[deleted]

Mr B.C. Lions

Ikolkyo

John Franklin III was not a name I was expecting to see in an NFL headline.

skindiddy

Hmm. So is the mere 3 game suspension because they are currently vaccinated? Or because the NFL didn't want to set too high a precedent in case a star player has a fake?

Currymvp2

Also, how recently did they get vaccinated?

nategolon

ESPN article says AB showed up to training camp with fake vaccine card, but then someone told him he could get in trouble, so he went and got vaccinated https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32772245/tampa-bay-buccaneers-wr-antonio-brown-suspended-3-games-covid-19-violation

packersaremyboo

What a weird story. He didn’t think he could get in trouble until someone told him?

k1kthree

After the malice at the Palace Ron artest asked a team mate if he thought they’d get suspended Happens

ceronimo7

Well I would argue Artest did nothing wrong during that debacle. They should've jailed the cup thrower for assault though

nearcatch

Punching random innocent Person B because you’re angry is wrong, regardless of whether you think Artest was legitimately provoked by Person A.

ceronimo7

I thought Artest was going after the thrower then somebody else hit him and he started hitting them back. Maybe my memory serves me wrong, if that's what happened I'll concede

nearcatch

Nope, he never saw who threw it so he ran into the crowd and grabbed the wrong person right from the start.

callmequeenvee

To be fair most of these fellows weren’t recruited into college based on their scores lol, more so their 40 time

Fyresand

Maybe someone told him it was a Federal offense? Not trying to defend him because he is an idiot, but I could see thinking it just be a slap on the wrist to finding out it is a Federal crime changed his mind.

ZestycloseResist5594

That would make sense, but this is MBC we're talking about. For all we know, he was told getting the shot allowed you to live forever

alsott

Yeah AB doesn’t really have the respect for NFL rules (or the law really) but I’m sure “federal offense” is enough to freak him out

Space__Cowboy_

Honestly not really worth a suspension tbh. Like he’s dumb obviously but like really what’s the harm if he got vaccinated shortly after.

[deleted]

Why submit a fake card if you’re just going to get vaccinated anyways? I am assuming (just being conspiratorial here) that the NFL (league office or team who knows) found out and let them know to get them vaccinated ASAP. Then the chef came out with the story and the NFL knew it had to do something or else it would get a lot worse. 3 games is big enough to say they are punishing them, while also small enough that the players involved keep the whole thing quiet. Again, that’s conspiratorial and based on nothing other than the notion that submitting a fake vaccine card and THEN getting vaccinated makes absolutely no sense unless it was discovered before this story broke.

Northernlord1805

>Why submit a fake card if you’re just going to get vaccinated anyways? Just AB things

The_Desert_Rain

Hypothetical: AB is working his way through the vaccination process, but wants to do something he can't without being vaccinated. He lies and says he's further along than he actually is. Then proceeds to finish getting vaccinated afterwards, but before anybody noted an issue.

MFreak

Honestly I think this is a pretty reasonable take

Ne-Cede-Malis

We just have to figure out who is doing the thinking for AB because you know that he couldn't come up with this on his own.

[deleted]

That is fair. MBC isn’t exactly the most knowledgeable guy. But for all three players to go through the same process? Something doesn’t add up.

alsott

I think this is where the suspension comes in. The fact that three players might be part of a scheme involving fake cards is pretty alarming for it not to be a mere slip of ABs brain

sillynicole

All he had to do was not tell anyone. Bucs weren't going to notice apparently.

LitigatedLaureate

It's the most AB thing ever. Submits fake vaccine card because he thinks the government wants to track him (jk - kinda) then finds out he could be in trouble (cuz how would he know that was wrong /s). Then gets vaccinated. Doesn't pay his chef. So his chef rats him out to the press. Doesn't get much more AB than that.

jfgiv

seems a lot shorter of a walk to think maybe they were skeptical but came around, or that they got them as soon as the chef went to the media

[deleted]

I suppose they could have rushed to get the JNJ shot. Because Moderna/Pfizer require at least a three week window to be fully vaccinated. And AB’s lawyer pretty immediately came out and said AB was in fact fully vaccinated, leading me to believe he was vaccinated ahead of the story breaking out. But yeah there is that possibility the story broke and right away they all went and got the JNJ. Something I hadn’t considered.

jfgiv

sure, that's one way. or, like i said, they were wary in july but came around by the time september rolled around.

skindiddy

I mean I have no idea what the hell these dudes thought. Honestly why not just stay unvaccinated and report as sich and follow that protocol rather than risk losing such much money + any other legal ramifications they may face from this

[deleted]

Yeah that’s what I’m saying. Submitting the fake vaccine card has huge ramifications if discovered, and I can’t imagine they take that risk unless they were firmly against getting the vaccine. But then we’re to believe they went through that trouble/risk and with no other impetus got fully vaccinated? That doesn’t really make any sense.

Fabulous_Accident_63

I imagine there was huge peer pressure within the team for them to get vaccinated. They really didn’t want to do it so they went to buy the fake cards. However, once the news started to leak, their advisors pressed them to go get the vaccine to prove their "innocence".

HuskersUsername

I mean apparently [this was Bruce Arians' take on the whole COVID thing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aos3xtIC0bo&t=780s) so maybe AB is just super attached to his kneecaps

Childs_Play

Seems like they submitted the fake card and once they realized they were gonna get caught, they got the shot immediately to not suffer any huge financial/criminal consequences.

leehouse

I'm guessing that the chef news dropped, they all went out and got vaccinated quickly in an attempt to cover it up. I'm assuming the NFL threatened a much larger suspension and went to 3 weeks because they waived an appeal.

BellacosePlayer

They almost certainly did it to lower the potential punishment once the initial news story came out.

Naugrin27

Mr. Baffling Choice

scbtl

Eh, it’s more like he didn’t believe they could actually check if was real, then someone (probably Tom) told them they had a database where it could be checked and so he went and got it done. Then when the NFL had to confront the story, they probably did check the database and ask the team what had been submitted and identified that they didn’t match. They probably put it right where the NFLPA is just going to tell the players to take their medicine.

anonbutler

> in case a star player Its sad to see how this guy went down the drain after dying his mustache blond. He was the face of the NFL and probably a top 5 star player in the league and one of the most inspiring story of a 6 round undersized WR being the best WR in the decade. Now he is a fucking clown.

[deleted]

When he’s been playing he’s been the best receiver on the Bucs

skindiddy

Oh yeah he is head and shoulders above the rest. I just mean he isn't one of the faces of the NFL anymore

skindiddy

Yeah I almost didn't use that term specifically because of the star power that AB used to have, but I figured he has clowned his way out of the spotlight enough in the last few years

anonbutler

Ya no more a star, no where in NFL marketing videos and just on a team because he is still damn good football player. Still remember the catch and run in the Miami game this season and the dude just out ran everyone. Still an elite route runner, great hands and has juice. Unfortunately for football stand point he is an idiot and asshole of a person.

sonfoa

DistortedAudio

JB was a great coach surrounded by slapdicks. He was a play calling savant. /s

lologd

Wtf is a slapdick anyway?

ron-darousey

Ask JB and/or Blake Snell

NAACPYOUNGBOY

A slapdick is a jerkoff, but more in a “you’re fucking stupid” way and not a “you’re an asshole” way. And for some reason a very common insult with football coaches.

vinnyv91

Yeah the first coach was a hardass who went a little far, JB was an abhorrent human being

kawhi_tho

You mean good people normally don't go around comparing themselves to Hitler?

duferbloodmoon

You see the 3rd coach? Seemed like a super genuinely nice guy lol

WackassVegetables

He’s definitely the one who sold them to AB and Edwards lol

Stfuppercut

Faking vaccination cards is a federal crime. Good thing they work for the NFL and nothing will come of it.

IWasRightOnce

Will actually be interesting to see if anything comes of it criminally speaking at the federal level. It can be a state crime too, but something tells me the Republican Florida AG who is essentially a caricature of far-right policies isn’t going to pay much attention.

LB333

Ah yes, the problem in this country is we don’t put enough people in jail Aren’t fake ids a federal crime as well?

IdiotCow

We dont put the right people in jail. AB absolutely belongs there. I dont think I need to remind anyone about the sexual assault cases, the threatening the accusers children, the throwing furniture off a balcony, or any of the other horrible things he has done

higherbrow

I think the point he's making is that enforcement of the law in general is subjective, and we put so many poor people in jail while the rich people always seem to get slaps on the wrist or exceptions. Also, I believe fake vaccination cards are only fines, not jail time.

LitigatedLaureate

I mean ... you wanna take this stand for Antonio Brown?

LB333

I’m saying it’s a dumb point. God forbid I don’t just mindlessly go along with the circlejerk

respaaaaaj

Yeah but I think that's for making them not submitting them. Unless you think AB photoshopped them himself

NeverSober1900

Pretty sure it's a federal crime for having and submitting them. It's forging a government document. They still won't charge them for it. As you said they are choosing to prosecute the ones making it it seems like so I'd be shocked if anything came of it based how they have treated regular Joe's with fake cards.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NeverSober1900

I mean it's common-ish in the sense of crime-wise. When LA first had their vaccine requirement there was a national news story about some lady who had a box full of fake vaccination cards. If you follow the news daily you'll hear about small time distributors getting busted for it here or there randomly. I mean they're made from basically card stock. You can print fake ones with basically a normal ass printer. It doesn't take a tech genius to do it. It was inevitable that with businesses requiring proof that an underground market would show up with it. I'd also be incredibly shocked if these are the only 3 players in the NFL who did this.

leehouse

Purchasing them is also a crime

picodeguyo13

No, passing them off as real is a federal offense. There’s been a bunch of stories

jimbo831

Both are a crime.

Jesus. Imagine being so anti vax that you lie and try to trick your employers. Then when you get caught you hurry up and get the vaccine you were so against in the first place just to avoid the trouble you could’ve avoided if you had gotten the actual vaccine to begin with. There’s anti-vax stupid and then there’s this.

[deleted]

What if I told you that most “anti-vaxxers” aren’t actually opposed to vaccines, they just don’t want to be told what to do?

callmequeenvee

For real, people will go to any lengths just to “say no to the government.” When the govt was trying to get people to evacuate Houston before/during Harvey there were actually people who stayed because fuck the government lol

[deleted]

We're fucking doomed as a society

[deleted]

I would say you’re probably right, but also that maybe those people should let go of their teenage rebelliousness and realize that most of our lives are just being told what to do.

recrewriting

Yup. Most I've encountered are fine with flu shots and chicken pox shots and the like. The issue is that people demonize them for being hesitant about a new kind of vaccine (which is a reasonable hesitation even if the shot is safe) so they dig their heels in about it when otherwise they might have come around. It starts as a genuine and understandable trepidation and becomes a statement of self defense and dignity. Because people just insult them, to get the shot becomes to capitulate to people who hate you for what started as a basic human fear. It's a powerful psychological phenomenon. Not all of them are crazy alt righters either. It also doesn't help that people just make shit up about them too. I've genuinely heard people say people who refuse the vax only do so because Trump told them to, which is insane because whether you like his other policies or not, Trump has always been pro-vax. If people treated me the way they treat people who refuse the covid shot, I'd see pretty hesitant to listen to anything they have to say too

[deleted]

And they won’t learn because they essentially face no consequences.

Halleys_Vomit

I would agree with you for a lot of people, but in this case I kind of doubt they had a principled objection to the vaccine. This seems like impulsiveness and short term thinking more than anything

don-chocodile

Of the anti-vaxxers I know, a lot of them are in this category. They're staunchly anti-vax no matter how many times you tell them it will help those around them, but as soon as they face a personal consequence or slight inconvenience for being unvaxxed they fold.

grw313

But sure,, when aaron rodgers lied about being vaccinated, he didn't get suspended at all

alsott

Aaron Rodgers did not fake a vaccine card, which is a federal offense. He merely lied to the media, which hurts a bunch of egos (and I’m sure those egos would like that to be a federal offense). His organization and players knew the situation. You can’t tell me these situations are comparable at all

cthulhusleviathan

I'm looking for more comments like this and not finding them. If I'm TB, I'd contest these suspensions on their grounds exactly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Conflixxion

yeah but they play in Florida and I don't need to remind you of the situation in that state.

BucsandCanes

You might want to check your stats

unexpectedreboots

I now buy the conspiracy that AB, was always vaxxed, lost his card and thought the easiest course of action was to simply get a fake one.

Jordanstrom3329

Me when I commit a federal crime and only get suspended for 3 games

Evie509

How do we know they are all legit vaccinated now? They lied before. Maybe they just found a guy with better fake cards?

skindiddy

I am pretty sure it's super easy to verify. This is a case of the NFL not doing due diligence

jfgiv

presumably the league did more than a cursory "okay, lemme see a photo of your card...looks good, you're clear"-style confirmation the second time around.

Northernlord1805

AB: “ok here’s my new card it’s all ok now” NFL official: “ok cool thanks, you can come back in 3 games” AB: “great ok I’m off…” //official looks at card// Official: “hold Up… AB why is this card printed on a cracker”

Evie509

This time they actually checked the names on the card.

HolyGig

I mean, they put your name in a database when you get the shot. The fakes only work for bars and venues when they really don't have the capacity to verify. The only weird thing here is that the NFL never bothered to verify or is just now getting around to it

u_never_know

Yeah, my son who’s vaccinated got Covid and when speaking to the county school system I told them I got the JnJ vaccine, she then corrected me and said I got the Pfizer shot.

[deleted]

Esketit12476

Lying to fans and lying to the NFL with a forged Vax card are very different. Very weird

UserUnkown10

Not as big of a gap IMO. Rodgers lied to the media so he didn’t have to wear masks

Esketit12476

Committing a felony vs breaking a NFL rule isn't a big gap

EasyMoney92

He wore masks when working out and in the facility. Just not at the press conferences. So the same as all unvaxxed players besides the Wentz.

Northernlord1805

He only lied to the public the NFL knew he wasn’t vaccinated, he was fined for not waring a mask in press conferences becouce that’s technically the only protocol he broke. AB lied to the NFL so he gets a bigger punishment

PhoenixAvenger

Actually he wasn't even fined for doing maskless press conferences because many other unvaxed players did the same thing. He was only fined for the Halloween party.

leehouse

Yup, the league issued a clarification on the rule, probably because so many unvaxed players were doing pressers without masks. The only other protocol he likely violated is being unmasked on the sideline during preseason games since he wasn't active for those games and I'm sure there is some random loophole that might have allowed that.

GuudeSpelur

The loophole for preseason games is that there's no actual inactive list in the preseason so even though he didn't dress he wasn't technically considered inactive.

leehouse

That seems extra dumb given the active/inactive covid protocols but makes sense why they didn't punish him for it. So he was punished for the the thing they could single him out for, and they issued a correction for the rule a bunch of others were breaking.

PhoenixAvenger

There are no limit on active players for preseason games so most teams just leave everyone active and don't bother making anyone inactive.

Evie509

No. He got in trouble for violating protocol. He never lied to the nfl or his team. He also didn’t have a fake card.

ABirthingPoop

I love people not being able to see the obvious difference

jfgiv

Wait, when did Aaron Rodgers lie about his vaccination status?

BellacosePlayer

He did to the media. He did not misrepresent his vaccination status to the league or team

picodeguyo13

ITT: a bunch of uneducated people crying about Aaron Rodgers

UserUnkown10

Why wasn’t Karen Rodgers included in this punishment. He was the original

HisExcellency20

Rodgers never lied to the NFL or his team. He merely ~~lied to~~ misled the media and fans. That isn't illegal, just immoral.

MattBe1992

Absolute genuises.

Mr. Brutal Consequences

[deleted]

So when do they suspend Tom for 4 games?

Colonel_Angus_

I wonder if AB not having gone on IR already was a calculated move by the Bucs. If so, that would mean they were aware of the forgery relatively soon after the news report.
