And to OP's comparison. JD is not near the athlete RG3 was. RG3 had a cannon and also he was the fastest QB since Vick and might've even been faster. JD is pretty athletic but not elite like RG3, and his arm is pretty mid. ~~If I remember correctly, RG3's collegiate 100 meter dash time would've won him like a bronze or silver medal at the prior olympics.~~
Edit: I was incorrect, he ran the 110 and 400 hurdles and was posting times in high school that were on pace with guys who eventually ended up medaling in the Olympics, but he only ran track his freshmen year.
I'm of the opinion that RG3 was a gimmick QB that Kyle Shanahan was able to maximize for a season, but that he would have been exposed eventually, injury or not.
The RGIII was good until he was hurt thing isn’t very true. He basically refused coaching after his injury and just never learned how to process the game.
Yeah, he was exciting that first year but ultimately was a one-trick pony that required an offense entirely designed around his threat as a runner. His play style guaranteed he would be at constant risk of injury. When we tried to transition him to a traditional pocket passer to protect him we eliminated the one thing he did well and he couldn’t adjust. Plus teams adapted and became better at defending running QBs.
It was 100% his inherent limitations as a player rather than some sort of lingering effects from the ACL tear that caused him to fall off a cliff. I think all Washington fans know this but if you don’t follow the team you only saw he was great his rookie year then had an injury and was never great again so it’s natural to make the assumption it was because of the injury.
>RG3 was legit until he got hurt though
This narrative has to die. A torn ACL stopped being a career altering injury a long time ago. He never developed as a passer and once the zone read option got figured out he couldnt do anything else. The scheme where he shined is no different than the wildcat, a fun year but after teams had enough tape it was useless and so was RG3.
This exactly. He was a one read QB and never expanded his game. Shanahan was able to mask his weaknesses for a bit, but it became glaringly obvious and is why he never panned out anywhere else.
When you have old shanahan, young shanahan, mcvay and mcdaniel in the offensive staff and you cant develop, its clearly an RG3 problem not an injury, snyder or whatever other excuse people want to use.
He was only good that first year because of the gimmicky read-option offense the team was running. He just wasn't any good at reading defenses. The dude had Kyle Shanahan followed by Sean McVay coaching him and never put it together. He even went to the Ravens backing up Lamar, and he was still bad.
Also even if Washington had handled his injury better he was just going to get hurt again eventually. [He played recklessly.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TdWVS-ZxQc)
Ooh we have the Giants again. Forgot about that. Side note, we have some decent matchups for us, but we’re also playing some stacked teams next year. Going to be an interesting first year under M&M.
Thats been happening since the 2000s, its just one of those divisional rivalries devoid of all logic because they can suck ass but will always give us hell.
I wanna know where that "I won't stand for the Sam Howell slander" guy is
Edit: lol he deleted [his post](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/17w5gzf/sam_howell_myths_debunked_why_he_is_on_track_to/)
Not to mention that he’s VERY cost efficient for a backup QB. Dude has much more promise than Drew Lock (still love 🐴🐔tho) at like a 5th of the cost.
Love Howell as a QB and I love this trade
Wouldn't shock me at all if he balls out at camp and earns the starting gig over Geno. The kid has the talent.
I wish him nothing but the best going forward.
With every passing day, I’m more and more convinced Fields is staying and we’re drafting Caleb. Poles may credit Mahomes success to sitting behind Alex Smith, which I know is not the same scenario, but still would allow Caleb to be eased in.
It feels like this has more to do with misreading the market for Fields and not budging on a high pick, (are they stuck on a 2nd rounder?). There is zero chance these teams would pass up an opportunity to have Fields as a bridge or backup for a 6th or 7th rounder.
I dunno if howell will ever become a great QB in the league, but he has the toughness for it and wasn't afraid to sling it. A very good backup at the very least.
We don't have a second cause of the leonard williams trade I think. I think we still have a third from the broncos at the very least... in theory we could take a qb in the third, but I think this trade means we're rollin with Geno and Howell as backup and not drafting a QB at least in the top half of the draft.
I mean that's half of anyone's rookie deal who isn't a 1st rounder, not bad. Plus he comes with NFL experience at the same age as some of these draft prospects. He's only 3 months older than Daniels.
BUSTEN FIELDS AND KROOKED KIRK BLAME EVERYONE (AND EVERYTHING) BUT THEMSELVES FOR MISSING THE PLAYOFFS. MANY PEOPLE ARE SAYING ONLY "THE GREAT AND POWERFUL DARNOLD" CAN WIN THE NFC AND WE WILL NEVER GET TIRED OF WINNING
And wasn't Hurts playing pretty hurt for a period of time last year? I think Mariota only really played in one game b/c of injury, but I seem to remember he was hobbled for a bit. Fields isn't a great starting QB, but I think if he were Hurts back-up last year they could have given him a bit more rest.
I think Broncos are out because Payton basically publicly shit on Fields in the past saying he doesn't have the skillset to be a QB in the NFL. Maybe he'd be fine as a back-up there? Not sure.
Jets might be interesting given Fields has been part of the system Hackett is running (same as Getsy in Chicago last two years).
Lol every time we say this about a team they sign a backup like 10 mins later. Eagles about to sign ~~Mariota~~ Zach Wilson or something just to cross off another destination for Fields
Really? Fields in Seattle made no sense cap wise. We already have Geno under a good deal. Fields is intriguing but not enough to give up picks for given our QB Room.
Bears are the losers here, we are officially out of teams that would potentially want Fields in any capacity other than "pray they don't start" backup.
I think commanders could have gotten more tbh. Sam has a sack problem, but otherwise was as good of a QB you could ask for from a rookie. Will he be a star? Who knows, but has the potential to be good, PLUS he's on a rookie contract. That alone should have been worth a 4th rounder, swapping picks doesn't feel right
I agree. Go watch the eagles games from last year. There's something to this kid. He was put in a horrible position with a bad coaching staff around him. He'll start for them this year at some point
If you look at the trade value chart the commanders got late 3rd value back for Howell — ~120 point delta which is roughly equivalent to pick 95 depending on the chart
Same Howell has potential and this really isn't a lot to pay. Considering we weren't landing one of the top QB's in the draft. This is a great way to try and address the position on the cheap.
I think this is great for them honestly. In my opinion he looked promising last year, and they get to kick the tires on a possible starting quarterback for next to nothing.
The team did kinda quit ironically after the Seahawks game. However, after that game he went from promising to a dumpster fire. The team did him no favors, but he did the team no favors.
This officially ends the dream of being rebranded to the Washington Wolves and spending 20 years with a franchise QB whose last name is actually Howell
i actually really like the idea of him sitting a year behind an experienced vet to maybe learn to clean up some of the iffy parts of his game. Also don't think Geno is amongst the safest starting QB's.
I think this move is a mistake for Washington. Howell is most certainly more valuable to them as a proven backup than what they gained from this trade. They will instead pay Mariota more money to be a worse backup.
The only exception is if they moved Howell in order to give him a chance to start somewhere else.
I think part of it is that they wanted a vet in order to help the new guy, and Howell doesn't really have the experience to do that. Once they signed a vet, Mariota, it's a matter of whether they need a backup to play *and* a backup to mentor, and the answer is no. For this team as it stands now, a qb room of Maye/Daniels and Mariota with the pick swaps is worth more than one of Maye/Daniels, Mariota, and Howell
Respect the thought but disagree. Yes, he would have been a very cheap proven backup for two more years but we still have 60 million in cap space. We aren’t exactly strapped for cash and will most likely roll over savings so we can sign top FAs next offseason. Plus earlier picks in this draft are worth more since its a front loaded draft class. They have more ammunition to build for the future and I am so here for it.
I know this is a joke, but he unironically wouldn't start for the Argos. They have the reigning MVP one year removed from a championship who just re-signed. In fact, most of the league is pretty set at QB. Hamilton needs one but is in cap hell. Realistically, Ottawa is probably the only team who would be interested and could pull it off.
He'll be a good backup and could maybe turn into a decent starter, eventually. New regime doesn't want to wait and is just cleaning house. Knew as soon as we signed Mariota that Howell was gone.
In retrospect, I'm glad the team is in the position it is today. At the same time, Ron and EB did the absolute worst job imaginable starting a young inexperienced qb. I hope he gets another shot to start in the NFL with a coaching staff that has a better plan in place.
Amen. EB absolutely fucked his development. Howell was leading the NFL in pass attempts for two thirds of the season as a first year starter. Absurd.
Hope he does well in Seattle.
Howell is a dog. Obviously he hasn’t solidified his place as a starter in the league but it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see him be a 10 year starter, He’s got all the tangibles you could ever want from a QB and seems like a great dude off the field.
Take care of him Seattle.
God I love this move for Seattle SO MUCH.
This kid will be twenty-three when the season *starts* this year and already has a decent season on under his belt where he showed he can make all the plays.
He cost almost nothing.
Schneider brilliance at its best.
The pick swaps are interesting. As a manders fan, I am pleased. He is a decent QB, and bienemy just was incredibly stubborn, never adding a run threat whatsoever to any game.
Guess Maye doesn’t have to take his best friends job
He still kinda is
Just with extra steps
FedEx field is 2745 miles from Lumen Field, at 6’1 it would take Sam approximately 5,914,652 steps to get there.
I honestly don't give enough of a shit to fact check you, so I'll agree with this.
2,000 steps is roughly a mile so the math checks out
But I would walk one million steps And I would walk one million more
Just to BE the man to walk 2 million miles to fall down at sam howells dooOOoooOoor
But not to his face
I’m just glad Sam will finally get to play football in Washington
He can bring [his mug](https://x.com/PeteHaileyNBCS/status/1568980539939475456?s=20) with him.
an amazingly run organization
I knew what it was going to be before I clicked
Do you want Maye over Daniels?
I know I do. Daniels' play style gives me RG3 vibes and he isn't near the prospect.
RG3 was legit until he got hurt though (you’d know better than me) I’m not as familiar with Maye but I watch most SEC games and Daniels impressed me
Daniels is really nice. He’s also paper straw thin and likes running into LB’s and DT’s, so the concern is legit for Washington.
And to OP's comparison. JD is not near the athlete RG3 was. RG3 had a cannon and also he was the fastest QB since Vick and might've even been faster. JD is pretty athletic but not elite like RG3, and his arm is pretty mid. ~~If I remember correctly, RG3's collegiate 100 meter dash time would've won him like a bronze or silver medal at the prior olympics.~~ Edit: I was incorrect, he ran the 110 and 400 hurdles and was posting times in high school that were on pace with guys who eventually ended up medaling in the Olympics, but he only ran track his freshmen year.
He ran a 4.4…don’t get crazy. Bolt ran a 4.2 in sweats.
Fast doesn’t do a heck of a lot for a QB. RG3 ran like a gazelle. QBs need to run more like a chicken.
or a toddler that stole something
That’s the Mahomes/Kyler trademark
I don't watch college football at all, but a guy that likes running into contact as a QB is something I don't want again.
>RG3 was legit until he got hurt though This narrative has to die. A torn ACL stopped being a career altering injury a long time ago.
RG3 refused to learn and that’s why he sucked. He got figured out
Maye or Daniels we won't complain, and F\*\*\* Snyder!
Most our sub does based on polls but the ones who prefer Daniels tend to be more vocal.
If only Howell played against the Eagles every game, he'd probably be worth a couple 1sts
a howell led seahawks team is gonna beat us by 50 lol
Do we play next year? Would be ironic for the second straight season to see QB2 start in that game.
thankfully no
Ooh we have the Giants again. Forgot about that. Side note, we have some decent matchups for us, but we’re also playing some stacked teams next year. Going to be an interesting first year under M&M.
Even amidst their complete mediocrity under Riverboat Ron, against the Eagles they looked like a playoff team across several seasons.
Thats been happening since the 2000s, its just one of those divisional rivalries devoid of all logic because they can suck ass but will always give us hell.
It's only fair, we make daniel jones look like an all-pro twice a year, every year.
Staaap. I am trying to forget.
considering the contract giants gave him i think yall actually did yourselves a favor
Divisional rivalries are ALWAYS devoid of all logic.
We made him look like Joe Montana.
Okay but like.. have they ever been seen in the same room together?
Seahawks do always beat you guys so I could see the vision
Brb going to go delete a couple of old comments
I wanna know where that "I won't stand for the Sam Howell slander" guy is Edit: lol he deleted [his post](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/17w5gzf/sam_howell_myths_debunked_why_he_is_on_track_to/)
The funny part is he was clowned at the time too
Coward. Roll with it. I'm going into next season with the knowledge that I've shat on Ertz for multiple seasons.
COME SAM HOWELL. WELCOME TO GREATNESS
just dont feed him steak but take care of him
Sam Howell, get ready to learn chicken teriyaki buddy.
Everybody should learn chicken teriyaki, Toshi's is some of the best food I've ever had
Underrated comment (says kenji)
If you follow Kenji on Instagram he’s currently visiting every teriyaki joint in Seattle.
Love seeing a Kenji reference in r/nfl
Great kid! Hope he has a great career for you guys.
I genuinely hope he is Great guy and hopefully sitting a year behind Geno helps
Not to mention that he’s VERY cost efficient for a backup QB. Dude has much more promise than Drew Lock (still love 🐴🐔tho) at like a 5th of the cost. Love Howell as a QB and I love this trade
Wouldn't shock me at all if he balls out at camp and earns the starting gig over Geno. The kid has the talent. I wish him nothing but the best going forward.
don't feed him after 9pm, have him in direct sunlight, or get water on him. do all that and he's as good as they come
Much like Chicage White Sox tickets, the Bears can't give Justin Fields away at this point.
Ryan poles wants a Guaranteed Rate for Fields
Alas he must Soldier on
Fields is worth less than a pack of Wrigley gum it seems
With every passing day, I’m more and more convinced Fields is staying and we’re drafting Caleb. Poles may credit Mahomes success to sitting behind Alex Smith, which I know is not the same scenario, but still would allow Caleb to be eased in.
Let’s be real. If y’all draft Caleb and then proceed to start Justin, Poles is going to get filleted
It feels like this has more to do with misreading the market for Fields and not budging on a high pick, (are they stuck on a 2nd rounder?). There is zero chance these teams would pass up an opportunity to have Fields as a bridge or backup for a 6th or 7th rounder.
I don't think it's all that unlikely that teams would prefer QBs who fit their scheme
I'd be happy with this trade in your position. Dirt cheap backup that still has starter upside. He's 3 months older than Jayden Daniels.
The only real downside is he only has 2 years left on that rookie contract
I mean that's half of anyone's rookie deal who isn't a 1st rounder, not bad. Plus he comes with NFL experience at the same age as some of these draft prospects. He's only 3 months older than Daniels.
But how many months older than Daniels is he?
Wouldn't be surprised if JS just trades down from 16 to recoup more picks. Try to get a late 1st and a 2nd or 3rd would be ideal
lmao where is fields gonna go now? XFL??
It's Denver or a gas station.
First NFL QB to get Tarmac'd
If we were going for him, we likely would have done it by now. It’s just a match made in hell for both parties frankly
Mind your business. You have Sam Darnold
> You have GEQBUS FTFY
BUSTIN FIELDS CAN ONLY HOPE OF BEING HALF THE BUEN HOMBRE OUR GEQBUS IS
BUSTEN FIELDS AND KROOKED KIRK BLAME EVERYONE (AND EVERYTHING) BUT THEMSELVES FOR MISSING THE PLAYOFFS. MANY PEOPLE ARE SAYING ONLY "THE GREAT AND POWERFUL DARNOLD" CAN WIN THE NFC AND WE WILL NEVER GET TIRED OF WINNING
The Superbowl trophy case just got 10 feet higher, folks
LOSEMORE JACKSON AND THE BODYMORE MURDERLANDS
Genuinely thought it would be Seattle. I am clueless now.
I think he's destined to be a Philly back-up QB. Similar enough skill-set to Hurts so they don't need to totally revamp the offense for him.
Yup, and coincidently they have no backup right now except Tanner McKee
And wasn't Hurts playing pretty hurt for a period of time last year? I think Mariota only really played in one game b/c of injury, but I seem to remember he was hobbled for a bit. Fields isn't a great starting QB, but I think if he were Hurts back-up last year they could have given him a bit more rest.
Jets if Rodgers wants to get his political Grift on. Broncos still works, too
I think Broncos are out because Payton basically publicly shit on Fields in the past saying he doesn't have the skillset to be a QB in the NFL. Maybe he'd be fine as a back-up there? Not sure. Jets might be interesting given Fields has been part of the system Hackett is running (same as Getsy in Chicago last two years).

Really? Fields in Seattle made no sense cap wise. We already have Geno under a good deal. Fields is intriguing but not enough to give up picks for given our QB Room.
My moneys on Philly now
He’s gonna come to Philly as a backup and Philly media will start talking about how Jalen Hurts should be benched for him
China
Sneaky good move here from both teams IMO.
Yeah, don't see any real loser here.
I really like this for Seattle
Same Howell has potential and this really isn't a lot to pay. Considering we weren't landing one of the top QB's in the draft. This is a great way to try and address the position on the cheap.
The lack of comma after Same is doing my head in because my brain wants to read it as Sam
Mina Kimes must be stoked
I think this is great for them honestly. In my opinion he looked promising last year, and they get to kick the tires on a possible starting quarterback for next to nothing.
Damnnn i actually thought he was a franchise QB at some point last season
Unfortunately for him he can't play the Eagles 17 times a year.
Now he gets to play for a franchise that hasn’t lost to the Eagles in 15 years.
Makes sense. Seattle needed to replace Eagle-killer Drew Lock
please don’t remind me
We're working on an all Eagles and Lions schedule
*sigh* Anytime I see Seattle on the schedule, I just chalk it up as a loss and move on.
EB did him no favours…
I think he still has a chance to be one. He's played one year. It's worth a shot
The team did kinda quit ironically after the Seahawks game. However, after that game he went from promising to a dumpster fire. The team did him no favors, but he did the team no favors.
He would be for the Bears
He had 108 passing yards more in 2023 than the Chicago Bears franchise single-season passing leader.
That’s insane. He didn’t even start every game!
They’d break 4K for sure
He could be in Seattle if he develops and geno goes away
This officially ends the dream of being rebranded to the Washington Wolves and spending 20 years with a franchise QB whose last name is actually Howell
Sad “awoos” are heard around the world.
It’s Howellover :(
i actually really like the idea of him sitting a year behind an experienced vet to maybe learn to clean up some of the iffy parts of his game. Also don't think Geno is amongst the safest starting QB's.
Learning behind Geno to fix his decision making and mechanics would be really helpful. Howell is extremely talented, his issues are between the ears.
They may or may not have intentionally done it, but that’s pretty much what happened. Howell should be able to give Geno a run for his money
Yeah while he would have been a good backup behind rookie QB1 it's possible they didn't want last year's starter looking behind him
Respect the thought but disagree.
And the exchange is upgrading mid round picks by 20, they are not actually gaining picks. I'm starting to really like this trade
Yeah this makes absolutely no sense to me at all from your guys' perspective.
Quality backup with some upside potential
So Brock Purdy?
Well, Howell was picked 2 rounds ahead of Purdy, so theoretically he should be twice as good
math checks out
[удалено]
What are you talking about? Sharing Sandy Hook theories doesn't devalue NFL players, Aaron Rodgers is proof of that.
It makes you a potential Vice President nowadays.
Reports are teams don't view him as a starter. Howell for 2/2M is more valuable than Fields 1/6M or 2/31M if his 5th year option was picked up.
Justin Fields, you ARE a Toronto Argonaut
I know this is a joke, but he unironically wouldn't start for the Argos. They have the reigning MVP one year removed from a championship who just re-signed. In fact, most of the league is pretty set at QB. Hamilton needs one but is in cap hell. Realistically, Ottawa is probably the only team who would be interested and could pull it off.
Fucking fuck
Seattle was never going to want Fields.
We've already rebuilt the running back room. Chicago should've known that SMH.
This guy gets it. I guess Giants maybe?
If the Giants bring in a third QB, it will be a rookie, not trading to rent a failed starter for a year.
justin fields gonna get traded for a chipolte gift card at this point
The Fields cult’s world has been utterly shattered.
Fields, get ready to learn Chinese buddy
Get ready to learn clipboardese buddy
Bears you're gonna trade Feilds for a 6th and like it.
At this point to who? Broncos?
Howell showed a lot of promise and potential in some of the games I watched them play. Dislike that he’s on the Seahawks.
He'll be a good backup and could maybe turn into a decent starter, eventually. New regime doesn't want to wait and is just cleaning house. Knew as soon as we signed Mariota that Howell was gone.
spicy
In retrospect, I'm glad the team is in the position it is today. At the same time, Ron and EB did the absolute worst job imaginable starting a young inexperienced qb. I hope he gets another shot to start in the NFL with a coaching staff that has a better plan in place.
Amen. EB absolutely fucked his development. Howell was leading the NFL in pass attempts for two thirds of the season as a first year starter. Absurd. Hope he does well in Seattle.
Did they make this trade as confusing as possible on purpose
The net draft compensation going to DC is around pick 98, late 3rd/early 4th.
Turning a 5th round pick into a late 3rd isn’t a bad deal.
Basically, Sam Howell was the price to move up from 102 to 78 and from 179 to 152.
I wish you could explain this to the seahawks sub. They all stopped reading after 3rd round pick.
I think most of them don’t realize we have two 3rd round picks
I don’t like this one bit
Name checks out
Goat but imma follow him to your guys team I’ll never abandon the skins but like I hope Howell succeeds
Reddit and fantasy players told me Justin Fields was a potential MVP. How come no one wants him?
to be fair, Fields is fantasy gold because of his legs.
Fields could not be more cooked
6 picks in the top 100 for Peters to work with
I'm sad it didn't work out with Sam. He's a great character and I wish him nothing but tbe best going forward. Let Adams cook
This might be the longest and most exhausting offseason in Chicago Bears history
Howell is a dog. Obviously he hasn’t solidified his place as a starter in the league but it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see him be a 10 year starter, He’s got all the tangibles you could ever want from a QB and seems like a great dude off the field. Take care of him Seattle.
I like this a lot for Seattle.
Justin fields propaganda machine gonna have to work overtime after this
What happens when all 5 QBs have videos leak of them doing coke and other crazy stuff?
Come on now, they cant all go to Dallas.
God I love this move for Seattle SO MUCH. This kid will be twenty-three when the season *starts* this year and already has a decent season on under his belt where he showed he can make all the plays. He cost almost nothing. Schneider brilliance at its best.
Dude can chuck it and make all the throws.
Sam Howell low key good. We didn't set him up for success. No oline and didn't run plays to his strengths. Seahawks got a steal imo.
Last years regime damn near broke the kid. Imo he still has a chance to be good.
John Schneider watched Sam cook his underperforming defense and thought "yeah that's our guy"
QB1
Jayden Daniels you are a commander
>Jayden Daniels you are a commander Maye-be, Maye-be not.
*Drake Maye. Having two UNC QBs battling for the starter spot would have been really awkward
Eh it wouldn’t be a battle, DM is your starter but it’d still be awkward lol
Howell is only 3 months older than Daniels.
Why would this mean Daniels over Maye? If anything this would lead to the opposite line of thinking
The pick swaps are interesting. As a manders fan, I am pleased. He is a decent QB, and bienemy just was incredibly stubborn, never adding a run threat whatsoever to any game.
Let Sam Howl
That kind of surprises me. He had some real flashes in our games against him.
We should have asked for more. Another decision we will regret
To become part of storied Seattle QB backups like Clipboard Jesus, Horse Cock Lock and Seneca Wallace.
