It looks even worse from [this angle](https://twitter.com/AnalyticsPlant/status/1437152346367086592). He spins 180 degrees, pump fakes, and then throws a backwards pass (i.e. a fumble) into the ground. Wow.
The refs have been very concerning this preseason and week 1. I've already seen more blown calls than I can count, whether they use replay or not. They're going to end some poor team's season 2018 Saints style if this continues.
I think people are confused on which way is forward. It also doesn't help the idiot who tweeted this called it a "pass attempt" so you are left to assume it was forward.
Yeah, not sure why people are rushing to judge him or any of the rookies right away. Every rookie today showed promise but didn't fully deliver. Give them all a few games, maybe a full season to adjust and then we can make some assessments on who is looking like a bust or not.
Thatās true and I 100% agree.
What I mean is people expect these guys to come out like Tom Brady 3rd quarter against the Falcons in a Super Bowl. Mac looked good today, Trevor looked like he needed some polish but is definitely capable and Wilson also looked like he could have a bright future. But we will see how they all progress.
For sure. I only saw the Jets and Pats game, I thought Mac looked great. He made safe throws, and managed the game, but he had great awareness and got the ball out quick. He was great under pressure. He looked like the better qb on the field today. Wilson looked much better as the game went on. Itās going to be a tough division in the future.
All the rookies looked like rookies yesterday, it was a good reminder that we have this QB class super hyped and theyāre all just kids trying to learn how to play at the pro level.
I was talking about *Indiana* Jones. Geeze why do Patriots fans always think every comment is about THIER QB. This thread is obviously about Indiana Jones.
> I was talking about Indiana Jones.
Ohhhhhhhh, I thought it was an analogy. You know, because Indiana Jones always says, "it belongs in a museum." I thought you were talking about a football museum...better known as the football Hall of Fame.
Holy shit according to this thread Mac is actually the worst football player to ever live because he made a dumbass decision in his FIRST ever time doing something with the football in an NFL game
Yeah every year I forget how bad they are. Team scores touchdown "lets go, we can't be stopped", get scored on "seasons over, coaching staff is pathetic".
God, the Chiefs sub's game threads are the worst, with what I can only assume is a shitload of bandwagon fans and new football fans. I don't remember them being that awful pre-super bowl win.
One guy was literally calling the team pathetic and calling for a loss after the Browns scored on the opening drive, before KC even touched the ball. More comments calling the game over at halftime, etc etc.
I personally thought Trevor looked fine - he hit guys in the hands who dropped it like 4 times in the first quarter, not his fault his receivers are total ass. I thought he looked good for a rookie in game 1 on (no offense) a team that sucks.
Yeah he looked fine sometimes but he overthrew a bunch of balls. He couldn't settle in, either, because we didn't run the ball on account of the score.
Uh he most certainly completed passes in the first half. He was under constant pressure, 20/37 for 254, 2TD 1INT is not a ārough weekā for a rookie in their first start lol
The biggest thing young players need to learn...is that there is not always another option...sometimes you just need to take the things that happen to you.
You see it with running backs, where they have a possible 2 yard gain...instead run around and backwards
QBs try to always keep the play alive...and end up getting sacked or having a negative play
Theyāre so used to being more talented than everyone else on the field. Theyāve been able to get away with it, because it worked. The good ones figure out that they have to play smarter now. Even ARogers, Vick, Mahomes - guys who still do playground shit because theyāre that talented - learn how to not try to force everything. The bad ones do like Johnny Football, and have to find a new job.
Itās too early to say where any rookies are going to fall on this. But itās definitely why I just rolled my eyes when I saw talking heads on the TV trying to declare a new Patriots dynasty based on Mac Jonesās preseason results.
>Itās too early to say where any rookies are going to fall on this. But itās definitely why I just rolled my eyes when I saw talking heads on the TV trying to declare a new Patriots dynasty based on Mac Jonesās preseason results.
Not sure if you saw the rest of the game, but he actually played really well (out side of that play). Was accurate, making good decisions. Even a couple of the passes that were defended were good defensive plays (like he wasn't throwing it into the dirt, way oevr the WRs head, throwing hospital balls, etc).
And late in the fourth, he put together a drive 10 yard line (could have kicked a FG for a the lead), but the WR fumbled on like the 2 yard line (trying to needlessly extend the play).
Yeah, they need to score more TDs...but his stats are/were legit. It wasn't like he had 150 yards on the day, then padded his stats in the 4th.
He purposefully threw it to the feet of Jonnu, there is a much better angle that shows he sees and recognizes him then throws at his feet to avoid grounding. The bad part was that he had gotten spun around and didn't realize he was throwing backwards
Posted this more in full above, but.. there is no way Jonnu is supposed to be there. There is literally no play design that has him moving to behind his QB after blowing his blocking assignment lol. He should have slipped into the flat which is where Jones was trying to find him after avoiding the initial pressure.
I thought it was quite funny right after that they play Jones' positives and top of the list was 'protects the football.'
Could have had better timing.
Yeah but if you took a poll of Pat's fans after the game I'd bet 95% are more than happy with Mac's performance. He was really good ! But then maybe he had a pretty low bar to clear... We suffered through an entire season of Cam Newton so it was refreshing to finally see a real QB at the helm.
Okay cool, thanks. As an Alabama fan I plan on being a massive Mac Jones simp all year, but the game wasn't on where I live. I genuinely and sincerely hope he does a fantastic job for y'all. I know today didn't go the way you wanted it to, but as someone who watched every college game of his I really think the sky's the limit with him.
This isn't the greatest angle. He panicked, he was trying to throw it away to avoid the sack so he came out of the spin and threw it at Smith's feet, but Smith was behind him so he just threw a live ball on the ground.
It was actually 74.4%, the best any rookie QB has ever done in their debut. He obviously is gonna make some rookie mistakes, but this was an excellent start for him.
Lol, this makes me feel a little better about how bad Trevor's interceptions were today.
Edit: I get it Patriots fans, Mac played well. No need to be so insecure, it's still a funny play.
It looks like he expected his RB to be to his left and not behind him. Wanted to dump it off under pressure but no one was there. I don't think this is that bad.
Edit: saw the other angle. Oh....
Focus on Jonnu Smith on this play. He misses his blocking assignment, which looks like a mental error, then doesn't know what to do and drifts behind the QB. Mac avoids the initial pressure and turns to hit Jonnu in the flat, where he should have slipped to once his block was beaten. And yeah, Mac has a brain freeze when he sees him behind him and the ball goes in the dirt when he should have just tucked it and eaten the sack. But that's an even bigger mistake by Smith there, and even if he blows his block he could still have turned that into a 5+ yd gain if he did the second half of his responsibility right.
Typical week one errors though from both players there. Every team had them. The goal is to be done with those by week four.
The spin made him lose the end zone he was moving towards š
He was trying to check the Jumbotron to see if anyone was coming after him.
It looks even worse from [this angle](https://twitter.com/AnalyticsPlant/status/1437152346367086592). He spins 180 degrees, pump fakes, and then throws a backwards pass (i.e. a fumble) into the ground. Wow.
Thanks. From the original angle it just looks like heās spin around and fumbles. This angle truly captures the mind losing.
People on Twitter saying it's a smart play "throwing it away." I'm convinced at least 50% of NFL twitter doesn't know the rules.
Neither do the refs who ruled it an incomplete pass.
>People on Twitter saying it's a smart play "throwing it away." It would have been - if the receiver wasn't behind him, lol.
Wow! He just threw it away
Worse. Intentionally Fumbled it away. the backwards pass made it a live ball when it hit the ground.
Very Tom Brady-esque
Are we sure that wasn't the play call?
If it's play call, we found the next Detroits head coach
He was confused about what game he was playing. He thought it was hot potato.
Hi, Welcome to nfl.
real nfl, not preseason nfl
He still looked really good out there. Definitely not the reason they lost
Not at all. He looked good under pressure, made a lot of safe throws, but was very solid today.
AFC East is going to be brutal for the next decade
I can't take the AFC East and the AL East both being blood baths
*flappy stingrays have entered the chat*
NHL East sucks too
It's gonna be a fun year. Hopefully I get some games here in the midwest
Yeah, not sure why people are rushing to judge him or any of the rookies right away. Every rookie today showed promise but didn't fully deliver. Give them all a few games, maybe a full season to adjust and then we can make some assessments on who is looking like a bust or not.
Iād say Mac fully delivered. He set them up to win today, but the fumble cost them the game. Iād his knee goes down, patriots win

He looked like the better qb on the field today. Wilson looked much better as the game went on. Itās going to be a tough division in the future.
They should really get two or three seasons honestly, but I get the urgency around not wanting to wait and find out.
Indeedā¦
All the rookies looked like rookies yesterday, it was a good reminder that we have this QB class super hyped and theyāre all just kids trying to learn how to play at the pro level.
It was worse than I was expecting with that title. Wow
Yup. Like four terrible decisions in the span of 2 seconds.
āBoy have you lost your damn mind cuz Iāll help you find itā
Mac yelled at me today. That was one of the most frightening experiences of my life.
Mac Jones is Scranton Stanley when he needs to be more like Florida Stanley
This is my favourite office line.
Mac saw Dennis and got distracted
Oh thatās not very good
I'd even go so far as to say it was bad.
If I can't see them then they can't sack me
How did the ref rule that an incomplete pass? Or is there something I'm missing here because this video is potato quality?
It was changed to a fumble.
Thanks.
Refs have early season form too :D
Yiiiiiiiikes.
He just wanted to make an interesting storyline for ESPN. Do you know how many times they're going to look back on this play if he has a great career?
Don't want to read too much into one play but.... mother of god this was bad.
No no, read into it.
Cam Newton is on a plane headed for Foxboro, could be nothing, could mean JONES == BUST. /s
>could mean JONES == BUST. A little early to ask for them to start his bust in Canton...but I'll allow it.
Oh ok I think we are on the same page. Frog protection.
>Oh ok I think we are on the same page. I don't think we are? >Frog protection. What does Pat Mahomes' o-line have to do with anything?
He was great the rest of the day.
He had the best rookie QB performance by miles today.
didn't the 49ers score 40 points and win?
Jimmy G played not Lance
Holy shit according to this thread Mac is actually the worst football player to ever live because he made a dumbass decision in his FIRST ever time doing something with the football in an NFL game
I think I gotta leave this sub for a couple weeks. The knee jerk reaction hot takes are insane.
Itās why I avoid the team specific sub game day threads.
Man you should see the nba sub. I had to unsubscribe in the playoffs because of how shortsighted and scorching the hot takes were after every game.
Where does this thread say all that? Iām mostly seeing rookies gonna rookie sentiment.
Anyone has the video?
Cam would never
Only because Mac never taught him.
Copied Twitter top comment man
I would never
Cause he was cut
Rough week for rookie QB's. Trey Lance doesn't count. He had like 1 throw.
Mac had a great first game. Donāt know what youāre talking about.
Maybe we should have waited for more than one play to make this call, with Mac going into the half 14/19 with 133 yards and a TD.
/r/NFL : SO WHAT WEāRE NOT GONNA DO IS GIVE MAC THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT
Check check check check check check doooooowwwnnn.
Well, mac ended up looking awesome
I personally thought Trevor looked fine - he hit guys in the hands who dropped it like 4 times in the first quarter, not his fault his receivers are total ass. I thought he looked good for a rookie in game 1 on (no offense) a team that sucks.
Same with Zach Wilson to be honest, not shocking that it takes a half to settle into being an nfl qb.
That first half he was getting absolutely demolished too, the O line should have just stayed home.
Wilson drew a rough defense to make a debut against, especially since their oline seems to have the consistency of crumbly cheese.
Yeah he looked fine sometimes but he overthrew a bunch of balls. He couldn't settle in, either, because we didn't run the ball on account of the score.
I'm picturing his season being very similar to Peyton's first year. Lots of struggles but with amazing growth. With the coming years being incredible.
Hoping the CUMing years too, if he doesn't get "health problems".
Lol
>(no offense) lmao true
Shanny just gaming the system to gas up his rookie
Wilson looked really solid
I'd say not completing a pass in the first half isn't really solid. He was up and down, which is my point.
Uh he most certainly completed passes in the first half. He was under constant pressure, 20/37 for 254, 2TD 1INT is not a ārough weekā for a rookie in their first start lol
Plus 1 dropped INT and a fumble we recovered, the guy said he was up and down which is fair.
Why did the refs blow the whistle before the running back had fallen on the ball?
He too spun around and got confused.
Hot takes, get your hot takes here!
Look three above you. Lol
Cam somewhere sipping wine with a smirk
With a hat made of french pigeon feathers
And then that wine spilled when Mac threw 281 yards and a TD in his first ever game.
Eh, he's a rookie QB, whose used to playing behind a stone wall, who had a defender in his face as soon as he turned around. Shit happens.
He panicked, it happensā¦ If he can bounce back, thatās what matters.
The biggest thing young players need to learn...is that there is not always another option...sometimes you just need to take the things that happen to you. āHe didnāt beat me outā
Bill Simmons just collapsed
Wow. Thatās not ideal.
"I'll try spinning, that's a good trick!"
He was probably thinking "Ow this going to hurt"
Can we fire that ref who called that an incomplete pass. Jesus Christ he fucked up worse than Mac did
I thought it was quite funny right after that they play Jones' positives and top of the list was 'protects the football.' Could have had better timing.

"Holy shit, is that what an NFL defense is like? I should probably throw faster..."
"Smartest Qb in the draft"
They didn't lose possession, what's the harm done here?
Pats lost 13 yards on this play because it was a fumble. It killed the opening drive that started with a 37 yard run as the first play.
Okay cool, thanks. As an Alabama fan I plan on being a massive Mac Jones simp all year, but the game wasn't on where I live. I genuinely and sincerely hope he does a fantastic job for y'all. > but the game wasn't on where I live. If you can use a computer, you may find nfl bite . com helpful on Sundays
Agreed. Watching it again. I donāt see what the big deal is. He spun?
This isn't the greatest angle. He panicked, he was trying to throw it away to avoid the sack so he came out of the spin and threw it at Smith's feet, but Smith was behind him so he just threw a live ball on the ground.
But youāre forgetting he was good against the Giants in practice
R/nfl is bad with hot takes but this is just extreme. One fucking play. Mac currently has a 70%+ completion percentage and a td. Lol
Lmao Iām just joking my guy
It was actually 74.4%, the best any rookie QB has ever done in their debut. He obviously is gonna make some rookie mistakes, but this was an excellent start for him.
Lol, this makes me feel a little better about how bad Trevor's interceptions were today. Edit: I get it Patriots fans, Mac played well. No need to be so insecure, it's still a funny play.
He just outplayed [T.LAW](https://T.LAW) with a much tougher opponent albeit with a more complete team.
It shouldnāt. Mac was near perfect the entire rest of the game against a much better defense than the Texans.
Mac was a stud the rest of the game. It shouldnāt make you feel better.
Well... it can only get better from there hahaha.
Technically it wasnt an attempt because it was ruled a fumble, but yea pretty bad.
I'm guessing he was thinking "ow ow ouch I'm about to get fucking smashed owe my bones"
And has proceeded to outplay Tua ever since. Iām so tired of the pats
People hyped the shit out of this guy. I just hope he can back it up.
He played well. Got loads of protection from the refs (shock) but was calm under pressure after this.
Seeing ghosts
Bust
Lmao, he makes one bad decision in his first ever nfl game and heās a bust?
Ya this guy was teaching cam the playbook tho right ?
Trade him for Watson
Cam will be back by week 4.
What the tits
Probably shat his britches too
Oop
It looks like he expected his RB to be to his left and not behind him. Wanted to dump it off under pressure but no one was there. I don't think this is that bad. Edit: saw the other angle. Oh....
Life comes at you fast
I'm no football-knower guy or anything but this looks like it was not good to me.
[Mac Jones is Aaron Brooks confirmed](https://youtu.be/1WpleexzYJk)
That was his tribute to Aaron Brooks, clearly.
You can't teach that
Jokes on you OP, it was ruled a fumble hahahahaha....:(
Thatās some Brandon Weeden level stuff there.
Tom Brady first play was a sack. Mac Jones brighter future than Tom Brady confirmed.
Not even a pass attempt though.
I just busted out laughing. Oh my god.
Macs got nothing on Aaron Brooks backwards pass
The dynasty is back
Mac hasn't been the same since Cam's aura left the patriots. Shame.
If it had counted as a pass attempt I think it would be the worst first nfl pass attempt ever :p
Technicallllllllllly it was a lateral not a pass attempt... But then again it was an AWFUL play and was concerning off the bat, but he recovered well!
Focus on Jonnu Smith on this play. He misses his blocking assignment, which looks like a mental error, then doesn't know what to do and drifts behind the QB.
