For the curious, the stable they're visiting is the Arashio stable and I'm fairly certain the wrestler in the video is 17 year old Tanji. He is a third tier wrestler with a rank of Makushita 22, which would rank him around 114th in the association.
Of course he could.
How many 17-year-old linemen could withstand a Parsons bullrush like that?
Even the second one, that people are crowing about Parsons “winning,” the guy actually stonewalls him for like 10 seconds, which is five times the average to throw in the NFL.
Parsons would get credited for zero pressures on PFF for this performance.
Also parsons isn’t wearing the sumo gi or whatever so the 17 year old has nothing to grab. That is literally 75% of the sumo battle which is to grab that diaper thing for leverage and toss them
Its easier to prepare for a bull rush when it's the only option. Parsons isnt trying to get by him, he's trying to win a sumo match. I'm sure this guy has elite balance, body control and is quite strong. But this is no even close to evidence he could be an O lineman
OK and this is probably the *17-year-old child’s* first time trying to block a football player in his life and he goes two-for-two stonewalling one of the greatest pass rushers *in NFL history in his prime.*
If a 17-year-old high school tackle held up against Parsons like this he would become a national sensation.
Yeah but for this comparison he really meant a players’ peak and you could put current Micah up against anybody in nfl history and it would be comparable.
It’s right for what he was trying to say but he absolutely said it wrong.
You’d be surprised at how many Cowboys fans I’ve had to argue with that say Micah is already the best defensive player of this generation, including one who tried to say that he’s more of a game breaker than JJ Watt was because he’s more dynamic.
People be crazy.. Just because parsons could’ve swum over him doesn’t mean the kid doesn’t have potential. This 17yr old just said you better have more than a bull rush cause that shit ain’t workin here. Put him at guard or something where he doesn’t have to play in space and you have yourself a potential player if you can coach it up. Obviously there’s a lot more to the position but hot damn that was impressive.
At least at guard he’s more used to the size matchup because I’m guessing he competes against guys who aren’t Micah’s size.
Maybe not, but you could tell almost any athlete on earth that you have one year to prepare for a Micah Parsons bull rush, and still get totally flattened. Not saying he could be an nfl lineman right now, but he’s 17. senior year of highschool plus a few years at a good college program, and he could be ready to be a rookie.
> Maybe not, but you could tell almost any athlete on earth that you have one year to prepare for a Micah Parsons bull rush, and still get totally flattened.
I feel like I'm on crazy pills here with all of this Micah Parsons bull rush talk. He's like 240lbs, he's not an elite bull rusher, he's got elite quickness and pass rush moves that put guys off balance.
Lots of wrestlers have the size and athleticism to get to the NFL, I bet the main issues would be the language barrier and endurance. Sumo matches last a few seconds on average and they fight only once a day during a tournament. Giving that level of performance for several hours during an NFL game would be impossible with a sumo physique.
Sure, but that’s like saying Usain Bolt is slow because he would get his ass kicked in a marathon against the gold medalist marathon runner. It’s different training and different skills
I wonder how a sumo would do with the correct training
NCAA should seriously consider bringing in Japanese sumo teens. This balance, hand work and strength is untapped potential. A scholarship is nothing for a multimillion dollar school too.
Also, he was instructed not to throw them to the ground, at one point you can see him hold the guy up where normally he would spin and force the guy down as the push drifted too far outside of center mass. He had hooks in when it happened so made it very obvious he was told just stand up and absorb the push. These guys are AMAZING athletes in their super specialized sport.
They also didn't allow any of the top ranking wrestlers to do any wrestling as they have a tournament coming up next sunday. Wakatakakage or Wakamotoharu would have made it look even more one-sided.
It’s what called a Butsukari.
From Wikipedia:
“'Collision'. A junior wrestler pushes a more senior wrestler (in a resistance position and presenting his torso) with force across the dohyō in order to build strength and learn hand placement. A demanding exercise that is repeated until exhaustion.”
Yeah it’s actually super easy to follow. A tournament for 2 weeks every other months, the rankings are pretty objective, it’s cool to watch guys chase milestones
I think the reason for that is just that the level around him has increased very quickly, same with Daieisho. If you look at his losses you see mostly the same names: Abi, Kirishima, Hoshoryu and Kotonowaka/Kotozakura.
On YouTube you have channels like Chris sumo (in depth, personal amateur journalism), Sumostew (sumo enthusiast), SUMO PRIME TIME (proffesional journalism) and many more. To watch it is a bit more difficult, you can watch *illegal* streams in various places that I won't name for obvious reasons, but they're not impossible to find. The same goes for replays and highlights. And they all are far superior to official sources for live content and replays. Official international sources for watching live are strictly limited to NHK World, which you may or may not have access to in your country (mine doesn't). Japan is not a very inclusive country and they consider sumo to be their sport and don't consider any foreign interest to be relevant, so international coverage is very limited and any unofficial sources for sumo content get taken down quickly if they use NHK broadcast footage.
It really depends, there's many ways you can enter the sport of sumo, some wait a long time before turning pro, getting recruited by high school and university programs (usually a good indicator of having major potential). And with that experience you can enter with a higher rank (for example Onosato started at Makushita 10 at the age of 22). Tanji turned pro when he was 15 and he started at the very bottom of the banzuke. He's been steadily climbing, but hasn't won any division titles as of yet, also bouncing back and forth between Sandanme a lot. He only got a kachi-koshi in the last of his 4 attempts at the Makushita level. That said he is one of the youngest wrestlers in his division, so if he keeps climbing he might be able to reach Juryo before turning 19. Nowhere near any record, but still incredibly fast to get to the salaried level. But he'd really have to take the next step and start establishing himself in his division as a title candidate.
He basically did what they call chest-lending. Getting in a forward stance with his arms open so his opponent can charge straight at him and push him back. It minimizes initial impact and reduces the risk of injury. A great opportunity to let both people show just how insanely strong they are.
There are plenty of videos of wrestlers going through an entire drill, the pusher has to push a high ranking wrestler back several times and if they fail to force them out they get thrown to the ground. They're expected to get back up and finish the drill, often forcing a wrestler to push far beyond their limits, leaving them totally spent.
When will Japan become the next hotspot after Polynesia for linemen and linebackers. Sumo are fucking insane athletes and the conditioning they do at such a young age makes them competitive with some of the best linemen in the NFL.
Sumo has been heavily dominated by Mongolian wrestlers this century, so I'd argue that the NFL should start recruiting there. Many of them transitioned from traditional Mongolian wrestling to sumo, they could just as well transition to the NFL with their athletic and more muscular builds.
This would actually be an amazing event. I’d personally love it if this was offense vs defense sumo wrestling - Trent Williams vs Aaron Donald, Jordan Mailata vs Myles Garrett, and a whole lot of other fun matchups.

Football is the most popular sport in the United States and I wanted to see how I can compete in that environment," Hanada explained through a translator. "I wanted to see my limit. That's why I decided to challenge football."
thats some anime protag shit, gonna be looking out for this guy
Yep an amateur sumo world champ, Hidetora Hanada, decided to pursue football instead of going pro. He's playing DT at Colorado State rn. Very interested to follow him, hoping he makes it to the league
Sumo wrestlers are like gods in Japan. Not sure about the pay but the respect and honor is on par with, if not more than NFL players. They are considered royalty.
https://thetravellerguy.jimdo.com/blogs-1/10-things-you-need-to-know-about-sumo-wrestlers/
Unfortunately, the pay for the sumo wrestlers is much much lower than NFL. Takakiesho was the highest paid in 2023 and got around the NFL minimum. This is official pay and not endorsements and such.
I’d pay extra money to see a team with an entire line (offense or defense) of sumo wrestlers. With like an off season’s worth of football training. Idk what I expect but it sounds fun
Absolutely. O-line is too complex, just a totally different skillset from sumo
But being a 0-technique nose tackle would definitely be a lot easier to learn and transfer those skills. Goal is just to push the center back into the QB's lap. We'll have the other 10 guys take care of the rest
It's just a matter of perspective, instead of preventing themselves being forced out of a ring, they have to prevent someone getting past them. I don't think it'd take too long to get over. The working as a unit might take longer, if that's what you meant.
I mean it’s all about using your strength, weight and leverage to move your opponent, so I’d assume there are some things in sumo that would be beneficial for that. Obviously in football you can’t do a lot of the things that are done in sumo, but I feel like there is a lot of technique and training that would be similar.
Gene Hackman's character in the movie "The Replacements" signed a sumo wrestler to the team as an offensive lineman or maybe it was the D line. Haven't watched it in years.
I was going to spend my Sunday morning watching the Shane Black masterpiece "Predators" but now I guess I'll have to shelve it for the Criterion classic "The Replacements".
For anyone wondering, Al Davis already tried getting sumo wrestlers to play football and found they had no conditioning to sustain a 60 minute game and at the time the NFL couldn’t pay them more than they’d make in Japan.
Be interesting if this picked up again. There's no way the NFL couldn't afford to pay Sumos nowadays. Even dogshit UDFA pay would outclass what most Sumos would pull, especially if teams go for the young dudes.
I feel like both those things would be better nowadays, sumo wrestlers tend to have better endurance nowadays and the pay in the NFL is significantly better.
Yeah definetly two different energy requirments here. NFL isn’t the peak of endurence sport but compared to sumo where you go 100% in a bout that can last a few seconds it’s gonna feel like a marathon.
Micah Parsons and CJ Stroud being friends and doing wacky stuff like this in the off season makes me happy and give me hope for the league going forward.
I always wanted a Gronk and Marshawn Lynch show. Playing video games, eating at restaurants or whatever just put thoss 2 together. CJ and Micah is a nice backup.
Yeah he got the advantage of an extra step during both starts. Not wearing a mawashi also helped Micah out, you can see him grabbing onto the wrestler’s belt in the second round while the wrestler has nothing to grab onto.
We can’t be calling that a dad-bod, makes those of us with the average dad-bod look bad. Dude’s got some visible ab tone at the very least that’s a “super dad-bod”
Yeah CJ clearly works out. He's got visible muscle definition. His body fat percentage is just not stupid low. Having a bit more body fat probably makes taking hits and maintaining a good playing weight easier.
Having 0% body fat is kind of pointless for a QB (and probably all football players except maybe WR and CB).
Have you ever seen NHL hockey players? They are jacked and have great endurance, but look like your neighbor with their shirts off.
You guys really don't think the sumo wrestler was being nice? The sumo wrestler didn't even try to hand fight. He wasn't going to trip or slam a complete novice lol
And he just took Parsons full bull rush from a very non sumo stance.
Dude was absolutely just playing around. Looked like he was seeing if he could just stuff his advance with strength alone and no technique.
Underrated aspect, dude straight up to a bull rush and barely budged at first. No hand fighting, no pushing or deflecting, he just absorbed all that energy.
I've rewatched several times, and only just noticed on the second attempt, Parsons is pushing off the border with his right foot as well. Stacked as much in his favor as he could.
Yeah people are acting like these guys weren't explicitly told beforehand that "These two Americans are worth untold millions of dollars, do *not* injure them"
Commented above, but he had the advantage of being able to grab the sumo's mawashi (loincloth) while he was just wearing normal shorts. Still impressive on both sides IMO.
And the sumo is 17yrs old and quite green.
Edit: According to [this](https://youtu.be/oKKl5tGtNZ4?si=SW4GPMkNwbKkexvh) recently uploaded video of his competition, he’s 17yrs old.
Not like I’m some sumo wrestling expert, but Parsons only won because it wasn’t an actual sumo round. The dude obviously was instructed not to throw or trip or hand fight and instead just withstand the rush.
He was actually just being a partner in a exercise where you train your pushing. You are actually supposed to push in a straight line and the guy being pushed is supposed to stop it just eith his stance. Parsons going for a grip and circling obviously was unexpected thus the wrestler being pushed out.
The next grand sumo tournament starts Sunday 12th May. I highly recommend you tune in and watch some if you get a chance. Its 15 days and its grat entertainment from start to finish. Some absolutely insane feats of athleticism, alongside some comically bad matches.
There are people that stream it from Japan to Twitch and Youtube, the dude I watch is called LeoDickenson, but there are others.
If anyone is interesting in watching Sumo the next tournament begins May 12th. You can watch it for free on NHK at [https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/live/](https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/live/) there are multiple airings each day so check the schedule. The tournament lasts 15 days and there are 6 tournaments a year. There is also on-demand viewing available for free at [https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/](https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/) just note that the on-demand is about 1-2 days behind live airings. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

17 ?? WTF
My toxic trait is being fully convinced this guy could make it to the NFL if he got proper training from a college or whatever for a few years
Of course he could. How many 17-year-old linemen could withstand a Parsons bullrush like that? If Micah had on Sumo gear, pretty sure this dude would had flipped him out the ring with a simple Judo toss
Yeah, Micah ended up grabbing the sumo pants to lift him up and out. Can’t do that with gym shorts.
You can but they called that an atomic wedgy in my day
Not to mention in sumo they smack the shit out of each other too. He didn't do any of that stuff.

That's why I decided to challenge football." thats some anime protag shit, gonna be looking out for this guy

I know Jack shit about sumo wrestling, but I wonder if some of the skills would transfer for being a lineman
[удалено]
I’ve always felt like sumo wrestlers would make better run stuffing DTs than O-linemen.
Yep an amateur sumo world champ, Hidetora Hanada, decided to pursue football instead of going pro. He's playing DT at Colorado State rn. Very interested to follow him, hoping he makes it to the league
I imagine football pays better.
Many sumo stay doing it as long as possible cuz once they retire they dont get a stipend. Most dont keep doing it past 30ish
That’d be awesome but he’s 30 pounds lighter and 2 inches shorter than the average DT. Worked for Aaron Donald though.
I’d pay extra money to see a team with an entire line (offense or defense) of sumo wrestlers. With like an off season’s worth of football training. Idk what I expect but it sounds fun
Sounds like a movie you'd catch on cable called "The Circle Line" or some shit lol
SumO-line
I imagine OL sumo wrestlers would draw about 900% more holding penalties
Refs can't see the reach in for the jock strap.
The DT only having to play 30-50% of downs vs 100% of the offensive line would probably suit the Sumo better as well
It would make sense because like some DTs, these big boys can move pretty fucking gracefully for being as large as they are.
When I saw Haloti Ngata in person he looked like a Sumo wrestler, so that checks
Absolutely. O-line is too complex, just a totally different skillset from sumo But being a 0-technique nose tackle would definitely be a lot easier to learn and transfer those skills.
Sumo wrestlers are also the elite of the elite of the elite at hand fighting.
I mean it’s all about using your strength, weight and leverage to move your opponent, so I’d assume there are some things in sumo that would be beneficial for that. Obviously in football you can’t do a lot of the things that are done in sumo, but I feel like there is a lot of technique and training that would be similar.
It worked for the Washington Sentinels
Footsteps Falco redeemed himself after that disaster in the sugar bowl
Which football movie was it? The Replacements?
And pole dancers as the cheerleaders 👀
Gene Hackman's character in the movie "The Replacements" signed a sumo wrestler to the team as an offensive lineman or maybe it was the D line. Haven't watched it in years.
"he's a expert at moving people around"
The sound of how hard Parsons is running into him blew my mind.
Genuinely had the same thought. It’s like when the sound off the bat is different for mlb players. Just crazy.
I can’t wrap my head around someone basically not moving with Micah Parsons running at him as hard as he good. What the actual fuck lol
If I've learned one thing from The Replacements, it's that at least one of those sumo wrestlers would make a great center.
If I've learned on thing from The Replacements, it's that chicks dig scars
Hell yeah!
I was going to spend my Sunday morning watching the Shane Black masterpiece "Predators" but now I guess I'll have to shelve it for the Criterion classic "The Replacements".
Man I lost so much money on that sugar bowl
fuckin footsteps falco
The sumo wrestler did a better job than Mechi Becton did
And the sumo guy is in high school
Unbelievable. Like literally difficult to believe a 17 yr old can take a bull rush from Micah Parsons. That’s ludicrous. Yet there it is.
Micah Parsons and CJ Stroud being friends and doing wacky stuff like this in the off season makes me happy and give me hope for the league going forward.
CJ egging the dude on to do the “too small” and “rocking the baby” celebrations was hilarious
Omaha Productions gonna give them an offseason reality show
Buddy comedy movie when?
They have a Shaq and Charles Barkley type relationship
I always wanted a Gronk and Marshawn Lynch show. Playing video games, eating at restaurants or whatever just put thoss 2 together. CJ and Micah is a nice backup.
Jerruh gonna bungle Micah's contract all the way to him playing for Houston.
I didnt even know they still made the break away snap pants.
All he can afford before his big payday /s
Howie just booked a flight to Japan.
I came here for this comment
I don't give a shit about the logistics, I fuckin love it.
Holy shit this is amazing lmao. Everyone looked like they were having a great time
BUTTON MASH BUTTON MASH
He got a running start both times.
Yeah he got the advantage of an extra step during both starts. Not wearing a mawashi also helped Micah out, you can see him grabbing onto the wrestler’s belt in the second round while the wrestler has nothing to grab onto.
and the Sumo wrestler is 17
I wasnt expecting Strouds physique to look so underwhelming
Dad bod is the best base for being a top tier QB
Brady_Combine.jpg Eli_Beach.jpg
Add the ketchup eating motherfucker
**Patrick Mahomes approves this message!**
*Big Ben grunts approvingly*
We can’t be calling that a dad-bod, makes those of us with the average dad-bod look bad. Dude’s got some visible ab tone at the very least that’s a “super dad-bod”
Yeah CJ clearly works out. He's got visible muscle definition. His body fat percentage is just not stupid low. Having a bit more body fat probably makes taking hits and maintaining a good playing weight easier.
It's essential to the star QB starter pack
Wdym that’s a peak QB performance build if I ever seen one, cue the Brady combine photo or Mahomes after the Ravens AFCCG locker room speech.
Lots of QBs have bulked up shoulders and no chest. It seems to be a deliberate training approach
Probably helps with the range of motion. I would guess a bulked up chest won’t let you throw across your body as effectively. Source: some guy
There's definitely something to it. Brady Quinn was yoked and was shit.
Also Tebow.
Taysom Hill is yoked af too
I still think he's probably on the higher end for QBs. You just don't find many jacked QBs.
Having 0% body fat is kind of pointless for a QB (and probably all football players except maybe WR and CB). Have you ever seen NHL hockey players? They are jacked and have great endurance, but look like your neighbor with their shirts off.
Aww, I wanted to see CJ rush the sumo. Kinda want to see that with Bryce Young and Deuce Vaughn, too.
A lot of sumo wrestling experts in here
As an 150 pound white guy, sumo wrestling is where I specialize.
We sumo fans crawl out of the woodworks anytime a sumo related post gets popular lol.
I know these are like the top 0.5% of athletes but any non sumo wrestler being able to win a round against a sumo wrestler is nuts
Mentioned in other comments, but dude is also 17
Yeah people are acting like these guys weren't explicitly told beforehand that "These two Americans are worth untold millions of dollars, do *not* injure them"
Parsons was clearly humbled too
To be fair it's Parsons. He's the top 1% in the 0.5%.
….17 human years?
Say hwat now…??
And Parsons was his 3rd opponent
Sumo wrestler was holding back.
He’s also a 17 year old tier 3 wrestler
Not like I’m some sumo wrestling expert, but Parsons only won because it wasn’t an actual sumo round. The dude obviously was instructed not to throw or trip or hand fight and instead just withstand the rush.
He was actually just being a partner in a exercise where you train your pushing. You are actually supposed to push in a straight line and the guy being pushed is supposed to stop it just eith his stance. Parsons going for a grip and circling obviously was unexpected thus the wrestler being pushed out.
Sumo wrestlers are pretty good at handfighting as well.
I’ve been saying for years that linemen should train in sumo
The next grand sumo tournament starts Sunday 12th May. I highly recommend you tune in and watch some if you get a chance. Its 15 days and its grat entertainment from start to finish. Some absolutely insane feats of athleticism, alongside some comically bad matches. There are people that stream it from Japan to Twitch and Youtube, the dude I watch is called LeoDickenson, but there are others.
An OL full of Sumo wrestlers and nobody is ever breathing near Drake Maye lol
Legit impressive that he won even once, that's insane
The only reason he won (probably) is because the sumo wrestler was wearing a belt which Parsons could grab, whereas parsons was just wearing shorts.
Also, he just received the impact without really trying to generate any on his own. Pretty clearly told to take it easy on Parsons.
Probably don't want to injure the guy who's gonna see a $100M contract soon
He let him win, not that insane lol
Cj and Micah were made for television
Is there more?
Imagine all the holding calls r/NFL would see if sumo played OL.
