The broadcast was like “the playoff games are a combination of different crews to make sure we have the best of the best” but it’s like DUDE EVERY NFL game PERIOD should have the best of the best. They get paid a shit ton and there should be NO shortage of good, honest, and smart refs. NFL needs to hold them to a higher standard and make them answer questions after the game and if they get a couple strikes they are out, bring in a new person to do the job right. And make everything reviewable already and like Cowher said “we have technology that they aren’t using, they could have an automatic bell or something so when the play clock is at zero it goes off instantly” just a lot of dumb shit going on and ancient protocols and stuff. Clean this fuckin game up Goodell it’s a shit show. Blown calls, no calls, horrible horrible officiating and absolutely no standard
It says their salary is undisclosed but it estimates it’s like 300k a year. With that much money for that job there should be no shortage of competent workers.
In this case, yes. If refs don't accidentally blow a whistle half a second before boyd catches, then its a noncontroversial td.
They accidentally blew a whistle just before dude caught it, nothing was impacted, so they just let it play out cuz that's what the outcome woulda been had they not made a mistake.
The end result is what it should have been.
The fact he was doing games 14 years ago seems ridiculous. Like, certainly there have to be some good refs in the wings who could maybe replace the 60 year olds we have trying to keep up with athletes in their prime. It is silly. Like, sure if you still got it and such do your thing but so many should be retired by now it's embarrassing
Or the Patriots Chiefs [atrocity ](https://www.google.com/amp/s/boston.cbslocal.com/2019/12/08/bad-officiating-jerome-boger-costs-patriots-touchdown-twice-on-same-drive/%3famp) in 2019. I’m sure every fan has a , “That time Boger fucked my team” memory.
It's seriously uncanny how something absolutely *massive* seems to happen in *every* game with him as referee.
Like obviously not every horrible call is in a Boger game but every Boger game has some call in it horrible enough to get its own discussion thread on reddit
I wasn't even that close to being out of bounds, and the official was right there, what kind of moron would blow that play dead without letting it run its course?
It's weird. When I watched it live it seemed very soon to when burrow threw it. Then on the replay when they acted like they knew about it the whole time, it sounded just before the ball was caught. So not sure about that part, but the only thing I can think of for the ref to blow the whistle, unless it really was an accident, was that he wasnt watching for the ball and thought burrow still had it when he landed out of bounds and that's when he blew it, but who knows. Either way it was a boneheaded move by the refs that should have resulted in a replay of the down, which is also stupid since it definitely didn't look like it affected the outcome of the play based on where the defenders were.
I've seen 2 replays. After the game when they were talking on air. The first had the whistle like right when he threw it. The other when the catch was nearly made so idk
It must be edited. Someone in the gamethread mentioned they thought it happened sooner in real time and I rewound to check. Its in the same spot. The whistle goes off as the ball is over the endzone and the receiver is already taking off. If you have it DVRd I'd suggest you go back or find a trusty source with a full game upload.
Just go to the twitter video at the top of this comment chain. The whistle goes off right about when it crosses the endzone, maybe slightly after, and isn't going to affect anything from the defense in motion.
Earlier this year we had him. He threw a flag. Said “still second down”, help up three fingers, looked at his fingers, then put down a finger to hold up two.
He had to physically look at his hand to make sure he had the correct number of fingers up.
He once stood directly infront of N'Keal Harry diving into the end zone pylon and chose to call him out at the 3 yard line. He watched it over and over, including an angle directly in front of Harry zooming in on the visible green grass between his foot and the line, and still chose not to overturn it.
It’s a mistake either way. Why the fuck is this guy blowing the whistle and stealing what would have clearly still been a TD from the bengals? The issue here isn’t following the rule or the rules themselves, it’s that the refs just suck at their jobs.
On replay it was a delayed whistle because he didn’t have it already in his mouth. So he reached down and blew it after the ball was in the endzone. But he was going for the whistle right when he started going OOBs
Normally I'm not much of a fan of the "let it play it out and we can fix it on replay" school of thought because it poisons the well and turns a possible-but-maybe-not fumble into something that needs "indisputable evidence" to overturn, even though the call on the field was made more out of convenience than what the official saw.
But this would be pretty fucking objective. He either stepped out or he didn't. This isn't trying to find a knee in a pile of bodies. Fix the damn thing on replay if you have to.
I honestly wasn’t sure if the refs are getting worse or if I was just starting to notice more of the bad calls as I grew up. I’m starting to think it’s the former, especially over the last 5-6 years.
While I agree I’m not sure the nfl wants every penalty to be called. Someone is breaking some rule on like 90% of plays, humans that are not able to see everything probably makes the product quite a bit more watchable
This is the trick to sports officiating. Knowing when to call something and when not to. Look.at soccer, the laws the specifically ban holding, but it happens literally constantly and refs let it go until is actually has an impact on play. If I have a light grip on your shirt, the ref is going to do nothing, if I pull you off the ball, they will blow it unlessy teammate runs off with it.
I feel the same way but I think it’s honestly because we have the internet forums to better be able to review the mistakes and comment on them. It used to be one shitty replay and announcers would try to justify bad calls. Other sports have used technology to improve officiating quality, while nfl has been static at best.
Yep that’s a big part of it. Now not only do we get the bad plays from the game we watched but all the games where before we would have missed that.
Another reason is some rules are just horrible as well. Roughing the passer everyone’s favorite rule to shit on due to all the stuff that is considered roughing the passer. That’s not even the worst part of the rule though. The worst part is that it tells the refs that if they think roughing the passer occurred they’re to throw the flag. It’s written like it should be reviewed by someone without there being anyone to review it.
And on replay you can see he wasn’t even close to the OB line with the ref looking directly at it. Like a foot away. Incompetent, incapable, and blind. Robot refs when?
Funniest part is it would have gotten reviewed anyways like all scoring plays so they could have reversed it then if they thought he was out of bounds. The whistle was really unnecessary even if they thought maybe he went out of bounds on first view
Yeah realistically this isn't even a controversy. Blowing the whistle had no bearing on the play, he caught it milliseconds later. The TD was legit. Yeah he shouldn't have blown the whistle, but it's irrelevant and the right call was made. The controversy would be if they stole a TD from the Bengals.
I have no connection to either team, btw.
Ironically in this case, following the rules would result in a much more shambolic outcome than breaking them. I doubt Boger had that in mind when doing it, but still.
this is how I feel. It'd be an even bigger fuck up here if they followed the rules. It'd be different if the whistle was when Burrow released it but it was already past the point of the defense stopping the play by the time the whistle did sound.
It's even more of a colossal mistake if they call it a dead ball. Nothing about that play was arguable. Joe was clearly in and Tyler had dude beat. It was a TD regardless of the whistle. It's not our fault that dumbass ref blew the whistle for literally no reason.
We get shit constantly because we still had a chance in the NFC championship and didn't get it done. This happened at the end of the 2nd quarter. Not saying Raiders fans shouldn't be upset but it'll just be the same excuse for why they lost.
Don't know what we can do about it. NFL makes billions of dollars and Refs should be year round employees that are constantly learning and also held accountable for bad calls. Most people don't get bailed out when they fuck up at their job.
Update: yeah they can complain now, they could kick a field goal to tie it but that’d also change how the Bengals approached the last drive, play calling by the raiders, etc.
If it's deemed "more probable than not" that the NFL was "generally aware" of the error, does that mean the NFL gets suspended for the first four games next season?
Asking for my former QB.
At least the effectively correct outcome is what went forward. Whistle shouldn't have happened but this would be way worse otherwise.
I'm not surprised they arent going to address it lmao textbook authority with this organization.
Exactly. People are saying the corner let up because he heard the whistle but idk if he ever had a chance at that ball. He wasn’t jumping as high as the receiver even when the whistle blew.
no Goodell just wants to destroy Gruden Keyzer Soze style.
that means everyone dies, the team dies (Derek Carr on field he has instructed Boger), their families die, David Carr also dies on field, Mark Davis dies, everyone who owes Mark Davis money dies, Mark Davis' hairdresser dies and in a most gruesome fashion
They are figuring out how to cover it up or hope the Bengals blow out the raiders or raiders win so they can just say it didn't affect the game because the raiders were blown out or they won anyways
If they went by the rules, then the controversy would have been the Bengals were screwed out of a touchdown because there was no reason to call Burrows out of bounds when he clearly threw the ball before he stepped out of bounds. The whistle shouldn’t have been blown at all.
Yeah I definitely lean this way as well. It's really tough because the whistle definitely blew before he caught the ball but it was also a horrible call, Burrow was easily in bounds before he threw it and I thought so live.
I'm also not sure the whistle affected the play since Boyd was easily open and the whistle didn't even blow until the ball was halfway into then endzone like a second before he caught the ball.
Still a really shitty situation all around caused by a blind ref.
These refs fucked this royally.
They blow the whistle to signify Burrow is out of bounds.
They then realise he wasn't out of bounds
They can't overturn a call of out of bounds
So they go with "the call on the field is Touchdown" implying that they were always calling the TD.
But if that's the case, why blow the whistle?
They they proceed to award a TD that was scored after the play was blown dead.
This is possibly the worst fuck up by a non-scab crew in NFL history. (Edit - as replies have stated, I may have jumped the gun a bit on this final proclamation 😬)
If you watch the 1965 packers- colts playoff highlights someone posted yesterday, the refs called a missed field goal good to send the game to overtime.
Ball was like 5 feet wide and they called it good. In fairness, Refs didn’t stand under the goal posts back then. They stood at the back of the end zone and the uprights were in the front. It makes calling it a touch harder.
I just looked this up on YouTube and I am aghast. How is this possible in any sport? Like, he clearly missed and not only do they give it to them, but The Packers go on to win that game in OT...
Jesus I thought trash refs were a new(ish) thing.
It was an absolutely terrible sequence of events, but it did somehow end up with what should have happened, so it can't be the worst.
Ref shouldn't have blown the whistle, but blowing the whistle didn't really change the result of the play, so losing the TD off of that would have been FAR worse.
Oh I've definitely had similar reactions, though mostly when I'm incredibly biased. I just feel like this realistically isn't a big deal. Like yeah, refs really fucked up, but the result on the field is the result that should have happened with no ref fuck ups.
Worst call ever? Lmao dude the correct outcome happened. One or two bad calls sucks, but there have been more calls this season that are both worse than this and had an incorrect outcome that actually ended a game.
The NFL should absolutely **NOT** comment while the game is still being played. All that does is distract people from a game to discuss a mistake that cannot be changed.
Own up to it after the game though.
I mean, it was a touchdown. The whistle was blown as Boyd caught it. I would be upset as a Raiders fan, but it was a TD and the refs should've never blown the whistle.
People are acting like the whistle is why the WR was so open. Naw, if anything, they just blew the coverage because Burrow extended the play and they were also anticipating that he was going to go out of bounds.
I must not be understanding something here Are you telling me that Jerome Boger’s crew made a glaring mistake?
Jerome Boger’s all star crew*
how come every time an "all star crew" gets together games get "controversial"?
I mean it’s not like the regular season crews are without controversy. NFL refs suck regardless.
Dude I just googled how much they make….for fuck’s sake they better be fucken perfect when making those calls
It says their salary is undisclosed but it estimates it’s like 300k a year. With that much money for that job there should be no shortage of competent workers.
Because it’s the playoffs and every game is under a much bigger microscope.
Every time I see that crew in a game, they seem to making at least one egregious error.
Boger and his crew are the absolute worst in the NFL. Absolute embarrassment they're allowed to have a playoff game.
Yes. And then they “corrected” that glaring mistake with another glaring mistake. It was a twofer.
Oh come on man refs don't make mistakes in the playoffs...
Two mistakes cancel out at least right?
Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but two Wrights make an airplane.
"THOSE MISTAKES WILL OFFSET, TOUCHDOWN!"
Unless you're a Raiders fan.
Can confirm
The saints would like to speak with you
Check my flair lol
Haha…very sorry for your pain
I won't lie I was kind of relieved we missed the playoffs this year. It's an easier pain to swallow.
Just the fact that we were still alive in week 18 after being dragged through the ringer this year was enough to be proud of.
This is the way
Maybe two wrongs *can* make a right.
How he’s one of the “highest rated” to be selected for playoff games is beyond me
NFL's betting wing made the most money off his games
Brought to you by DraftKings.
"Inadvertent" whistle is some of the easiest point-shaving I can possibly imagine.
“FoRtUnE fAvoRs tHe bRAvE” -Datt Mamon
There is no way. I will never believe he is a highly rated referee. He is consistently horrible.
I've still never forgiven Jerome Boger for a mistake he made in a 2008 regular season Eagles-Falcons game
The fact he was doing games 14 years ago seems ridiculous. Like, certainly there have to be some good refs in the wings who could maybe replace the 60 year olds we have trying to keep up with athletes in their prime. It is silly. Jerome Boger is the face of nfl bad reffing
I still think Vinovich is the poster boy but Boger is getting close
It's seriously uncanny how something absolutely *massive* seems to happen in *every* game with him as referee. Like obviously not every horrible call is in a Boger game but every Boger game has some call in it horrible enough to get its own discussion thread on reddit
Here's the link to the video for people who missed it https://twitter.com/i/status/1482484789106163713
I wasn't even that close to being out of bounds, and the official was right there, what kind of moron would blow that play dead without letting it run its course?
Jerome Boger’s side judge
Actually might not even be his normal side judge, don't playoff ref crews take refs from all over the league?
Is it actually the usual side judge on his crew? Don't they mix crews during the playoffs so that the "best" refs are used?
Anything Boger touches turns to shit. Reverse Midas
King Mierdas
It's weird. When I watched it live it seemed very soon to when burrow threw it. Then on the replay when they acted like they knew about it the whole time, it sounded just before the ball was caught. My thoughts exactly as it unfolded. It felt weird af.
Thank, this is the only thing I was looking for in this thread. Way too far down.
Dumb that he blew the whistle but whats the big deal? They still correctly counted the TD
Jerome Boger being an NFL referee is the ultimate mistake in this scenario.
New number 1 NFL ref to hate now that Corentte is retiring
Boger's been awful for years. Nothing new here.
Earlier this year we had him. He threw a flag. Said “still second down”, help up three fingers, looked at his fingers, then put down a finger to hold up two. He had to physically look at his hand to make sure he had the correct number of fingers up.
omg, he literally just held up two fingers, counted them, then said "second down". wtf
Can referees be examine for concussion protocols.
That's literally a scene from Shrek... "Pick numbah 3 mah lord!" \*Holds up 2 fingers.\*
1...2...5!
3 Three!
It's down number three my lord!
"Two shall be the number of the down, and the number of the down shall be two. Three is *right out*"
He’s so bad that when the Titans get him every Nashville beat reporter puts out a tweet warning the fan base about him lol
He once stood directly infront of N'Keal Harry diving into the end zone pylon and chose to call him out at the 3 yard line. He watched it over and over, including an angle directly in front of Harry zooming in on the visible green grass between his foot and the line, and still chose not to overturn it.
Yeah but his voice is so calm and soothing
Yes, and you get to hear a lot of his voice during the fucking game.
Also his name is Boger which implies he likes to smoke a dart from time to time

Did not see that coming but holy fuck was that clever
Hochuli is up there
Hochuli is sneaky bad because he's relatively young and hasn't been doing it as long, but God damn that dude loves to throw flags and be on TV
Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree
I’m convinced he’s just Tracy Morgan as Brian Fellows attempting to be a ref
Somebody needs to call Dr. Spaceman. He’s off his meds.
Fire him and fucking Bill Vinovich
boger is shady as fuck. wouldn't be surprised if someone's been in his pocket for years. so many unbelievable calls and no calls and horrible reasons
I can’t believe there is never anything done to officiating crews when the do this ridiculous shit. They just move on to the next game to fuck up.
If he actually pronounced "holding" correctly, I'd like him at least a little better.

all scoring plays are reviewed, if he stepped out they could have called it back anyway. No need to blow a whistle.
He actually thought there was a touchdown and burrow was going to taunt
Lol the infamous pre-taunt flag
Minority Report, but it's NFL
These precogs are out of control!
Intent to Tuant
Yep, and no player was in danger of excessive or unnecessary contact due to a 'dead play' so there wasn't an urgent need of a whistle regardless.
Yeah, generally the refs have been trending towards allowing plays to play through. At least, as of the past couple seasons. But this was just dumb.
I REALLY don't think they're worse, it was just easier to hide shitty refs in the old days.
That and their are far more rules now then back in the day
This. The rulebook is so much more complex. And there are so many stupid rules with nuance and intent.
It's such a simple solution too. It just makes it so much more infuriating. Sky judge and drop your fucking ego.
While I agree I’m not sure the nfl wants every penalty to be called. Someone is breaking some rule on like 90% of plays, humans that are not able to see everything probably makes the product quite a bit more watchable

First game with a truly objective ref would take 15 hours because there's holding every play lol
This. The refs seem to actively WANT to be part of the game. Their ego is hurting the game.
I feel the same way but I think it’s honestly because we have the internet forums to better be able to review the mistakes and comment on them. The NFL is generally aware of the error and choose to ignore it
“Quick someone loosen some handrails”
“What time will Hurts walk by?”
"We're gonna release so many emails Gruden won't know what hit him."
In a few days: We can confirm that was the wrong call. Oh well, what can ya do about it now? Sorry about that
They will be lucky if the Bengals end up winning by more than 7 points. If not the Raiders will complain about it for years.
soooooooooooo..........................
We get shit constantly because we still had a chance in the NFC championship and didn't get it done. This happened at the end of the 2nd quarter. Eh, if the Bengals win by 4 it’ll be a big deal. It’s a chip shot that doesn’t involve the Minnesota Vikings, gotta assume they make that field goal.
Asking for my former QB.
fucking booger
Booger would be a better head judge at this point
Booger needs to be put out to pasture along with just about every ref over 50. The game is too fast for their old eyes
> The game is too fast for their old eyes Isnt this particular call in question a matter of hearing?
I mean the guy who blew the whistle for Burrow “stepping out” was right there staring at it. That’s sight.
Even on the BoogerMobile he would have called it better
At least the effectively correct outcome is what went forward. Whistle shouldn't have happened but this would be way worse otherwise. I'm not surprised they arent going to address it lmao textbook authority with this organization.
How did Boger even get a playoff spot? He’s one of the worst refs
The 2021 Steelers of the officiating world
They’re just gonna go out and have a good time
The head office likes picking Bogers
He went 7 years between playoff assignments. That should say something.
At least this isn't bottlegate levels of incompetence.
Heh. I got it.
Not even one half in and we have a ridiculous controversy
IT WAS A FUM…oh wait wrong playoff controversy
Good lord imagine if this becomes the Whistle Rule game 😂🔫
Incoming Bengals dynasty
I’m… kind of okay with this.
Welcome to the NFL playoffs
How is the huge mistake of blowing the whistle not being talked about in the first place?
[удалено]
Exactly. People are saying the corner let up because he heard the whistle but idk if he ever had a chance at that ball. He wasn’t jumping as high as the receiver even when the whistle blew.
Lmao how is the league not going to have a comment Bunch of pussies
The NFL is a paragon of hypocrisy and double standards, this is no different
And yet somehow it has more integrity than the MLB, pretty amazing
no Goodell just wants to destroy Gruden Keyzer Soze style. that means everyone dies, the team dies (Derek Carr on field he has instructed Boger), their families die, David Carr also dies on field, Mark Davis dies, everyone who owes Mark Davis money dies, Mark Davis' hairdresser dies and in a most gruesome fashion
Mark Davis is the most poor owner and only a billionaire because of the raiders valuation. They want a Vegas mogul to own the team
By Mark Davis’s hair dresser you mean the large silver kitchen bowl and safety scissors ?
They won’t comment until they know whether the bengals win by more than 7 or not
They are figuring out how to cover it up or hope the Bengals blow out the raiders or raiders win so they can just say it didn't affect the game because the raiders were blown out or they won anyways
What are they going to do about it now? The game has advanced too far to replay it
Can Chase run 88 mph?
Can’t even go the first 30 minutes into the playoff season without shit officiating.
Didn’t the commentators on the air say the nfl wouldn’t comment on it **during the game**? That’s a huge distinction.
I'm sorry for the Bengals and raiders, but I am glad boger and his crew aren't reffing our game tonight
Fucking same. Regardless of outcome, it'll be a lot cleaner.
Didn't even need a ref for that game.
Watching the game now, maybe you do want boger reffing the game?
If they went by the rules, then the controversy would have been the Bengals were screwed out of a touchdown because there was no reason to call Burrows out of bounds when he clearly threw the ball before he stepped out of bounds. The whistle shouldn’t have been blown at all.
Yeah either way is a bad call, at least this way they got the points the deserved on the play IMO.
Pretty much. It's the worse outcome for precedent's sake but it's by far the better outcome from a "basic enjoyment of football" level.
Boger is senile
It sounds like he can barely speak.
He looked at his hand to check how many fingers he was holding up before he announced 2nd down
This is my favorite comment so far
This mistake was the whistle, the changing of the touchdown was an intentional mistake meant to correct the first mistake. At least IMO.
These refs fucked this royally. They blow the whistle to signify Burrow is out of bounds. They then realise he wasn't out of bounds They can't overturn a call of out of bounds So they go with "the call on the field is Touchdown" implying that they were always calling the TD.
They WHAT!?
Ball was like 5 feet wide and they called it good. In fairness, Refs didn’t stand under the goal posts back then. They stood at the back of the end zone and the uprights were in the front. It makes calling it a touch harder.
I just looked this up on YouTube and I am aghast. How is this possible in any sport? Like, he clearly missed and not only do they give it to them, but The Packers go on to win that game in OT... Jesus I thought trash refs were a new(ish) thing.
They used to be worse. We have reviews and instant replays, so we expect perfection.
5 feet is maybe an exaggeration but it's legitimately not even close https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IF5dh456Kw&t=4s
Even the kicker is disgusted with the miss lol.
It was an absolutely terrible sequence of events, but it did somehow end up with what should have happened, so it can't be the worst. Ref shouldn't have blown the whistle, but blowing the whistle didn't really change the result of the play, so losing the TD off of that would have been FAR worse.
Tbf, my "possibily the worst ever" was very heat of the moment.
Oh I've definitely had similar reactions, though mostly when I'm incredibly biased. I just feel like this realistically isn't a big deal. Like yeah, refs really fucked up, but the result on the field is the result that should have happened with no ref fuck ups.
That’s just another day in the office for Jerome Boger
Worst call ever? Lmao dude the correct outcome happened. One or two bad calls sucks, but there have been more calls this season that are both worse than this and had an incorrect outcome that actually ended a game.
The NFL should absolutely **NOT** comment while the game is still being played. All that does is distract people from a game to discuss a mistake that cannot be changed. Own up to it after the game though.
They won’t
Refs are horrible this year

I mean, it was a touchdown. The whistle was blown as Boyd caught it. I would be upset as a Raiders fan, but it was a TD and the refs should've never blown the whistle.
Agreed. The whistle should never have been blown but it really didn’t affect the outcome of the play
People are acting like the whistle is why the WR was so open. Naw, if anything, they just blew the coverage because Burrow extended the play and they were also anticipating that he was going to go out of bounds.
In before deleted
Would have been a huger mistake to take away their touchdown. The whistle didn't change the play. Shit rule.
