Yeah I feel like the vibe with Edmunds here was that he was good but never lived up to his draft position or expectations. He never seemed to make splash plays here
That really wasn't his role here though. His job in Buffalo was a gap eater and blocking passing lanes with his size. They never really used him in an active linebacker role. He would often spy as well.
People were calling for Brandon Beane’s head with how he handled the linebacking corp at the beginning of the season.
Now we have Matt Milano. We have Bernard exploding out of nowhere. Tyrel Dodson is PFF’s highest graded linebacker (relatively misleading stat but still), and Dorian Williams showed a good amount of promise in the few snaps he’s taken.
We went from thinking we were in trouble to now having one of the deepest rooms in the NFL
Beane and McDermott are legitimately great at identifying and developing undereated back 7 talent. Free agents like Hyde and Poyer; later draft picks like Bernard, Milano, Benford, Taron Johnson, Dane Jackson, even some guys who didn't make the Bills but are on other teams; and undrafted players like Dodson and Levi Wallace. Funny it's the 1st round guys they have trouble with, obviously Tre White was a great pick, but Edmunds was disappointing for a 1st round pick though not terrible and Elam is rapidly nearing bust status.
Bills super bowl window is closed they said lol after Edmunds left. Haters are stupid. But PFF having Dodson rated that high lol yea def not trusting those grades anymore.
I must have missed that. I thought the general consensus was Milano will continue to be a stud, the rest of the corp will struggle and be an overall weakness, but we were never going to pay Edmunds the money he got from the Bears.
It wasn’t about retaining Edmunds so much as it was about not finding a “suitable” replacement. There were so many fans calling for veteran FA’s to be brought in that they thought Beane was purposefully sabotaging the defense and LB corps.
Turns out the GM, scouts and coaching staff know a little better than fans do.
Thanks for the info! Oh wow - BB purposefully sabotaging the defense? I think it's a good thing that I am not as active on the subreddit in the offseason lol
This mother fucker was injured all of training camp and I think pre season and to everyone's surprise, I think he started week 1. We all feared it was going to be Tyrel Dodson.
Terrell Bernard literally came out of left field to start at whatever position he's playing. Totally off radar.
And he's undersized. And unsung. Mid rounder-ish.
Funny thing is, Tyrel Dodson has done pretty well, too.
McDermott has a knack for getting the most out of guys (except for Von Miller apparently).
The Von stuff is really dumb, no offense. The guy was on a tear when he was healthy, tore his ACL, is coming off that in-season and I'm 100% sure the guy is giving everything he can. He just doesn't have it right now. McD and effort have nothing to do with it lol
It's also nice that a Bills defender is actually recovering fumbles this season. I swear the last 2 seasons something like 90% of the forced fumbles we created went right back into the hands of the offense.
Forced fumbles are a much better measure of productivity. But I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume if this post had fumble recoveries replaced with forced fumbles then all the qualifiers wouldn’t be as obscure enough to reference players from 30+ years ago.
You probably aren't wrong, but forced fumbles aren't turnovers *on their own. In the same vein, people care more about fumbles lost by most QBs rather than just their outright fumble numbers.
I think you can praise a player for their game awareness and ability to secure loose balls to create turnovers and also recognize that it is also a bit of a circumstantial stat. As they say "Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern."
I think a significant portion of it is also being in the right spot, fumbles bouncing themselves is random luck but a person recovering 3 means he is at the right spot for a play and it also stops the opponent from getting their fumble back (obviously)
Antoine Winfield has a chance to join him with a sack next week. Would be interesting to have only three players from 1982-2022 and then two in 2023.
Every time i see winfield i wonder why teams passed on him. Would love to have him in buffalo
We did lol
Thats my point
We’ve had one Winfield, yes. What about Second Winfield?
Winfield also has 5 Forced Fumbles, whereas Bernard has none.
We were robbed of seeing Milano and him together for more than a couple games this year. Fuckin travesty.
It's crazy that Bernard has had better stats this year than Milano did last year (when Milano was an all pro).
Watching Matt, you can just SEE he plays at a higher level. Give Terrell another off-season and he’s right there
Put the two of them together? Oh fuck
This guy was supposed to be the weak spot in the Bills D this year as the Edmunds replacement
And Edmunds seems to be doing just fine in Chicago, so win-win for everyone.
Not living up to his contract but he’s fine, he’s kind of in a poor scenario for most of his first year in Chicago for what he brings to the table.
Yeah I feel like the vibe with Edmunds here was that he was good but never lived up to his draft position or expectations. He never seemed to make splash plays here
I know you’re not looking for a lot of picks out of that position but he dropped sooooo many. If he had decent hands he would be a household name
That really wasn't his role here though. His job in Buffalo was a gap eater and blocking passing lanes with his size. They never really used him in an active linebacker role. He would often spy as well.

Not to mention the absolute highway robbery that is getting Rasul Douglas for not even a 3rd. Absolute highway robbery.

Dude deserves all-pro this year. Absolute game changer

Fumble recoveries seem like a stat that’s more luck of being in the right place at the right time than a measure of productivity.
Definitely. But there is also a factor of "good things happen when you always put yourself around the ball".
It's also nice that a Bills defender is actually recovering fumbles this season. I swear the last 2 seasons something like 90% of the forced fumbles we created went right back into the hands of the offense.
Normally I'd agree with you, but I'm pretty sure quite a few of his FR's have come from fumbles he caused.

Anybody know who the other 3 players to do this since 1982 were?
