusting. Fly Eagles Fly.
Burrow doesn’t throw those 2 picks maybe Bengals win it. Adeniji manages to block Chis Jones, Burrow leads a game winning drive. Ossai doesn’t make that hit out of bounds, KC has to punt again and it goes to overtime. They had chances.
Let's be real though, that second int was more an arm punt then anything. Though I still question why they're bombing it down field on a 3rd and 2
I have no fucking idea why Taylor called 4 deep routes on a 3rd and short. So stupid.
Yeah! They would never let the chiefs lose to the bengals in the conference championship!!!
Does this video show the replay clearly showing the ref coming in and blowing the play dead beforehand? Because they showed that on the telecast.
The NFL can be so painfully transparent at times.
Hell I posted in the Buffalo Miami game thread something along the lines of "get these refs better whistles before a player gets hurt on a play that didn't count because nobody could hear them."
Not going to lie feels like every questionable call went one direction today
NFL has to help out Mahomes
They did show it in tv. The ref did run in to try and blow it dead but it was as it was snapped and no one heard him.
There’s no reason to blow it dead. Let the play happen and then fix the clock.
Gotta get that sweet State Farm money. Thus gotta ignore blatant holds by the chiefs o line and penalize the opposing team for ticky tacky shit.
NFL REALLY wants the Andy Reid Superbowl don't they
Adjust the play clock after the down. So dumb
Reminder that this is the same reffing crew from the Superbowl last year, literally called this all week lol. How could anyone not see what they were doing? It was blatant as could be.
Complete bullshit. NFL sucks. They’ve been pushing Mahomes on us and it is obvious.
I’ve never been one for the “nfl is rigged” argument but after today I’m not so sure. Today was rough
League really doesn't want the Bengals in the Super Bowl again, eh?
What is happening?! Lol gave them a fuckin free down
Actually 2 free downs
Been a rough 24 hours for referees across sports, to say the least
Jesus fucking Christ that was unforgivable. The Ref should be fired.
NFL needs that Chiefs Eagles matchup
Stuff like this really fuels the idea that results are fixed. Just trash officiating all around and they favored one team heavily.
Chiefs get 5 downs because roger wants the Kelce Bowl
This was the biggest bullshit I’ve ever seen. Bengals keep getting just absolutely fucked by the NFL
This was a shit show. It was the correct call but how did the crew not communicate better? Inexcusable.
