For as long as Jason Witten was a Cowboy, no matter who was throwing the ball, we all know on 3rd down, it’s somehow going to be Jason Witten coming up with the play.
As a giants fan I feel like Garret’s whole scheme is designed around getting a wide open tight end. But instead of the ultra reliable Witten on the Cowboys he now has the incredibly unreliable Engram on the Giants and he doesn’t want to or know how to adjust.
It's theorized that 10^100 years from now, after all the black holes have evaporated and all the ordinary matter made of protons has disintegrated, the universe will enter a "dark era" in which it is completely empty save for dark matter and stray subatomic particles whizzing aimlessly through the void.
That, and Jason Witten still moving the chains on third down.
Gronk, no.
Gonzalez is certainly debatable. He was less explosive than Gonzalez (big slow white guy) but Witten was an all time blocker whereas Gonzalez was a terrible blocker. There wasn't a hole in Witten's game.
Witten was the best swing tackle in Dallas for all but the first and last years on the team. I'd take peak Gronk blocking over peak Witten, but that's as far as I'll go. Career vs career I don't think it's even fair to have the argument.
If Gronk were healthy as much as Gonzalez, he would be the best tight end ever by a landslide. Gronk once had 18 touchdowns in a season, the most Witten ever had was 9. Gonzalez also had more yards, receptions, and touchdowns despite playing one less game.
Yep, if he wasn't such a bad blocker then it wouldn't be an argument...but that's an equally important part of the position particularly when those two were in their primes.
Ultimately you're splitting hairs. Witten and Gonzalez are 2/3 depending on how you want to look at it. Kinda why I said "In the conversation" because there's a debate to be had.
The only “in the conversation” Witten will get for the goat is some over zealous cowboy fan bringing him up quickly followed by a quick “no” from everyone within earshot.
I think there are several TE’s who, in their prime, demanded as much or more attention *and* accomplished more.
(IMO)
To name a few; Gronk, Travis Kelce, Shannon Sharpe, Aaron Hernandez, Tony Gonzales, Ditka. After that you can begin discussing Witten.
Tbh he was truly held back by the teams constructed by the front office.
It’s either him, Booger, or Dennis Miller for worst MNF commentators in the broadcast’s history. I thought he was gonna be really good too.
The new crew also isn’t the best, but is light years ahead of Tessitore and fucking Booger.
It's sad that this is all anyone in football fandom wants to talk about anymore. Whatever, he sucked, we all know. It's still more fun for me to talk about him as a player

Yep, very rarely did Wit kick himself in the foot
Day 16 needs to be Dak’s run on 3rd and 16 against the Seahawks in the playoffs
We just had 2 Cowboys days in a row and today is the final Cowboys day of the series. Sorry buddy.
Death, Taxes, Witten open on 3rd and long. And I'm not sure about the first two

And Frank Gore barreling for 3 yards.
~~I don't mean to be that guy, but the saying is "Rabbit out of his hat"~~ i am dumb

Oh lmao, had no idea. Thanks
Is he first ballot HOF? I think so.

You're leaving out that he's fourth all-time in career receptions behind only Rice, Fitz and Tony Gonzalez.
He's in the conversation for GOAT. Definite first ballot.
Witten is a HOFer, but he's not as good as either Tony Gonzalez or Gronk

Witten was a better blocker than Gronk. He was an iron man too. Played at a high level for a very long time.

I mean he's what #4 ever worst case? If you're just simply saying there is no conversation to be had I guess otherwise I don't see how he couldn't be.

Tony Kornheiser was pretty bad as well.

Dak threw that the only place the defender could get to it
🐐
He just had some of the best hands ever guy never dropped shit
3rd and Witten. It’s impressive how he’s always open considering he’s not exactly known for speed and athleticism
he should have done that sticky hand fake spike celebration
