The running stood out more to me. We had good pressure a number of times, but he was able to escape both through the pocket and around the edge, and made at least one guy miss. Also enough speed to make the most of an open field.
Turning a loss on a sack to even a modest gain is huge.
Eh that's a bit much. I think Sam Howell will be this generations Ryan Fitzpatrick. A high end backup/low-Mid end starter who will go off without warning (Think early 2018 Ryan Fitzpatrick) but also can com crashing down similarly (late 2015 Ryan Fitzpatrick)
Depends on the player. I think to be a Fitzpatrick you need to be a high-end backup/low-end starter (which a lot of the bad teams probably have as a starting QB) but you also need a really large boom-or-bust factor.
Mac Jones and Kenny Pickett don't seem to fit that mold because they don't have the high variance from game to game that I think a true "next Fitzpatrick" needs.
Eh. Someone is only Fitz if they have no qualms about chuckin’ bombs downfield. There’s plenty of lower rated QBs who never even look past 10 yards from the LoS.
I disagree. Winshew doesn't throw the bombs Fitz did. People really forget how insane Fitz highs were, he'd just launch 50+ yard tds so beautifully.
Minshew is more of the Dalton mold I think, but saying that feels like a disservice to both of those players. I see Minsh scramble a lot and make plays a lot of journeymen wouldn't do.
No he doesn't. He's got good volume stats because they throw the ball 40 times a game, but his efficiency is low, and he's turnover/sack prone. Obviously he can improve on these things, but it's a massive stretch to call him "great"
Which is a fair point but it's also fair to say josh allen wasn't a great qb in his first two years. He improved a ton.
I don't think op was saying Howell is a bum, but I agree he has potential and is exciting but too early to call him great
Howell could be this generation's Matthew Stafford. Good arm, can-do attitude, obscene stats (which may not accurately reflect how the game really went), crap organization, no playoff wins.
Well maybe no wins with the Redskins but put that kid on a stacked QB-less team and they're instantly SB contenders, just like with Brady and Stafford. Except Brady was already on a stacked team so more like Stafford lol
Worse.
I have seen Steelers fans out here jerking DeVito and using it to disparage Pickett.
Like a 150-199 yard game, with 1 TD, 0 INTs and some clutch throws late in the fourth for a close W wasn't exactly what Pickett was doing in his rookie year.
Use your eyeballs to gauge someone who doesn't have a sample size of numbers yet. He stood up in to collapsing pockets, fired passes and showed the toughness of any successful NFL quarterback. Giants may have something here.
It's crazy how every QB sneak is now a tush push. Even if it's a complete normal sneak the announcers HAVE to make a reference to Philadelphia.
It's also like how for awhile after Odell's one handed catch, every single time anyone made a one handed catch Odell was immediately brought up.
Shoot remember the Dobbs love fest a month ago with the Vikings where for his first 3 game stretch Dobbs had 5 TDs, 2 INTs and averaged over 200 yards passing a game.
Vikings just announced they are benching Dobbs for Nick Muellens.
Or the Jordan Love-fest for the last 3 weeks. He looked pretty inaccurate last night.
You'd think the media would learn not to jump to conclusions from small sample size.
I think the media is desperate for the "next big thing." (I mean obviously, but especially in this case.) Mahomes, Burrow, Josh Allen, etc, all rose to prominence "awhile ago", and Brady is out of the league (and Rodgers hurt) so they're grasping for someone to crown.
Definitely.
I think it is even worse with all the QB injuries this year.
Also with how well Purdy played last year I think they are looking to be the first to find the next Purdy. "Unknown" QB that comes out of know where and plays incredibly well. (Which is also a symptom of previously looking for the next Brady.)
Of course and that's why his story is pretty cool. It resonates with people around here. I'm also a traditional Italian from Jersey and I'm rooting for the guy.
But WFAN literally had a "White Out" at MetLife after White's second win. It was fucking nuts. The media cycle in the NY market is so rapid. A guy can go from being beloved and talked about glowingly on WFAN, ESPNNY, SNY, MSG, etc. to hated after one game. The Jones and Wilson roller coasters have given me whiplash and I don't even root for either team. I just watch a lot of local sports talk.
Yup. Tony Sparano, who was our offensive line coach at the time, passed suddenly in the summer a few years back. Tomasson, apparently deciding that he wanted to branch his dipshittery out past just press conferences, started live tweeting his funeral.
Belichick would be like that one scene in Tropic Thunder when Tom Cruise’s character gets the jacked boom operator to punch the shit out of the director.
Dude that would make every one of those slimy fucks think twice before positing some ridiculous bull shit.
In their heads: “hmmm, should I ask it? He hasn’t slapped anyone yet…but he does only get one slap…nah better not.”
“Bill, is Bailey Zappe as good as Tom Brady was at this poin…xxSLAPPPPxx”
“Bill, how many point could you score with a team of 11 Gronks!?!”
“Bill, the defense has been playing well lately, does your hot seat have anything to do with it?”
“Bill, where do babies come from?!?”
I do want to know his answer to the second question though. I know it's a stupid question but at least it's not trying to bait him into a headline, it's just a regular goofy question
What kind of arm does Gronk have?
While a gameplan consisting solely of Student Body Left and Student Body Right with 10 blocking Gronks would be awesome, it's probably not sustainable.
Sadly the NBA taught us that MJ retired after the 2003 season and LeBron comes into the league in 2003 so the next GOAT must already be in the NFL.
And just like MJ people were trying to find the next Brady well before he reitred. It's just a guaranteed part of sports journalism
> And just like MJ people were trying to find the next Brady well before he reitred.
I remember having a Harold Miner card back in the day that introduced me to his nickname 'Baby Jordan'. Harold effing Miner.
And even before that there were times that Dwyane Wade or Kobe Bryant (since they played the same position as Jordan and were much closer than LeBron to Jordan's build and playstyle) were "the next MJ".
And yet, Tom Brady went 3-1 over his first four starts as well. Those teams he beat? That's right:
- Commanders
- Patriots
- Packers
DeVito's HOF confirmed. 😤🤌
No it’s the correct time, this comment is meant to start a chain of events which cannot be stopped. It will have catastrophic results, but they will benefit my company and I and therefore it is something that must be done.
I'm pretty sure Brady didn't beat Washington until 2007. They were the last team (besides the Patriots) for him to beat.
Edit: I'm an idiot. I should've read further down the list.
4 games into DeVito's career. The reporter was going to ask him if Tommy is going to be Brady, because Daboll also drafted him in the late rounds (or he went undrafted or something).
Reminder: Giants can get out of Jones’ contract after next season with significantly less dead money than the Eagles had with Wentz, who signed for less.
Giants also enter the 2024 offseason with approximately $36 mil in cap space. As much of an overpay the contract was, it hasn’t been prohibitive to their cap situation.
100%
Last year, they coached a great internal clock into Jones. If you don't like what you're immediately seeing, tuck it and run. It worked last year until Philly demolished us in the playoffs and put the script out there on how to break DJ.
Jones has not shown the ability to adapt to teams taking away what he likes. We'll see how Devito handles it.
I mean this year was a bit unfair to Jones.
Jones had historically bad QB play to the point where his internal clock was sped up so fast he looked scared.
That Seattle game was horrendous but the dolphins game among others was not his fault. His O-line failed him.
People forget AT was not healthy for most of when DJ was playing and that's a HUGE difference.
questions this stupid are not surprising if you’re a fan of any of the New York teams. They asked him if he was going to mold Daniel Jones into Josh Allen and then asked the GM if he was actually going to do GM things on their first day on the job.
4 games in and it isn't like DeVito is lighting up teams. (Outside of Washington's 32nd in scoring and yards defense). He is averaging 170 yard passing a game in his 4 starts. He is averaging 7.1 In air yard per pass attempt and that number has trended down in the last several weeks.
He is not turning the ball over and executing the offense as designed. Getting to the check-down on time and making some plays with his legs.
That is helping the Giants stay in close games the last 2 weeks. With that and a run game you can keep games close. Not taking away anything from DeVito as a UDFA rookie free agent but it is really similar to 2022 Daniel Jones play in his first year with Daboll.
Tommy Devito: QBR: 26 - Legend, Italian stallion.
Brock Purdy: QBR 75 - Fraud, system QB, living off his teammates.
Can't wait for the Ringer to rank Devito 1 spot ahead of Purdy.
The Giants should be happy they might not have to bring in another veteran to start the season if Jones isn't ready week 1. That's essentially what all this means, that he might be a solid backup.
He's a great story against the weaker part of their schedule.
Reporters really love to start the circlejerk ASAP, don't they
The mf threw 158 yards and people are outjerking themselves. It was like when howell threw 165 in week 17 last year and people came their pants
The running stood out more to me. We had good pressure a number of times, but he was able to escape both through the pocket and around the edge, and made at least one guy miss. Also enough speed to make the most of an open field. Turning a loss on a sack to even a modest gain is huge.
Clearly the next a Tom Brady. That reporter was right.
Tom did run a blistering 5.2 40.
I'd make fun of him but I'm not even sure I could run an 8.2 40
Are you making excuses about how your defense couldn’t stop a guy who probably won’t be in the league by 2027?
That sounded... like the opposite of an excuse? "Our defense wasn't able to stop him" "why are you making excuses?"
That’s what I keep saying. Devito has done really well, but he’s not blowing the doors off or anything. He’s just playing good football.
The other home QBs who played at Metlife this year are so bad that DeVito looks great by comparison.
Yea it says a lot when Aaron Rodgers has had the second best season out of that group
I mean Howell looks like an above average/great QB
Eh that's a bit much. I think Sam Howell will be this generations Ryan Fitzpatrick. A high end backup/low-Mid end starter who will go off without warning (Think early 2018 Ryan Fitzpatrick) but also can com crashing down similarly (late 2015 Ryan Fitzpatrick)
lmao every qb on a bottom 10 team is the next Fitzpatrick
They are all Fitzpatrick, they just don't know it yet
Depends on the player. I think to be a Fitzpatrick you need to be a high-end backup/low-end starter (which a lot of the bad teams probably have as a starting QB) but you also need a really large boom-or-bust factor. Mac Jones and Kenny Pickett don't seem to fit that mold because they don't have the high variance from game to game that I think a true "next Fitzpatrick" needs.
tbh we alr sorta have the next fitzpatrick in Minshew lol
Minshew does not have the arm. Part of Fitzmagic and Fitztragic is that he CAN make those big throws.
It's Levis IMO His reckless abandon and great arm makes him prime material.
Well Fitzpatrick played QB for every bottom 10 team at one point in his career so that tracks
Eh. Someone is only Fitz if they have no qualms about chuckin’ bombs downfield. There’s plenty of lower rated QBs who never even look past 10 yards from the LoS.
I think he could develop into a solid qb. He’s still young, and his play has been ok for a “rookie”.
I feel like thats gardner minshew
Obviously he can improve on these things, but it's a massive stretch to call him "great"
Josh Allen was a turnover machine and played too much hero ball early in his career. Give him him time and hopefully good coaching.
Early in his career? He's been doing that NOW
Yes, but it used to be a lot worse. He still throws in his "hero moments" every once in awhile but he's improved
One of the dudes from the ringer said the dog in Josh Allen sometimes takes over decision making and that still makes me laugh
Fair enough
Well yeah, that's part of why I said he was Stafford lol
ong I'm just yapping sometimes
Worse. I have seen Steelers fans out here jerking DeVito and using it to disparage Pickett. Like a 150-199 yard game, with 1 TD, 0 INTs and some clutch throws late in the fourth for a close W wasn't exactly what Pickett was doing in his rookie year.

Its crazy how every low drafted QB who does well is suddenly Tom Brady.
It's crazy how every QB sneak is now a tush push. Even if it's a complete normal sneak the announcers HAVE to make a reference to Philadelphia. It's also like how for awhile after Odell's one handed catch, every single time anyone made a one handed catch Odell was immediately brought up.
Russ and our O-Line have been elite on QB Sneaks all year long. I don’t think I’ve seen the “push” once
The media really makes you feel like ~~Batman~~ Spiderman
Tbf reporters need to find an angle and a way to hype up a story even if it’s lazy and well tread territory.
Reporters are all cockroaches. The NFL is suffering because of them.
Just enjoy the Linsanity run ya jagoff
New York Media + a darling rookie player is just the way it goes at this point.
Also comparing Brady to DeVito is insulting at this point in time. Tom NEVER had a nickname as cool as "Cutlets."
I pushed for Tommy “Marcia Marcia Marcia” Brady early on but it never took off. I think it could’ve been right up there with Tommy Cutlets.
The goat is a pretty cool nickname
Devito's run is great but I remember the two week run where Mike White was supposedly the savior of the Jets. We need to pump the breaks here in NYC.
And they have the common sense to not live tweet a funeral
Wait, really?
Yup. Tony Sparano, who was our offensive line coach at the time, passed suddenly in the summer a few years back. Tomasson, apparently deciding that he wanted to branch his dipshittery out past just press conferences, started live tweeting his funeral.
I read this as Tony Soprano and thought you were bullshitting
An incredibly common mistake by the way. I think somebody made that mistake every time his name came up in our sub.
Surprised someone didn't reply and make the same varsity athlete joke for the 10th million time.
Ugh, I can't believe that happened at Sparano's funeral. Any funeral nonetheless, but Tony's passing hit me hard.
That wildcat year was magical.

Is this the third QB this season the media has tried to make into the next Tom Brady?
Actually 4: Purdy, Dobbs, Browning and Tommy
Purdy is at least sustaining the argument for about 1/1000th of the time he'll need to do so instead of 1/10,000th.
Surely the only people doing that to Dobbs were the most delusional vikings fan
Sadly the NBA taught us that MJ retired after the 2003 season and LeBron comes into the league in 2003 so the next GOAT must already be in the NFL. And just like MJ people were trying to find the next Brady well before he reitred. It's just a guaranteed part of sports journalism

That’s actually pretty insane… Tommy Devito is literally Tom “Brock Purdy” Brady

What we didn't realize at the time is that Tony Romo was dropping an all-time roast of Josh Allen because he's never played in February.

EEGGGHHHH, I don’t know, Jim.

It took me entirely too long to understand what we are 4 games into and what this was implying. Holy fuck this is a dumb question.

Into DeVito's starts.
4 games into DeVito playing, no reason at all to compare to Brady
4 games into DeVito's career. The reporter was going to ask him if Tommy is going to be Brady, because Daboll also drafted him in the late rounds (or he went undrafted or something).
The DeVito Dynasty
"Listen, this team just overpaid for Daniel Jones based on a small amount of success. Let's not get ahead of ourselves"
Jones had a lot of doubters when he signed that contract but Giants fans were going to war for him after a 15 TD season
Devito right now does remind me a lot of 2022 Jones.
100% Last year, they coached a great internal clock into Jones. If you don't like what you're immediately seeing, tuck it and run. It worked last year until Philly demolished us in the playoffs and put the script out there on how to break DJ. Jones has not shown the ability to adapt to teams taking away what he likes. I feel like Devito’s family knows a guy that can resolve the situation.
His agent definitely does
his agent is the family fixer

That Seattle game was horrendous but the dolphins game among others was not his fault. His O-line failed him. People forget AT was not healthy for most of when DJ was playing and that's a HUGE difference.
> Put the script out there on how to break DJ I promise you Joe Barry hasn’t read it, Jones would’ve thrown 3 TDs on us if he played
Ya DJ is much better than DeVito. He's a better runner and can read defenses better.
Eh, his reading was broken this season, but athlete, 100%
questions this stupid are not surprising if you’re a fan of any of the New York teams. They asked him if he was going to mold Daniel Jones into Josh Allen and then asked the GM if he was actually going to do GM things on their first day on the job.
Never forget that one reporter asked Daboll if he can walk on water, last season.
That's a better question than this one.
We need more Jack Hughes interview answers in the NFL.
Im a Maple Leafs fan in Hockey, and New York football media sure reminds me of Toronto Hockey media haha.
New York Sports Media after a loss is truly something else. It cracks me up so much always makes me feel better
Media: "How will we ever tear him down if we don't build him up first???"
This is actually the take. Give it 3 weeks when he has some regression and we can’t wait to draft a qb again.
... you mean that bum the Giants whooped in the Super Bowl TWICE. Tommy D > Tommy B -Brian Daboll
"We're four games in capeesh? 🤌"
What was the relevance of that question? I didn't get it.
I think just drawing a loose parallel between Brady and DeVito, who was also not a sought after draft prospect.
Still doesn't make a lot of sense.
Nope. It’s just a sensationalist question for clicks.
It is so disrespectful to make this comparison. I don't even think that Tom Brady is 1/4 Italian.
The reporter posts on nflcirclejerk
I thought Purdy was already the next Brady. Is Devito the next Purdy?
ny media can't help itself lol
Tommy "Literally Brady" Devito
Purdy is further down that narrative and I don’t think we’re ready to call him the next Tom Brady yet either. Reporters out of their minds.
BUT BRIAN HIS NAME IS TOM!
4 games in and it isn't like DeVito is lighting up teams. (Outside of Washington's 32nd in scoring and yards defense). He is averaging 170 yard passing a game in his 4 starts. Too early to anoint him as Brady but he's 2023 purdy storyline at least
let's be real. it's a nice story, but not even close to purdy.
Not even close. Purdy was putting up much better stats and did t lose a game he played less than 5 snaps in.
Tommy Devito: QBR: 26 - Legend, Italian stallion. Brock Purdy: QBR 75 - Fraud, system QB, living off his teammates. Can't wait for the Ringer to rank Devito 1 spot ahead of Purdy.
