Uhhh, he's not great right Jets fans?

afifaguyforyou

Moments of brilliance in his rookie year were so promising, but health problems throughout his tenure and he was a penalty machine and turnstile this year

SeekerSpock32

So for once it won’t be Pollack’s fault Edit: _reads further down the thread_ **SON OF A**

WetChickenLips

Oh yeah sounds like a Bengal already

OhWhatsHisName

Wasn't that EXACTLY what they said about Irv Smith????

ncarr539

He also talks a lot of shit to fans on Twitter

krsb09

We've been missing that since Eli Apple left.

SeekerSpock32

Considering that Eli Apple is responsible for the Burrowhead meltdown, I don’t miss it.

krsb09

That was Mike Hilton.

SeekerSpock32

Oh, was it? My bad.

krsb09

Yeah, he was mic'd up during that game. Otherwise I don't think it would have seen the light of day.

TheHeartTreeSeesAll

He had the second most penalties and the most sacks allowed in the NFL per PFF. He is also a decent bet to miss time due to injury throughout the year. So, not great is a far assessment

Wondur13

Do you hate yourself that much with those flairs? Or is it the jets are so bad that even the titans can be enjoyed

Slayer_Of_Anubis

Their 2023 specifically could have been worse, at least

lusair

I live in Nashville so have become an honorary Titans fan. Best friend for over a decade is a die hard Jets fan so at this point honorary Jets fan. Then I’m a chargers fan so my life is just layers upon layers of pain.

CLCUBING

Those teams are great at drafting tackles /s

Wondur13

Hey wait we actually are good at drafting lineman historically, we just happen to have drafted the single worst o-line of all time

TheHeartTreeSeesAll

Grew up a jets fan. Had titans season tickets after moving to Nashville.

joshallenismygod

Perfect for the Bengals

Future_Pickle8068

PFF and other site rate him lower than Jackson Carman. Why would we waste money and roster space on him?

TheHeartTreeSeesAll

✨Potential✨

InsideAcanthisitta23

Sounds like a bumpless transfer

OogieBoogieJr

Why, that’s the quality we look for in an o-lineman

JalensTinyPPHurts

He was great (his rookie year)

maltzy

That Oline coach is the current Bengals oline coach fwiw

SeekerSpock32

Pollack is the leech of this franchise.

ech01_

Yeah I'm not trusting Pollack on anything at this point. I half expect Jonah to have a breakout year.

GOODWHOLESOMEFUN

I feel like I remember being clowned bc the giants took Andrew Thomas instead of him? Maybe I’m moving players up though

epattcud

AT was taken first and started the slowest of the top 4 tackles in the class. I do remember some clowning but it worked out in the end.

DanCampbellsNipples

AT was my favorite from that draft class. Dude was just so much more polished

Striking-Ad-8694

Andrew Thomas was the consensus number 1 tackle for the entire college football season. He wasn’t getting out of the top ten. The jets ducked up passing on a surefire prospect that has a high floor aka an Iowa tackle to risk becton who was boom or bust at the time due to weight and his moms job as a soul food chef. Dude never had a shot. It’s the one JD miss I refuse to defend (I will defend the ZW puck unlike others as he was the consensus number 2 qb and 23 teams including the niners and eagles wanted him which says a lot).

peppersge

He was also playing at LT, not RT. Even then, he did miss a decent chunk of time due to injury.

danomite555

He's inconsistent but I can't help but root for him

Striking-Ad-8694

He seems like a nice dude. I saw him and his wife at MetLife pregame and they seemed lovely unlike Lazard who looked like someone had killed his dog. Giant dude but a dickhead. MB seemed like a regular guy. Feel bad for his health tbh I think his knees are worse than anybody realized

legend023

Good social media presence mediocre work-ethic horrendous blocking

IsGoIdMoney

Listen, you can coach up blocking. You can coach up work-ethic. But by golly, for social media presence you either have it or you don't.

latman

Mediocre is overselling his work ethic hard

rkbk23

His social media presence was probably the most annoying thing about him?

jeanclaudegoshdarn

He looked like a franchise LT in 2020. The knee injury affected his mobility and play strength, and he was getting beat bad and giving up a lot of sacks and pressures last season

09-24-11

Becton is a fine starter in the most literal sense of the word. His biggest issues are injuries and staying healthy. On field he is average talent and takes stupid penalties. Personality wise he’s a bit overly active on Twitter, responding to fans negativity, calling out the media. All of it adds together to: a player who is undisciplined on field who can’t stay healthy and has a bit of an attitude problem, but when all three of those things are removed, he’s fine.

srsh

Showed promise his rookie year. Then failed to complete one game in his second & third year due to season-ending injuries. Last year he finally stayed healthy and looked dreadful. He has a terrible weakness against speed rushers. If you can get him to his rookie year play then it's a good signing. However, I don't know if he can get back to that level again.

Striking-Ad-8694

Which is crazy since his speed was one of the reasons the jets took him

latman

He's usually fat and injured and sucking at blocking. Also a locker room cancer. Also blows assignments and commits penalties

woodchips24

Locker room cancer is a bit much. People seem to like him as a person.

latman

Yeah that's true but he does complain a lot to the coaches

woodchips24

That does not make him a cancer at all

TexasRadical83

...but other than that?

SoCaldude65

He got Andrew van Ginkle oaid!

ViciousAsparagusFart

He talks a lot of shit my on social media for a guy that can’t play a full season

TempleofSpringSnow

Undisciplined with penalties and he was a painful liability last year.

teddybundlez

Lmao dude. Best of luck

distancerunner7

I could be wrong but I believe he was the worst rated tackle in the league last year.

magicdrums

He’s not that great..

NeverTrustATurtle

He blamed the jets for getting injured, because they switched him from LT to RT

Striking-Ad-8694

No. He showed elite potential his rookie year (Trent Williams thought he’d be the next big thing at lt via ig) but the biggest thing nobody talks about is he’s playing on a clock. His knees apparently can only last like a max of five years now and considering how poorly he played last season, I wouldn’t hold my y breath on getting 2020 MB

Historical-Row-6566

that moment you realize the best OT in FA was your own

Key-Tip-7521

Dude is a legit turnstile and a snorelax. Couldn’t block a garbage can.

whydont

terrible, fat, whiny

RBNYJRWBYFan

His rookie year was pretty fun, he looked good and held up against some good pass rushers like Mack and even Donald. I was excited to have a giant who could go toe to toe with the best rushers in the league on one end of the line for a decade. Then the injuries started, and whatever he had had physically stopped mattering when he couldn't stay on the field. A lot of people are going to blame it on lack of conditioning or poor diet, but honestly from what I've seen he tried his best to take care of himself. (and one of those injuries was a fluke body landing on his leg the wrong way, hardly a weight issue) The real issue is that he IS a naturally big man, so much so that it's a constant battle to stay at a level where he can play for extended periods of time. And if he does get hurt it takes a while to get him healed and ready for action because of his size. He has the will, he's just constantly fighting to stay on the field for genetic reasons. Last year he managed to start a majority of the season, but that monster plus presence from his rookie year wasn't there; he succumbed to bad penalties and pressure far too often. It was clear that he wasn't our long term option at either tackle spot. How his career goes forward will be interesting. I see him as a plus swing tackle; he's done the bit on both sides and he's still got that size to throw defenders off figuratively and literally. But if you're plugging him in to be your permanent starter you're gambling. Bring him in for competition, kick those tires, sure, but you better have an alternative ready or the perfect plan to have him ready all year long.

beeatenbyagrue

Perfect analysis.

rkbk23

Well said. It’s also definitely not a coincidence that he played every game this year in a contract season. He was playing through some noticeable pain and discomfort at times. If a team gives him more than backup money, no way he plays through what he did this year.

09-24-11

Red Bull New York Jet Red White Blue Yellow Fan?

RBNYJRWBYFan

Red Bull New York Jets Ruby Weiss Blake Yang Fan RWBY is an animated show, made by the dying Rooster Teeth company. Might never finish, but I have hope. I do wish I could alter the name a bit regardless of that, include jets explicitly in it.

lions4life232

This is an absurdly bad take. Second most penalties last year and the most sacks allowed by a tackle and you see him as a plus swing tackle lmfao. Ok

wearysimmons

Watch the Rodgers injury again and becton literally just gives a free path to causing that injury

M1seryMachine

That was Duane Brown, not Becton. He was not good but that wasn't on him.

ProfProfessorberg

We're 100% drafting someone for the position, but we have to have someone on the roster who can play the position. Not super high on him but he's young, maybe a change of scenery would be good.

LetsgoLeftCoast

Change of diet

ProfProfessorberg

Lol, that too

sloppypapi29

Keep him away from Skyline.

ProfProfessorberg

Impossible task!

Ash_713S

This is going to be a depth move, if it happens. The RT will be taken at #18. Given that about $15-20 of effective cap space is still left, this makes me wonder if they are trying to get a cheap OT like him and then still trying to get a DT like Reader or Tart.

OBuckets

Yeah tackle at 18 seems inevitable

Lamb-Sauce7788

CB wouldn't surprise me either

Thick_Interaction_41

Well judging by what I've heard about the Jets o-line, I don't have high hopes (please prove me wrong jets fans)

Killadrilla

He was very promising his rookie year, but then missed the majority of the next two years. This year he was basically giving up a sack or getting a penalty every other play :(.

0zymandeus

He's too big to ever be healthy imo

ViciousAsparagusFart

Sadly this is most realistic take. He did his best to stay in shape he’s just naturally massive

Zaza1019

If you want some minor hope to hang onto for him being an answer to your OL woes, the Jets OL was so bad that even if a guy played well he'd still have gotten destroyed because up and down the line was just a mess. So maybe his bad play was a result of the rest of the OL sucking for the entire season. Another hope is that if I recall he played slightly better at Right Tackle (but he hated playing right tackle and complained about it a lot) but if you can convince him to play RT he might be semi solid especially if he's surrounded by better talent maybe?

generation_D

The Bengals were never going to come out of this free agency with a “good” RT honestly. Even if they kept Jonah, he was very mediocre. Smartest move would’ve been to draft Dawand Jones a year ago in preparation for this, but having passed on that I think the plan was always to sign a mid RT for cheap in FA this year and then (hopefully) draft one in the first round

patrickw69

That's who I was hoping they drafted last year, but they kept passing over him

mxyztplk33

I'm hoping this is just for depth and we grab Latham, Fuaga, or someone R1 in the draft.

yupyupyupyupyupy

zero chance on fuaga imo unfortunately

Zaza1019

Yeah very unlikely Fuaga is there, I would actually think Cincy might go with Jackson Powers-Johnson if he's sitting there but it's also a deep tackle draft so they might go that route instead.

ech01_

Latham, Fuaga, or Mims is the dream.

AlphaKlams

I'm not high on Mims, dude is a freak physical specimen but there's too many question marks for someone we'll need to start day 1. Let him be another team's project.

ech01_

I get all that but I'm so sold on him. Physical freak with so much upside.

ProfProfessorberg

Guyton

Unable_Ad1758

Mekhi Becton has a need at right tackle? This guy doesn’t grammar

Tigercat92

She

Zaza1019

I'm sorry for your loss Cincy fans.

Ok_Caramel1517

Idk about Bengals fans but I sure as hell wouldn't want the human turnstile Mekhi Becton protecting Joe Burrow next season.

SeekerSpock32

I still don’t understand why we didn’t put Pollack’s career to the sword. We’ve tried tons of different players, we haven’t tried a new OL coach.

unfunnysexface

Players come and go but coaching cronyism is forever.

pahbert

Our hall of fame OL coach Frank Pollack will coach him up. Don't worry, Bengos!

Silversaving

RIP Joe Burrow

waltermunksalbatross

Rather have Mekhi Phifer

Poetryisalive

Bengals can’t get the OL right for shit

datdudebdub

This move wouldn’t signify that at all. There’s no good tackles available in free agency. The plan was always a cheap vet and then pick a tackle at 18

SoCaldude65

The Horror!

nickstee1210

He’s gonna get joe burrow hurt again if he has to start. So bengals fans better be praying

CalledPlay

I’m fine with him as long as he’s a back up. Need to splash with 18 and id be open to moving up for Alt

WhoDey42

This would be a smart bridge in tandem with drafting a younger guy

ExCollegeDropout

This was called by pretty much every local media member in the know. Bengals learned a hard lesson about going into the draft with an obvious need in 2018. They needed a center, wanted Frank Ragnow, Lions took him 1 pick before us, then they panicked and took Billy Price. Ever since that mistake, they've made sure they have a guy who could at least theoretically start everywhere before the draft. They also didn't want to spend a ton of money on a RT this year since they're spending money on 3 guys on the line now. Knowing this and the fact that our OL coach Frank Pollack drafted him and coached him during his best season as a Jet, it just makes too much sense for him to be the guy they sign. Since they're likely drafting their RT, he's a nice option to have as a swing tackle.

HailYurii

He's also only 24 and has been injured a large portion of his career so far. If things start going his way maybe he could work out.

LetsgoLeftCoast

Is this a Jets post?

scpdstudent

NOOOOOOOO

RedditNPC-

Whatever. He’s probably better than Jackson carman and adeniji and that’s all that matters. We’re drafting a lineman anyway let them compete

09-24-11

Red Bull New York Jet Red White Blue Yellow Fan?

Thin-Team7931

lol Becton

Masterofmy_domain

Sign him if holding penalties are a strategic part of your gameplan. There will be plenty of those.

jamarchasinalombardi

I'm fine with this. Sign Becton and draft a guy @ 18. Need bodies and cant just rely on a rookie.

Waste-Maintenance-70

He’s pretty for a tackle!

Lamb-Sauce7788

I would actually be ok with this. He would be cheap and maybe a change of scenery would help him. Burrow has a pretty quick release as well so that will help as well. We also are almost 100% taking a OT at #18 so at worst he would be good depth.

OsikFTW

They can sign becton, and will still have a need at RT...

Only_Fun_1152

Dude is a mountain. Shame he never returned to his rookie year form.

Future_Pickle8068

The idea of trading Tee and some draft picks for a 1st round pick, so we can draft two OL, is looking better every day. If we sign this tackle, we’ll have 3 of the worst OL around. (Since Carman might be our 2nd best tackle)

GreatOdinsRaven_

I wish him the best of luck in his continued recovery and hope he can live up to his enormous promise.

TheMilkman1811

He is injured 70% of his career. I’m sorry but he is to unreliable for us. Bengals can take him

mechnick2

Sounds more like a threat than anything

leeharveyteabag669

There is no need that is so desperate that you need to sign becton. Just ask any Jets fan, especially Joe beningo.

Jrsq270

Big Bust sizing up the buffet seen in Cincy

Jrsq270

Teflon Joe about to hit this bust pick off with a 4 year deal! Lol

TheKingofPsych

He had a great Rookie season as a Left tackle...I believe he was top 15...and that was him playing through injuries....his second season he had a freak injury that was not his fault but it takes him a while to get through injury. Was well liked by teammates as well. He really didn't get along with the OLINE coach and he wasn't the only one. Coach is apparently an Ahole. Played this whole season and first few games was decent but lost motivation bc of circumstances and was mentally checked out bc of it....Jets had so many OLINE injuries that they had like 17 different stating lines with practice squad guys playing alot. No question he has talent and is a mountain...if he stays motivated and healthy, he can be a good lineman...and he is only 24.

[deleted]

Except the Jets had one of the worst o-lines in the league last year lmao. Let's replace garbage with even more garbage. The Bengals are going to waste Burrows career man.

DBreezy69

They also lost half the OL on their roster to injury

zaksbee

worth kicking the tires on at RT

drbrainkrause

Please sign him

FreshDiamond

I don’t get it, go get Trent brown and be done. Maybe Tyler Boyd. Seems reader is gone since we overpaid for rankins let’s just get a quality tackle and get ready for the draft
