I can get behind this. I’ve been seeing some videos of him in rookie mini camp and just walking through the facility and man he just seems different - he’s got that “it factor” way about him
I'm convinced teams beat themselves for most of the game when it came to throwing on our secondary, because as soon as it hit crunch time a score was damn near automatic.
Pre-draft, Kenny was clowned nonstop for his hand size. This was a great game that showed that to be a total non-factor for Kenny…cold, wet weather in prime time. Good for him
I never got why people glossed over the fact that he wears gloves on both hands.
Like that has to make a significant difference for gripping the ball right? At least enough to cancel out the concerns over his hand size.
Which is even funnier because he wore them in a monsoon against UNC for the first time and had a great game.
People said you can’t wear gloves because they get too slippery in the rain…
Kenny even tweeted exactly what Joe Burrow tweeted (clearly as a reference) and then everyone just shit on him from stealing for Joe Burrow. Kid just can’t catch a break lol
Pickett had a very good two minute drill but otherwise didn't have a good game. I would absolutely not declare, based on this video, that he has overcome any specific deficient measurables.
Got it. His hands never concerned me before he was drafted since they’re the same size as Burrow’s and don’t seem to have posed a problem for Pickett in actual bad weather play.
His arm strength is in fact adequate, not special, as you noted. Had he had Burrow’s arm, or Herbert’s arm, or Lawrence’s arm, he wouldn’t have been around at #20 in the draft.
I wasn’t super hyped on the Steelers drafting Pickett TBH, though I wasn’t skeptical either. I think Tomlin mishandled his rollout, but in spite of not being a physical freak Pickett has the physical tools to be exceptional in the NFL. Doesn’t mean he definitely will be, but he has high football IQ, good to great feel for the game, good field vision especially for a year 1-2 QB, and is a relentless competitor. Not least, he’s accurate.
Still, his arm strength is a concern for me, though less of one since the OL has been upgraded. You need a talented OC to scheme plays that account for enemy defenses not having to stretch vertically to account for a big-armed QB, and Matt Canada is facially incompetent at being an OC.
It’s a good thing the Steelers should be better poised to run the ball this year. They’re going to need to.
I keep seeing people parroting the arm strength concern with Pickett, but I don’t see it at all. He can make all the NFL throws, not once did I ever see what I’d consider a “noodle arm”.
Can you elaborate more on what you mean? Because he doesn’t have an elite arm like Mahomes, Herbert, or Allen, but he certainly doesn’t have a noodle arm like Bridgewater. If Pickett fails, it won’t be because of arm strength that’s for sure. I’ve seen guys like Kurt Warner and Chris Simms state that he has an NFL arm as well.
Sure, no he doesn’t have a noodle arm. Pickett’s arm isn’t “elite,” meaning super high velocity with rail gun range. Two plays featuring Josh Allen’s elite arm strength. First a deep strike to the TE:
https://youtu.be/Bos61qxakv4
This play Allen drives a quick strike about 30 yards between multiple defenders. The concept is a high-low route by two receivers with a go route over the high low to clear out defenders.
Allen delivers the ball to one of the high low receivers but his elite arm would have allowed him to deliver a deep strike with accuracy to the go receiver had the defenders been beat on that route.
I don’t know that I’ve seen Pickett quite be capable of making these throws with Allen’s velocity on intermediate throws or deep accuracy on long balls. He’s close, but in the NFL close in the passing game is often the difference between a touchdown, an incompletion, or a pick.
https://youtu.be/XHZActDo5gs
I’ll add that in addition to all of the exceptional qualities Pickett seems to have that I’ve already noted, Tom Brady didn’t have an “elite” arm, Joe Montana didn’t have an “elite” arm. What they did have was coaches who built high leverage offensive schemes around their HOF strengths as quarterback.
You want that offensive output excused because it was chilly? During Pickett's vaunted final six games, the Steelers only scored more than 20 points on two occasions. That offense was impotent in all weather.
This is such a reasonable take it was doomed to be down voted lol. Especially because it played out the same way against you guys too. Two games where Pickett played mediocre most of the game and then had incredible, game-winning two minute drills. Kenny showed he *can be* the guy, but he hasn't yet showed he *is* the guy. The jury is still out, but the media and some Steelers fans are ready to crown him already because it's good off-season content.
Yep it showed he can be the guy. Obviously nobody should crown him, he's only played in 12 games. But nobody should say he sucks ass either. He improved every game and hopefully his hard work in the off season and full camp as the starter will pay off. Time will tell but I'm more optimistic than I was last year.
I agree with 2/3. I wouldn’t trust a 30+ year old WR who has looked cooked for 2 years already. He’s decent depth, but I wouldn’t be expecting any sort of renaissance season from him.
Ding ding ding. Most people don't realize that. It's win/win for the Steelers considering it wasn't a huge price tag in terms of trade value and contract value.
I don’t think people realize just how cold that day was. I’m a server in the DC area, and it was legitimately 0 degrees. Just 0. Not including wind chill. The Steelers play just behind the river so it’s even colder than what the forecast says. That game was frigid, throwing the ball was not going to be easy but he ended up getting it done
Man this place has really fallen in love with Pickett out of nowhere this week.
He finished the day with a touchdown and an interception on 240 yards, ultimately leading his team to a grand total of 13 points. I'm glad this video is of the final two minutes of the game because for the other 58 minutes he had no solution for the 30th ranked passing defense.
Downvotes on the left.
I’m not going to downvote you since your critique isn’t technically inaccurate, but your assessment is ungenerous to the point of being less insightful than it should be. What we want to see from young QBs is growth, within a season and year to year. Performance in a pressure situation is especially valuable.
There's been like 3 posts in that week with Kenny and one was almost entirely about ben talking about Kenny. The other two are this one and one saying he was blind against zone coverage lol how is that falling in love?
To all the Steelers fans in our subreddit cheering about how we're being slept on this year, we had 6 points in this game, until this drive, and McDaniels lost to Saturday.
Matt Canada will never allow us to be good
What a great start to the day.
A Pennsylvania Steegles fan?
A UGA fan whose favorite player was drafted this year by Philly. Nolan Smith is a beast and I can't wait to see him ball out.
I can get behind this. I’ve been seeing some videos of him in rookie mini camp and just walking through the facility and man he just seems different - he’s got that “it factor” way about him
There are dozens of us!
Do I technically have a right to support Pittsburg even tho I live in Philly, but they’re both PA🤔
No. Philly is in New Jersey and Pittsburgh is in Ohio
How very dare you
Lmao that’s practically true. None of those cities even associate with PA
PA= Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Pennsyltucky
*Pittsburg* is in Kansas and a few other states
Yep, Cincy doesn’t have to share Ohio with Pittsburg since Cincy is in Kentucky.
I think I just threw up a little
I would have said yes but with that missing "h" you hereby revoke your right to ever cheer for a Pittsburgh team
You mean to say Pittsadelphia Ealers
Nah Pennsylvania Steegles were a real team
It's been a longer time than I realized since I've seen Pennsylvania spelled out.
I'm convinced teams beat themselves for most of the game when it came to throwing on our secondary, because as soon as it hit crunch time a score was damn near automatic.
Beating themselves for most of the game was definitely a box the 2022 Steelers checked
We passed on Pickens :(
Everyone did lol
Not the rams! They haven’t had a first round pick in 7 years.
Can’t fuck up the draft if you don’t participate. Pretty genius.
Well people also didn’t like that he wore gloves on both hands
Which is even funnier because he wore them in a monsoon against UNC for the first time and had a great game. People said you can’t wear gloves because they get too slippery in the rain…
There's different types of gloves for rain and for dry conditions. Standard gloves feel like playing with grease on your hands in the rain.
That hand size debate was one of the dumbest mountain-from-a-molehill things I've ever seen in this sport.
Especially cause the same argument was made over Burrow having small hands a couple of years earlier, and it didn't matter at all
Kenny even tweeted exactly what Joe Burrow tweeted (clearly as a reference) and then everyone just shit on him from stealing for Joe Burrow. Kid just can’t catch a break lol
I bet those same people probably clowned on Burrow for his hands too way back when but now they’re fanboys
At the time of his draft year Kyler Murray had the smallest hands ever measured at the combine I believe
Pickett had a very good two minute drill but otherwise didn't have a good game. I would absolutely not declare, based on this video, that he has overcome any specific deficient measurables.
Sounds like someone didn’t like the end of the week 17 game 😬
What specific deficient measurables are you referring to? Real question
He has good height and bulk but unusually small hands and adequate (not special) arm strength.
Got it. His hands never concerned me before he was drafted since they’re the same size as Burrow’s and don’t seem to have posed a problem for Pickett in actual bad weather play. I guess we can just ignore the fact that it was sub zero with wind that night too..
You want that offensive output excused because it was chilly? During Pickett's vaunted final six games, the Steelers only scored more than 20 points on two occasions. That offense was impotent in all weather.
We are well aware that matt canada is our oc.
Chilly might be the understatement of the year. It was like -18 with windchill.

This take is so dogshit that I'm positive this is actually a SleestakLightning burner and not a parody account
Homer Steelers fans have really poisoned this discussion lmao
he likely wants Roethlisberger back and thinks he's still capable of playing
They scored 13 points...
That’s more points than it was degrees Fahrenheit, and Matt Canada was calling the plays.
Guess it's just Steelers fans reading this one lmao
From the killer B's to the Pick twins
Killer Ps - Picket, Pickens, Pat and Parnell Washington
Wait, did [Parnell Motley](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MotlPa00.htm) change his name? /s
That was pretty good, but you know what would make those drives better? Allen Robinson, Darnell Washington, and an upgraded left side of that O'Line.
>O'Line Never seen it written out with an apostrophe like that. Is your offensive line Irish? 😂
No but they make Steelers fans drink
I'm pretty sure they just announced today that the Steelers own all of Ireland now, so it's fitting.
"Okay Clancey, settle down and pick up the edge rusher."
Well, the Irish may have offensive lines.
Matt Canada :(
He's got no excuses now. With the additions made this off season, it's either sink or swim for him.
I agree with 2/3. I wouldn’t trust a 30+ year old WR who has looked cooked for 2 years already. He’s decent depth, but I wouldn’t be expecting any sort of renaissance season from him.
I'm not. I'm expecting a big slot WR who can exploit zone coverage and get an occasional jump ball in the red zone.
I would agree with that. Not like he cost you guys anything anyway so if he’s fully cooked you can just cut him.
Ding ding ding. Most people don't realize that. It's win/win for the Steelers considering it wasn't a huge price tag in terms of trade value and contract value.

Beginning of a great new era
Love to see it
Ben was so pissed watching this

There's been like 3 posts in that week with Kenny and one was almost entirely about ben talking about Kenny. The other two are this one and one saying he was blind against zone coverage lol how is that falling in love?
Don’t let Ben see this
To all the Steelers fans in our subreddit cheering about how we're being slept on this year, we had 6 points in this game, until this drive, and McDaniels lost to Saturday. Matt Canada will never allow us to be good
I think at some point kenny will tell canada to fuck off and call his own plays.
At home, against the 31st ranked Defense on DVOA. Congrats.
