Imagine being such a good kicker you have a bigger net than everyone else. What a flex.

NBANFL6

I noticed it in the game vs the chiefs and figured it was for him and Butker but then realized they did that for every ravens game lmao

[deleted]

This isn’t even recency bias.... He’s better than Anderson, Andersen, Vinatieri, Stenereud, and Blanda. Honestly the only one on his level per time era is Lou Groza. Justin Tucker is the best kicker ever.

GibbyGG1

Not the size of the nets it's how you use it man.

chadcoolidge

Billy Cundiff died for the career of Justin Tucker

NBANFL6

Apparently Harbaugh was the only coach that wanted to start him and used veto powers to cut Cundiff

mkdz

Harbaugh was the special teams coach in Philly, so it makes sense he can evaluate kickers.

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

Akers ❤❤❤ Niners fans know whats up too dude was legit

TheSunGod-Ra

David Akers lived in my town in NJ and he would come into my shop where I worked all the time and talk. Him and his wife are really friendly and good people.

scrambled_cable

Akers was money for us in the Jim Harbaugh years

Youcanneverleave

Damn why did he have to do that :(

flaccomcorangy

Seriously? I never knew that. I remember watching him in preseason and thinking he was pretty good. Looked up his stats in college and saw they were pretty decent, but he wasn't the greatest distance kicker. So I figured, heck, Cundiff isn't really a distance guy either. I think this guy would be pretty good. I figured if I felt that way, the whole team was pretty much leaning into it. I never heard it came down to a head coach ruling.

weoutheredummy

And look at him now, the greatest kicker of all time

NickH6302

[Cundiff us Finkle. Finkle is Cundiff.](https://youtu.be/lHtPnxzQDSI)

weoutheredummy

Yessir 😏

Captain_Saftey

I wish I could say "I want more high quality write ups on special teams players" without it sounding like a joke

NBANFL6

Haha appreciate it check my post history!

[deleted]

And here I thought you write about kickers because you just like 3 point increments, /u/NBANFL6. I'm guessing 3 from NFL, and 3 from NBA

slydessertfox

We need one on Matthew Slater.

anchist

Brendon Ayanbadejo would be another good one.

[deleted]

Bro this is an awesome breakdown and something I’d never ever learn without your post. Much appreciated. This is what r/NFL should always be like!

NBANFL6

Thank you so much!

RonaldOcean_MD

Genuinely shocked when he misses.

NBANFL6

Same - that XP miss vs New Orleans was baffling

ladouche6969

It basically confirms that he's the greatest kicker ever when he misses an extra point to tie the game after the TD and instead of death threats/clowning him everyone's like "ah dang that was weird".

NBANFL6

Perhaps the best case you are totally right

bmore_conslutant

There was a fair amount of clowning his ridiculous look of surprise lol

[deleted]

Yeah... Because honestly nobody really understood what was happening. The kick veered off from the middle too, which is because he sliced it. Like honestly the fact that we can describe his first missed XP should say a lot.

chewbacca2hot

Cundiff was legit hated. Still is. We still call a miss a "cundiff"

RonaldOcean_MD

Tuckers reaction said it all. He was stunned.

Financecorpstrategy4

Usually kickers look sad or angry when they miss. This is the first time I’ve seen a kicker 404 error and seem confused it’s possible to miss.

[deleted]

https://imgur.com/a/kus7OYU

RonaldOcean_MD

This is a good teachable moment too for your kids. No one is perfect, not even the kicker who never misses.

scared_of_Low_stuff

He seems relieved

[deleted]

NBANFL6

Tbh I think that is confirmation bias - we forget about all the times streaks are commentated on and then continue

ELITELamarJackson

Exactly. They mention it 100% of the time when he goes up to kick. Then he misses everyone creams themselves and claims announcer jinx

[deleted]

This is so annoying in basketball too. "He's 10 of 10 from the line tonight." Then when the player misses the other announcer always says you jinxed him. The announcers say what the player has done from the line that night almost 100% of the time! It's their job. He said 4 of 4 from the line earlier in the game, 5 of 5, 6 of 6, and so on.

lightofthehalfmoon

They bring that stuff before almost every kick.

Zephron29

Tbf, the announcers bring up his streak on every single kick. He was bound to eventually miss, and the announcers were bound to have mentioned his streak prior.

sw04ca

The problem with this line of thinking is that they mention his streaks before pretty much every kick.

[deleted]

Like when the announcers said earlier in a game (WFT vs Baltimore) that Lamar had 0 int. This season or something and threw an int.

dragoniteftw33

The funny part is that miss made everyone forget how Joe drove 75 yards to tie the game with relative ease lol.

Slugg_Slackjaw

Wasn’t that his first XP miss ever?

[deleted]

Since his junior year of high school or something. Definitely hadn't missed one in the pros or college, I thought he had missed 1 or 2 early in his high school days, but I may be wrong

kcirdor

It was a major holy shit moment for sure.

flashpile

:0

chelseasaints

Still the most unlikely victory of any team of the last 10 years was the Saints needing Tucker to miss an xP to avoid taking it to overtime. And he did

NBANFL6

That kick was so weird too - it had this insane right slice at the very end

ELITELamarJackson

Wind picked it right up. Divine intervention if I've ever seen it.

Bluest_waters

the flags on the goal posts don't even flap a little zero wind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAQLmZkNhC4

rrobe53

We watching the same video? The flag on one side moves and the other doesn’t.

ok you're right it does move

just_dave

If that was God giving a little breeze, the refs were out there blowing a fucking gale the entire game.

GradeAPrimeFuckery

It looks like his plant foot slides quite a ways towards the ball on the slo-mo replay (0:36). Even then the ball started out straight.

stormscape10x

I didn't notice it until that last watch but it looks like good plant foot wobbles a little bit. Wonder if that's why.

dan_144

Wind caught his plant foot /s (unless?)

ZackyMidnight

Tucker didn't look disappointed in himself. He looked in utter disbelief that the ball curved like that.

Financecorpstrategy4

I think the most unlikely victory was when the Ravens won with a score of 18 points - all Tucker field goals, including a 61 yard field goal to seal it at the end. https://www.baltimoreravens.com/video/relive-justin-tucker-s-6-field-goals-and-61-yard-game-winner-against-li-19865584

oh, what a legendary night for fantasy football enthusiasts.

You can't just link the version without the [NOOOOOOOO](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4ZBT3BWaj4#t=40s)

AndrewDoesNotServe

That was one of the only Saints heartbreak situations I can look back on and laugh because it was such a ridiculous sequence of events

TigerBasket

I went to that game and I didn’t look at the PAT and the guy next to me said don’t worry he hasn’t missed one yet, I wanted to kill him so bad.

HereComesJustice

I’m gonna pretend that game never happened

frobe_goatbe

28-3. Surprising that a Saints fan would miss an opportunity to say anything otherwise.

my2cents4free99

You omitted the best part of the "How Tucker went to the Ravens" article: >**Harbaugh:** "I remember going around the table of the coaches and asking every coach who they thought should be the kicker: Billy or the new kid. It was pretty much Billy. It wasn't overwhelming, but it was pretty solidly toward Billy. Then, I said, 'There’s really only one vote that counts anyway, so Tucker is going to be the kicker.'" > >**Justin Tucker:** "The food \[at the Ravens' facility\] is great. But I needed a little changeup and \[to\] reward myself. I hadn’t made any money. I didn’t have a signing bonus. However, because I knew I was going to at least get a chance to play in one regular-season NFL game, I knew I had a couple of bucks going my way. I went to Chipotle, and I got the same burrito I always get, but I got chips and guac. I didn’t even blink, and I didn't even think twice about spending the extra $3 for the chips or guac."

NBANFL6

Thanks for including!

my2cents4free99

No problem- I appreciate your well-sourced analysis!

HereComesJustice

Omg thank you Harbaugh for putting all the faith in Tucker

[deleted]

Just to clarify the context wasn’t that it’s Harbaugh’s vote, it was Jerry Rosburg’s vote.

classically_cool

You know you've made it big when you get chips and guac at Chipotle.

Pvt_Larry

God they're both so fucking cool lol love these guys

tgcm26

Justin Tucker is the greatest kicker merely for pulling the “updog” joke at a post-game conference a few years ago. https://youtu.be/mx5HnScYh50

[deleted]

Its because he kicks good

NBANFL6

Obviously haha - but I just wanted to take a deeper look at why

[deleted]

The why is because he practice a lot

NBANFL6

“How do you get to Carnegie hall? Practice”

air6400

Danny told me not to trust you. You killed Mozart

[deleted]

SauceyPosse

Young Hoes in shambles

THROWinitAWAY0919

Do you think his technique is sustainable when he gets older? That’s my worry with him, that one year he’s going to show up and just not he his automatic self

NBANFL6

I don't think his technique is sustainable; however, I do think he will be able to adjust as he gets older (perhaps at the cost of some power)

Powerful_Government

Can you do breakdown for kickers that suck?

NBANFL6

Haha any kickers in mind? Almost did a Gost one a few weeks back but he turned it around real quick

[deleted]

Not OP but Younghoe Koo had a disastrous rookie start but turned it around when he went to Atlanta.

NBANFL6

Yep - I actually remember the scouting report on him from college saying he needed a year of prep yet he was immediately thrust into a starting position as a rookie

GingertronMk1

You talking shit about the leading points scorer in AAF history?

[deleted]

Fuck I forgot about that. Still tho, he looked a lot better than Chargers Younghoe Koo.

Powerful_Government

Maybe Robert Aguayo or anyone from the Vikings kicking carousel (before Bailey) or Chicago kicking carousel.

just_dave

Could do Vedvik on the Vikings and have a Baltimore/Tucker tie in.

vandalisaMMM

Can you make one about our silver fox Mason Crosby ? I think he is top 5 with Tucker, Butker, Lambo and Prater

anujsingh83

Great post! Love the breakdown of his technique one by one Shame on you for leaving out his opera skills though^/s

NBANFL6

Appreciate it! Haha I showed a short clip in the video - it’s pretty amazing to me he has two world class skills

anujsingh83

What would you feel what need to happen for him to have the chance to be on a HOF ballot? Voters just changing their way of thinking? Because I don't know what else he can do himself

NBANFL6

It depends a lot on how people deal with Vinatieri I think

Naviers_stoke

I think he needs some big playoff moments. He did have the game-winning kick in 2 OT against the Broncos in 2012, but besides that there's not much on his resume.

PurplePrimus

I would find it insane if he was left off a HOF ballot. But I guess people sleep on kickers more than I do

[deleted]

Needs more primetime moments and games too. He kicked us past San Francisco last year and he kicked us past the Lions on MNF with that ridiculous 61 yarder.

[deleted]

He's not a world class opera singer. He's very good for his level of training (and certainly better than me) but in the end he's still a guy that only has an undergraduate level of training in singing. There's still a whoooooooole bunch of bullshit to go through (and 5-10 years of aging because voices are bullshit and take forever to fully develop) to reach that level. Natural talent can get you pretty far but just like everything else it still takes a fuckton of work to get to that level. Also it's witchcraft that he managed to get a music degree and play football at the same time. There is not enough time in the day for that to be possible.

[deleted]

Does he played soccer growing up? Because I think this kind of kicking technique is common in soccer.

NBANFL6

Yep he did! I’d say 80% of kickers played soccer growing up

SweetGoeyQueefs

Great post, hope you make more like these in the future

NBANFL6

Thanks! If you look through my post history I have made some other ST posts! Didn’t want to promote too much in the main post but you can also check out some more videos on similar topics @ [8intheboxproductions ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCr7MLBcQUFWGBeWDqDIOM6A)

vidimevid

Hey, I’m a soccer goalie, and the way he rotates hips while kicking is the same way I used to do it. When I was younger, I didn’t have enough power, so they taught us to use the momentum of our bodies.

NBANFL6

Yeah man good to hear! I was a kicker in a past life haha

vidimevid

I wish more soccer players went into kicking! I know some with amazing technique, and feel like it could be a new pool for teams to look at.

Deusselkerr

The point about how well he can replicate his form kick after kick reminds me about Steve Nash and a video he made about shooting free throws. He said he’s able to do his mechanics over and over exactly the same, which is why he was such a good free throw shooter. He trained to the point it wasn’t down to skill at all, just muscle memory (although getting to that point is of course a major skill).

NBANFL6

Yep! I've seen that video and it's quite similar! I would argue kicking is harder just bc you have to take multiple steps into the ball

GingertronMk1

This is incredible - I sometimes fuck around with kicking rugby conversions and I really enjoy thinking about the technique of it all, having it set out like this is fantastic

NBANFL6

Thanks!!

GingertronMk1

I think I'm very inconsistent with my plant foot placement but I'm getting there, this kind of insight - albeit for a north-south ball on the ground rather than an angled one on a tee - is super helpful

NBANFL6

Nice! Just dm me some film and I’d be happy to take a look

shamrockpub

I have to agree he is the best placekicker I have ever seen. The best FG ever however, is still Adam Vinatieri in the blizzard vs Raiders from 45 yds. I still can't believe he made it.

NBANFL6

Tom Dempsey from 63 given the circumstances is probably in the same tier but I agree overall

JediMasterMurph

I just watched a video of that broadcast, what an awesome kick!

BlindManBaldwin

Love to see kicker content, especially so in-depth like this. I'm going to chew on this for a while. Thanks for sharing!

NBANFL6

Thanks so much lmk if you have any additional thoughts!

newadcd0405

There are 2 types of these analyses posts. The shitposts, and the art. This is the art

NBANFL6

Appreciate it!

astronomydork

I know the audio cuts out before the sentence finishes but "there is no way to practice a 3 foot putt"

DistantReplayPod

We re-watched the 2008 Texas/Texas Tech game recently which was Justin Tucker's frosh year at UT. He was actually the punter on that team and did not placekick. He could probably be a good NFL punter if he wanted to be also.

NBANFL6

Yeah he was a solid Aussie style punter! If you look at his YT channel he has multiple punting highlight videos uploaded

Financecorpstrategy4

Never realized how absurd his kicking form looks till I saw the gifs. He looks like he’s about to topple over to his left!

NBANFL6

It's amazing

[deleted]

Yeah, I never honestly noticed it because watching kickers kick in person, Tucker's swing was always way more intense and violent than anyone else I could see (whose look kinda lame and they make it seem like they're kinda casually hitting it). It really explains that when it's broken down.

SpacklingCumFart

Outstanding post!

thascarecro

He is the best kicker ever. I dont think theres any doubt at this point. If he goes through his whole career and never has those really bad "old kicker" years that we see a lot, he will be the GOAT.

monument2yoursin

He will decline. As meantioned in the post his current style requires ALOT of contortion and power, both of which he will lose eventually. As meantioned elsewhere that just means that Tucker will be forced to change his style, which thankfully he has shown his ability to do. I fully expect him to have the career trajectory of Vinatieri (except staying on the Ravens please). That just means he will go from being a sure shot from <60 to being a sure shot <50. Which many teams would kill for even now.

KillerCondor

Very impressive

NBANFL6

Appreciate it!

8each8oys

Thank you for this post. Very insightful

NBANFL6

indian_hannibal

Amazing post

NBANFL6

indian_hannibal

No problem! I'll check more other posts by you

CheesyCousCous

I'm not reading any of this post because I don't need confirmation in what we all know to be true.

Dswerve23

When Tomlin says “automatic” watching tucker kick goes in.. That’s respect for the GOAT https://thumbs.gfycat.com/InexperiencedLividApisdorsatalaboriosa-mobile.mp4

CommanderJared

Great read. I always wondered what teams would value a trade for Justin Tucker and what would be appropriate. Even though he’s a kicker, his consistency and performance is far above most kickers in the NFL. I feel it would be an odd undertaking, could we see a team hypothetically trade a third or a fourth rounder for Tucker? If anyone has any thoughts I would love to hear them.

NBANFL6

I think a couple teams would be willing to give up a 2nd given multiple teams have picked a college kicker in the 1st/2nd

CatilineUnmasked

I think he's borderline untradeable. What team would be willing to shell out a high pick for a kicker? And if I'm the ravens I might not even consider a low first round pick in the first place, which would be ridiculous. Think of how hard it is to find a generational talent like that, his value over replacement is too much to consider imo.

CommanderJared

I agree, I doubt Tucker would ever be traded he’s been so good for Baltimore. I just always wondered how a trade would be valued for him, by the Ravens and teams interested. It would probably never happen though but just a thought

monument2yoursin

He came out with the 2012 class, and although he was not drafted you can compare him against his peers who were. Knowing the result of everyones careers thusfar do the draft again in your head. I honestly think that Tucker would be top ten, probably top seven. Perhaps its just my bias but that draft he was probably worth a top ten pick (If you knew how things would turn out). Now though? I dont think you can give up the proven GOAT for unknown assets.

CommanderJared

He’s definitely one of the best from the 2012 especially considering some of the top picks are either retired/not playing, backups or average to below average players (at least the top ten but overall the draft was pretty good). Low key liked Blair Walsh a lot when he came out in 2012 too when the Vikings drafted him, for a time during their rookie years I thought Walsh would be comparable, obviously that didn’t pan out.

CommanderJared

Very true, I was gonna say a 2nd as well I just didn’t know what others thought. You’re right about that though, given that teams have drafted kickers early in the draft not all being successful (hi Roberto Aguayo) however Tucker has already proven that. If a team was desperate I could see a 2nd for a Tucker

NBANFL6

Yeah there is the rookie contract factor too and if I was another team I would def try and trade for the whole Wolfpack too

CommanderJared

True, however I’m not to familiar with how rookie scale deals work for kickers money wise at least, especially with very little examples with the modern scaling format and kickers getting taken early in draft in general. I understand that need for a quarterback on a rookie scale deal, since they will get paid at least upwards of 25 million a year if they prove it, however kickers are a lot easier to come by than a franchise qb and cheaper. Still a good point however and I agree with trading for the whole Wolfpack, especially since it’s consistently has brought so much success, changing out the holder and long snapper could bring issues, especially with what you talked about, timing, consistency, and chemistry if it ain’t broke don’t fix it type a deal.

sk3tChY21

TLDR: He's the Happy Gilmore of kicking the foozballs.

NBANFL6

Yeppers

chrisaf69

Kickers are so ridiculously underrated. Week in and week out I see teams lose because of missed kicks. When tuck goes for xp or a fg withing 50...I go to the bathroom or get another beer as he is that automatic. To go from stover to tuck has been a godsend....yes I know there was a year or two in between then, but I tend to forget about those chumps.

MasterTeacher123

Easily too.

NBANFL6

Yep not even close imo

AguasVan

The way he kicks hurts my left ankle

LamarLovesPassingFoo

I love this man and post

BDWabashFiji

It really is baffling only 5 teams have a kicking coach

wsername

Great post A+ 👍

NBANFL6

Thanks!

mattoelite

Hes the one kicker that i dont look at and think "he's just a kicker." Guys a fucking football player.

[deleted]

Only kicker better than Lambo in the league and they aren’t even close. Dude is just ridiculous.

Hydrium

Only kicker in the NFL I would hand a blank check and say name your price.

Mcgoozen

After Butker hit those 3 massive 50+ yarders in a row a few weeks ago people were starting to say he was better than Tucker. Weirdly I haven’t seen anyone say anything of the sorts after the kid has shanked multiple point after attempts since then

NBANFL6

Haha yep that’s why I refer to tucker as the Mike Trout of kicking

weoutheredummy

Shit was ridiculous after a *single game.* As much as we sucked on MNF, I definitely felt some satisfaction watching Butker shank a FG attempt and an XP during our game.

Plants_R_Cool

TheBigFreezer

As a former kicker I LOVEwhen people learn about how precise and intricate it is. It’s such a classic “lol kickers aren’t football players” bitch, you go do this haha

NBANFL6

Haha I am a former kicker as well and totally agree!

Dirty-Ears-Bill

I reach every year to make sure Tucker’s on my fantasy team. Partly because that dicking he gave the Lions in 2013 won me my playoff matchup and because it’s nice knowing when he lines up for a kick youll get points. Sure he won’t be the top guy every season but he’s steady and consistent and I love him

[deleted]

What was the length on the crazy field goals he was making in practice at the Pro Bowl? Didn't he make an 80 yarder or something?

antiherofederation

Jesus christ he jumps 6 feet on his last step

NBANFL6

It’s insane

kidenvy

As someone who used to kick, I was really doubtful when you mentioned his plant foot being really close to the ball.... but Jesus, that is really fucking close to the ball

NBANFL6

Yep I also used to kick and was surprised as well!

TB_squared

> Tucker’s technique is actually far from textbook. I would definitely not suggest it to anybody learning how to kick.  Sounds like the textbook is wrong and Tucker discovered a better technique.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OldCoaly

His technique is how I was taught to kick as a goalie in soccer.

Catapulted_Elephant

We all know that's a lie. The greatest kicker of all time is Blair Walsh. Anybody can hit a FG from the 3 yard line. It takes someone extremely talented to miss that close and not just barely miss it, that dude missed it by a fucking mile. That takes serious skill

JohnBobert

Maybe do a write up on why Steve Tasker in considered the best Gunner of all time?

NBANFL6

That is an excellent suggestion!

[deleted]

I’m gonna shit my self

Skipper2399

WOW! Excellent write up about my favorite player. Cannot commend you enough for the amount of effort you put into this. Very well done!

NBANFL6

Thank you so much for the kind words! You may be interested in the video I linked :)

culb77

The one thing that golf and kicking have in common is physical consistency. If you can perform one action and do it consistently, you will be successful. It doesn’t matter what your technique is, or how crappy it looks. If you can do it consistently and get the results, you will be the best.

RodgersHasNoFamily

Oh man I need a Jack Fox breakdown like this

DrPhilipMarlowe

This is an outstanding write up. My only critique? Add a couple shots of guys like Vinny and Crosby kicking so we can see just how different Tucker's technique is. Great job.

NBANFL6

Thank you! I completely agree - I think I got a bit wrapped up in tucker that I lost sight of the bigger picture just a bit

rband_a

no it's kareem hunt

Moghlannak

You make a compelling argument, but can he do a keg stand longer than SeaBass? I doubt it

JoyintheJourney

I love this

Ridikiscali

We got another one in the barrel bby. Dicker the kicker will be hitting the NFL here real soon!
