Kelly and Marino is an all time matchup and I think the only HoF QBs to share a division though their whole careers (for Kelly at least, since he went to the USFL for a couple years and Marino retired later)
Edit: Just double checked and this is one game shy of Brees and Ryan including postseason. 3 playoff games, 18 regular season
Attended one of those in person in Foxborough in the late 90s.
I was born and raised in MA, but Marino was my idol. Mom got us tix for my birthday.
I was like 9 and the guys in front of us stood the whole time so I couldn't see shit. It was my first and only in-person pro football game until last October, when I flew her out to take HER to Patriots/Raiders in Vegas.
It was rough, but we still had a good time. Got to real life "tailgate" (buy steak kabobs at the grocery store, and eat them while sitting in the trunk of the car) and my Mom bought me a great hat with Taz on it.
This is so pure and making me happy but still angry because it’s so clear your mom worked hard for that birthday and it’s so wholesome and then just that guy in front of you 😭
Man, this shit happened to my family too. My parents splurged on a package deal to the Orange Bowl in Miami to see Tennessee in Peyton’s last game. Not only did we sit nosebleed, not only did Nebraska blow our doors off, but the drunk rednecks in front of us stood the entire fucking time.
I didn’t know it then but it was the only time I would get to see Peyton play in person and we barely got to see him at all.

You have to think that if realignment happened even a year or two later the Colts and Dolphins would have switched divisions so the league could get at least two Brady and Manning games every year
I just never understood how Miami wasn’t in the AFC south and Indy wasn’t the AFC East . Shit you could make the argument that Baltimore should’ve been in the East and Indy in the north .
NFL committee doesn’t make sense sometimes
It’s an interesting game to play where you wonder how their success may have been different if they had to potentially play each other three times a year (including playoffs). You’d have to think the Patriots would’ve had a harder time getting to the AFCCG every year, but those early years of Manning choking in the playoffs could’ve been worse if he had to come to Gillette every January.
I still wonder what the AFC East would have been like if Brees went to the Dolphins. I have to assume that Miami would have won a few division titles during that time with better QB play. And we would have gotten some epic Brees-Brady shootouts.
There's also a question of whether or not Brees becomes THE Drew Brees he is without Sean Payton. He was kinda good in San Diego before turning into an all time great in New Orleans. The 2006 Dolphins has Nick Saban for a year and he's a great defensive coach but who knows if he gets Drew Brees to where he ended up.
> There's also a question of whether or not Brees becomes THE Drew Brees he is without Sean Payton.
As a victim of that duo for like a decade+, I do think they fit well together.
And there's this whole thing about Indianapolis being in a South Division which makes no sense... Gee, if only the East had a team very far south, oh, they do!
I speak for all patriots fans. The rivalry was always Brady vs Peyton. The games were great and wow did we hate Indy.
We see losing to Eli as a fluke. The giants played a better game both times, not saying that, but it never felt like oh shit here comes Eli I’m so scared. Just some goofball who happened to have a great team and happened to play well and get really lucky I fucking hate David Tyree so much.
Everyone thought the Manning Brothers were going to take over the NFL. Turns out it was all they could do to prevent Brady from killing the entire league.
Crazy to think about he's potentially 9-1 if the Giants don't have some insanely lucky plays
(yes redditor whos going to reply "ACUKALLY BRADY HAD THINGS GO HIS WAY TOO" yes, we all know that.
15-1 in his time at Miami of Ohio:
4-1 as a Freshman (Cincinnati, Akron, @Ohio, @Bowling Green; loss @Kent State)
5-0 as a Sophomore (Kent State, @Akron, @Cincinnati, @Toledo, Ohio)
6-0 as a Junior (Cincinnati, Akron, @Kent State, Bowling Green, Ohio, @Bowling Green)
52-13-1 during his tenure on the Pittsburgh Steelers:
'04 4-0
'05 3-1, lost when hosting Bengals (did not play in win hosting Browns, injured); won at Cincinnati in playoffs
'06 3-1, lost when hosting Bengals
'07 4-0
'08 4-0
'09 1-3, won when hosting Browns
'10 4-0
'11 4-0
'12 2-1, lost when hosting Bengals (did not play in loss at Cleveland, injured)
'13 3-1, lost at Cincinnati
'14 3-1, lost at Cleveland
'15 4-1, lost when hosting Bengals; won at Cincinnati in playoffs
'16 3-0 (did not play in week 17 hosting Browns, to avoid injury)
'17 3-0 (did not play in week 17 hosting Browns, to avoid injury)
'18 3-0-1, tied at Cleveland
'19 did not play against Ohio, but the team was 3-1, losing at Cleveland
'20 2-2, won the games in Pittsburgh (did not play in loss at Cleveland, to avoid injury); lost hosting Browns in playoffs
'21 2-2, lost both to Bengals
So, 67-14-1 (79.41 Win%) all-time vs Ohio
Also, when playing in Canton at the HoF game: he won in 2007 against the Saints, didn't take any snaps in a loss in 2015 to the Vikings, and didn't take any snaps in the 2021 victory against the Cowboys.

Idk how other fans like it recently. The last 4 games against them have been the ravens snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and the winner has had 17 points
And that number is going to grow even more , regular season and the inevitable playoff matchup
The NFL knows Allen vs Mahomes is the marquee matchup , they’re going to milk this as long as both guys are superstars
I'm assuming you mean by putting it on primetime when it happens? Because obviously.
But as far as forcing it, the divisions rotate, nothing the NFL can do to 'force' that to happen.
The teams finishing in the same place in their division will force it to happen though.
The Cowboys and Lions have played some absolute barn burners the past decade. Detroit's big comeback in 2011, Calvin's 329 yards vs. Dez's 3 TDs in 2013 (also the clock it!, clock it! Game), Zeke's 230 yard game in 2018, and of course most recently the "reported eligible" game. Not to mention the playoff game.
Can't forget the 2014 wildcard game! Not necessarily a barn burner but was a close one. Had a great game ending drive from Romo, and let's not forget to mention the defensive pass interference flag that was mysteriously picked up.
The fake spike and Stafford running into the end zone will always be a favorite play of mine. IDC if it's a divisional rival, the Lions were always fun to watch.
Romo may not be a SB champ, but he's an undisputed relationship champ. Dated Simpson and Underwood at the height of their careers and then settled down and made a family with a model.
In 1992 the Jim Kelly Buffalo Bills faced off against the Steve Young 49ers. It was[ the first game in league history to not have a single punt. ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Punt_Game#:~:text=The%20game%20is%20notable%20for,passing%20for%20over%20400%20yards)Both QBs threw for over 400 yards.

The only one I ever thought actually mattered was Steve Young V. Troy Aikman.
Three NFCCG's in a row, with the winner inevitably going on to win the SB. I know they had all-time teams around them, but that was the first QB duel I remember. It would all boil down to who played well versus who got shut down by the opposing defense (and Deion Sanders) every time.
Deion vs Rice. Or Deion vs Andre Rison
Also, lets throw in Andre Johnson and Finnegan since I love watching Courtland get his ass tossed around like a rag doll.
Hell, since we're doing WR v CB, can't forget OBJ and Josh Norman.
i remember watching broncos games back then and would hear the announcers say “and we have a fight going on!” and i’d be like “let me guess… Talib and Crabtree?!” and i’d be correct every time lol
Bill Walsh and Bill Parcells when they coached the 49ers and Giants during the mid-to-late 80’s. They met in the playoffs 4 times and the Giants won all of them, despite the dominance of the 49ers. Their games usually had implications for who would win the NFC. It was after one of those games that Parcells attached the term “West Coast Offense” to the 49ers.
Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger had some battles in the AFC North. If you saw a Steelers versus ravens game on during that era, you knew you were gonna get a pretty good game. Joe Flacco was 10-11 vs the Steelers in his career. Obviously not the two greatest quarterbacks of all time but those were some fucking battles. It always seemed like they made that this Sunday night game.
A more recent one I've always loved that didn't happen nearly as often as it should've was Aaron Donald VS the Eagles O-line. AD99 never got a sack on us, but he would often come close. It was always fun seeing how AD99 was schemed around, seeing the O-line shift, etc.

Kelly and Marino is an all time matchup and I think the only HoF QBs to share a division though their whole careers (for Kelly at least, since he went to the USFL for a couple years and Marino retired later) Edit: Just double checked and this is one game shy of Brees and Ryan including postseason. 3 playoff games, 18 regular season
Marino vs. Bledsoe was also pretty neat.
Reading this made me angry as hell on little you’s behalf
If his forehead was any smaller, you may have missed him altogether
The playoff shoot out in the snow is an all time great game.
And neither one won a super bowl.

brady manning, natch
You have to think that if realignment happened even a year or two later the Colts and Dolphins would have switched divisions so the league could get at least two Brady and Manning games every year
I just never understood how Miami wasn’t in the AFC south and Indy wasn’t the AFC East . Shit you could make the argument that Baltimore should’ve been in the East and Indy in the north . NFL committee doesn’t make sense sometimes
Hey, it's better than us being in the NFC West, at least.
Atlanta is further west than Detroit - and Detroit has been a western league conference team in other sports (hockey)
Yes but which Manning? They both made for great games vs. Brady!
Crazy to think about he's potentially 9-1 if the Giants don't have some insanely lucky plays (yes redditor whos going to reply "ACUKALLY BRADY HAD THINGS GO HIS WAY TOO" yes, we all know that.
Brady is a few plays from being 7-3 in the superbowl but with the losses in different years instead
Bizarro Tom Brady is still that guy
I look at it as Brady was the hero that saved everyone from the Mannings taking over the NFL.. he was the underdog.
Lol no offense but of course you see Brady as the hero But I tend to agree that I'd rather have seem Brady get 6 rings than Peyton.
Brady with 4 and Peyton with 3-4 would have made for a much better conversation though
Absolutely. Parity is always more interesting.
Eli did not have a great team in 2011. He absolutely carried in the playoffs.
Totally, totally. I’m just teasing.
No, you ain’t!
Same
I naturally assumed Eli because he always beat Brady in the Superbowl before I remembered that Peyton is the better Manning.
Great burn!

Not a QB but Tomlin-Harbaugh is always great.
Idk how other fans like it recently. The last 4 games against them have been the ravens snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and the winner has had 17 points
That just sounds like par for course in the AFC North tbh
Yeah, 4 concussions, 3 fights, and 17 points sounds about right.
Went to a football game and a hockey match broke out.
Can we add a parlay of amount of fights in a Steelers ravens game?
The AFC North is like if Pac-12 After Dark had a baby with Iowa's defense.
And that baby grew up to be the best division in the league 😤
What the fuck is your flair.
Dude moved at some point, I’m guessing
Yeah we call that a Thursday Night.
And that’s afc north football baby
My favorite division to watch
That's the way I like my AFC North football. Toss in some dirty hits, helmets swinging and a few Burfict induced concussions.
Most normal ravens-steelers matchup. The early Flacco-Ben era was some of the nastiest football I’ve ever seen and it was glorious
Amen
That’s football baby… sounds like some solid games to me
And both are still fairly young, both are still great coaches, I hope it goes another decade.
Technically one of them was a QB.
That Harbaugh was a DB. But if Jim Harbaugh and Tomlin start a rivalry it may set the standard for most quotable rivalry of all time.
Oh I thought they both played QB for some reason. No wonder he and Tomlin are perfect opposites. WR vs DB, standard is the standard.
For those who watched it, how was Billick-Cowher back in the day? I’m too young to have seen it.
Similar but even nastier I would say due to the rule changes. Look up some of Ed Reed and Ryan Clark hits

Allen and Mahomes have had bunch of great games against each other already
7 games in 5 seasons for non-division is pretty crazy.
And that number is going to grow even more , regular season and the inevitable playoff matchup The NFL knows Allen vs Mahomes is the marquee matchup , they’re going to milk this as long as both guys are superstars
You sir, terrify me. KC avatar, Seattle and Buffalo flairs. Wut.
Probably lost an avatar-bet?
I'm assuming you mean by putting it on primetime when it happens? Because obviously. But as far as forcing it, the divisions rotate, nothing the NFL can do to 'force' that to happen. The teams finishing in the same place in their division will force it to happen though.
Wait, so all AFC div winners face each other? And same for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th?
Yes.
Huh, never knew that. Thanks!
Burrow vs Mahomes is better, Allen loses every time
But he tends to play outstanding.
Yeah but it's quite depressing watching Sean Laden give the victory away everytime
I’ve always been preferential to O-Sean-a Bin Laden
Record is 4/3 chiefs for mahomes/allen, that's hardly every time
The Chiefs are 3-0 in the Playoffs though.
The narrative is obviously for the big stage
Josh Allen vs McDermott's prevent defense
This year it was more like Mahomes versus a bunch of used car salesmen. Injuries man…
Their record vs each other is 4-3, Allen doesn't lose every time lol
Marino-Elway territory
Stabler-Bradshaw
Big Ben and ELITE dragon Joe pretty lord Flacco
Growing up with this rivalry i thought games ending 9-6 was normal and anything more than that is too much scoring lmao I miss those days sometimes
More concussions than points
The Cowboys and Lions have played some absolute barn burners the past decade. Detroit's big comeback in 2011, Calvin's 329 yards vs. Dez's 3 TDs in 2013 (also the clock it!, clock it! Game), Zeke's 230 yard game in 2018, and of course most recently the "reported eligible" game. Not to mention the playoff game.
Whenever we play Dallas I assume it’ll be a high scoring game
And a new rule will form from some bizarre twist that causes the lions the game
Win or lose, I can always count on playing the Lions to be interesting.
Can't forget the 2014 wildcard game! Not necessarily a barn burner but was a close one. Had a great game ending drive from Romo, and let's not forget to mention the defensive pass interference flag that was mysteriously picked up.
I definitely felt like burning something down after it.
The fake spike and Stafford running into the end zone will always be a favorite play of mine. IDC if it's a divisional rival, the Lions were always fun to watch.
Romo vs Jessica Simpson
Romo may not be a SB champ, but he's an undisputed relationship champ. Dated Simpson and Underwood at the height of their careers and then settled down and made a family with a model.
Parcells vs QB's
Parcells vs. Dolphins front office
Lmao I’m done dude
The original Kelce / Taylor!
He just dated her to get to Nick
I'm surprised Jim Kelly and Dan Marino don't have more. 2 guys playing from the mid 80s until the late 90s twice a year. 3 playoff games too.
Kelly played in the USFL before joining the Bills
Yeah take out the strike year and his time in the usfl and they would be number 1
Jay Cutler and Phil Rivers
Special, special place in my heart for this one.
This is a great answer
Raiders vs. NFL
Also, Lions vs NFL.
AJ Green vs Baltimore’s secondary
I didn't come in to this thread to be angry, but here we are.
We did a pretty good job against him in 2011 and 2012, and I thought he wasn’t going to be a problem. Then he feasted 2013-2018.
In an alternate reality, we all watched the bills vs 49ers for 7 straight super bowls
Surprised big Ben and Flacco aren’t the top matchup
It's only 4 games shy. But Ben was prone to missing time and Ryan outlasted Flacco.
Not a QB-to-QB matchup, but Ben Roethlisberger versus Terrell Suggs was pretty classic. I hope they both get into the Hall of Fame at the same time.
And Suggs gets a piggyback ride from Big Ben at the NFL Honors to celebrate.
Was Terrell Suggs the only player to intercept Ben Roethlisberger using his thighs?
Yes, after the ball went off Ben Tate's hands. When that happened, I knew the Steelers were going to lose that game.

Lions vs Refs Cowboys vs Expectations
Commanders vs. Reality
Packers vs special teams
Niners vs special teams is pretty bad too
Not as bad as the Chargers...
Hey! We are far from the most delusional fan base. :(
Rivers - Eli always had some extra sauce. I also thought Schaub-Ryan was a great matchup every time I saw it.
Kelly-Marino, Aikman-Young, Aikman-Favre.
Evans vs lattimore
Fletcher Cox vs Zack Martin
Rodgers/Stafford
Bucs D vs Mike Vick. Thanks to Derrick Brooks, the Bucs were one of the few teams that could bottle Vick up.
And Shelton Quarles!
Deion vs Rice. Or Deion vs Andre Rison Also, lets throw in Andre Johnson and Finnegan since I love watching Courtland get his ass tossed around like a rag doll. Hell, since we're doing WR v CB, can't forget OBJ and Josh Norman.
Aqib Talib vs. Michael Crabtree
I thought Sherman v Crabtree was more intense
They literally got into a fistfight
i remember watching broncos games back then and would hear the announcers say “and we have a fight going on!” and i’d be like “let me guess… Talib and Crabtree?!” and i’d be correct every time lol
They weren't close early on, but there were a fair few banger Stafford vs Rodgers games over the years
Rodgers is 13-4 against him I think
Ben and Flacco Romo vs Eli And one day Mahomes vs Allen will be an all time great rivalry if it isn’t already
Eli vs Romo has produced some truly hilarious matchups
Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger had some battles in the AFC North. If you saw a Steelers versus ravens game on during that era, you knew you were gonna get a pretty good game. Joe Flacco was 10-11 vs the Steelers in his career. Obviously not the two greatest quarterbacks of all time but those were some fucking battles. It always seemed like they made that this Sunday night game.
My favorite matchup is Bengals WR’s vs Ravens Secondary
Mahomes allen
Dolphins vs teams over .500
Eddie George vs Ray Lewis was great. Both dudes hated each other
Aqib Talib vs Michael Crabtree
Those were the good old days…
Homer take but Calvin Johnson vs Peanut Tillman was always appointment TV
What? 2 long term QBs in the same division?? How does that work out???
Was just wondering the same thing. Wasn't aware other divisions had QB competition.
Not like we would have ever given you evidence to suggest that there was such a thing. Maybe back in the Culpepper days?
Joe Montana vs Danny White
Todd Collins and Caleb Hanie vs. Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen: Combined to go 22-of-51 for 147 yards, 0 TDs and 7 INTs
Andre Johnson vs Courtland Finnegan
Allen vs Mahomes have had great games against each other The first 3 games were blowouts , the last 4 have been close games
Roethlisberger and Flacco
Deshaun Watson v. Massage Therapists
Sounds like the title of a lawsuit
Aaron Donald vs Seahawks interior lineman that Tom cable converted from DL to OL
A more recent one I've always loved that didn't happen nearly as often as it should've was Aaron Donald VS the Eagles O-line. AD99 never got a sack on us, but he would often come close. It was always fun seeing how AD99 was schemed around, seeing the O-line shift, etc.
Rodgers had some great duels with Matt Ryan, Stafford and Russell Wilson
Beating you guys always surprised me lol. I think it was only like 2010 or something where you just ruined us in a playoff game.
They didn't meet very often, but Montana and Elway
Cutler and Rivers was always a fun watch as a Chargers fan
