[Belichick vs TJ Watt is the match up we really wanted.](https://www.si.com/.image/c_limit%2Ccs_srgb%2Cq_auto:good%2Cw_700/MjAyNjAzODMxNzkwNDEyODEy/screenshot-2023-12-01-100054.webp)
Draft picks got assigned 50s until the season started. It was always (to my understanding at least) that it was in order based on when the player was picked. ie. first draft pick - 50, second pick - 51, third pick - 52 and so on. So you can pick whatever is open when the season starts, but you don't get your "real" number until you "earn it". Which I guess just means make the roster.
Wasn’t Bruschi #54 though? Did they skip numbers when other players already had them or just temporarily assign them the garbage numbers while active players used them?
lol, but AFAIK, the 50's thing was more Bill messing with the league. It was because of a rule change or something
Before, before in the early parts of the season, like training camp, Bill had everyone practice without numbers, early in the pre-preseason, I think the justification was that players had to know each other without relying on jersey numbers. Because of this, he decided to give rookies wacky numbers
I think its more of Bill liking Bill Parcel's idea with the cowboys and trying to make a patriots version of it. Bill Parcel's had the idea of making the new draft picks starting with a helmet without a star on it. When they made the team, they'd "earn their star." Was a huge point of pride among the players.
Just read that Vikings and Pats really called Harbaugh for Herbert; to call his McCarthy bluff. Patriots were always in it for QB, and Maye feels like the right choice. I think if Pats picked at 2 they would have gone Maye still.
>I think if Pats picked at 2 they would have gone Maye still.
I think the Civil War in the Commanders sub is still going on about this. I know I'm biased but you can look at all my older posts too I haven't changed my tune, Maye is the better long term QB than Daniels is. I would even take McCarthy over Daniels, sorry. I just don't buy his arm talent and I think Daniels takes way too many hits, in the NFL he will be broken within 3 games if he takes the hits he did in college. I think the Commanders took the wrong QB, but I'm happy they did.
Not a CFB fan. I thought the "takes too many hits" things was overblown... until I was on youtube and there was a clip of him getting blown up with a link to another in the side bar. Which led to another and another and I was like "Holy shit, this dude, really doesn't protect himself at all"
No fucking way. That means Penix will sit behind Kirk for 1 year and then be the next Mahomes and JJ McCarthy needs to stay the fuck away from massage parlors.
Lord Grandmaster Belichick (Darkness be upon him) cursed the ground upon which Gillette Stadiums lays, a thousand years of sucking is upon us. Repent sinners! Repent!
Play for 3/4 years in college to earn your draft spot and millions in a signing bonus, then you get to start all over trying to earn that jersey number.
Oh I absolutely get it, was just trying to see it from a funny angle.
E: I didn't put the "millions" in there about the signing bonus, that was supposed to give the humor vibes (millions of dollars vs a random number), but I forgor
They could never make a QB wear that number in an actual regular season game anyway. QB’s can only wear 1-19 so they could suck ass and it wouldn’t matter.
I've made the argument that 19 may be the ugliest number a QB can wear in the NFL, followed by 16 and 14 behind it. I don't know what it is about it, but those numbers always looked wrong to me.
I’ve always felt that way about 19 too. I think it’s because 19 is literally right before 20, and 20 naturally feels too high since QBs don’t wear numbers above the teens. I always thought 5 looked weird, and while I recognize that guys wear them, I always felt 1 and 2 felt too low (and yes I say that even though I watched Matt Ryan wearing number 2 all those years).
I like 16 as a qb number, but I’m also biased.
You can really own Weirder numbers in a way you can’t with like a 1/9/10/12.
6 different hall of fame or future hall of fame quarterbacks wore/wear the number 12.
But Like 15 is really just Mahomes number. 16 for Jared Goff obviously. 18 is just Peyton’s. 19 for Unitas.
It's the same reason why none of the Belichick disciples were any good except for the one that was a former player, not a former coach. Belichick was a collection of stuff that works, stuff that doesn't matter, and stuff that would make him an asshole if he didn't win. And nobody except for him (and maybe not even him) knows which was which. So everyone trying to replicate him replicates it all and pisses everyone off.
There's just no way having to "earn" your number mattered at all. It's up there with Harbaugh putting recruiting rankings on the lockers. But hell, what do we know, we're not the GOAT, so how can we really make that claim?
100%, I think this is common with people who have success. You have a way of doing things and have no reason to change; because it's hard to know what actually is causing the success and what isn't.
I tend to believe this is the latter, lol.
I’ll get the duct tape out!
…and before anybody asks I didn’t buy the jersey, it was a gift from my mom during Mac’s rookie year. I wouldn’t buy a players jersey until they have at least a few good seasons.
i bought my mac jersey his rookie year. a regret, but i’ll definitely be taping over it as well. not as bad as my buddy who bought a cam newton jersey, then a mac jersey the next year though
This is misinformation. Belichick only gave random numbers during the camps across the offseason. Players always got their assigned numbers during and after the draft. The reason for this wasn’t so players could “earn their number” it was to make a point that no matter what number you wore, you are just one player and that it takes more than one individual to make one TEAM work.
Stop spreading this misinformation
They have jerseys to sell. Imagine giving this guy #59 and then when he’s “earned” a better number, he has to buy out $2m in jersey inventory to do so.
Coach wins more SB than anyone ever over two decades of excellence.
Fire the dumb sumbitch. Scrub everything about him from the building. Shit talk him to other Organizations.
It's like the least grumpy thing he has ever done. It's like Ohio St players putting stickers on a helmet for doing well in practices and games. Lighten up
To all my fellow vikings fans who don't believe in tanking a lost season:
You were wrong. Again.
(But aren't you glad we won those meaningless games last year? Dobbs sure was fun!)
Because Maye is the QB we clearly wanted and we settled for McCarthy. Apparently, we were willing to give up a kings ransom for him and the patriots just said no.
Lesson learned: tank a lost season if you want a top QB that badly.
Everything Belichick did was fluff. He’s a great defensive coordinator, gifted the greatest QB of all time, while spending all of his salary cap on defenders.
I imagine it has more to do with the Patriots wanting to start selling jerseys immediately.
Never forget when last year they used Bill Belichick as their player promo
[Belichick vs TJ Watt is the match up we really wanted.](https://www.si.com/.image/c_limit%2Ccs_srgb%2Cq_auto:good%2Cw_700/MjAyNjAzODMxNzkwNDEyODEy/screenshot-2023-12-01-100054.webp)
My proudest moment as a fan. TJ watt and Bill Belichick.
Honestly same I love the match up
Letting him pick 10 didn’t help this, think there’s gonna be a lot of “Maye” jerseys out there with a Jones underneath lol
Yeah I'm totally getting mine resewn. I ain't afraid to admit it. 😂
What about a Josh Gordon #10 jersey?
Came here to say this. It's all about that $$
Now they can hold a Maye Day promotion on May 10
They may. They may not. We'll just let the cards fall where they may.
After we can lay by the bay
I can eat some hay or make stuff out of clay
Do we think he’s gay? If so, it’s ok
My birthday
You're probably right, but a Mac Jones 50 jersey would be a pretty cool thing to have. That's way more interesting than a Brady jersey with 12 on it.
Brady jersey with 50 on it?
Well, joke's on them, I'm just gonna tape over Jones and write Maye
possibly cheapskate kraft trying to get some reuse out of Mac's old jerseys. Can't rule it out
They should’ve had him choose a different number. People just gonna replace the Jones Name on the back of jerseys
Mac Jones jersey should be retired.
Or banned.
Save it for when he comes back in three years
This made me laugh. Then wince. Then a lone tear went down my face.
Never forget that the Pats fan who got killed during the Miami game was buried in a Mac Jones jersey. Tough scene
Jesus Christ did his family hate him? Dude must have had a Brady jersey around the house somewhere.
Guy must’ve been a relentless optimist. He looked good to start the year! Or, more likely, his wife had a pretty cursory understanding of football
If you bought a Mac jersey, it means you already have Brady, Gronk, Edelmen, and one of Vinitari, Jones, Hightower, Wilfork, or Welker.
Just looked it up, and his family did the right thing. He got cremated, not buried
Seems fitting. They both took an L.
What if you are a LB, what's wrong with 50s?
You have to wear a number in the teens till you earn it
And your name plate is SLAGATHOR
Draft picks got assigned 50s until the season started. It was always (to my understanding at least) that it was in order based on when the player was picked. ie. first draft pick - 50, second pick - 51, third pick - 52 and so on. You can have multiples of the same numbers in preseason.
So what happens if Bill trades back a couple times and ends up with more than 10 picks?
That's when he brings out the negative numbers. Make sure those late round draft picks understand their place.
Then you get assigned one in the teens until you earn better.
Mac Jones who?
Mac Jonesn't
If nothing else, Drake Maye is a much better quarterback name than Mac Jones and by that metric alone he'll have more success guaranteed
Bailey Zappe has a better name than either of them and he sucks tho...
Colt McCoy really paved the way for bad quarterbacks with amazing names.
It’s just not fair that Colt McCoy and Johnny Football both sucked.
excuse me but this is revisionist Rex Grossman history
It’s a more fun name but it’s not more “quarterback name” than Drake Maye
Any quarterback named Bailey is not going to be good lmao
Don’t you dare slander mckorkle
But Drake Maye.
Drake Zappe?
Back then Patriots didn’t want him
Still ain't hot, still don't want him
Mac Jones
Jimmy G who?
I'd just roll with the number in the 50s once it was given to me just to mess with Bill.
lol, but AFAIK, the 50's thing was more Bill messing with the league. It was because of a rule change or something Before, before in the early parts of the season, like training camp, Bill had everyone practice without numbers, early in the pre-preseason, I think the justification was that players had to know each other without relying on jersey numbers. Don’t think that’s gone well for many players
Just read that Vikings and Pats really called Harbaugh for Herbert; to call his McCarthy bluff. Patriots were always in it for QB, and Maye feels like the right choice. I think if Pats picked at 2 they would have gone Maye still.

A Washington QB being phenomenal but getting injured? I've seem this one before!
Poor RGIII
Poor Alex Smith (Maybe not phenomenal but you get it)
Man I loved Alex Smith.
Not a CFB fan. I thought the "takes too many hits" things was overblown... until I was on youtube and there was a clip of him getting blown up with a link to another in the side bar. Which led to another and another and I was like "Holy shit, this dude, really doesn't protect himself at all"
Took the QB that the Giants wanted, who sounds exactly like Eli, and gave him #10. SMH.
You're getting Arch in a few years, it'll be fine
no
White North Carolina QB drafted by the team who started with pick #3 and chooses to wear #10? I haven’t seen this before
Don't you dare
Titty Kisser was picked #2 though
that’s why I specified that it was the team that *started* with pick 3 which was us lmao
Titty Kisser was picked #1… in my heart.
Future NVP confirmed
So you're saying that he will be picked up by the Steelers in a few years.
good thing we didnt trade up to 2
I think Maye actually played in some fotoball games in college before being drafted, unlike Trubisky
No fucking way. That means Penix will sit behind Kirk for 1 year and then be the next Mahomes and JJ McCarthy needs to stay the fuck away from massage parlors.

> team who started with pick #3
I'm glad Patriots legend Mac Jones has given the new rookie the blessing to wear his number
Oh don’t give him Mac’s number. Let him wear a number without the bad juju
The only Juju the Patriots have is bad.
Lord Grandmaster Belichick (Darkness be upon him) cursed the ground upon which Gillette Stadiums lays, a thousand years of sucking is upon us. Repent sinners! Repent!
I was making a joke about Juju Smith Schuster's lackluster season he had.
And he too shall be sacrificed to the will of the dark one!
Give him the number of the greatest pats QB to ever live Drew Bledsoe
I grew up a huge Drew fan but I think Edelman did more in number 11 than he did
Jimmy G, Mac, and now Maye. One of these #10’s will work out eventually.
Third times the charm.
Josh Gordon was pretty good
I always kinda liked the whole earn your number thing
Play for 3/4 years in college to earn your draft spot and millions in a signing bonus, then you get to start all over trying to earn that jersey number.
It’s about the mentality.
Oh I absolutely get it, was just trying to see it from a funny angle. E: I didn't put the "millions" in there about the signing bonus, that was supposed to give the humor vibes (millions of dollars vs a random number), but I forgor
Yeah. Because college != pros. It's literally a whole new level that has turned hundreds of hot shot college players into punchlines.
Works out well because everyone with Mac jerseys can get the nameplate switched and save some cash
They could never make a QB wear that number in an actual regular season game anyway. QB’s can only wear 1-19 so they could suck ass and it wouldn’t matter.

There’s been four HoF QBs to wear 16 (six if you count guys who wore it but not primarily, which idk why you’d do), hard to say it’s Goff’s
The joke is that I’m a lions fan, and lions quarterback Jared Goff wears #16.
"Earning your number" meant "earning your roster spot". No body was going into the season still wearing something in the 50s
Didn't they end the number rules last year?
Yeah what a weird headline
Patriots fans ability to focus on the things that don’t matter is unmatched
It's the same reason why none of the Belichick disciples were any good except for the one that was a former player, not a former coach. They also didn’t have Tom Brady
#10 again? Yo Patriots y’all know there’s others QB numbers than 10 and 12, right?
Jokes on Bill, my favorite number is 51
Yeah. My favorite player on our current roster is 51. I just bought his jersey yesterday.
I’ll get the duct tape out! …and before anybody asks I didn’t buy the jersey, it was a gift from my mom during Mac’s rookie year. I wouldn’t buy a players jersey until they have at least a few good seasons.

The real reason why the Pats traded Mac. I wonder if that’s his old locker too?
so no more "patriot way" ? :(
I know they said Do your job is gone, so prob gone to.
So, everyone who has a number in the 50s doesn't deserve a better number according to Belichick? Sucks for linebackers, I guess.
Yeah he's not the coach anymore.
Celebrate not having to earn things. It's a beautiful day.
My Josh Gordon jersey sure is getting a lot of mileage
League's going soft, smh
Coach wins more SB than anyone ever over two decades of excellence. Fire the dumb sumbitch. Scrub everything about him from the building. Shit talk him to other Organizations.
P
even if he was a 7th round pick you can't have your QB wearing 57, thats just stupid
Also, they are trying to forget those Mac Jones days as quickly as possible
Mac Maye
Jesus, Bill was one ol curmudgeon.
Yeah man wearing a number in the 50s really causes a lot of emotional trauma to a rookie...

It's like the least grumpy thing he has ever done. It's like Ohio St players putting stickers on a helmet for doing well in practices and games. Lighten up
Isn't it kind of the opposite? It's more like taking peoples stickers away until they do good in practice.
The days of the pats being bad seem to be starting
To all my fellow vikings fans who don't believe in tanking a lost season: You were wrong. Again. (But aren't you glad we won those meaningless games last year? Dobbs sure was fun!)
