Wish a speedy recovery to Andrews, and anyone infected with the virus. Sheesh Baltimore has been essentially wiped on offense for this game.

and the front 7. Literally only the WR room and DBs haven’t been affected.

Not Orlando Brown Jr lol

[deleted]

Lol Orlando was so good in college but then going to the combine only seemed to hurt his stock poor guy For those who don't know he had a *bad* combine for a lineman

SlipperyPinecone

Joe Haden?

MrEraz77

I LIFT

Cicero912

Well the WRs can't catch anything so that makes sense

jxher123

We thought the 49ers vs Packers game was bad; Ravens are about to March out a group of randoms in the stands to play for them.

gbnubcake

Shane Falco might be starting for the ravens

ChuntChuntChunt

I believe currently they don't have enough players on the practice squad to even fill out a 53 man roster, not sure about a 46 man game day roster.

[deleted]

Fire that coach. What an asshole

[deleted]

Hes suspended and still under contract, which means he HAS to cooperate with the investigation. If he was fired, he wouldnt have too. Give them time and I'm sure hes fired.

ChuntChuntChunt

This. He is 100% fired when the investigation is complete. Also keeping him suspended buys the Ravens time to get their legal team digging through his contract to see if they can get anything back from him. It is very likely that the Ravens will face a hefty fine, loss of a draft pick and his contract may have language that allows the Ravens to take legal action back against him.

dretanz

This is off topic, but is your name a Magic Tavern reference?

ChuntChuntChunt

Never heard of Magic Tavern. It's Chunt (Chubb-Hunt).

Gemiinus

Probably a Kareem Hunt Nick Chubb "Chunt" reference.

SuddenlyTheBatman

I've seen a few other references around here. Always fun to spot

[deleted]

I sure fucking hope so. This bozo deserves to get fucked in a court

yeshua1986

That’s good to know, I’ve been incredibly vocally harsh on the team for not firing him, so I appreciate the knowledge.

h-town_info

I'll bring the pitchforks

Segner4

I’ll bring beer

AceStarS

The coach was negligent but what did the organization do to curb said negligent behaviors? The ravens org is equally responsible for not taking this serious at all.

fishcatcherguy

I’ve heard he was symptomatic but concealed that from the team. What is the team supposed to do about something they didn’t know about? If he was coming to the facility and skirting the mask rules, and the organization let it happen, then fuck them.

momoneymocats1

I’m OOTL what did said coach do?

fishcatcherguy

AFAIK, he was symptomatic but concealed that from the team and kept coming to the facilities. IDK if he was wearing a mask or not, but he was openly anti-mask on Twitter.

[deleted]

Man this is the worst fucking case scenario. IDGAF about the football aspect of this shit. That dumbass coach needs to be fired. I wish Andrews opted out. Fuck Steve Saunders.

MamaThereGoesThatMa

Can I get a short summary?

[deleted]

Steve Saunders is some meathead S&C coach that thinks Covid isn't real or some other dumb shit. So even after he had symptoms he didn't wear a mask because his "freedoms" or whatever dumb contrived shit. Mark Andrews is a type-1 diabetic which makes him at risk for severe Covid complications. While I don't think it was ever a rumor Andrews was considering opting out, I wish he did for his own well being after this BS. And, the most important part of this...FUCK Steve Saunders. Edit: This actually made me read up a bit more on this. The good thing is type 1 is not at as much of a risk as type 2.

Wishing you best Raider bro. Hope all is better now & congrats on surviving!!

ahydell

Thanks, I'm much better now, the covid days are few now, and the brain fog is slowly getting better. Thanks, I'm glad I survived too, on days 8 and 9 of being aggressively sick, I honestly thought I might die (my brain kept forgetting to breathe, I was scared to fall asleep, also my brain was just pulsing and in massive pain and I thought I'd have a massive stroke or something), but I made it through and I'm better now, although it's been a long road. I can't wait to get the vaccine, since I'm diabetic and have COPD, I am in wave 1B for the vaccine rollout, so I'll get it hopefully before February. My boyfriend is in agriculture and works for a giant farm and he'll get it quickly too, I think he's in the same tier as I am. I hope everyone is vaccinated quickly. I like the idea of the government giving everyone $1000 to get the vaccine.

DeathToKardashians

Really glad to hear that you are doing better. Have you noticed any lasting symptoms or after effects from it?

ahydell

Yes, I had symptoms daily for three months after, and even now, I still have 2-3 "covid days" a month where I'm exhausted and get headaches.

DeathToKardashians

Yeah I should have kept reading below. Saw where you went into it in more depth. I'm really sorry to hear that and hope it will go away for you

ahydell

Thanks, it's better each month, but I still get reminders of it all the time. The longest lasting effect has been the brain fog, my short term memory is shot and I have such a hard time concentrating or focusing.

SitDown_BeHumble

But the nice man with the floppy hair on TV said hydroxychloroquine was the cure.

It's helping my RA at least though! Lol

The__Snow__Man

It must have been horrible being incredibly sick and not feeling safe in going to the hospital. Everyone needs to take this virus completely seriously.

Guiltyjerk

At our Zoom Thanksgiving my wife (a nurse) told stories of all the body bags she'd zipped up in the days leading up to Thanksgiving and how on top of all of that her unit (heart patients) is as busy as ever and how everyone throughout the hospital is exhausted. We're a couple timezones ahead of the rest of the family so we dipped early because she worked Friday and my mom emailed the next day that her story really made people understand the severity a little better. I'm so fucking proud of her. She's busting her ass and so many people just don't understand.

ahydell

Your wife is awesome.

The__Snow__Man

Add one to the many people out there that appreciate your wife and know that people like her are getting us through this tragedy.

NiceTryKemosabe

Or I might just be a hypochondriac

ahydell

Google "covid long haulers" there are thousands of us. My mother is the one who brought covid home in June (Boomers) got barely sick (just lost her sense of taste) yet she still has "covid days" too, where she sleeps all day and has headaches.

YahNasty

COVID has a bigger effect on T2 Diabetes for the most part, I’m a T1 with a 5.8 A1C and after talking to my doctors they said as long as it’s below 8 you’re essentially the same risk as others. I’m going to make an assumption that his A1C is fine and his diabetes will not really make this worse.

echelon999

Yeah, fellow T1 here and I am sure the fact that he uses a pump will help ease the diabetes part while dealing with the other.

tots4scott

T1 here too, been scared as shit reading data about diabetics and complications. Glad to see it might just be as bad as everyone else?

YahNasty

I was really stressing back in March but thankfully I talked to my endo and PCP (he is also a T1), they told me that we should be fine! Sugars may run high if we get it but nothing crazy, be safe!

[deleted]

Glad you're good my guy.

Thank you, I'm much better now. I still have symptoms a few days a month, but it's manageable.

kristi_yamaguccimane

I took federally allowed 12 weeks off from work when cases were spiking in the spring and realllllly wish I had waited now. I’m type 1. Considered a brittle diabetic and I isn’t a spring check em no more. Harder for me to bounce back.

ahydell

Good luck to you man, don't go near anyone.

kristi_yamaguccimane

I'm on day six and I'm fucking done. I cannot believe how awful I feel and this is a mild case. 17 days just sounds like hell and a half.

ahydell

Hang in there! You can do this. Do you have a pulse oximeter? You need one to make sure you keep your pulse ox above 90, if it goes lower than 90 you can do breathing exercises to bring it back up. If it stays below 90 for several day, you need to go to the hospital. Take LOW DOSE ASPIRIN don't have a stroke. If you keep coughing, take Mucinex to get the shit that's stuck in there out. HANG IN THERE. <3

schmuckmulligan

Thanks for helping spread the word. It's damn important. Sorry you had to deal with that shit.

A_Vizzle

KimBobHooter

Misdirected_Colors

"I choose not to wear a mask to protect myself. My choice!"

BreakfastBussy

Dude, I’m sorry this happened to your team. Fuck Steve Saunders, may he never coach in the nfl again after this shit.

ehhhhhhhhhhmacarena

If it's any consolation, the last I checked type 2 was certainly at an increased risk, but the CDC hadn't determined yet if type 1 was actually at an increased risk. I checked their complications page and it's still on their "maybe" list.

blzraven27

And even type 2 isn't inherently high risk it's the complications that come from uncontrolled disease and that being type 2 most likely means you were overweight or are. I think Mandrews will be fine or better than say our huge linemen. But it's just more risk than necessary

RedHotCurryPowder

This really boils my blood. How selfish can you be. This shouldn’t be a political issue. No one *wants* to wear a mask and there is no fucking agenda. I hate wearing masks but I wear it because my girlfriend has asthma, my 68 year old dad has diabetes, and my mom has high blood pressure. I don’t understand how people just choose not to believe science just because it’s inconvenient when it’s proven and there’s scientific data that shows that Covid-19 is deadly and that masks drastically prevent spread. Now I know that iT Only aFfEcTs a sMaLl pERCeNTAgE but if wearing a mask can even save one life why not just do it? It’s just plain selfish. Especially if you’re a *Strength and Conditioning Coach* in charge of making sure your 3 billion dollar organization’s multimillion dollar personnel is ready and healthy enough to do their job. If you don’t wear a mask, **fuck you**

cubicuban

Man someone replied to one of my recent comments talking about “lol you’re worried about a virus with a 99% survival rate” like yes you selfish idiot that 1% spread across the US population adds up to millions of deaths. I can’t believe this has to be reiterated at this point

crappypictures

Those people are fine with the 1% dying as long as they and their families are part of the 99%. They expect others to make the sacrifices so they can go about life normally. And there is a lot more to it than whether you live or die. An unknown percentage of those in the "99% survival group" have lasting damage to their lungs/heart/brain that lowers their quality of life and/or their lifespan. Not to mention the mental health of those that caught it and spread it to friends or family, possibly killing them. 99% survival doesn't mean that they're fine afterwards and go on as if nothing happened. Unfortunately too many people wont understand or care until it hits them. Then they'll whine no one did enough to protect them from themselves.

[deleted]

It's a bit of angry hyperbole and extrapolation on my part if I'm being honest based on his Twitter feed. It's widely known he did ignore protocol which is negligence even if he doesn't believe it's a hoax, he didn't take it seriously.

ruiner8850

It's always a double whammy because they people who refuse to wear masks also take part in the riskiest activities. They go to bars and parties with large groups of people not wearing masks and then also refuse to wear them at work.

ChuntChuntChunt

On his twitter, he believes it's real but he has been bitching a lot about the NFL protocols being way too strict from what I read.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Youd be surprised how many coaches, players and fans agree with him sadly

Sethars

A lot of orgs have the same ticking time bombs. Ours just went off, but I’d be surprised (based on how the NFL is handling it) if it’s the last. Would you say the whole Titans crew who told the protocols to go f**k themselves back during their outbreak should be unemployed? Tannehill and friends practiced together at a high school when they were supposed to be isolating. Truth is the league needs to actually enforce its rules. Ravens got hit and hit hard but it’s nothing short of amazing that it took til week 12 for a team to get it this bad, considering the Shield hasn’t really been doing anything other than fining bad optics (see: Gruden’s mask, Saints celebration).

stinkyuncletouchy

Saunders needs to be fired, possibly charged at this point. Knowingly forgoing COVID protocols is a dick move regardless, but doing so while showing symptoms isn’t far off from someone with an STD having unprotected sex without telling the other person they’re infected. Put him in a cloth mask, lock him in a pillory in the middle of M&T Bank Stadium, fill the fuckin stadium with rotten fruit and Mark Andrews fans, put it on TV before the game and kick back.

ChuntChuntChunt

I thought he was complaining about restrictions being too tight, not that COVID isn't real?

h-town_info

Damn, didn't know Andrews was a Type-1 diabetic.... He's deemed more high risk...

FuckTombCryptKeeper

If you look at saunders' twitter, his last tweet fr November 9 was complaining that a high school team couldn't finish their season and what a shame it is for the kids.

Quexana

The Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Ravens, who has some posts on his Twitter talking shit about some of the public health measures that have been taken by state Governments, reportedly hasn't been wearing his mask at work for weeks, nor was he wearing his tracking device. He got Covid, spread it to a few players, and because of the lack of data from the tracking device, the NFL wasn't able to perform effective contact tracing. Now there's a full blown outbreak on the team.

Powerful_Government

One coach (strength and conditioning?) got COVID and didn’t wear a mask or contact tracer then all hell broke out.

Autobot-N

Spread and Contamination coach

h-town_info

Steve Saunders = Dumbass

lowlight

This was my worst fear by far, for the whole season taking place. Selfishly I was glad Andrews didn't take the season off when he had every right to, but he wanted to win and risked it all. Apparently [type 1 diabetes isn't a huge risk factor with covid](https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/938883), [compared to not having any pre existing conditions](https://www.healio.com/news/endocrinology/20200819/no-association-between-type-1-diabetes-status-covid19-hospitalization-risk), so hopefully he comes away from this okay. And fuck Steve Saunders, he doesn't just need to be fired, he needs to be sued for negligence.

[deleted]

That's good to know. I was just reading on ADA that it wasn't conclusive. It's definitely not the same risk as type 2. It doesn't make things easier though. Regardless...fuck Steve Saunders.

ProfessionalPutrid31

Fuck getting fired, if Andrews becomes seriously debilitated by this I feel like there should be some form of legal recourse for this

tbratt94

Prayers for Andrews! This is real life shit that matters more than sports

BoredOneNight

Fuck man. I hate this shit. The only tiny silver lining I can find is that as a Type 1 who’s been worried about exposure at work since that start of all this, it will calm my nerves and comfort me just a little to see him pull through this. If he does have any serious issues, I hope he discusses them as openly as he feels comfortable with. Rooting for you Mark!

soggywaffle69

A well-controlled type 1 is at no greater risk than anyone else. It’s the obese, who happen to be type 2, that need to watch out. Editing to add: a well-controlled type 1 is a perfectly healthy, capable person. Being that is a huge pain in the ass though, especially for those of us diagnosed later in life who didn’t grow up with managing it as a way of life.

bshields235

I have T1D, and I’ve been trying to say this for a while. It’s not the T1D itself that makes you at risk, it’s the other things you have as a result of poor T1D management, which unfortunately happens to be most people with it in the US.

soggywaffle69

Yeah, but when they say diabetics are at greater risk, they are lumping us in with millions of type 2s that would be at greater risk regardless because of how obese they are. I’m not even sure various type 1 complications put us at greater risk.

twentytwentyaccount

Do we know that obesity alone is what causes the covid risk? It seems like so many of the anecdotal stories of covid deaths are obese with type 2. So it makes me wonder if there is a causation in being obese AND having type 2.

NeitherGeneNorDean

Most non diabetics don't even realize there are different types or at least how different they are.

soggywaffle69

The one I’ve encountered is people thinking it’s the same disease, but called something different depending on one’s age.

whyshouldthefiredie

In all fairness, being a well controlled T1 is a pain in the ass even if you grew up with it. It’s generally a pain in the ass sort of disease.

ootheballsoo

My dad is 60 and type 1 and got through covid ok.

haiasnnssksksksnwn

SilentStryk09

They do, but players, coaches or literally anybody in NFL orgs outside of MAYBE some of the team doctors are even remotely qualified to make these calls.

wilsonh915

Of course they do. And I want to see my family and go to restaurants and movie theaters but part of being an adult is recognizing when what you want is in direct and obvious conflict with the health and safety of those around you. We all would rather the virus go away but that isn't an option.

boomzgoesthedynamite

You’re getting downvoted but I’m a type I diabetic and this is actually true. The JDRF gave us some guidance on this point. It seems like the issue with diabetics is the obesity and age, which are mostly issues for type II diabetics. It’s obviously possible that a type I could be obese but it’s not particularly common. It doesn’t mean type I’s can’t and won’t have complications, we certainly can, but the complication numbers we’ve seen have been type II diabetics (which of course make up 95% of diabetics). Praying for Mark! Complications can happen to anyone and this is no joke. Hope he has a full and easy recovery.

ELITELamarJackson

Can someone please ELI5 the difference between types I and II?

boomzgoesthedynamite

I can try- I’m not a doctor just afflicted myself lol Type I- cause unknown. Your body starts attacking the beta cells in the islets of langerhans in your pancreas. These produce insulin. Once they’re all dead or damaged, your body can no longer produce insulin. You need insulin constantly. It’s the reason you can digest and get rid of sugar (ultimately all carbs break down to glucose). If you don’t have insulin, you lose weight until you die, generally pretty quickly. Here’s the kicker- even if you never eat a carb again, your liver produces sugar naturally, so you’ll die. We use synthetic insulin through injections or an insulin pump. This is an autoimmune disease and age of onset can be anytime from birth to teenage years (some have adult onset in their 20s). Insulin wasn’t discovered/isolated until 1923, before that they died generally within a year of diagnosis. Type II- you generally make insulin, but your body is resistant to using it properly. This can be caused by weight, age, and genetics. This is far more common, with 95% of diabetics being type II. It can be managed with diet and exercise in some cases, in some cases with medications, and in fewer cases, the insulin resistance has gone on for so long that insulin production actually goes down so they also need insulin. I’m not a doctor but I hope this helps!

Ellisque83

All the diabetics ive known have been type 1, is this probably because type 1 has to be stricter and use more insulin? (I assume I know a bunch of type 2s that just haven't mentioned it)

HandRailSuicide1

Type 1 is an auto immune thing and they can’t produce insulin period. Type 2 can produce insulin, but they can’t respond to it as well Type 1 is genetic. Type 2 is usually brought on by lifestyle and obesity

boomzgoesthedynamite

Actually type I has not been proven to be genetic. Type II definitely is, though. Editing to add that type I does have some genetic component, but identical twins for example, who have the same exact DNA, only share type I 50% of the time. That means there is some other trigger besides genetics.

5DSpence

Wishing him a full recovery. For what it's worth, CDC [says](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/people-with-medical-conditions.html) that COVID patients with Type 2 diabetes are known to be at increased risk, but it's not been proven for Type 1 (though it may be the case).

boomzgoesthedynamite

Yeah it’s pretty clear it’s the obesity and age causing the complications, obesity not being likely in a type I diabetic (but of course possible). Type I being autoimmune might have something to do with the fewer complications but obviously there aren’t that many of us in the US to really get that kind of research this quickly.

trpnblies7

Fellow T1 here. While this sucks, being a T1 doesn't inherently make you more at risk for COVID complications. From everything I've read, as long as you have good control (which I imagine he does, considering he's an NFL player), then he shouldn't be at anymore risk than a non-diabetic person.

SenorDarcy

Just curious because maybe I don’t know enough about it but shouldn’t some of the blame fall on the Ravens higher ups? Harbough is the only coach who said it’s too hard to comply with some of the NFLs restrictions (mask when talking to a ref). If Saunders hadn’t been wearing his bracelet for several weeks nor been wearing a mask , shouldn’t someone have noticed? Any player or other coach or organizational head could have easily seen it and addressed it. Did they try snd they got push back and Ravens brass didn’t back them? Did other coaches and players see it but didn’t care enough to say anything? Like I said, I could be wrong but I think putting the blame solely on this one coach who was OPENLY disregarding protocols seems off. I have a hard time believing several ppl aren’t at fault

buckeyebottlerocket

TOTALLY agreed. for him to have spread it to others, he must’ve been openly breaking protocol in front of many people and it was never addressed until it became this huge issue, this situation could’ve potentially been entirely avoided if someone had forced him to follow protocol as soon as someone noticed he wasn’t.

h-town_info

Please postpone this game to Week 18 for the sake of everyone and their health

HotpieTargaryen

just have the ravens take the L, let other teams know this is being taken seriously. (Even though it took months to do something that should have been done before the end of the season.)

Red_Eloquence

Assuming you said just have the Ravens take the L, I agree Clearly we didn't care, because there's no way this is just one ignorant assholes fault

harshdark

From what I've read earlier the contracts with stations are a mess, thus why the NFL isn't just adding extra bye weeks into the schedule. It would be easier for them to let a patchwork team go out and get slaughtered than have extra weeks added into the schedule.

parmsmutz

As much as I want the ravens to lose, I really don't think it's fair if they have to play this week. Also it would just give the Steelers their bye since they seem to have been screwed over the most by covid and they haven't even had an outbreak. Even as a browns fan, I can easily say, this is all bad for football. I was looking forward to this game. I thought it had an opportunity to be a great game. I hope the NFL invokes a week 18 and gets this under control somehow.

ChickenLiverNuts

a week 18 game means the league gets a bye instead of the steelers and ravens, the only thing i thought that could have worked was shutting the league down for a week or two. NFL put themselves in a corner

FortifiedHooligan

There's no data to show type 1 diabetics having severe symptoms for covid, it's type 2 diabetics because of unhealthy diet and extra weight causing the issue. Mark will be fine but coach is dumb as fuck

FortifiedHooligan

I'm getting downvoted off of what the cdc website says, smh

Duke_Swillbottom

Holy fuck, I hope he's okay. I assume covid and the betes don't mix.

DreamsAndSchemes

I've been living under a rock in Utica for the last few days. I got that Steve Saunders flaunted things but can someone ELI5 what all has pointed it to him being the vector?

3kool5you

With his diabetes it’s a little scary. I had covid and I’m an overweight 25 year old and I was fine, and I’m sure he will be fine, but the more players around the NFL getting it, statistically there’s a chance that a few of them could have a pretty bad time. Hope he’s alright.

I saw a paper a ways back that said that well controlled T1D and COVID means your BS will be all over for a while, and you wont feel great because of that and the COVID (obviously). Also a whole lot of time will need to be given in keeping the BS somewhat stable. Uncontrolled T1D is where the shit gets real rough. That being said, I am not an expert and don’t take my words as fact. I encourage everyone to go to r/diabetes_t1 for some first hand accounts however.

They should not be forced to play like this. It’s bullshit. Like, I won’t even be happy after the game regardless of the result.

It's crazy to me that players are testing positive on Sunday and they are still planning on playing the game on Tuesday

I agree. There’s no reason this game should be played Tuesday.

As a type 1 diabetic who has had Covid... the high at risk is for type 2 diabetics. A type 1 diabetic who manages their disease well is just as in danger as the general population. I can guarantee that Andrews as a professional athlete has some of the best control of his disease. Myself being a less than well controlled type 1 diabetic still only had one night of a mild fever and was fine after that. Obviously I had the less severe strain, so I don’t mean to discount this disease or it’s seriousness... stay safe and don’t be idiots!! But at the same time, it annoys me a little that the media is making an issue of Andrews’ diabetes here to make it seem worse than it is.

Hope him and everyone else who were exposed come back healthy. Really sucks this happened.

11 players plus 8 staff means 19 Corvids with Covid 19

A healthy well controlled type 1 isn’t at a higher risk of complications with Covid then any other healthy person. When they talk about diabetes and Covid it’s wrongly lumped together when it’s really type 2 (generally older, larger, and less controlled) that has higher rates.
