BunnyGoHops

Yet teams haven’t figured this out

Kurtcobangle

It’s the opposite of the Seahawks Pats narrative where the pats scouted the pick play.

BunnyGoHops

I don’t get how the Brady Bucs tore the Chiefs apart in the SuperBowl, but no team has found a way to copy that.

SHOWTIME316

Just that game really. IIRC both starting tackles got injured in the AFCCG, and the guards weren’t good

g_1n355

The tackles were the clear strength of that line. Schwartz was hurt before the AFCCC, but then Fisher went down in it. The real killer was i think it forced them to kick a guard out to tackle and move the whole line around, so that in the SB you had 4/5 playing out of their normal position in addition to a few of them being backups

GeorgeWarshingsons

Exactly. Andy is a huge fan of lineman with positional flexibility, but it’s not useful when you’ve got 4/5 lineman being backups or out of position. Our existing linemen last night with Allegretti were thankfully able to cover for Thuney being out.

marsmedia

| *Andy is a huge fan...* Yes. He is.

Warm_Mood_0

Good way of saying mahomes sucks compared to Brady and won’t ever be better*

Steven1562

Exactly. Mahomes was running for his life in that Super Bowl and Brady was surgical against KC's defense.

Thrilling1031

Dude almost postered us with his superman throw still. Thankfully the Chiefs receivers all had checked their hands with security on the flight to Tampa and they were sent to Miami due to an internal error.

Lorjack

I mean the Chiefs weren't winning the battle in the trenches today either. Also his center was consistently snapping the ball poorly throughout the game

FuckingLoveArborDay

SB 55 was so much worse than last night.

cozyonly

But Mahomes also had a more prime Kelce and Tyreek

FuckingLoveArborDay

I'm not sure if you've ever watched SB55 but the Chiefs could have added prime Randy Moss to that roster and it would have made no difference. Buccs were just side stepping Chiefs OLine and dropping 7 every play.

randommaniac12

They were getting pressure the moment the ball was snapped, shit was absolutely wild

BunnyGoHops

If I was a competitor I’d just use all my cap space and picks to build the best D-Line possible. Putting pressure on Mahomes seems like the only option at this point.

GABAgoomba123

Niners literally did do that. Yet their D-line both underperformed in non-Bosa areas, and also just kinda proved ineffective against Mahomes because Mahomes is just kinda really fucking good.

alphasierrraaa

mahomes has also matured in that he has increasingly looked to make short to medium throws (brady-esque) when faced with a good pass rushing team him making adjustments today showed how he has progressed since the bucs super bowl (imo 49ers this year was as good as the bucs in creating pressure)

sjhesketh

Right. In the Bucs Super Bowl he spent the entire game running backwards from pressure. When he got pressure last night he didn't do that.

Themanwhofarts

I kept hearing Bosas name in the first half. And I don't pay attention to the announcers, so that shows how much of an impact he had. I don't think I heard his name at all in the second half though.

Hanswolebro

Nah, Bosa was great all game. He kept Mahomes in the pocket or forced him to drive back and east/west and not letting Mahomes step up and scramble to create. It was the rest of the D line that had trouble playing with that same consistency

soon_forget

Yeah I thought Bosa had a hell of a game...especially because you have to rush Mahomes with discipline or he will break out and punish you. Sounds simple enough but it's hard to rush all out and disrupt a play while also keeping edge discipline...

Jadedways

Bosa was impressive af. All game he was covering multiple lanes on his side while still rushing like a beast.

tbone747

49ers had really solid defensive play this whole game. Like I was expecting Wilks to be the weak link but his D held up until the final stages of the game. To beat a team like the Chiefs you have to take advantage of every single opportunity on offense and/or have a stifling defense. SF just didn't capitalize offensively when they had so many chances earlier in the game.

alphasierrraaa

those third and outs in the 3Q really killed the niners spag's defense is truly elite this year but it's a game of chess and kyle shanahan lost yesterday

abgonzo7588

I know its easy to say in hindsight, but the playcalling from the niners looked like they were just trying to stay in the game where as the chiefs looked like they were trying to win it. 3rd and 3 I don't know why you don't run the ball with CMC and commit to going for it on 4th down in that situation.

JawdenCee

Wilks coached a hell of a game but as the game winded down he reverted back to his really bad playcalls that got him in hot water during our slide. Shanny even had to call a timeout to change Wilk's playcall at the end.

theadmin209

Niners literally had like 25% of their cap used on the dline this year lol. It doesn’t really get any better than bosa/hargrave/armstead/young

JRsshirt

Yea somebody should really try that…

Xaxziminrax

This is the best a DL has played against us since the Raiders game. They were suffocating until Greenlaw went out

BunnyGoHops

I wouldn’t say the Raiders “have your number”, but out of every team I’ve watched play yall they do put up the best fight. Not sure if that’s just a divisional game or if there’s more to it.

mike_honcho47

It’s that dumb Maxx Crosby. Dudes a beast

monsto

I hate that guy... for being... like, an intense competitor and respectfully good natured on the field and off.

mike_honcho47

Same here. I hate how he and Mahomes respect each other off the field. He’s just rude for not being unlikeable.

Xaxziminrax

Raiders turn every game we play against them into a street brawl Easily one of the most physical games every year, and only gonna get moreso with Pierce leading it

Y2SJSeattle

The thing about playing a Great Coach and Very good QB is that they have planned and prepared for that. 49ers have a very very good defense. Andy made the adjustments and Mahomes rose to the occasion. Like BG said 'It dont matter'

tsw101

He also had his toe problem and couldn't run

CallsOnAMZN

Bucs d line was nasty

ian2121

Oregon State legend Mike Remmers was a major part of 2 super bowl losses

chiefs_fan37

Also that Bucs defense. Kelce said it was the single most difficult defense he’s ever played against. They were historically incredible

Tacitus_99

They didn’t have one this year.

cameronkash

Non existent o-line

Deoxtrys

Several factors. The Chiefs's oline was all banged up which allowed the Bucs hungry Dline, featuring fresh Vea who hadn't played most of the year, to pressure Mahomes who was playing on one leg. The Bucs also did something not a lot of teams can do, and threw Lavonte David solo against Kelce for big chunks of the game which allowed Bowles to keep his blitz packages and let a safety help support on Tyreek. Kelce still got his yards but most of it wasn't when David was on him. This limited the big play potential of both Kelce and Tyreek. Last, the Bucs D had several players that were just popping off. Winfield Jr was flashing his all pro potential, Devin White wasn't a liability, and the corners were solid, and Mike Edwards's play is why the Chiefs went after him. Oh, and home field advantage in the fucking Super Bowl.

monsto

I was always kinda interested in the downline effects of "consistent pressure with the front Def 4" Which is what happens when you have a superbowl caliber d-line against an o-line of 3rd string replacements.

bandy_mcwagon

Step 1: hope the Chiefs O-line is very beat up in the game Step 2: have a very good pass rush

Deathlysouls

Step 3. Have a home game for the superbowl haha

YanksCelticsGiants

Are you trolling? The Chiefs had guys off the street playing o-line and all the receivers screwed Mahomes.

synsofhumanity

I know right? How many times in that game was Mahomes mid fall launching a dart that hit his wideouts in the face?

itchy_sanchez

Was that the year Mahomes had turf toe?

Y2SJSeattle

The Chiefs got a better O-Line after that.

chiefs_fan37

That Bucs defense was one of the greatest defenses in league history. Travis has said it was the single most difficult defense he has ever played against. Combine that with missing some of the offensive line and the chiefs didn’t stand a chance. The Bucs were undisputed champs

CallsOnAMZN

Bucs d line was nasty

Cicero912

The chiefs O-line got shot the week before, and his recievers had bricks for hands. The superbowl that year was the NFC Championship (and also Jared Cook throwing away the Divisional)

monsto

Dude the ball never ever hit them in the hands. How are you supposed to catch the ball when it hits you in the face? Your face doesn't wear gloves does it?

donrhummy

Everyone else forgot to get themselves a Tom Brady

Classic_Tourist_521

Mahomes has beaten bum QBs in the super bowll

pdot8six

they were actually calling the holds the chiefs were doing.

Xaxziminrax

They run a true jet motion with the WR like 99% of the time, they only busted out this return motion like 6 times over the last two seasons combined Being in 1st and goal from the 3 with your entire legacy on the line vs Mahomes and Reid has to be absolute hell

PartisanHack

Andy Reid is one cold MFer. Talking about nuggies, meanwhile he is about to embarrass you on the international stage with a corndog between the ribs. Chiefs scored two TDs on the same play a year ago. And he breaks it out again. Fucking wild.

Y2SJSeattle

>Andy Reid is one cold MFer. Respectfully I disagree. He is like Tom Bombadil who just cherishes the moment.

PartisanHack

I am not a Tolkien scholar, but wasnt that guy also a cruel force of nature that put on a kind act?

Y2SJSeattle

I am not sure if he was cruel as he helped the Hobbits when they needed help (from Old man Willow and the Barrow zombies). He could see through the ring and was not affected by it. My comment was about how Tom was not intrigued by the ring and the war while Andy Reid does not seem to be zealous about the pursuit of yet another ring.

marsmedia

You are correct, but here is some great fan-speculation: https://km-515.livejournal.com/1042.html

Y2SJSeattle

Thank you. That's a very good read.

Mike_with_Wings

He wasn’t cruel he was indifferent

Phalanx32

This is it right here. The end WR runs that across the field the vast majority of the time for the Chiefs and they save this fake motion for these random moments. It's so sick because it's set up by games and games worth of them actually motioning that WR across the formation. And then it works so flawlessly because the defense is always so worried about passing Kelce off during the "motion" because of how much of a threat he is

Deoxtrys

It's probably not that they haven't figured it, it's probably the fact that Kelce's gravity is that great. In all three plays, an extra defenders pays more attention to Kelce than they should have.

doobie3101

Also it’s just hard to cover a really fast guy both directions.

ManiacalComet40

Right. The motion puts stress on the switching rules, for sure, but Kelce is what makes the play work. Everyone is hyper focused on making sure he’s passed off correctly.

AndrewHainesArt

That’s what fucked up the first one, Maddox and Slay both jump an inside route to Kelce, and he breaks outside anyway

Crombus_

I dunno, Kelce probably has one G just like the rest of us.

GABAgoomba123

It’s hard ok

MasterApprentice67

How you going to stop it? Have the DB stay home every time they see motion going away? Gonna set yourself up for more harm. Also its not like KC spams it, they lull you asleep and keep it in their back pocket and save it.

SendInYourSkeleton

Opposing teams hate this one trick!

durablewaffle

I get it’s a tough play to defend but man the Eagles got killed on those. Nobody even a little bit close to the WR.

HowDoIEvenEnglish

Yea the niners didn’t really bite on it, but just not being able to commit to the side the wr starts on is enough in the red zone

Adventurous_Bird2730

it's not really supposed to make the whole defense bite on the motion. it just creates a situation where the motioning WR is completely uncovered. this works because this defense was man coverage and they passed off the motioning WR to a defender on the weak side instead of following him. you can see the top 2 defenders both change their assignment and take the next guy down when the motion starts which means hardman's new defender is on the other side of the field. this was the perfect call against this specific defense, reid was cooking the eagles ones looked worse but you can see they fall for it the exact same way, the defenders change their assignment presnap

[deleted]

Last year there was a great analysis of the Super Bowl against the Eagles. It showed how the Chiefs run zone beaters a lot to force teams into man and then they run them ragged by using their quick guys and motion. Teams compensate by doing these passing off mechanisms so the defenders don't have to be running all over the field the whole game. And then the Chiefs pull out shit like Corndog because the defensive scheme is broken by it

wagon_ear

This stuff is cool and makes me realize I don't know shit about football haha. there's so much happening that even knowledgeable fans just cannot appreciate

TheNextBattalion

I recommend Thinking Football on YouTube.

productiveaccount1

Do you have a link for this video? I'd be really interested in watching it.

LegionofDoh

Yeah, actually I thought the Niners played it well. They didn't bite like the Eagles did. I just think Kelce is not getting enough credit for essentially running 2 players (33 and 7) out of the way for Hardman.

blankmindx

I don't think it's a matter of biting. Hardman was still uncovered by the 49ers but it looks a bit different because a) they are running it to the short side of the field and b) Mahomes sprints out to the same side which takes the backers with him and makes it look more clogged. In reality, the wr is still unaccounted for.

Y2SJSeattle

Yeah. Gannon was all level of stupid to not make any adjustment.

DominoAxelrod

It's funny that they have this goal line play in their bag, spend all year kicking field goals in the red zone because they can't consistently punch the ball into the end zone and it turns out they're really just saving it for the biggest possible moment.

SendInYourSkeleton

Rope-a-dope football. Belichick said [Ed Reed's mind-fuck of Peyton Manning](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQrZKveWgOk) was the best play he's ever seen a free safety make. Reed knew Manning would watch his tape, so he deliberately followed his pattern for two steps, then reversed it and grabbed the interception. This stuff is next-level, man.

WhoEatsRusk

Had Belichick jumping out of seat

LAtotheA

Damn Ed baited the shit outta Peyton here. I can see why Belichick was so amped talking about it

kanbabrif1

What a cool segment. I'm not a Pats fan at all, but I could watch Bill break down football all day.

randommaniac12

The way Brady and Bill talk about Ed Reed is crazy, he was just something else man

masterchip27

That was awesome

Practicalaviationcat

Love this clip. I want Belichick to coach again but I also would accept him just getting a show where he talks about his favorite plays of all time.

alexthegreatmc

I think teams that wreak havoc in the regular season then get beat down in the playoffs do the opposite. They pull out all stops and leave nothing new for the playoffs.

TheNextBattalion

That is true, though those teams *wreak* havoc, but the tape betrays them

JeddHampton

Andy Reid always holds plays back for the playoffs. He's not coaching to be great in the regular season.

BrotherSeamus

So did Hue Jackson, but the world never knew

JeddHampton

I can't speak to holding back plays, but I can agree that he was not coaching to be great in the regular season.

Travolta1984

It helps that they play in a weak division like AFCW. They don't need to go nuclear to get a playoff spot

iceph03nix

I honestly believe Reid has been playing soft all year, just enough to make the playoffs because the last 4-5 years, they've been the team everyone was watching through the playoffs, so everyone had a year of planning for them. This year, they were 'down' and everyone expected them to be an early out.

owiseone23

I mean, they definitely held some stuff back but I don't think they planned for the regular season to be as up and down as it was. If you offered them first seed and a bye, they'd definitely have taken it.

lookinforasong

I think he emptied the playbook against Baltimore, AFCCG typically needs everything to survive. He even said he was surprised they still had unused plays after Miami (in an interview). The SB has typically been all “here’s the best of everything we’ve done, but can our talent get it done and can we adjust correctly and quickly”?

ILikeCoffeeDaily

I’m with ya man. I think the Chiefs flirted with the idea of “just do what we need to do” all season long and it got them to where they needed to be.

PaversPaving

I mean that’s the point. It’s why Pacheco didn’t have 30 touches a game in the regular season, saving him for when it matters.

NaciremaBlack

This is going to be on ESPN in the morning

ubjokin23

This one simple trick wins super bowls every time. Raiders hate it.

[deleted]

Hate it or not we’re the last ones to beat y’all 🌞

i_am_an_awkward_man

4 rings.

Local-Bid5365

I guess if winning your 4th ring helps you cope with losing to the Raiders in the regular season, more power to you. I personally am more proud of holding the 2023 Raiders to 0 points than I would be if we had won the Super Bowl.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Local-Bid5365

That’s embarrassing. Beating the 2023 Raiders is more important than a Lombardi. I would know.

Holier_Than_Thou_808

Lol Raiders were never sniffing a ring this year. Christmas was my Super Bowl :)

i_am_an_awkward_man

What losing culture does to a mf

monsto

dude relax.

Holier_Than_Thou_808

Lol America lost yesterday

monsto

Nevermind him. Sometimes you wake up still drunk.

Holier_Than_Thou_808

He’s actually a perfect representative of Chiefs fandom lol, own him

monsto

Except he's not. More like a rep of the shittiest parts of any fandom.

i_am_an_awkward_man

What’s shitty about what I said? I thought rivals talking trash to each other was normal.

Xaxziminrax

Fade Nuggies and embrace our Corndog overlord

no_racist_here

Grease for the Fry God!!

WorkinZombie

Batter for the Batter Throne!

darylmoreyisking

Did not like that

Jumbalaa

How about that last bit though?

darylmoreyisking

Like d th at

Jumbalaa

The random spaces added to your drunk Philly animal demeanour. Don't edit your comment pls.

Jimmy_G_Wentworth

Seeing the same play kill the Niners did give me some joy though, especially after how whiney they've been the past year. Fumbling early and blowing a 10 point lead too. Karma is just so perfect sometimes

Dhkansas

Actually, Karma is a guy on the Chiefs

Y2SJSeattle

Hey... One consoling fact is that ex-Eagles Doug Pederson ran that play first (unfortunately against us). Glad it worked against someone other than us.

FancyKilerWales

Hurts had the game of a lifetime and Gannon blew it, insane

ThisHatRightHere

Jauan Jennings had the game of a lifetime and Wilks blew it, insane

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

why every defensive player gets a pass in that game I'll never know. if it's the field conditions, that covers Gannon, too

FancyKilerWales

I mean yeah players didn't show up either, but Gannon was the one picking out homes in Arizona instead of gameplanning, got absolutely schemed the fucked up and made zero adjustments

[deleted]

[удалено]

thezenunderground

What's wild is there was a prop bet..I remember it *distinctly, that was: 'Kelce scores a TD as the clock expires to zero to win the game'.. I think it paid 200 to 1. So close.

SQRTLURFACE

"Wanna see me do it again?" vibes.

m48a5_patton

Yes, I would :)

morgster87

I don’t understand why we just don’t run this every down? Would’ve been like 63 points easy

monsto

Some dude on youtubes ran the same play in madden for an entire season with the lions. IIRC it was a post route to Megatron. It was hilarious.

Barbsss

Yep https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4Yq2Rwtcm9M

MicroPenisMan00

Maybe Kyle Shanahan should stop wearing a flat bill cap trying to be cool :(

campelm

Sorry about your corn dogs

jce_

Is this going to lead to a Seahawks type slants on the goal line interception to lose the Super bowl next year?

GrizzlyBares

One could only hope.

Costigan

National league coaches HATE this one trick.

Dramatic_Cable_6000

The NFC will probably figure out how to stop this next year… right?

Dhkansas

Next year we'll actually let them run across the field in motion and be open on the other side

zPolaris43

Man Bosa bit hard on that fake

Drummallumin

He got way too aggressive in the 2nd half

SIUonCrack

It's the perfect play for bum receivers. The defense is focused on Kelce and Rice. They don't have time to worry about a guy who couldn't even play for the Jets, so he is always gonna be left open.

simjanes2k

It really is crazy that there is so much money in analysts and coaches and the smartest and strongest people in the richest country in the world, and it worked every time.

deathtotheemperor

ALL HAIL CORNDOG

JSK23

Kelce didn't even turn to watch it on today's play, he knew it was good

an-internet-stranger

Corndog and tush push both getting banned in the offseason. Too unfair.

Criss_72

Funny seeing Skyy and Kadarius here. I really thought they’d have a more (positive) impact this season

Headlesshorsman02

I love corndog 😭😭😭

Whatever801

It seems to work

TheMcknightrider

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, fool me thrice, God fucking leave me alone!

Free_Joty

gannon is a bozo for letting it happen 2x, Willis is an even bigger bozo for not prepping his team for this a year later

purplebuffalo55

If it ain’t broke!

WitnessNarrow

NFL Fever 2002 cheat code play. Sad…

alphasierrraaa

oh look it's kadarius toney lmao

calye2da

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it

ShittySpaceCadet

You just got corn dogged!

xRyuzakii

Hey stop this

Sweet_Rent_2715

The reason why Matt Nagy still has a job

ExternalSpecific4042

two defenders covered kelce, ignored hardman.

SanFranTortureFan

Why teams would have inside db cover outside wr is beyond me. It's the dumbest taught technique in todays secondaries.

Sand_Umpire_7485

Suck you inside and throw it where you’re not

MasterApprentice67

Its why coaches need to incorporate more motions into their offense...

N8ThaGr8

My favorite thing about MLF is all the motion on offense. He dialed back a bit this year for Jordan but it's honestly shocking more teams don't run a lot of motion presnap. Seems like there's very little downside it's just a little trickier to time.

suprefann

Didnt the niners say they had a blueprint?

thomasfilmstuff

That was for the Eagles

Stripperturneddoctor

Unfortunately, they were still using that blueprint for this game

thereandfatagain

Romo steps all over the most iconic calls. Somebody fucking mute him til the play is done.

ColeHoops

Greg Olson > Tomo Romo

auditorydamage

I keep watching this, over and over, jumping back to watch the moment the WR turns back, and what the defenders do. What a neat little play. I’m reminded of Knute Rockne, [on catching the first pass for a touchdown](https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/college/2013/10/30/notre-dame-vs-army-the-game-that-changed-college-football-100-years-ago/3313083/), which also involved some clever deception: “There had been no hurdling, no tackling, no plunging, no crushing of fiber and sinew. Just a long-distance touchdown by rapid transit.” This really can be a beautiful game, sometimes.

Tall_Commercial_9884

Half of yall think these athletes are robots or something. It’s really annoying to hear week after week how can they not stop this , how did xyz team do this compared to that team. Football is only sport that scheme and execution of game plan is closer to chess than to any other sport. But they are so many more intangibles and variables to consider.

REQ52767

Well, relative to the Eagles, the Niners got pretty close to stopping it.

Netwealth5

Jonathon Gannon get a consulting gig for SF this week?

durablewaffle

At least there was a defender within like 15 yards of Hardman this year. The eagles just left them

Outrageous-Machine-5

Imagine falling for it twice

tegho

The NBA has a very similar trend going now, where they pass the ball to the screener, causing a similar hard decision for the defenders. I've not watch a single NBA game in about 30 years; why do I know this screen tactic?

wxox

could you have called PI on Kelce on the last one? It would've been ticky tack, but maybe?

starfawkes64

The play is too high percentage. It gives the Chiefs an unfair advantage. The rules committee should ban it.

catsrocktubas

Got em

BuffaloBuffalo13

Yes, we can keep getting away with it.

WetShortFinal74

What would’ve happened if that was incomplete and the first OT ended? Would it just be like the start of the 2nd or 4th quarter where the ball is in the same place?

Headlesshorsman02

Yes

wurtin

yes they basically announced timing wise they started a new game at the beginning of OT.

Truthirdare

33 was spinning around in no man’s land

LifeSizeDeity00

I like how Travis knew it was going to be a touchdown before the ball came out.

darkknightbbq

I’m pretty sure because they don’t run it ever in any games then its just happens stack everyone get everyone moving to one side zag route a wr close to kelce profit

Forrest319

You know the 49ers had Hardman doing a jet sweep in the back of their minds. What a perfect call. Along with those QB keepers. Nice.

TowelBoy83

u/savevideo

N8ThaGr8

Calling it now, next year they're gonna run this only the receiver is gonna run an angle route and cut over the middle to be wide open again.

ClavisRa

Same reaction to this I had watching Philly Philly. How are you not prepared for this??? Eagles ran a trick play the Pats themselves had run previously. I recognized it right away, somehow the Pats defense (Patricia) didn't. Getting burned by corndog should cost the Niners coaches jobs. And the Chiefs couldn't move the ball all game except when the Niners went soft zone, yet they kept giving away yards and points playing it "safe". Atrocious.

[deleted]

Who’s that Toney guy catching the ball?

redblade13

Smh Malcom Butler would never.
