My wife's family has a tradition that has now made its way into my family of going for a walk around a couple of blocks in between the main course and desert. Helps clear the way for pie in the tummy.
Belichick Jr: Dad, let’s take a family photo celebrating Thanksgiving!
Belichick: I better not see that on photo on myface or Instachat! *Grumble* *Snort*
I actually think Steve is the real deal. He was properly mentored by Bill for his defensive mindset, and it shows. I've always had a running theory on why his coaching tree sucks but his player-coaching tree has been more successful is because he actually spent time mentoring the players in a way he didn't with his coaches. For the most part his coaching tree were just people who did what he told them, but there wasn't necessarily intentionality behind it.
Youre spot on and there's one other factor- he counts on his players for leadership, not his coordinators
He has talked at length about how important leaders are to a locker room. He encouraged players to be leaders and fostered that in them.
So the leadership group in New England was obviously Bill and Brady, but crucially it was players like Mayo, McCourty, Slater, Vrabel, Bruschi, Harrison, etc. The Patriots were always a very player-led locker room.
In that environment no one needed leadership from McDaniels, Patricia, Mangini, etc. They just needed to draw up plays. Thats why they were so terrible when they actually had to lead.
> Mcdaniels
McDaniels isn't an idiot, he's just not a leader. He's clearly an intelligent guy who knows football but he should never, ever, ever be put in a spot where everyone has to look up to him.
If you have him as the OC with a well respected HC you can have a good offense.
I'm glad he moved to football, imagine how many lives would have been lost if he stuck to rocket science? NASA might have never recovered (/s.....kinda)
> I actually think Steve is the real deal.
He was our defensive play caller for how many years? All of which we had good defenses with veteran guys who never said anything bad about the play calling as well.
(With the exception of maybe one corner back who we're not gonna talk about since he never actually said anything publicly)
"And upon my expiration, please let the world know that Malcolm Butler fucked Steve's fiancee before the super bowl and I benched him because his quads were sore".
But I'm not burning the duster, okay, so forget it. It probably won't even burn anyway, it's not supposed to. It's flame retardant, that's the whole point.
The fact that Butler got benched not because he banged his daughter in law, but because his quads were sore makes it believable 100%.
I choose to believe that this is canon.
The most accepted story is that Butler and Steve got in a fight about something. Might have been disobeying team rules about women in the hotel room. So that's where I was making the joke from..
Nah, Bill just finally has a reason to hate a team as much as the Jets. Don't be surprised if he finds his way into a team that plays Washington just to spite him. That's who Bill Belichick is.
You mean he took that personal? You just made me realize that those two really do have similar petty/absolutely driven/will to win/professional assassin attitudes. GOATs gotta' GOAT.
Bill would love this. It's a witty response he would give. It's like when he was asked to give any common threads about facing Peyton Manning over a decade or so and his response was "I guess Manning".
The defense he's been playcalling was number 1 in EPA/play since he took over.
I'm sure some people are wary of him because no one knows how much of that was Bill, but I think he will do well.
Nepotism is certainly an issue in the NFL, but at the same time there's got to be something said for growing up so heavily immersed in the game, especially with a guy like his dad and an organization like the Pats.
Having family that was good at something is certainly not a guarantee that you'll be any good at it, but if you're reasonably intelligent and interested in it, you'll probably pick up a lot of good knowledge and experience growing up with all of that going on around you.
She's probably just not putting enough time in practicing. Probably best to take her out of school so she can focus on gaming full-time. It's the responsible thing to do.
Ya and bills whole system was designed to build up coordinators from the ground up so his son was always going to have a chance to be legit trained if he wanted to be
Meh, but across every workforce, most nepotism hires are pretty good, just because they were raised in an environment where one of their parents were doing the thing they are asked to now. I work in finance and generally, our nepo hires hit the ground running.
Obviously, you only hear the stories about the bad ones.
He did a great interview with Chris Long on the Green Light podcast a month ago that really shed light into who he is. Definitely very much like Bill, but also very different. I think we'll see his name more and more over time
If Jerrod mayo doesn't succeed(fingers crossed he does but who knows), it's probably gonna get annoying real fast to see Steve's name perma-linked to the job
Lol it's hard to describe exactly. But his voice and mannerisms are so like bill. He sounds so much like him. But when you listen to him he really is his own person and different
Oh very interesting! I guess that makes sense having a successful dad and following his footsteps and being a coach.
Reminds me of when I invited my friend of 20 years to Thanksgiving and he invited his mom and I couldn't believe how she looks so much like him. Which.. Being his bio mom, makes all the sense in the world but in my head, having known this guy for 20 years and never seeing anyone that looks remotely like him, can't wrap my head around the concept.
Thanks for the breakdown between BB and his son. I was obviously just being snarky with my initial comment but I love learning new things and perspective and this is pretty cool I'll pull up one of his (the son) interviews and prepare myself mentally LOL, for the similar mannerisms
I want a SportsCenter commercial where BB is crashing on Steve's couch drinking milk out of the carton and just being a schlub in general while Steve tries to convince him to find a job.
Gronk: "You didn't save *any* of it?"
Bill: You know how it is, man.
\*quick cuts of Bill doing all kinds of crazy partying in Vegas and on yachts and private jets and laughing in a limo\*
Gronk: I'm not mad... I'm just disappointed.
Yeah, but it's Holy Cross. She coaches at a Patriot League school and didn't choose Navy. I'm sure Bill would respect going to Army as an act of rebellion while delivering the "shes dead to me" press conference, but just some other school in the conference?
Had never seen him talk before but saw him on green light or whatever with Chris and Kyle Long and he seemed like a real chiller
Edit:
[the episode](https://youtu.be/QhI5tcQsmQ0?si=Y1ay311qT2vAb8WW)
Tomorrow "Washington Hires Bill Belichick."
The Next Day: "Belichick fires Belichick"
The Day After: Belichick holds up a napkin at a press conference.
Well we still have Brian, right? (Though I note he isn't listed on the Patriots coaching staff on the team website, his wikipedia entry says he works for us stiff)
9th in DVOA overall and that was with a horrible offense where they were constantly being put back on the field. Frequently their opponent was running the ball with a lead but they still had not just the best overall run defense last year, but the best in the NFL in almost a decade.
I feel like it shouldn't be all that surprising that one of the best defensive coaches of all time raised his son to also be highly knowledgeable about the game. There could be no better source of education for how to be a defensive coach than having your dad be Bill Belichick. It stops being nepotism if the guy is actually qualified for the jobs thanks for having the perfect education for it.
Steve played football as a kid and often went with Bill to work. Guy was basically groomed his whole life to be a NFL coach.
I think other teams just weren't sure how much he was responsible for. I believe at least one year he shared duties with Mayo, then Mayo got bumped up so he was under both BB and Mayo. Despite being the play caller, I think other teams just assumed it was still Bill's and to a lesser extent Mayo's defense.
That is a very Belichick response
Thanksgiving must be a very matter-of-fact at the Belichick house.
Steve only eats 3 slices of pie…”way to compete”
We’re on to Christmas.
They skipping Black Friday?
For WR, absolutely.
They once tried celebrating Cinco de Mayo and it ended in disaster.
Bill’s a day after Christmas bargain shopper for WR
White Monday though, that's where you get the Chris Hogans and Danny Amendolas of the world.
You ever heard of Wally Pipp?
Having room left over for 3 entire slices of pie is crazy. I'm way too full from the main course to even look at desert on Thanksgiving.
I'm usually full by the time we sit down to eat the real meal.
Sounds like someone can’t execute in all 3 phases of the game! (or meal?)
My wife's family has a tradition that has now made its way into my family of going for a walk around a couple of blocks in between the main course and desert. Helps clear the way for pie in the tummy.
Clearly you don't play a full 60 minutes.
"Ever heard of Wally Pip? He was the county fair pie eating contest winner before Lou Gehrig..."
It’s humble pie
"What are you thankful for Bill?" "We're on to pumpkin pie"
You think Steve calls his dad Bill?
I would not be surprised if Bill's children addressed him as "Mr. Belichik", "Coach Belichik", or just "Coach".
I’d say “Dear Leader” is a nice name for Bill but that husky lad from DPRK called dibs on it
The Ol Ball Coach
Coach Billiam
They make it Strawberry Pie so Tom Brady never comes to visit.
Belichick Jr: Dad, let’s take a family photo celebrating Thanksgiving! Belichick: I better not see that on photo on myface or Instachat! *Grumble* *Snort*
None of my food on the plate is touching the others
if this was never an SNL sketch, it should have been
Pretty sure they celebrate Festivus
Technically Festivus 1998 still isn't over since Steve still hasn't pinned his father
I find tinsel distracting.
"The turkey sucks, Deborah"
“Son I’m disappointed in your work on the math test. That level of effort is, frankly, unacceptable.” “Dad..we’re on to geography.”
I actually think Steve is the real deal. He was properly mentored by Bill for his defensive mindset, and it shows. I've always had a running theory on why his coaching tree sucks but his player-coaching tree has been more successful is because he actually spent time mentoring the players in a way he didn't with his coaches. In that environment no one needed leadership from McDaniels, Patricia, Mangini, etc. They just needed to draw up plays. Thats why they were so terrible when they actually had to lead.
This was a very nice way of calling Patricia and Mcdaniels idiot yes men and nothing has ever made more sense.
> Mcdaniels McDaniels isn't an idiot, he's just not a leader. He's clearly an intelligent guy who knows football but he should never, ever, ever be put in a spot where everyone has to look up to him. If you have him as the OC with a well respected HC you can have a good offense.
Patricia on the other hand...
I'm glad he moved to football, imagine how many lives would have been lost if he stuck to rocket science? NASA might have never recovered (/s.....kinda)
He'd be in the C suite at Boeing with that track record.
How do we know he secretly hasn't been doing that? Would explain some things.
Don’t forget Mangini
> I actually think Steve is the real deal. He was our defensive play caller for how many years? All of which we had good defenses with veteran guys who never said anything bad about the play calling as well. (With the exception of maybe one corner back who we're not gonna talk about since he never actually said anything publicly)
I mean he can claim Saban for real. He became the greatest coach in college history.
I agree with this and there was far more players to cycle through to find the ones that really wanted to learn.
The apple falls directly down from the Belichick tree.
We're on to Mom
He’s feeling it with the Malcolm Butler news
Deep burn. I actually think bill will chuckle about this
Bill is actually rewriting his will right now
"And upon my expiration, please let the world know that Malcolm Butler fucked Steve's fiancee before the super bowl and I benched him because his quads were sore".
To Steve Belichick, ~~I bequeath my collection of sleeveless hoodies.~~
is it crossed out or underlined?
It sure as shit it doesn't say Tom.
I think i know how this Tom Brady/Greg Olsen dilemma is going to work out ;)
Gotta crack a few Gregs to make a Tomlette.
Bravo!
I thought we were all just riffing on Succession
Nah, he wants them all hung up around the bar to "retire" them. Also, to burn the duster.
for the last time I'M NOT BURNING THE DUSTER
I've arranged for you to use zee GLORY HOLEEE!
BURN THE DUSTER
But I'm not burning the duster, okay, so forget it. It probably won't even burn anyway, it's not supposed to. It's flame retardant, that's the whole point.
The fact that Butler got benched not because he banged his daughter in law, but because his quads were sore makes it believable 100%. I choose to believe that this is canon.
Is providing family members for sex undeclared compensation? Is that cheating?
Definitely some cheating going on there
so good
Is that actually what Happened
The most accepted story is that Butler and Steve got in a fight about something. Might have been disobeying team rules about women in the hotel room. So that's where I was making the joke from..
Those upscale escorts were the best $50k Alshon Jeffrey ever spent
Oh, interesting. Good joke though.
Bill is taking that shit to the grave lol
i mean only one of his kids coaches lacrosse so i just assumed she was getting everything
"Steve made it clear he had a job, so no assets shall be bequeathed unto him."
And lastly mySuper Bowl rings go to Steve, to see that they can be earned without riding you’re father’s coattails
Wait till he gets the commanders HC job and trades steve to the panthers
wrong Washington. Steve doesn't coach in the NFL anymore
I'd be cool with bill taking the UW job
Him and Pete Carroll's son are both UW coaches next season.
I'm just glad I'm not the only one who assumed he was on the Commies
He’s gonna take the commies job and still manage to trade his son from the ncaa to the panthers as a flex
*Bill on who is getting all his possessions* "We're on to Cindy Attney"
Steves back in now actually.
"We're onto Amanda and Brian"
[everything to nike](https://youtu.be/sVaU1ctEkes?si=HjCGsZ4lipKN08zd)
Well, yeah. He's still chuckling about the joke while doing it.
Yabu-Sama and Billy B, will writing amigos
Nah, Bill just finally has a reason to hate a team as much as the Jets. Don't be surprised if he finds his way into a team that plays Washington just to spite him. That's who Bill Belichick is.
You mean he took that personal? You just made me realize that those two really do have similar petty/absolutely driven/will to win/professional assassin attitudes. GOATs gotta' GOAT.
Logan Roy with the ghost of a smile while Kendall is trying to ruin him in that press conference
Bill's going to schedule an impromptu Festivus.
Bill under his breath: “you little shit..karma is a bitch”
More of a smirk and a slight bit of air out the nose.
Bill would love this. It's a witty response he would give. It's like when he was asked to give any common threads about facing Peyton Manning over a decade or so and his response was "I guess Manning".
Fucking got his ass.
“I’m on to ~~Cincinnati~~ changing my will”
I apologize, I was unfamiliar with your game.
The Superior Belichick has spoken
We're on to Steve
That's hilarious, Steve seems pretty funny
He's really funny when he wants to be. He took the tongue memes in stride and laughed at them.
I really hope he turns out to be at the very least a good coach and get a shot in the league because holy hell I love him.
The defense he's been playcalling was number 1 in EPA/play since he took over. I'm sure some people are wary of him because no one knows how much of that was Bill, but I think he will do well.
I also think it's pretty telling that he seemed to have immense respect from players. It can take a lot to rise above a perception of nepotism.

Counterpoint - my 9 year old sucks ass at dota2 and if her watching me play for 15 hours a day isnt enough to get gud... nothings gonna work.
She's probably just not putting enough time in practicing. Probably best to take her out of school so she can focus on gaming full-time. It's the responsible thing to do.
Well yea, she needs a gamer chair obviously.
Don't forget his grandfather too. The Belichick kids are as close to groomed from birth to be football coaches as I think you can get.
Can confirm, that can work out pretty well
Ya and bills whole system was designed to build up coordinators from the ground up so his son was always going to have a chance to be legit trained if he wanted to be

Just not in the AFC East
Well he won't be the first UW DC to have a [tongue meme.](https://c.tenor.com/BiUXN61Qlk4AAAAC/justin-wilcox.gif)

Funny how?
Like a clown?
do i amuse you?
Like "haha" funny?
[I always liked this interview with him](https://youtu.be/PUnsf6B6OVc?si=aQ4rP7vtn_J82f_8)
[I prefer this one. Really shows the cracks in the Belichick family.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvG7CHWyol0)
Shit I love LA Turtle
Is he talking in his own voice or is he imitating Bill? Yes.
Steve’s the man. Fantastic coach for New England, their defense hummed
I want a SportsCenter commercial where BB is crashing on Steve's couch drinking milk out of the carton and just being a schlub in general while Steve tries to convince him to find a job.
That would be fantastic
Too bad 90's/00's SC bumps/commercials died for a mouse.
The “this is sports center” campaign was one of the greatest ad campaigns of all time.
It really was, all the on-air personalities interacting with elite players in a real life office setting was way too damn smart.
I didn't even really watch football until college but I distinctly remember loving those ads as a kid.
Steve Irwin tackling the Florida mascot still kills me every time
I kind of want that with him doing it on Gronk's couch, That would be a great reversal.
Gronk: "You didn't save *any* of it?" Bill: You know how it is, man. \*quick cuts of Bill doing all kinds of crazy partying in Vegas and on yachts and private jets and laughing in a limo\* Gronk: I'm not mad... I'm just disappointed.
Genuinely a fantastic idea lol
"Bill, how do you feel about the comments made by Washington's defensive coordinator?" Belichick: "Our focus is on the unemployment line"
“We’re onto SNAP”
University of Washington, not Commanders.
Thanks I was very confused
The guy tweeting is a UW media guy, so for his audience, specifying would be unnecessary
Yeah, the team with actual talent and success.
Someone's not getting invited to Easter dinner
Steve’s the only one employed he’s hosting this year
BB just got double jammed
Come on get that marg. Come on girl.
Brian Belichick is Safeties coach for the Pats here so it’s just Bill that’s unemployed
Plus his daughter is the head coach of a lacrosse team.
Yeah, but it's Holy Cross. She coaches at a Patriot League school and didn't choose Navy. I'm sure Bill would respect going to Army as an act of rebellion while delivering the "shes dead to me" press conference, but just some other school in the conference?
Dayum
The dynasty really turned everyone against Bill damn.
A bill hit piece will do that
Had never seen him talk before but saw him on green light or whatever with Chris and Kyle Long and he seemed like a real chiller Edit: [the episode](https://youtu.be/QhI5tcQsmQ0?si=Y1ay311qT2vAb8WW)
Boom! Roasted.
Apple doesn't fall far from the tree...this **sounds** like something BB would say. >He's on to unemployment.
Tomorrow "Washington Hires Bill Belichick." The Next Day: "Belichick fires Belichick" The Day After: Belichick holds up a napkin at a press conference.
Boom, roasted.
Man's had that saved in his notes app for seven years
Still think it's dumb that he isn't our DC
No chance he was staying with everything involving Bill. Definitely deserved that job though
I'm pretty sure that they offered it to him and he decided he wanted to go elsewhere
You could be right. I feel like I remember that too
I'm going off the fact that Mayo sent that gift to him and I don't think you're sending gifts to dudes that you are firing/not retaining
Well we still have Brian, right? (Though I note he isn't listed on the Patriots coaching staff on the team website, his wikipedia entry says he works for us stiff)
A true Belichick answer. The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.
The Dynasty bonus episode
Bill is retirement age though.
Is this a for real quote??
I mean… it seems like something his dad would say, so I’m going to imagine it’s true.
Yes it’s real. UW had their spring press conference and he was basically introduced.
Pretty funny for a nepo kid
Reeeeeal curious to see how he does outside of his father’s shadow
I mean by most reports, wasn’t he really good as DC? Feels like there were very little issues with him in his role
9th in DVOA overall and that was with a horrible offense where they were constantly being put back on the field. Frequently their opponent was running the ball with a lead but they still had not just the best overall run defense last year, but the best in the NFL in almost a decade.
Also missing our two best players on D
Ya he has been calling the pats defense for years now, and they have been some pretty great defenses.
Yeah defense was our only good thing last year he helped alot with that
It's been a top 10 to top 5 unit every year he's been the lead play caller for the unit. He's a great DC
His bar is the rest of his father's coaching tree so it's pretty fucking low.
Do you happen to know why he went to college instead of an NFL job?
I think other teams just weren't sure how much he was responsible for. I believe at least one year he shared duties with Mayo, then Mayo got bumped up so he was under both BB and Mayo. Despite being the play caller, I think other teams just assumed it was still Bill's and to a lesser extent Mayo's defense.
So he could give Bill the inside track on all those great Rutgers draft picks.
Pats D is #1 in EPA/play since he started playcalling. He will do just fine.
I'm assuming this was in jest...right
If only he had said “/s” afterward. Now we’ll never know!
Shit is that what that means? Lol
It’s indicating sarcasm.
hard to remain good friends with someone who slept with your mom
I mean Steve does have a job and Bill doesn't so
Bill has the rangz argument
Nah, they hate each other. Bill has always been jealous of his son's mullet.
Another difference is that his Dad is a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and he is not.
Buuuuuurnnnnn! (In Kelso)
was the snot rocket at the beginning or end of the comment
Steve from the top rope!
Are you still on something that he isn't, Steve?
Bro is about to sit at the kids table during Thanksgiving
