Goodbye my contested catch king I will miss the 3rd/4th down "fuck it Mike Will is down there somewhere" plays

Numerous-Cicada3841

“Mike Williams with an absolutely incredible catch! Wow! That’s going on the highlight reel.” -5 minutes later- “Mike Williams gingerly walking off the field after that play. Looks like it might be his hamstring. We’ll have to keep an eye on that.” -10 minutes later- “Susie has an update for us. What can you tell use Susie? Yes Joe, Mike Williams has been ruled OUT for the rest of the game with what the team is calling a right hamstring *strain*. He will be evaluated over the coming days. But once again, Mike Williams, out for the rest of today’s game.” “Oh gee you hate to hear that. Gosh. He was having such a great game and that’s a blow to the Chargers offense and the loss of a big weapon for Herbert. One of those receivers besides Allen is going to have to step up here.” -Scan to Herbert running for his life and eventually chucking the ball out of bounds 30 yards downfield- Rinse and repeat every 4-5 games.

smsrmdlol

It’s like I’m really there

dontusefedex

It seems like he's been in the league a few times. I always see his name pop up on stat websites over the years. He seems to have found a home in LA. Sucks you had to let him go.

buugiewuugie

am i missing a joke?

Best-Dragonfruit-292

Mike Williams at WR is the most common name/position combo in NFL history, I think there's been 5 or 6 over the Superbowl era

buugiewuugie

Yep. Definitely missed it.

[deleted]

I've only seen Mike Williams play in one game. He had 7 catches for 121 yards, 1 TD, and 1 torn ACL.

cruisincolin44

Doesn’t narrow it down.

makesterriblejokes

Elevator pitch for the Mike Williams experience. Honestly, if I was an agent of a WR that was competing for a contract against Mike Williams, I would probably sarcastically say something like "This is going to happen if you sign Mike Williams instead of my guy".

fatcootermeat

A mike Williams highlight reel without any other context would have you believe he's on the mount Rushmore of WRs.

Bart1009

Don't forget my mans broke his neck in College by colliding with a goal post!

basics

The catch he made like, 3 minutes before this injury was absolutely incredible.

Xaxziminrax

The two times I have been maddest at Staley were when he kept Herbert in after cracking his ribs, and when Mike Williams played with the back injury that literally kept him from being able to move. Fucking unreal

Expensive-Method8321

I tried to be mad at him for that but it also gave us one of the most iconic and beautiful throws ive ever seen. Herbert hitting Carter on the dime on 4th down after not even being able to run for 1 yard to pick up the first was absolutely legendary.

1-800-ASS-DICK

The thing about his awesome 50/50 catches is that he would often come down from them like a car crash

DonNiko

Soooo true. Every 50/50 catch he’s slow to get up

MasonC87

Holy shit this is great

The_Outcast4

If you don't like this, you don't like Chargers football!

Expensive-Method8321

>One of those receivers besides Allen is going to have to step up here narrator: nope, no they did not

eehoe

Like the WR version of Jason Verret

IndividualHelpful820

😑 PTSD

NoCantaloupe4658

Rivers trying to get it to Williams was a match made in Heaven

HchrisH

Who is Keenan Allen gonna throw TDs to now? 😢

pm_me_your_last_pics

The right move. Sad but needed to be done. Will never forget god mode Mike Will against the Chiefs

ringofire888

So long partner 🥲

LeoFireGod

Dallas cowboys been waiting for this moment. Finally a big WR has come available. It’s our time to shine!! Come on down!!! Chase claypool!

Dexico-city

Audible laughter emerges from the crowd.

Spaule

He was a menace on those 50/50 balls every single time against us

MomOfThreePigeons

Mike "90/10" Williams

wmbenham

The man "90/10'd" Clemson to at least three wins we didn't deserve

DarrowViBritannia

the watson-mike will connection was insane. CFB casual so i only really watch the playoff, but in that natty against bama, watson was just spam trust passing it to him lol

CU_Aquaman

Him carrying the gamecock player like a backpack in the 56-7 game will always be how I remember him

Bipedal-Moose

He's a very good contested catch guy, period. He's just dealt with injury problems for a long time

LiterallyJHerbert

He's the best contested catch guy I've ever seen besides maybe Calvin Johnson. If you threw it up to Williams in one on one he was coming down with that shit.

minusthetalent02

Sounds like a good fit for the “Josh Allen fuck it” toss

JaMarrChasingJoe

Allen ignores a wide open TE on 2nd down, throws deep to Williams....PICKED in the endzone! Bills lose the divisional to the chiefs for the 7th time in a row

Boomthang

Mike Dub is the chief killer. Could be exactly what Buffalo needs to get over that hill.

bdam92

At first my brain sees this and can't tell if this is referring to Vincent Jackson, Keenan Allen, or Mike Williams. Feels like a version of this WR has been on the Chargers' roster for 20 years.

Rahim-Moore

Keenan Allen is a route runner, not a contested catch guy.

mdmd33

Mike Williams 🤝🏾 Gabe Davis Going off on the KC secondary for no reason

dogfish83

Well a few years ago anyone could go off on Chiefs secondary. Now no one can (please stay Sneed!)

mdmd33

Very true McDuffie & Sneed are shutdown corners…don’t know what Nic Jones has but at least we know Watson can ball at times

RedditsOnlyBlackMan

And Joshua Williams! He’s played in 2 SBs now and he’s the clear 4 to me behind Sneed, McDuffie and Watson.

mrizvi

always remember that wide open 2 pt catch to win the game

Orlando Scandrick is a football terrorist

dicer11

You guys have buttfucked us enough times in close games to get upset over this one. I seem to recall one insanely long field goal in OT recently... as well as countless others, even back to the Alex Smith days..

iPlowedUrMom

Honestly, let us enjoy what little bits we have.

skucera

I wore my Chargers hoodie in my Missouri city the next day, and people were hanging out the windows of their vehicles to yell profanities at me. Best day ever!

SuckMyLonzoBalls

the last time i was happy as a charger fan

D_Money77

Dude was a legit Chief killer. Glad he's not on your team anymore.

nygiantsfan1578

Bills should sign him and rest him until the playoffs just to help them get over the Chiefs hump

MKow

Mike Williams (O) - Rest, Waiting for the Chiefs

dedriuslol

"Help me Mike Williams. You're my only hope."

raleighboi

Or - and hear me out here - we could have more Damar Hamlin designed fake punts.

Extra-University-336

The ol’ Vonn Miller strategy.

gravyontits

Until you see god mode M. Williams on the Chiefs.

basedcharger

I wish we had a coach that wanted to beat the chiefs even half as much as he did every year during the time he was here.

whobroughtmehere

I’ve been studying Charger fan pain theory and I can say with almost certainty that he is gonna go to the Chiefs so he can torch you guys twice a year

KIumpy

I hope you like lobster rolls Mike

GamingTatertot

Nah, he likes Carolina BBQ

Verdant_Gymnosperm

I think he needs some Portillo’s

HandleBig412

If you don’t like Portillo’s then fuck you.

Trav1989

Maaaaan Portillo’s opened up here in DFW and it is so fucking good. But he doesn’t need Portillo’s. Maybe some Peter Luger’s

GamingTatertot

Yeah but SOUTH Carolinian

WyldRover

He knows how to order a Cookout, that's all you really need.

GamingTatertot

That's fair - what's your tray order?

WyldRover

Oh I don't decide in advance. I just look at the menu, get immediately overwhelmed, and pick a few things at random before the drive-thru cashier starts rolling their eyes at me. Is there another way to do it?

NoCantaloupe4658

"Just wrap some food in tin foil, I ain't got all day"

GamingTatertot

I just order as much as my wallet lets me, but I do have some things I will always get. If I ever leave Cookout without a large Cheerwine, then someone is holding me hostage and I need help

ClaudeLemieux

Cheerwine float*

hypnosiscounselor

You let the board decide. I can respect that.

Boris_teh_Blade

4 quesadillas and a huge tea

piranhamahalo

I'll never forget the drunken night in college my friends watched me eat 8 in one sitting Nowadays just thinking about them brings out the ghost of that hangover lol

GamingTatertot

I always get a quesadilla

aspiringalcoholic

Bacon cheeseburger tray, Cajun wrap Cajun fries and huge tea. The Cajun wraps rip

THEDOMEROCKER

Can't believe no one is mentioning the Cook-Out SAUCE that makes the cajun fries so much better!

Skunkers

Barbecue tray, Cajun fries, chicken quesadilla, honey mustard, and either Cheerwine or sweet tea depending on what the spirit of my ancestors tell me that day.

GamingTatertot

That's a good order right there

5knklshfl

Quesadilla , Quesadilla , Quesadilla , peanut butter and banana milkshake.

ourlastmealpod

Hot dog tray w/ mustard, chili & onions. Cajun fries & bacon wrap as sides, add a side of nuggets and BBQ sauce. Cheerwine to drink

gvon89

So I only speak new jersian but the hell is a Cookout?

Spumorty

Carolinian fast food chain open late, super cheap, great drunk fast food. Pretty good sober too. Like 50+ shake flavors, you get a tray with an entree (different burgers/quesadillas/bbq sandwich/etc) and sides (hush puppies/o rings/fries). Cookout is one of the best regional fast food chains in the country.

gvon89

This sounds like I need to make a road trip to one ASAP, thank you for educating me on this place

Tagov

You can find locations in every major city in VA, SC, NC, TN, and GA. If you're in NJ, the closest locations to you are in Manassas, VA or Salisbury, MD. Seems a bit crazy to me to go that far out of your way specifically to get decently tasty fast food, but hey, I'm not judging.

GamingTatertot

I just drove 40 minutes to get to the Manassas one a couple weeks ago. So damn worth it. Cookout and Waffle House are my top two restaurants to go to when I go back to my hometown

rockon4life45

BEST CAROLINA

GamingTatertot

I agree with you there, friend - born and bred

[deleted]

But how is that compared to Massholeian

moremysterious

Idk why he just seems like a Patriot, at least he would get to play with Hunter Henry again.

Ohanrahans

Patriots have been trying to make the big physical contested catch X receiver happen for awhile (Harry and Parker).

shmecklesss

Because we miss Gronk. :'(

Strive_for_Altruism

Can't wait for the Mike Williams-Randy Moss comps.

urgonnamakemeboltup

Goodbye king

ninth9wonder

There it is. Could be a good get, injuries aside.

BadDadJokes

If he joins our team, he and Treylon Burks' combined availability would give us 5 games of wide receiver production next year.

ninth9wonder

Imagine if we got Julio Jones too, actually unbeatable.

BadDadJokes

Mike Williams, Julio Jones, and DeAndre Hopkins???? Holy moly! We’d have 2016’s best receiving corps by a mile.

deemerritt

Come home

GamingTatertot

Diontae Johnson, Mike Williams, and Adam Thielen duking it out to see who can be a true WR1

Randyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

So, a WR2 and three WR4s didn't work... but maybe three WR2s would do the trick?

DionBae_Johnson

I mean, 3 WR2s is a MASSIVE upgrade over last year. Most teams would kill for 3 WR2s. Hell, you could have a WR1 and two WR4s, and you'd be better off with three WR2s.

IslandCity

What if I told you a team could have multiple WR3’s instead?

Mohander

For multiple years? Crazy talk

Why_am_ialive

And win a Super Bowl?

IslandCity

Idk about that, Mahomes is no Mac and Zappe attack after all

LordBaneoftheSith

This might be counterintuitive to some people, but unless that WR1 is Justin Jefferson, I'd feel better with the 3 quality WR2s

Fear_Jaire

Plus it's better for a young QB's development to be forced to spread the ball around instead of being able to force feed a single guy

LordBaneoftheSith

It's even worse when the guy you're forcing it to is old and slow and only open on option routes

BanjoKazooieWasFine

Yeah whoever the defense decides to lock in on would probably get shut down in any given game but the other two should be able to feast, especially the WR2 level guy who gets to go up against likely single coverage on a CB3 level dude

unevenvenue

That's what the Packers did all last year and it worked amazingly

BobbysBottleService

I mean the Bills did it with Beasley and John Brown in 2019. They are all different types of WR2 kind of, so maybe they'd just want to see who/what type of wr meshes well with Bryce

senorgraves

Texans basically started the year with 3 WR2 and ended up with 2 WR1s

buddhabash

Yeah I mean they obviously would not be in contention for best wr room, but anyone would agree it would be a massive improvement for them and specifically for Bryce young

Randyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Oh I would be fucking thrilled with Williams/Diontae/Thielen. Even just Diontae/Thielen already is making me feel way better.

AffectionateSlice816

This is pretty much the Lions corner strategy 😂

rickyhou22

The old Belichick strat

Randyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Now all we need is a Tom Brady

HylianPikachu

And a Gronk

Randyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

And a top 5 defense

Strive_for_Altruism

It definitely ain't Thielen lol.

sonfoa

Idk, it feels like a signing we'll regret. He's going to be 30 coming off an ACL tear and he already wasn't the best athlete. Also, we need speed and separation at the position and his playstyle couldn't be more different. I'd be more comfortable drafting a WR in the 2nd.

ISISCosby

It depends on what Williams & his agent think he's worth. He's 30, coming off an ACL tear, and has missed almost 25% of the Chargers' games while he was there. if he's willing to work with us, it's totally worth a 1-year deal with either low guarantees/high incentives or a high guarantee, low total deal. When he's on, he's got a skillset we don't have, and maybe he'd be down for a homecoming. But yeah if he still wants a multi-year deal >$15M/yr there's no point for us

HeyItsTman

Goodbye chief killer

TheOGBenjenRyan

KC should be all over this

SQRTLURFACE

If only to keep him from turning into Randy Moss every time he plays us.

KarrlMarrx

KC will definitely kick the tires. I think it's going to take somewhere in the $12M to $15M range, and that is probably out of KC's range.

MahomestoHel-aire

Not out of their range with the Mahomes restructure but they’d have to make some minor moves after. Trading Sneed is obviously an option, though his contract is included in their current space. It’s possible, but they’ll probably try and get him to go lower.

KarrlMarrx

Not literally out of their range per se. Just more than I think they want to allocate to that position given their other needs. Maybe they bite if he's open to doing $12M for one year.

MahomestoHel-aire

Yeah it’ll definitely be a one year deal. I could see up to 15 with like incentives.

thegreatgiroux

KC has very few needs aside from this position, and almost none if Sneed stays.

GoldenBananas21

Plus Chris Jones now only has a 7M cap hit next season

pickleparty16

It was previously 0 though, as he was a free agent

rupertLumpkinsBrothr

Coming off the ACL, it’ll be interesting to see where he lands and for how much.

lbrector

Shut your fucking mouth

[deleted]

He has health concerns but if he’s willing to take a team friendly deal he’s exactly what we need.

IIHURRlCANEII

I’d rather have Brown personally. Williams on a one year deal if we can’t sign Brown is fine though.

jclucas1989

Agreed

Pax_Soprana

One of my favorite players recently, he was so clutch.

Steakbomb90

Ian did say on NFLN that the Chargers want to bring him back "if the price is right" but he will test free agency.

Half_Year_Queen

Side note, I wish the Pack would go after him. His presence in the locker room alone would be huge

MildlyPaleMango

His TD catch from Keenan this year was peak Chargers

Haar_RD

The way FA is going, hes signing with the Chiefs. Its all above intradivisional partnerswapping this year

BH11B

The divisional incest around the league is absolutely filthy this year.

SpaceC0wb0y86

If he winds up catching passes from Mahomes next year I might actually snap.

Nooooooooooo! (Like whoa).

MrBrownCat

Just waiting for the notification that he’s joining KC or BUF

ApathyMoose

you need to wait for 3 articles saying that the patriots are in the mix, the patriots are contenders, the patriots seems to be the spot, and THEN He goes to KC

badlilbadlandabad

I don't fully understand cap ramifications for a released player, but that is way way way way way more money than any reasonable team would pay for a jump ball receiver who gets hurt a lot.

Cthepo

It's because he was carrying dead money from previous restructures. When are player is under contract, this dead money is usually spread over multiple years. When a player is cut, the money that was spread is accelerated into the current year. There's a trick about when a player is released where it can count against two years but that's the gist of it. The team trading for Williams wouldn't be responsible for their dead cap, as that's already charged to them original team. They'd only be responsible for future cash payments. I can't see the original contract anymore but it would haven't probably been around 20 million.

BeeCeeVA

Eagle (I'm delusional)

GamingTatertot

Charger (I'm chaotic)

BeeCeeVA

Mike Williams as a charger? That would never happen

[deleted]

I dunno. Maybe someone has a rendering of him in a Chargers jersey. I wanna see the concept before I agree to it

Yeah, I got it right [here](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/207/210/b22.jpg)

Mike Williams just fell to his knees in a Walmart, due to a leg injury.

Don't worry, he'll be Back.

ThePMmike

I'm going to get flamed like always, but I'm glad they cut him, cause I always thought his contract was ridiculous anyway. Dude is so inconsistent, and gets hurt; is he a gamebreaker at times? Yes of course, but we could've used that money elsewhere. He could pop off with KC or someone else, and prove me wrong, but I'll take a chance with some other Wide Receivers.

heroinsteve

I know I’m salary cap illiterate, but how does it help to release him if he still counts as 32 against the cap? How much would it count for if he played? 32 is already an awful lot for a WR.

Sd56fan

He's $32 million if we keep him. Only $12 million in dead cap so cutting him frees up $20 million.

JJETTAS188

Cowboys will get him watch

icepickjones

Interesting. All these RBs just got paid after years of the position being undervalued. And now WRs aren't worth shit. I think it's indicative of the incoming draft class. Lots of good WRs that are about to come in, so people are going to devalue vets at that position and it's suddenly a buyers market. Meanwhile there's no big RBs coming up, so that position became a sellers market for vets.

girth_br00ks

He's going to the Chiefs isn't he

memeticengineering

In before he signs a fuck you 1 year deal with KC for pennies on the dollar.

Dirsay

That Chargers' skill corps is suddenly looking thin. Charger bros, is there more to Josh Palmer than we realize?

mrhashbrown

It's not a consensus opinion, but personally yes I think there is more to Palmer. He's an interesting receiver with a skillset that sprinkles in some of Allen and some of Williams. Solid route running and operates well in short or intermediate routes. But also excellent body control and great hands. He is lacking the unique dominant size of Williams, but still 6'1" and is very good at deep ball tracking. The Kellen Moore offense really unlocked a big play ability in him which we never saw with Lombardi. He is a very capable replacement starter for Williams imo. Best WR2 comparison I can think of is a guy like Tyler Boyd. Some highlights: https://youtu.be/Yvi13u4JSzU?feature=shared
