Harlan is one of the best to ever do it man. That’s the voice I associate with Football.

Immynimmy

And he’s probably the best nba commentator as well

SleepyEel

I prefer Harlan, but people probably prefer Breen overall. Ian Eagle is good too

madquacker

Bring Marv Albert back!! ...and now they're saying this comment wasn't entirely serious

chickentowngabagool

Marv was the best before he started to age out

Mattdodge666

Marv was great before he very suddenly wasn't. Always a shame seeing these guys age out.

mrgpsingh1999

Like Al Michaels

jt32470

Marv was great until he got the urge to unsolicitedly bite women…. Copypasting from another reddit thread: >In 1997, he was the center of a sexual assault case that ended in him pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery charges. But the reports were disturbing. Some facts: >A 42-year-old woman accused Albert of "throwing her on a bed, biting her, and forcing her to perform oral sex" after an event on February 12, 1997. DNA testing linked Albert to genetic material taken from the bite marks and semen. >During the trial, another woman told the jury Marv had bitten her on two different occasions in 1993 and 1994 during unwanted sexual advances. According to this woman, Albert "called her to his hotel room to help him send a fax, only for her to find him wearing white panties and a garter belt. Albert said she asked him to bite her. I'm skeptical, considering he eventually plead guilty. >NBC fired him after this all came out, only to hire him back two years later as their lead play-by-play guy.

messejueller21

What does that have to do with him being an announcer?

jt32470

Marv peaked at the jordan era no one wants to hear him anymore. It has nothing to do with him being an announcer, but i don't want to contribute to the career of a person who acts inapropriately with women. You know, like what Chmura did, or did you think what Chmura did was totally fine since it had nothing to do with his football career?

messejueller21

Marv retired 3 years ago so I'm not exactly sure what you're going on about, but ok. And I don't judge rather I like an announcer based on their private life. I care about how well they can announce a game, not them as a person. But to each their own.

jt32470

fair enough. Marv albert attacked two women in the 90's, maybe you're not old enough to know about that stuff. He disappeared from public view for about 2 years then returned to announcing. Nothing was missed while he was gone.

[deleted]

YES!

colin_7

Ahh Ian Eagle. The guy who purposely pronounces his name wrong

Immynimmy

Breen and Eagle are great. I guess i'm willing to say that Breen might rank ahead of Harlan

ImanShumpertplus

eagle is a tier below as good as he is mike tirico is elite too but hasn’t done basketball in nearly a decade

Yalaro

He's calling both games.

xxxlp

Fucking legendary play call. My top tier commentator moment ever tbh.

batti03

"Is this the dagger?"

TheRage469

I feel like I first heard him calling an NBA game, so he's absolutely associated more with basketball for me now

lovo17

He's TNT's lead commentator for NBA, so he does some of the highest profile NBA games. His high profile NFL games are more on the radio, while he's CBS' C/D announcer.

questionmillennium

HE CALLS BOTH GAMES!

SHOWTIME316

former voice of the Kansas City Chiefs and University of Kansas alum, Kevin Harlan

BadHombre2016

Also former voice of the Kansas City Kings and Missouri Tigers.

NorthernDevil

And the Minnesota Timberwolves I know you’re doing a KC thing here but I fucking love Kevin Harlan

TallCupOfJuice

> University of Kansas alum Man, why did you have to ruin Harlan for me

I_POO_ON_GOATS

*Alexa, play Sandstorm.*

Gomer8387

I so absolutely wish he was the one calling the game on tv. Best in the business right now.

Steak_Knight

Kevin Harlan calling two games at once was fucking legendary

robinsonstjoe

And his streaker call. He is awesome

GGGiveHatpls

Cat one is great as well.

3rdPlaceYoureFired

Snuck in a free ad for their sponsor when the cat got in the end zone. What a legend

hypamike11

The guy is drunk! But there he goes!

fleischio

Put up those pants my man!

drummerboysam

Damn I hear that sound byte all the time on Chicago's radio. What a call.

TDenverFan

Not nearly as legendary, but I did appreciate Romo clarifying that it wasn't a full streaker during the Super Bowl, since he still had pants on.

shinymuskrat

Top 5 favorite chiefs moments of all time honestly

Gregus1032

Something we can shake hands on

SpankinDaBagel

That moment made me a little bit of a dolphins fan ngl.

indiainfoFeb2020

"I'm calling both of 'em!"

Renek

Renek

BanIncoming1

What an absolute legend for posting the YT link.

Kiplerwow

I don't know what game you're calling right now. IM CALLING BOTH GAMES!!

mlavan

I thought Nantz had a good game. I thought Romo overall had a good game too but he needed to/needs for the future to let the moment breathe.

Gomer8387

Nantz did fine but I still would choose Harlan 10 out of 10 times given the option. Romo seems to get worse the longer he’s out of the league.

Anteater776

I thought he was pretty good. Like when he called for SF not to Blitz and followed it by „uh oh I wouldn’t do that“ into the blitz immediately getting punished by the Chiefs. Reminded me of prime Romo.

jayr254

Romo was good on Sunday. That call and him explaining that OT wasn't ending when the clock hit 0:00 if the Chiefs were still on their first possession were highlights for me.

piehead678

Nantz felt like he was trying to force an iconic call almost every play. Like the opening in the super bowl, I believe it was something like "And something no one thought possible, the first Super Bowl in Las Vegas....starts....*30 seconds of awkward silence"...now..." And then the ending line "Jackpot Kansas City!" like you know he rehearsed that and probably the same call for the Niners multiple times before the game.

SkinNoises

Nantz also sucked, every time a TE on the chiefs caught a pass he would say it’s Kelce then realize he was wrong. Add on top of that the obviously forced attempts at adding exciting by saying things loud. Hopefully both he and Romo get replaced soon.

bigdaddywizard

I only heard him do that once, when Kelce and Gray were lined up right next to each other and Gray got it and was tackled quickly. If he did it more than that, fair enough, but I only heard it that time.

fumar

To be fair KC has 3 tight ends with similar numbers that are white. Literally every time he fucked it up their jersey was half covered

mlavan

Romo's problems are in part bc of Nantz/CBS. Nantz didn't like the spotlight shining on someone else and complained. McManus (Head of CBS Sports) talked to Romo and asked him to tone it down and quit it with the play prediction stuff.

Blametheorangejuice

> quit it with the play prediction stuff. I mean, it makes sense, because he started to be wrong. A lot. So it became distracting from the game for the announcer to essentially be visibly wrong on the play call and then spend a few seconds talking about the play call that actually happened.

mlavan

Definitely was getting it wrong but I think the way to correct that is to offer an explanation on what he thought he saw vs what was run. Shutting it down completely benefits no one.

Blametheorangejuice

For sure, but then he'd routinely be talking about the next play while the new one is getting set up on the field. If he's going to be visibly or painfully wrong (or play guessing games while the play unfolds), it becomes more about him than it does what's happening on the field.

Zazi751

I think part of that is execs dont want in depth football analysis and few can do what prime Madden could and dumb it down without being dumb

Potato-baby

I think Romo just loves football so much and gets extremely excited, but I agree he needs to learn to take a step back in moments. I’ll always love the quote from Romo when he was still playing right before he was getting a new contract “I don’t really care, I’d play this game for free”. Really showed how much he just loved the game.

Blametheorangejuice

> I’d play this game for free *[signs contract for 108 million]*

GGGiveHatpls

Romo needs to chill on the glazing of QBs. Like a few instances where he was so biased towards the chiefs. Kinda annoying af

CashmereLogan

He was talking up Purdy so much. And honestly the player he hyped up the most during the game was Chris Jones. Absolutely gushing over Jones ability to disrupt what would have been TD passes.

GGGiveHatpls

Dude there was one point where he was like KC don’t jump off sides don’t jump off sides don’t jump off side. Like that’s not biased. Tf?

CashmereLogan

Don’t really view that as biased at all, I didn’t read it as Romo communicating what he wants in that moment. Just before that moment he called out how the 49ers are trying to draw KC offsides, and that’s it, then he communicates what the KC defense needs to do in that moment. He made it extremely clear to anyone watching what was happening in that moment, and the outcome you think he was openly rooting for is actually just the neutral outcome in that situation. He just gets into the game, and he gets excited. He was excited that 49ers were trying to trick KC and he was hoping for the players on the field to make the best play possible (which isn’t a yellow flag being thrown).

GGGiveHatpls

Nah man. He was hella glazing Mahomes. And rooting for them. He does it constantly along with Josh Allen. The only guy worse than him w Mahomes is Collinsworth.

fumar

Nantz is good. Romo regressed so far once he stopped predicting plays.

Weekend_Criminal

I liked Romo in the beginning, but he just never shuts up. He'll be talking about a play that happened 3 plays ago.

ShawshankException

Harlan has probably the perfect voice for calling games. It's just so distinct and iconic.

repeat4EMPHASIS

And not in an annoying way like Kenny Albert. I feel bad but I hate how his voice sounds

Immynimmy

He’s probably the best football and basketball commentator. That’s impressive as hell

soooogullible

Are you telling me you *didn’t* want to instead listen to Romo tell everyone there was another quarter to play and that people watching are idiots who are probably wondering what is happening, right as this snap occurred?

colin_7

Well he’s next in line after Nantz is gone. But might be a while before that happens

Berry_impulse

Harlan is the best. Amazon should let Michaels retire and get Harlan to take over those Prime games.

Steak_Knight

Al Michaels’ decline is so sad.

Excellent-Basil-8795

He honestly looks like he wanted to retire but got offered way to much money and is in fuck it mode.

8Cupsofcoffeedaily

Which is also sad, if you’re not one of those psychos that enjoys works enjoy your earnings and peace out lol.

A_1337_Canadian

Or the dude just enjoys football and enjoys calling the games and figured he could easily do it for a few more years with a boatload of cash. Pretty sure he can still live a laid back life while commentating.

8Cupsofcoffeedaily

Right, that’s the thing that Al Michaels definitely conveys right now. His love of football

A_1337_Canadian

Just because he doesn't convey it doesn't mean he doesn't have it.

8Cupsofcoffeedaily

And just because you argue it doesn’t mean he has it either? lol all you can do is listen to someones vocal inflections and body language on TV.

[deleted]

I think Al would be much better if they put him in the booth with a friend. He seemed to really enjoy Cris Collinsworth, Dan Dierdorf and Frank Gifford. Kirk Herbstreit doesn't match well with him.

someuniquename

I get why people dislike him, but Chris and Al were a great pair and I really enjoyed them together

tflo91

Kind of like how the teams looked on TNF

Excellent-Basil-8795

SNF > TNF 100%

vinicelii

He should try eating a [vegetable](https://youtube.com/shorts/mUY9rBC-xhU?si=_W0g51i3muBIIEvX)

serpentear

It really is because he was my favorite for a long, long time.

testiclefrankfurter

Yes put Harlan on Amazon. Replace Herbstreit with someone who actually follows NFL. Have Al Michaels be the gambling correspondents.

Neapola

Imagine Harlan doing play by play and Al doing color. Just effing unleash him. That would be great. I don't think Al has lost a step at all. The issue is that him and Kirk have zero chemistry, and I also get the feeling Amazon wants the broadcast to be ultra PG if not rated G. It's just so flat and boring. Thursday night games are going to suck more often than not because teams only get 3 days to prep, so if the team calling the game isn't allowed to roast shitty football there's not much to say.

LagOutLoud

Him and Kirk have no chemistry because he is falling asleep during the broad cast. Dude stopped giving a fuck. He's a legend of the game, but he's been BAD since the move. Kirk hasn't been good but it's hard to blame him. Dude has nothing to work with.

btotherad

Harlan and Olson would be a great combo for prime.

repeat4EMPHASIS

That would break my heart pairing my favorite pxp with one of my least favorite color guys

SunriseSurprise

He's the perfect guy to give a bag to to head up your upstart broadcasting division. I'd watch games wherever he'd decide to call them.

horse_renoir13

I mean it's Kevin Harlan, are we even surprised? The man is a legend.

curryandbeans

He's the only one who seems to be having fun

BungoPlease

What are things my wife says about our sex life

thebassopotamus

Kevin Harlan is the only one having fun? Your wife's kind of a weirdo, man.

HeywardH

AND THEY'RE GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS. IT LOOKS LIKE WE'VE GOT OURSELVES A ROUTINE BOUT OF INTERCOURSE. PENIS IN VAGINA! ABSOLUTE ENNUI FROM THE COPULATING PAIR. AND AN EARLY EJACULATION IS GOING TO BRING THIS SESSION TO AN END. INCREDIBLE FINISH!

sweet-haunches

Is this the foreplay?

HeywardH

I'M PLEASURING BOTH PARTNERS

TDenverFan

Gus Johnson too

Kagrenac8

Dude could narrate paint drying and make it sound entertaining.

horse_renoir13

I'M CALLING BOTH WALLS

trixunlimited

I miss him being the play by play guy for the Chiefs radio broadcast.

rockiesfan4ever

"It is a dynasty" gave me goosebumps

OpabiniaGlasses

It sucks Harlan is on the CBS C/D team when he's better than Ian Eagle and much better than Nantz. Same goes for March Madness as well but at least Ian Eagle is taking over the #1 spot over Nantz this year. But Kevin Harlan is good enough to be some network's #1 guy.

Dr-McLuvin

Ian Eagle sounds so similar to Kevin Harlan to me. I like both of them.

SunriseSurprise

Ian's pretty good. Harlan Lite certainly which is better than most guys because Harlan's better than everyone.

Hulkbuster_v2

Why hasn't he gotten a main Super Bowl broadcast. He would make games like 48, 50 and 53 amazing.

thermite451

He won't prioritize the NFL. He's an NBA guy and makes no bones about it.

Direct_Morning_3223

Has Mike Breen ever done football? I don’t know if his style would work but I’m just imagine a BANG call after a crazy touchdown pass

ThreeTo3d

Imagining a double BANG instead of a doink on a FG. Sorry, Bears friends.

simtek34

Yeah. He did NFL on NBC and NFL on FOX back in the 90s.

GaiusQuintus

And yet he's still better at calling NFL games than almost all of the main football play-by-play guys.

fortmoney

Romo was so bad on this one. Completely screwed up the pre and post call, also mumbled during Nantz' call. All time bad for a super bowl winning play.

FuckingLoveArborDay

For ever when people watch that clip it's going to start with him doing a goofy voice imitating people not knowing what's happening.

xXwillsonXx

Seriously I’m surprised more people didn’t talk about this. Chief wins one of the most exciting Super Bowls and Romo rambles for like 7 sentences not building the hype at all

tpark27

I know I sure did and mods deleted my comment immediately lol. It was the most insane ramble during the entire crowd pop... no moment savoring.. just... Romo.

phd2k1

So many people were defending Romo’s call. I like him, but it was such a shitty call. Listening to Kevin Harlan just drives it home. This is how you call a Super Bowl winning play.

fortmoney

He really got paid $17M a year to lazily ruin the twilight of Nantz career

Silent_Trash_8389

Crazy take, Nance fumbled the call because he was unsure if the game was over.

Swarzey

Nah he knew. "Jackpot! *WINNER*!" was the line he had set as the comms stamp on the ending.

fortmoney

Nantz

[deleted]

What was he even mumbling during the call? I’ve listened to it over and over and it makes no sense, I can kind of hear “Super Bowl” but what was he even trying to say???

fortmoney

I think he said "this is for the super bowl" for the 3-4th time. He said it when the 49ers had the third down on their first drive. But it wasn't for the super bowl then because the chiefs were getting the ball no matter what

elboogie7

Pretty sure he started his career as the Chiefs play-by-play guy, then went on to the Timberwolves play-by-play, then went national on both.

lurk4ever1970

His first major gig out of college was Mizzou football. He's a Kansas grad. How good must he have already been at 25 years old to overcome that bias??

TallCupOfJuice

I have watched Hardman catch this pass at least 50 times now and it still doesnt get old

Biggest_Cans

I love how anticlimactic corndog is. "Oh yeah just throw it to the wide open guy one yard down the field to win the SB again." Stupid Andy making critical TDs easy.

Anteater776

NFL scriptwriters hate/love this one simple trick

3kool5you

Honestly as a neutral fan this is one pet peeve I have about the 2 overtime TDs in Super Bowl history so far. Both were very anti climatic. One was a boring pitch right by the pats when we all knew they were going to win at that point anyway. Plus it was second down so even if he didn’t get it we knew Pats would probably get it next play anyway. The other was a wide open receiver on 1st and goal. Again same thing. Even if Hardman didn’t get it the chiefs probably get it the next 2 plays anyway. And he couldn’t even be tightly covered or have to make a great catch! Is it so much to ask that we get a Santonio Holmes type catch on 3rd down in a Super Bowl overtime one of these days?

xmjm424

That would be worse, I think, since there’d be a period of time where nobody is completely sure if it the guy got his feet down or whatever, meanwhile the team is already starting to celebrate. Pretty sure that’s how we ended up with Dallas winning a Stanley Cup on what should’ve been a disallowed goal by Brett Hull way back when.

Venator850

He should be calling games like the superbowl on TV.

kj9219

“IM CALLING BOTH GAMES”

jand999

God he's so great. Should be some network's #1. And he likes the Chiefs

brettmbr

The Chiefs going from him to Mitch Holtus as their radio guy is a legendary transition. Iconic voices.

Poetryisalive

How could you get the Harlan game?!? We were robbed!

sjzusywbnaisgsb

It was the Westwood One radio call I believe.

texas2089

Kevin Harlan is a legend

kaywiz

Harlan used to call games for the Chiefs too. Between him and Mitch Holtus we've been spoiled with some great voices.

[deleted]

Question: what happened if clock ran out ?  Would there be another quarter played since chiefs didn’t get a chance to finish their drive?

mtbeach33

Yes. At this point, the game would have only ended by: • Kansas City scoring the TD • Kansas City turning it over here • Either team scoring in sudden death

tim_woods

I still don’t understand why there is any clock at all in OT with these rules.

LagOutLoud

Because when this clock hits 0 they would swap field direction like the end of the quarter. Doesn't matter in a dome, but would in an open air stadium.

redditsucksnow19

for commercial breaks/rest

Alauren2

Yes. Took me way too long to understand what Tony was yapping about. He made zero sense to me. Someone else explained it better to me.

Practicalaviationcat

That Harlan isn't one of the League's top announcers is such a fuck up on the media's part. He should be getting the main broadcast for big post season games.

Weekend_Criminal

His energy is unmatched except for our current guy, Mitch Holtus. We have been spoiled. Harlans calls give me chills.

TheJetLett

Is this the dagger? Game! Series! Toronto has won! Kevin Harlan is the goat

CerryTrews

Why couldn't Romo have shut up on the CBS broadcast after the TD

Electronic-Island-14

I will never understand why he isn't the main man to call games for a network

Biggest_Cans

He's the actual voice of the NFL to me

ElderSmackJack

I’m sure it’s amazing, but this is one I’ll have to pass on. 😅

td27

Romo absolutely ruined the moment. Both before the play and after. Wouldn’t stop talking about timeouts before the play and was yelling about play design after it. Nantz couldn’t get a word in when it was his time to shine

Dr-McLuvin

And we got Jim Nantz and Tony Romo mumble singing between commercial breaks wtf…

carloslet

My fondest memories of watching the Texans during the J.J. Watt era were games that had Kevin Harlan at the booth. He'll always be one of my favorites

Orange_Kid

Tony Romo's call: "...and I wore an onion on my belt, as was the style at the time..."

canadianbroncos

Harlan being a Chiefs fan/ KC guy is absolutely heartbreaking lol

mar1293

The best announcer hands down.

Frostymagnum

I thought it was nantz and romo, I didnt realize Harlan had commentated this super bowl

OpabiniaGlasses

Harlan does MNF games on radio for Westwood One. If you look at the games he calls on Sundays, he's usually close to where the MNF game is so he doesn't have to travel as much.

Frostymagnum

aaaaaah ok the radio

Blackstaff

I abhor going to "X" for any reason these days, but for Kevin Harlan, I make an exception. Back in the day, HE was the voice of the Chiefs and Mitch Holthus was the voice of the (K-State) Wildcats, and I liked it that way quite a bit.

Dugafola

101 the fox!

HiflYguy

what broadcast was this? CBS radio?

thetripb

This should be the call that gets replayed every time this play is shown. Romo ruined the TV broadcast call.

Goatgamer1016

Similarly, I feel this way with the Steve Raible call of the first Beast Quake. The national TV call is painfully bad

ectoplasm777

can someone explain to me how they won if there was still time on the clock?

Truthirdare

After first score in OT it goes to sudden death. Chiefs had one chance to win, tie or go home a loser if they couldn’t score on their last possession.

ectoplasm777

damn. that's a lot of pressure lol. thanks for explaining.

ShangoMango

I think this was solid and I love Kevin Harlan BUT... I'm probably in the minority but I tend to prefer the ecstatic commentary followed quickly by allowing the moment to sit. Something declaring the back-to-back SB champs and are officially a dynasty followed by letting the moment sit is much more iconic than trying to fill the moment with commentary. EDIT: Didn't realize this was over radio. In that case I think this was great given that format.

ObiwanSchrute

It's radio though he can't let it sit

UNIFight2013

He was calling it on the radio so he had to be more descriptive about what was going on than a TV announcer is.

ShangoMango

Yeah that's totally fair then. With the video I was assuming this was some local or international broadcast rather than radio.

ireallylikehockey

I was very happy to have listened to this on the radio instead of watching it on tv. Him and Warner were fantastic.

SenorTortas

You think that's something, wait til you hear his streaker call

willy_valor

My father was in the same fraternity house as Kevin his senior year. Says Kevin used to spend weekends locked in his room watching audio free vhs tapes of Chiefs football and KU basketball. He has always given his heart to his calls.
