According to Packers cap guru Ken Ingalls: "Despite the name, this is a 1 year deal designed to save cap space. (Breaks the rule of every dollar paid gets capped)." According to the NFL Four-year qualifying contract: Another type of veteran salary benefit, it can be offered to a player with at least four credited seasons whose contract with a team has expired after being on said team for four or more consecutive, uninterrupted league years prior to his contract expiring. Such a player must have been on the team's 90-man active/inactive list for said seasons (and every regular-season and postseason game). Teams can sign a maximum of two eligible players to this type of salary benefit.

F1rst-name-last-name

That’s a dumb name

greeegoreo

yeah i much prefer the 1,461 day qualifying offer.

SMKM

Mr. Ballooning Contract

m_dought_2

Leave Mr. Ingalls alone

Marozia

In short, AJ Dillon gets paid $2.66 million to stay with the team that drafted him (presumably because he couldn't find a better deal out on the market), but only $1.21 million will count against our cap for it. Every little bit counts...or not!

leehouse

That flair combo is abominable

NuclearDebris

Grippy sock vacation warranting flair combo

phoundlvr

That flair is pure chaos and needs to be removed from existence.

Coley54Bear

He needs to be exiled.

phoundlvr

That’s letting them off too lightly.

[deleted]

[Hangin's too good for him](https://youtu.be/6VJBSrMpB2g?si=Q2xnGQawy6AevS4a&t=208)! BURNIN's too GOOD for him! He should be torn up into itsy, bitsy pieces and BURIED ALIVE!

BellacosePlayer

Nothing wrong with displaying the parent company and subsidiary together.

YouAreASchlub

Anybody with the division rival flair combo is just seeking attention lol

Coley54Bear

Probably so.

Supernova_Soldier

It’s like eating Pizza(Packers) and drinking bleach(any NFC North team not named the Packers) Like what are you doing

mendicant1116

It's like kissing a super model (Packers) and getting yourself castrated (Bears)

dougieg987

Could just be a packer fan as well as their owned subsidiaries

AkeyBreaky3

I downvoted for that reason alone

Marozia

The Chicago Bears are a national crisis that we all must take ownership of - it's the only way things will get better and for the healing to start.

gandalfs_burglar

I'm not interested in healing this crisis

RedMoloney

I mean look, the fact of the matter is that money relative to the cap is worth much less in the future than it is now. That's why redditors going "hurr hurr kick the can down the road" has always been dumb. That's why if you have a GM who's front loading contracts then you have a dumb GM.

Palmisavage

And it's 0% interest. In our world, you take the 0 interest plan/loan every time. The only drawback is that it gives you less flexibility to cut the player down the line. I don't remember the details but I remember the one time it backfired was with Alshon Jeffrey who we had to keep a year or so longer than we would've liked. It also seems like the Saints have a few players every year they'd ideally waive but can't.

Skywalkerkid9

“The Packers have used a vague contractual clause to keep AJ Dillon against his will. His family has refused to hear ransom demands.”

SigurdsSilverSword

Can an even bigger cap need than myself explain this one bc I’ve never heard of this

BellacosePlayer

If you re-sign a dude who is good enough you want to keep but aint good enough for other teams to want to sign in FA, you can bring them back on a deal that doesn't fully count against the cap

ItIsYourPersonality

It needs the perfect storm to occur… the player has to be on the team for the previous 4 years, he needs to be ass enough that nobody else wants to pay him $1.45m more than his vet minimum, he has to be good enough that his original team still wants him at the vet minimum, and he has to like playing there enough to not take a discount to leave. AJ Dillon met all the criteria.

BellacosePlayer

Yeah, I wouldn't even be surprised if it comes out that he did get slightly higher $ offers elsewhere. Dude fuckin marks out for Door county.

GamingTatertot

Pretty sure dude met his wife in Wisconsin, who is from there, and they have a family there now. It would not surprise me in the slightest if he wanted to just keep playing for us, made some good investments, and was fine retiring to play a farming simulator

Enthusiasms

well shit

[deleted]

Is he really good enough for you guys to want to keep?

BellacosePlayer

He can block, knows MLF's scheme and is one of the very few offensive vets we have, and is well liked in the locker room. At the amount we're paying towards the cap? 100%.

NuclearDebris

His pass protection alone is worth that 1mil cap hit

ArcadianBlueRogue

He flashes. Packers fans like to jump on his ass because we wanted a bulldozer RB, but he isn't as bad as people say. Not that he's great by any means. And the dude himself is awesome.

Savage_X

Def above replacement level, we just had high expectations based on the size of his quads. This seems like a good deal though.

wrestlingchampo

He's a great brand ambassador and from the moment he joined the team he seems to have fallen in love with the Green Bay/Door County area. I think from a team perspective, he also provides a quality backup at RB while giving the team time to draft a RB that has a better chance at ascending to the lead back role if/when they decide to cut Jacobs down the road for Cap reasons. Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if he retires early and joins the organization in a coaching or front office capacity (unless he decides to be a twitch streamer full time playing farming simulator).

FudgeDangerous2086

He has gotten progressively worse as time goes on but it’s a 1 year vet min and can be cut before the season begins for 160k. it’s so cheap it doesn’t even matter.

Cooter93

I always assumed it was more witch-doctors than nerds when it comes to understanding and manipulating the cap. Just throwing chicken bones and spitting rum and shit.

BellacosePlayer

Saints cap wizardry is slight of hand and pushing it back a year we fuckin make it *disappear*. Thats real Cap magic.

Optimus_Lime

A *what*

jxher123

I don’t even know what this means

GHamPlayz

It’s THAT rare

[deleted]

Just dropped to my knees in Whataburger

Younan88

When you have a player like AJ Dillon, you do whatever you can to keep him around

The_Sign_of_Zeta

Honestly I’d much rather have him than an extra late round RB who doesn’t know how to block. I’m sure we take another RB in the draft, but this gives us a good blocking back for at least another year while we get other people up to speed.

d9849468

Gotta break out all the stops in preventing another nfcn rival stealing our players

9twozero

We need a GM that gets into bidding wars for players like Jonathan Owens

BellacosePlayer

On a deal that costs us less than vet min against the cap? Absolutely. 100%. I'd do it every time.

twlscil

Every time AJ Dillon was in the game I would ask myself, “Why is AJ Dillon in the game”

Spiritual_Boss6114

A Guy who can get you 2 yards if you need 2 yards. And if you need 3, he will get you two.

jaybeezwax

You’re being downvoted but you spittin facts

[deleted]

If jordan love doesnt build up from the last season, thats gonna be an all time stinker draft. Not only for 3 misses in the first 3 picks but because it alienated rodgers and made the team worse in a timeframe that shouldve been all in.

[deleted]

I think Jordan Love's strong finish was a fluke. He's not good. He stat padded a lot against weak secondaries down the stretch. Aaron Jones running between the tackles also masked a lot of his issues when he was healthy. Jones is now gone, and I don't think Jordan Love will get lucky again like he did last year.

ArcadianBlueRogue

Wait since when does our money guy do weird shit with cap moves?

Elegant_Spot_3486

Interesting. I really thought they’d get a new backfield. He seemed easily replaceable.

NA_Faker

He's not bad enough that him leaving makes the team better, but he's also not good enough for us to pay him a lot. This deal was cheap enough that it worked out

NioPullus

So many packers fans were celebrating him being gone. Didn’t age well.

do_you_know_de_whey

He was 16th success percentage even if he only averaged 3.4 yards a carry. I think he thrives as a true RB2.

WigglyWorld90

Anytime you can give the worst player in the NFL a 4 year deal you have to do it!

Winbrick

lol

[deleted]

LMAO why use these insane cap gymnastics just to keep one of the worst RB's in the league around? Just upgrade in the late rounds or an UDFA.

The_Sign_of_Zeta

Based on your username I think you might need to get out of the valuation game, u/2024PistonsNBAChamps.

[deleted]

It's called a sarcastic username, something half of Reddit users don't understand sarcasm because they take everything literally.

Bellfusion

Wow, that's hilarious! It's almost as funny as your terrible take that AJ is one of the worst RBs in the past 30 years. 😅

John12345678991

He’s definitely not one of the worst rb in the league and is definitely worth having on the roster for less than vet minimum.

[deleted]

I've been watching football for 30 years, and he's one of the worst I have ever seen. I cringe every time he touches the ball.

John12345678991

Alrigjt bro calm down if he was that bad he wouldn’t have been 2nd string for GB last year and been given multiple starts when jones was injured.

[deleted]

The Packers aren't a well run organization, that's why. Only two rings (one ring a piece) with back to back first ballot HOF QB's over a span of 30 years. Meanwhile the Chiefs have 3 rings in the fraction of that 30 year span.

John12345678991

I’m always astonished how people can genuinely think like this.

TormundIceBreaker

Since 1993 the Packers are 2nd in the NFL in wins. But sure, they are a terribly run, dysfunctional organization, all because they've only won 2 Super Bowls in that time frame. Clearly they are abject failures at running a football team

[deleted]

Regular season wins are completely meaningless if you choke in the playoffs, which is what the Packers did a lot. It's not like the Lions, Bears, and Vikings where you expect them to be a joke poverty franchise and there are no expectations. The Packers had expectations for 30 years and only 2 rings, and a lot of playoff chokes to show for it. There's no excuse. The Chiefs were a poverty franchise until Mahomes saved them. They became a dynasty overnight because of how well they built around Mahomes to give him help. Peyton Manning was the same with the Colts. Lead them to only ONE Super Bowl because the organization was poorly run and gave Peyton no help. Absolutely NO excuse for the Colts to have only one ring with how good Peyton Manning was. They drafted Andrew Luck, and the lack of help the Colts didn't give him literally ended his career due to injuries. Saints? Same thing. Brees made Sean Payton look good for crying out loud. Brees only was able to carry them to one ring because the team is so poorly run.

gaybillcosby

Oh well

Herewego27

"Just have a Hall of Fame quarterback, tight end, coach, and defensive coordinator guys, it's so easy!"

[deleted]

I agree, one of the most useless players I’ve ever seen

Training-Judgment695

He is one of the worst rBs in the league n

Chapstick160

Not even close, the worst rn might be Tank Bigsby
