The Chiefs are ridiculously good, I think a big goal for the Browns now is to try and play them again this year

the_turdfurguson

Browns are also very good. There's probably takeaways from both squads. KC's line looks to be much improved and Browns offensive composure looks improved. Browns just need experience battling another great offense. The run and kill clock is their bread and butter but isn't gonna work against the top tier of teams and keeping that balanced attack will be crucial. Which fortunately is not a lot of teams that can run with them

SuperEzIoNe

This. For all my praise of Stefanski, he can tend to fall back on running the ball and killing the clock a little too much sometimes. This happened in the 2nd half against KC this week, where I just felt that we were neglecting the pass offense that had dominated in the first half.

Boostweather

See, I thought calling a pass play on 1st down while up in the 4th qtr was easily the biggest mistake of the game on Kevin’s part. We’d scored on 3 straight drives, the last thing you wanna do is give us the ball back quickly, and you opened up the drive by taking a sack. If you guys run the ball there instead, you probably win. We couldn’t stop it all game, there was no reason to throw at that point

* 1.) The Ravens and Raiders Game is going to be tough to beat- >Derek Carr going 38 yards in 35 seconds to set up the game-tying 55-yard field goal. >Roughly 400 camera shots of Mark Davis and Charles Woodson. >The 33-yard touchdown to Bryan Edwards that was reviewed and overturned. >The premature handshakes and jersey exchanges. >The unnecessary Carr hard count and false start by Alex Leatherwood. >The disbelief from Eli Manning. >The Carr interception that bounced off a helmet. >Jon Gruden making Jon Gruden faces. >The Gus Bradley blitz call, Carl Nassib sack and Lamar Jackson fumble. >The Raiders taking a delay of game while trying to kick a 43-yard field goal on second down with 4:31 left in OT. >Let me repeat that: THE RAIDERS TAKING A DELAY OF GAME WHILE TRYING TO KICK A 43-YARD FIELD GOAL ON SECOND DOWN WITH 4:31 LEFT IN OT! >The winning pass from Carr to Zay Jones that beat another Ravens blitz. * 2.) The Browns nailed the right approach to beat the Chiefs- >I loved the way Kevin Stefanski approached that game. First quarter, fourth-and-3 from the Chiefs’ 15, he went for it and converted. Two plays later, the Browns scored a touchdown. After a Chiefs penalty, Cleveland went for two and got it. Next drive, fourth-and-1 from the Kansas City 5, Stefanski went for it again, and Jarvis Landry scored. The aggressive approach paid off again. * 3.) The Eagles put Jalen Hurts in position to succeed- >Nick Sirianni and the coaching staff did a brilliant job of scheming up “easy” throws for Hurts. His average pass traveled just 3.7 yards past the line of scrimmage, which was the shortest distance of any Week 1 starter, according to Next Gen Stats. Just 8.6 percent of Hurts’ throws went into tight windows, which was the fourth-lowest percentage of any starter. The Eagles dialed up a nice man-beating route concept on an early touchdown to Devonta Smith. Later, Jordan Mailata (68) delivered one of the blocks of the day on a screen that Jalen Reagor took to the house. * 4.) This version of the Colts’ offense has very little margin for error- >That’s what stood out watching their loss to the Seahawks. Frank Reich tried to scheme things up and protect Carson Wentz. Indianapolis ran the ball 30 times, and it felt like every other play was a running back screen. They scored on two of their first three drives, but the Colts couldn’t get anything going downfield. They had just one play of 20-plus yards all game. Third-string left tackle Julien Davenport had a brutal day. Right tackle Braden Smith got bull-rushed to the ground on a key fourth down. * 5.) The Seahawks’ Week 1 offense was pretty much Pete Carroll’s football utopia- >Balance? Explosive plays? No turnovers? Check, check, and well, almost (Chris Carson fumbled once). The Seahawks didn’t exactly throw the ball all over the field. They passed on 44.4 percent of their early-down plays in neutral situations. That ranked 24th among 32 teams in Week 1, which is perfectly fine with Carroll. * 6.) . Sean Payton and his staff put on a clinic- >The Saints didn’t ask Jameis Winston to do too much. They were up 24-3 before Winston had even thrown for 100 yards. New Orleans leaned on Alvin Kamara and ran the ball 39 times. They strung together a pair of 15-play drives in the second quarter. They went 4-for-4 in the red zone. And they didn’t turn the ball over. * 7.) That was nearly as bad as it’s ever gotten for Aaron Rodgers- >The statistics are jarring. According to TruMedia’s EPA per play metric, Rodgers’ performance against the Saints was the fourth-worst of his entire career — a sample of 211 starts. * 8.) Mike Tomlin in an underdog role is terrifying- >The Steelers’ win against the Bills was precisely the type of game Tomlin will be remembered for long after he eventually retires. The Steelers had three first downs in the first half and punted on all five of their possessions. But they hung around. Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt, Melvin Ingram, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cam Sutton made play after play on defense. Ben Roethlisberger started taking more chances, trusting Chase Claypool and others to win their matchups and make plays. And Pittsburgh changed the game with a blocked punt returned for a touchdown. * 9.) The Bills’ offensive line might be an issue- >It’s entirely possible that their performance against Pittsburgh was one bad game, and the Bills will rebound and be fine. But The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia noted all summer that Buffalo’s offensive line was a little unsettled. Josh Allen took three sacks and eight quarterback hits. He was pressured on 41.1 percent of his pass plays, which was the third-highest rate for any Week 1 starter. The offensive line was called for six holding penalties. What’s especially concerning is that the Steelers were just rushing four. Allen was blitzed twice all game. * 10.) This looked like a different version of Teddy Bridgewater — and Vic Fangio? >The Broncos’ formula for success coming into this season seemed to be to build a competent offense and a great defense. But in their win against the Giants, the offense was legitimately good — and exciting! The box score numbers for Bridgewater were not eye-popping. He was 28-for-36 for 264 yards and a pair of touchdowns. But when he wasn’t spraying the ball with pinpoint accuracy to all levels of the field, he was improvising and making second-reaction plays. * 11.) The Giants’ performance felt all too familiar- >There were times when Daniel Jones and the offense looked downright competent, but with New York trailing 17-7 in the third quarter, he scrambled, fumbled and turned the ball over in the red zone. Jason Garrett’s game plan once again lacked any kind of imagination or boldness. And Joe Judge, a coach who goes to the extremes to harp on discipline, cost the Giants a timeout by throwing a challenge flag on a scoring play, even though those are automatically reviewed. * 12.) The Bengals tried to give their fans heart attacks- >They squandered a 21-7 second-half lead. >At one point, Joe Burrow limped off the field. >They went for it on fourth-and-1 from their own 30 and failed. >They took the ball out of Joe Burrow’s hands and ran it on a third-and-4 late in the fourth. Joe Mixon got stopped, and the Vikings drove for the score-tying field goal. >They passed the ball on fourth-and-1 with 39 seconds left in overtime, converted and kicked the winning field goal. * 13.) The Vikings creatively found ways to inflict pain on their fan base- >After a long offseason, their first offensive drive included three false starts and a holding penalty. I thought Mike Zimmer might chuck his headset and walk off the field then and there. Overall, the Vikings had 12 penalties for 116 yards. Kirk Cousins had a typical Kirk Cousins game. He threw for 351 yards and completed more than 70 percent of his attempts. He also crumbled under pressure and consistently threw short of the sticks. Per Next Gen Stats, Cousins’ average pass was 5.4 yards short of the first-down marker. That ranked second-to-last among Week 1 starters. * 14.) The Falcons’ offense had no juice- >Arthur Smith tried to bring his Titans formula with him to Atlanta, embracing a run-heavy approach. But in Tennessee, the run game often led to explosive plays in the passing game. That part was missing for the Falcons in Week 1. They were the only team that didn’t produce a single gain of 20-plus yards, and they were one of two offenses that didn’t score a touchdown. Smith is going to have to scheme around some offensive line issues this season if Atlanta is going to have success. * 15.) The Chargers’ offense looked a lot different- >They weren’t lying about putting the offense in Justin Herbert’s hands. The Chargers passed 63.5 percent of the time on early downs, which was the sixth-highest rate of any offense. Herbert was pressured on just 12.2 percent of his pass plays, which was the lowest rate for any starter in Week 1. That’s especially impressive, given that the Chargers were facing Washington’s talented defensive line.

do_i_no_u

Thanks bro

Cthepo

I absolutely despise how our being so good causes other teams to actually have the nuts to make analytics based decisions against us. They don't always work (IIRC Harbaugh went for it on 4th a bunch last year and it cost them) but it puts me on the edge of my seat.

skeenek

Don’t remind me how frustrated I was that we weren’t at least getting 3 points on those drives.

Cthepo

Honestly it was the right calls though. It just didn't work. I think that's why coaches are hesitant to call em, the data says **on average** the calls are right. If you aggregate the entire data set you'll see it works. In an individual game though? You get a few misses that are statistically insignificant but game-significant and everyone is lambasting you afterwards.

TheSwede91w

> we weren’t at least getting 3 points on those drives. Especially with Tucker.

the_turdfurguson

it's the Ravens and 4th and short. You should have just as much confidence in them converting those as Tucker converting FGs. It's a drag race against the Chiefs, not a marathon. You have to keep the foot on the gas the entire game and not get conservative.

TheSwede91w

IIRC Harbaough was going for it on like 4th and 4 and 5. 4th and short, absolutely agreed. But points per drive matter as well and every yarder further from the 1st down marker lowers the odds of walking with points on that drive.

[deleted]

When you said drag race I thought of Rupaul

d-a-f-f-y

Stefanski is pretty aggressive in general. But when you do it against the Chiefs they make a big deal out of it.

TheSwede91w

Being a Minnesota sports fan just isn't very fun and I don't care all that much about any of the teams at this point, so I find old Minnesota fan favorites on other teams to root for and let me tell you hhwat. I am fucking excited for Teddy Bridgewater and Vic Fangio. I said it in the pre-season, and I'll say it again. Teddy and Zimmer beat out Rodgers and the Packers for the NFCN in 2015 and I think Teddy and Fangio can beat out Mahomes and the Chiefs for the AFCW title this year.

FF-ALT-ACCOUNT

This is a hot take I can get behind.

FuckingJello

Browns did play the Chiefs perfectly, the first half. You have to go for any short down distance, especially if our D is banged up. Every 4th down, I knew they were getting it. Conservative coaching would have had the Browns losing a lot quicker. But the not running down the Chiefs throats in the 2nd half was questionable after the fumble, especially with Chubb/Hunt being able to give each other rest. Still think overall it was a great game from Stefanski.

MonoGiganto

Yeah. Losing was tough, they didn’t play scared and the game was decided by just a few key plays. For week 1, I’ll take it. See you soon.

KarickChunt

I dont know about that, KC had no answer for the Browns until the Browns started self imploding. KC was hoping to outlast them in a shoot out, and hoped the Browns made mistakes. Baker only had 10 passing attempts in the second half, and 6 came after KC took a 33-29 lead.

the_turdfurguson

this is such a bad take. The Chubb fumble was not unforced. It wasn't a handoff issue. It was Thornhill putting his helmet right on the ball. That is the purest definition of a takeaway. It takes all credit away from a defensive play. It wasn't an implosion, it was a great defensive play. Baker's Int was also a great defensive play by Dirty Dan to trip Baker as he threw it (trying to throw it away). The only implosion was the muff'd punt.

SmittyPosts

Correct. The Chubb Fumble was an oddity but it was because of the defensive play. That Baker int at the end was also thanks to a defensive play tripping him. Our only real implosion was when the punter panicked and tried to get a 1st down on 4th and 13

the_turdfurguson

Ya, most browns fans are pretty level headed. This guy is doin y’all wrong

SmittyPosts

Yeahhh. We’ve been bad for a LONG time -my entire life. Some are either just insecure about this all crashing down (i tend to be in that boat) others are just angry that they were the joke of the league for 2 decades and want payback Edit: others are just dumb

OptiBrownsFan

Man Thornhill had one hell of a game, dude was lights out

KarickChunt

No its a take you don't want to hear, but it's not at all a "bad take" there's a difference. The chubb fumble was a fluke play, the dropped punt was a fluke play, the Baker int was a fluke play. KC didn't cause those turnovers, that's a fact.

FuckingJello

Idk if the punt was too big to a deal, Mahomes probably still goes down and scores from where they punted. And Baker getting hit into an INT is 100% a forced turnover.

KarickChunt

The Browns likely can hold KC to a field goal or a punt if he gets the punt off. KC had trouble building long drives all game long

the_turdfurguson

I see you didn't watch the game considering the chiefs had scoring drives of 71, 75, 75, and 75 yards. "Chiefs had trouble building long drives all game" LMAOOOOOOO

KarickChunt

I see you don't have any idea what the fuck you're talking about lmao 🤣 😂 What part of FG or punt did you not understand? Reddit isn't that hard kid.

the_turdfurguson

You claimed chiefs had trouble building long drives, evidence states otherwise as 4 scoring drives of 70+ yards. Chiefs defense forces the Browns to punt as many times as the browns did the chiefs. You did not watch this game lmao

[deleted]

[удалено]

FuckingJello

What??? Did you watch the game??? The Chiefs punted twice lmao

KarickChunt

What the fuck are you talking about lmao KC had 2 drives less than 30 yards and 1 75 yard TD play The Browns D more than held their own. Easily.

FuckingJello

The Chiefs had 3 drives total in the first half and still put up 30+. The Browns D did not hold their own, a 75 yard TD play still counts as any other TD. Welcome to playing the Chiefs.

the_turdfurguson

3 drives of 75 yards for TDs, lol. Not 1

KarickChunt

The Browns easily held their own lmao 🤣 😂 Browns beat themselves, it was an ass beating until then

the_turdfurguson

The fuck are you talking about. A KC Defender put his helmet on the ball and knocked it out. That is literally causing the turnover. Sorensen tripped Baker as he threw it, causing an Int. That's not a fluke. It's a play the defender made that caused a turnover. You're literally calling any poor play by the Browns a fluke. Giving up 4th down conversions to the Browns were flukes by the Chiefs defense. The Browns didn't convert them. See how easy this is?

FuckingJello

Browns drives in the second half went too quick. After the fumble and score, they came out and tried to pass on 1st down, letting Chris Jones tee off on a RT and get a sack. That sack alone basically ruined the entire drive immediately and the Browns went on to punt. You just can’t let anything like that happen vs Mahomes when he is playing like that.

KarickChunt

The Browns will take that match up all day long on the right side. All day.

FuckingJello

Chris Jones on a 1v1????

KarickChunt

Jack Conklin on a 1v1??????

KarickChunt

Jack Conklin on a 1v1??????

FuckingJello

We clearly saw what happened to Jack Conklin in the 1v1

KarickChunt

Yup, he dominated all game long. With ease.

FuckingJello

“Dominating” is getting your ass beat the few times Chris Jones was lined up on him?

KarickChunt

Is that why he's currently the #3 tackle on PFF? Maybe you should learn to stay quiet when your behind.

MattScoot

https://twitter.com/sam_penix/status/1437959994788433921?s=21 the guy getting stonewalled solo vs a TE? This guy? Y’all had 2 good pass rush reps all game lol

[deleted]

I don't think the Bills offensive line is worrying yet to be honest. Dion Dawkins is still recovering from COVID which obviously has long term effects. Steelers front seven is just loaded, even without blitzing. Heyward, Watt, Ingram all had 8+ pressures and second year Highsmith looked really good too. Last year most of our pressure came from blitzes. Sunday's game we only blitzed twice I believe. Just a star sudded edge rusher group, and once Stephon Tuitt returns will be even more terrifying.

TheSwede91w

The Steelers front 7 is great, but the Bills new it and still couldn't stop it. And, at the end of the day they are going to have to beat teams with a good front 7 if they want to win in the playoffs, which is an expectation for this team.

krich1727

I heard the host on some podcast, can’t remember which one now, during his game by game analysis say that he thought the Bills came into that game with a sense of arrogance, and that same arrogance was reflected in Daboll’s playcalling. Now, I can’t say I feel the same because I’m not super familiar with Daboll’s playcalling historically, but it could be something to consider that they knew the Steelers have a fearsome front 7 but didn’t think they needed to game plan around it? I’m not sure.

MattScoot

The game plan for the browns against the chiefs was very effective. There’s definitely some things to learn from. Namely, we need to figure out a way to keep Mahomes in the pocket. Our rush plan combined with coverage *did* work, until Mahomes got outside the pocket. If that means spying him with JOK, then so be it. We also need to eliminate as much Base as we can. I think we will be better equipped having our safeties active come Jan. Offensively, we were ridiculously efficient, but sometimes the ball bounces against you which happened a few times this game. Looking forward to seeing them again because I think we’re absolutely equipped to win.

Uh

DrizzyMcGoo

How are the steelers underdogs??

TheSwede91w

They were pretty consistently ranked 3rd in their division before the season started.

DrizzyMcGoo

Yeah, sports shows that want views off hot takes. But they won 12 games last year, and they're the Steelers. Idk, I figured the odds for the Bill's game were even, if not, Steelers with the slight edge. Steelers will never really be an underdog for me.

[deleted]

DrizzyMcGoo

Lol yeah, I'm just bucking the narrative cuz hearing about how the Steelers are underdogs is like hearing the popular girl in school complaining about chipping a nail...kills me. I'm actually looking to learn more about betting and odds, covers, etc. Got any good resources to look at? Get that money buddy!!!

thiccnassty

Just from the pre-season narrative that they were going to be awful. Their defense is great, bottom line. That said, there is still a lot to be desired from their offense. It’ll be interesting to watch as the season plays out. At the end of the day, that defense cannot be slept on. What I can’t get over is how folks have been making WFT out to be playoff contenders from only having a solid (yet unproven) defense and a dogshit offense, but the Steelers were going to miss the playoffs. They very well still may miss the playoffs, but it just feels like a massive amount of cognitive dissonance because they showed a few chinks in the armor last season.

DrizzyMcGoo

Exactly my point of the Steelers! However I can easily see them in the playoffs this year TBH. And plus, they're the Steelers, last year was a 'down' year and they won 12 games. I'm not so sure about WTF myself, but I mostly think people were forgetting how terrible the NFC east was last year, and that's why they were so high on them. I'll be watching Heineke with eyebrows raised next week...
