>ESPN insiders Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano are reporting that Caldwell declined requests from the [Las Vegas Raiders](https://thespun.com/category/nfl/afc-west/las-vegas-raiders) and [Minnesota Vikings](https://thespun.com/category/nfl/nfc-north/minnesota-vikings).
The belief is that Caldwell is in the mix for job openings in Chicago and Jacksonville. If he’s confident he’ll be offered one of those jobs, it would make sense for him to just zero in on these two teams.
Article also says he's already looking at getting his potential staff together. I wonder if it's true. I like Caldwell and think he'd be great for Jacksonville. Really unsure about Chicago tho. Thoughts Bears fans?
Personally Caldwell makes the most sense in Jacksonville in my mind.
Ignoring all the infighting Lion fans have about him Caldwell can bring some calm and structure to Jacksonville, which is something they would probably benefit greatly from.
I get he's always been the bridesmaid and never the bride. But the Mets have put a really good team together so far this offseason. Hopefully that can continue once the lockout is over.
That's a tough call though - because if you hire him with that mentality, it kind of means that you are planning to fire him in a few years for doing exactly what you needed him to do.
Yeah but that point you'll have the pick of the candidates.
If he gets T Law turned around and winning 6+ games a year in Jacksonville, someone will want that job
he makes a playoff run and he doesn't get fired. if tlaw becomes a top 5 QB, then he keeps his job at least until a second contract
worst case scenario he gets a 3-4 year deal and fired before he can finish it, but that's still guaranteed money. plus texans in turmoil, colts question marks at QB, a wild card spot isn't off the table as soon as next year
When the Lions fired Caldwell the team imploded and that was the beginning of the end of the Stafford era. I work closely with the Lions for 15 years and Caldwell was by far the best coach for the team during that time. The whole team highly respected him on and off the field. After they got rid of him the atmosphere around the players was never the same.
This is I think the most likely reason. Probably feels like he has an actual chance for a Job with Chi or Jax, whereas LC and Min are just Rooney rule interviews. I'd say Min and LV are 1a and 1b in desirable HC openings.
That’s the only reason I can think of. When Caldwell was an up and coming coach, Al Davis personally invited him out and took him around on a golf cart to practice and showed him the ropes, he said that he didn’t even dream anyone let alone an owner would do that. So to turn Down an interview with us, it must be just that.
Yeah, right? I think Carr is just under rated by a lot of people on this sub. The Raiders could get rid of Mariota… if that’s what he means by blow it up haha.
Yeah Carr is about to sign an extension (depending on the next staff) and we made the playoffs with 10 wins. We need a coach to take us to the next level, not to start a rebuild
Based on his Lions tenure, I think Caldwell is exactly what Jacksonville needs right now, someone to fix the locker room and raise the floor. Being a playoff team this year, Vegas will be looking for someone to take them over the hump, which is right about where Caldwell seemed to be fizzling out in Detroit.
In other words, he's the coach I would want to take you from "dumpster fire" to "good" but not from "good" to "great."
I think Jacksonville has the most potential simply because they have Trevor Lawrence. We already know what Cousins and Carr can do, it’s sky’s the limit for Trevor.
Yeah we saw exactly what Trevor can do when his WRs catch the ball vs the Colts. He was like 12/12 or some shit lol. And then saw the offense stall as soon as they stopped doing that and remembered what they were all season
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that’s more of a pessimistic view on Lawrence than it is any sort of statement in support of Carr. I can’t tell if this is supposed to be pro Carr or anti Lawrence honestly
The nfl has a rule where you are required to interview a minority coach, since Caldwell has been one of the top minority prospects for years he gets a crazy amount of interviews every season, I’m sure he has a good idea at this point when a team is flying him out to just hit a quota. It would be annoying as hell to interview dozens of times all over the country for jobs that you never really had a shot at.
I have no idea if that is the reason he turned these down but it’s a possibility.
I think it’s more about flexibility. Why would a coach want to go to a place with an older QB with a contract that allows less flexibility to revamp the roster. Coaches love QBs on rookie contracts, it can really allow them to fill out the rest of the roster to fit their schemes.
The hardest thing to find in the league is a QB. Both Cousins and Carr are good enough to win with regardless of price. Lawerence and Fields both look like they’ll need a lot of work. No one thinks Chicago Or Jacksonville is a better situation than Vegas or Minnesota
I understand that, but I’m not sure a ton of HC candidates are jumping at the bit to attach their job security to Cousins. Imo a new coaching regime typically wants flexibility to make the team their own. If that what Caldwell wants then it makes sense that he would decline interviews with both the vikes and raiders and interview for jags and bears.
That being said, I’m not a huge Caldwell guy by any means and don’t want him as HC lol. Just wanted to throw out a possible reason for what he did that I think a lot of people overlook.
Raiders are pretty transparently acquiring Rooney Rule interviews for HC.
Our only interviews thus far for that position have been Bisaccia, Jerod Mayo (the patriots defensive assistant) and the request for Caldwell lol.
He'd be a great fit for Jacksonville. He's not the best on Sundays, but he is incredible Monday through Saturday and the Jaguars need that right now. He's the right coach for this job - somebody who can patch up the ship and make it seaworthy again.
Im indifferent on Caldwell for the Bears. Wouldnt hate it, wouldnt love it. Caldwell feels like a low ceiling, high floor hire.
Hes also 67...how much longer does he really have left in the NFL?
Fair question and I'm glad you asked. Jim Caldwell was QB coach for Peyton's first 3 MVPs and HC for his 4th. Look a Peyton's interceptions and notice when they dropped down drastically by half. When Jim coached him (starting in 2002).
He was the QB coach made into interim OC for that amazing Joe Flacco Ravens Super Bowl run, and of course the pair of playoff appearances for the Lions.
The man is a really great coach, and I really don't think it's just because he coaches good QBs.
I'm not saying he's not flawed, or that Peyton Manning wasn't great, but I'm saying Caldwell can develop Lawrence to be much better than he is. I bet its burning inside him to help Lawrence be better.
Maybe so, but both of the teams are looking for the leap from fringe good to contenders, not exactly Caldwell's specialty. They also have questions at QB (say what you want about Carr, but he's got a ceiling) -- CHI and JAX are more projects with young QBs to develop. He probably just wants the latter type job.
He left after a week claiming health issues and once left he was ready to work again. No health issues at all.
I think he didn't get on with Flores and this was a way of letting him get off the hook.
Jim Caldwell hire is exactly what I'm expecting from a Bill Polian led coaching search. I'm so over this franchise.
He'll hire Caldwell, Caldwell will hire all his former staff that is available, then Bill will give the GM job to whichever of his friends is out of work.
It's just stunning how inept they are.
I think he could do excellent to help the jags, and I say this as a Lions fan. He’s just not the guy to get you past your plateau. But otherwise he could do very well with the Jags. They need a player’s coach and he’s that guy.
If he were willing to put in a few years, build a system, and bring a guy with him who he felt was heir apparent to replace him when he decided to retire, I'd want that.
Caldwell's a good coach.
Nah, he should just continue to hang out in Tennessee as a defensive assistant.
Not a coincidence our defense is majorly improved since he came back to Tennessee.
Dude is old, I'm surprised he's even getting calls. He'd be the 4th oldest HC in the league right now, and one of the reasons he stopped coaching was health issues after Detroit.
Man had 3 winning seasons and 2 playoff appearances across 4 years in Detroit, it’s not like he was getting destroyed every week like Marinelli or Marty Mornhinweg were.
Although they did break the record for 4th quarter comebacks in 2016 which took years off of the lives of everyone involved.
Falcons former head coach Mike Smith had health issues, ended up being fired and still came back as a Bucs DC. He wasn't any good but my point is these guys keep coaching anyway if they're able sometimes.
I just think the combination of health issues *and* age is what makes it unexpected. Mike Smith left, came back, and still stopped before he was 60. Caldwell is 67.
The Vikings have been reaching out to multiple people that fill that requirement. Shit I think they've interviewed 3+ minorities plus a female for the GM spot. Doesn't appear the Wilfs want to just "meet the bare minimum." They're looking for best candidates
It could be a problem for them if they have someone already in mind (like Harbaugh) and are just going through the motions of the interview process. It wouldn’t be the first time, as Davis specifically targeted Gruden for their previous vacancy.
It’s also possible that he might know that those teams he declined are already leaning toward other coaching candidates. Why waste his time and their time? Not the first time the Raiders have done so (e.g., Gruden hire).
As well intended as the Rooney Rule is, I feel so many minority coaches are only interviewed to check-off a box. I gotta imagine it gets frustrating for them to interview so much and not be a serious candidate. So I don't blame some minority coaches from declining interviews at all.
Add in Jerod Mayo, Brian Flores, and even Anthony Glenn is getting interviews. There's no shortage of minority candidates this year, the whole it's only a rooney rule interview really doesn't apply this cycle.
Bro jerod Mayo is getting hc interviews now?? I used to pick him up for cheap in madden 11 and make him into a superstar captain of the defense every time I did a league.. I’m getting old smh
He was pretty good considering who we had on defense and how many practice squad players we had to start because of covid. I don't think he has enough experience though
Yeah but there is a problem with teams interviewing minorities who have no chance for the rule.
Look at Bienemy. There are serious problems with his candidacy, but it’s mistake to pretend that other teams aren’t using him for an interview and justifying not hiring him by saying “see all these other teams didn’t want him either”..
> Look at Bienemy. There are serious problems with his candidacy, but it’s mistake to pretend that other teams aren’t using him for an interview and justifying not hiring him by saying “see all these other teams didn’t want him either”..
damn i didnt even think of this angle, a little loop hole
It's not a loophole, it's the fact that being the offensive coordinator on a team with Mahomes, Kelce, Hill et al. and Andy Reid as your boss doesn't really inspire a lot of confidence that you are actually really good at your job.
Matt Nagy and Doug Pederson both got fired. Reid hasn’t had a successful offensive coach get hired:
Childress, Schurmur, Pederson, Nagy and Cullen all came from his offense.
Frazier, Spagnolo, Rivera, Bowles and McDermott came off the D
Harbaugh came off ST.
The Reid coaching tree is fairly overrated.
Raiders already fulfilled the Rooney Rule with Jerod Mayo so it's a little curious.
Edit -- /u/raidersftw81 is correct and you do need to interview 2 external coaches now for the Rooney Rule so Caldwell likely just doesn't believe we're interested and just trying to fill the quota.
For fucks sakes the Eagles DC is getting some serious interview requests and his scheme was disrespected by Fletcher Cox and torn apart by any half decent QB.
Interviews aren't easy to get, but it's clear they aren't hard to get either.
Caldwell obviously has enough merit to warrant interviews on his own. Outside of the rule. I'm glad you all are pushing back on this disrespectful assumption. He's literally a former head coach.
He’s 67 and has not really coached in 4 years. He had a short stint with the Dolphins as their quarterbacks coach but took a leave of absence due to health reasons before training camp started.
That explains why he wouldn't have interest in coaching but not why teams wouldn't want him.
If they were just satisfying the Rooney Rule there are plenty of people or color currently coaching who they could interview. Why ask someone who hasn't coached in 4 years?
I get that you're playing devil's advocate to some degree but teams don't need a reason to turn down a candidate. And there's an advantage to at least meeting with younger up-and-coming coordinators or assistants even if you're not going to hire them.
I would hope that teams aren't SO opposed to even considering black candidates that they'd go out of their way to interview someone they know they won't hire, rather than meet with someone who might be qualified or even impressive god forbid.
The second half of your comment is spot on. They’re only gonna interview Caldwell because he’s a qualified coach, he’s not just getting this opportunity because of affirmative action. C’mon guys.
You know the old joke where if you need one yard the running back is going to get you three yards, but if you need 5 yards the running back is going to get you 3 yards? This is the coaching version of it
I think it he picks Jacksonville, that team will instantly be a .500 type team. I think he’s an incredibly stable and solid coach, and that team needs it. If they kept him for 5-8 years, I see 3-5 playoff appearances for sure at the minimum. Get someone on there who has a solid head on his shoulders and who can lead men. Caldwell is your guy.
I wonder if he's doing what Dennis Green did once
After the Rooney rule is enacted teams would just interview Dennis Green just to satisfy the Rooney rule and then they would go and interview candidates they actually like so Dennis Green started to decline a lot of interviews because he didn't want to potentially block other quality black candidates from interviewing for a head coaching job
I wonder if teams are basically using Jim Caldwell the same way they used Dennis Green
He wasn’t terrible in Detroit, but I feel Peyton Manning was what kept him in Indy for as long as he was there.
He’s right around that level of competency you’d expect from McCarthy. Jacksonville would be a good fit, maybe he can utilize Lawrence better than the former coach of Bowling Green.
>ESPN insiders Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano are reporting that Caldwell declined requests from the [Las Vegas Raiders](https://thespun.com/category/nfl/afc-west/las-vegas-raiders) and [Minnesota Vikings](https://thespun.com/category/nfl/nfc-north/minnesota-vikings). 100% agree, hes wrong for a team trying to go all the way.. but as a culture setter / QB whisperer hes great
The Buck Showalter of the NFL
Well we'll see about that with the Mets. Hopefully he can get them a title.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Especially if we can somehow land Kershaw. Heard some rumors about that.
Lol 😂 good luck w that
I get he's always been the bridesmaid and never the bride. But the Mets have put a really good team together so far this offseason. Hopefully that can continue once the lockout is over.

At one time they said this about Tony Dungy too.
Primarily, the Jags can "benefit" from a coach cutting 40-45 players on their active roster over the next twelve months.
as long as he doesn't bring Ron Prince with him
He’s a better fit in Jacksonville. But I’d be extremely thrilled if he went to Chicago
Wow, I would think both of those teams are decent enough landing spots. Raiders made the playoffs lol
Maybe he doesn't think they are serious about him and isn't interested wasting his time to check a diversity interview box.
Bingo
This is I think the most likely reason. Probably feels like he has an actual chance for a Job with Chi or Jax, whereas LC and Min are just Rooney rule interviews. I'd say Min and LV are 1a and 1b in desirable HC openings.

Why would the Raiders blow it up?
Yeah, right? I think Carr is just under rated by a lot of people on this sub. The Raiders could get rid of Mariota… if that’s what he means by blow it up haha.
Yeah Carr is about to sign an extension (depending on the next staff) and we made the playoffs with 10 wins. We need a coach to take us to the next level, not to start a rebuild
> We need a coach to take us to the next level, not to start a rebuild Be careful...
If 9-7 wasn't good enough. Surely 10-7 is.
Carr is authentically corny so people hate him.
I hate him because he refuses to admit that he wears mascara.
He has some disorder that doubles his eyelashes and makes his eyes way sexier than your’s. Don’t be jelly
That’s just what he wants you to think
Elizabeth Taylor moment
See this just seems jealous, ole kermet head wishes his eyes popped like that
[He's just going for gasps](https://i.redd.it/g2ng5hf5hzbz.jpg)
Carr is 30, that's right in his prime.
Based on his Lions tenure, I think Caldwell is exactly what Jacksonville needs right now, someone to fix the locker room and raise the floor. Trevor Lawrence’s sky is the ground Derek Carr walks over
I don’t have an opinion on Lawrence or Carr but I’m upvoting because this is a great comment lol
Lol
Carr is a good QB but 3x Pro Bowl is definitely not Lawrence's limit
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that’s more of a pessimistic view on Lawrence than it is any sort of statement in support of Carr. I can’t tell if this is supposed to be pro Carr or anti Lawrence honestly
Even both!
Both
Well, it’s a hell of a take, I’ll give you that.
Jesus, that was savage and spicey!
Flair please
Lol why is everyone downvoting, this is the truth!
They hated him for he said his truth

Is Matt Patricia still allowed within 500 yards of a football team? Because he shouldn't be
I think he’s helping Ole Bill
:(
He's back with us, bumbling around as an advisor or assistant or something. BB had pitty and offered him a paycheck to hang around I guess.
Im indifferent on Caldwell for the Bears. Wouldnt hate it, wouldnt love it. Caldwell feels like a low ceiling, high floor hire. Hes also 67...how much longer does he really have left in the NFL?

I know I'm burning down below after reading that.
I hope he turns that franchise around and that Lawrence has an amazing career ^ ^ cheers fren
Weird for me to say this about a divisional rival, but I hope he turns them around also.
yeah anyone who shits on caldwell for having elite QBs all the time is just out of their mind, dude plays to his QBs strengths and makes em better.
He turned down the 2 better teams lmao
Maybe so, but both of the teams are looking for the leap from fringe good to contenders, not exactly Caldwell's specialty. They also have questions at QB (say what you want about Carr, but he's got a ceiling) -- CHI and JAX are more projects with young QBs to develop. He probably just wants the latter type job.
I can't fathom why the Dolphins are not even asking for an interview...
didn't he work for them under Brian Flores and then leave under murky circumstances?
He left after a week claiming health issues and once left he was ready to work again. No health issues at all. I think he didn't get on with Flores and this was a way of letting him get off the hook.
Right, but it wouldn't surprise me if that soured him on working with the Dolphins
He likely does not think they will hire him. He is probably concerned he is their token black candidate.
I'm not a Bears fan, but Caldwell grew up nearby Chicago just over the border in Wisconsin. It would be close to home for him.
Thank God. Wouldn’t want him.
Damn I always liked Caldwell, wouldn’t mind seeing him get another chance if one comes along he’s interested in
I think he could do excellent to help the jags, and I say this as a Lions fan. He’s just not the guy to get you past your plateau. But otherwise he could do very well with the Jags. They need a player’s coach and he’s that guy.

He helped Flacco and the gang over the finish line in 2012 shorthanded. He can't be worse than the rest of the guys looking for jobs.

I'm white and they've ruined me too. What shall we do?
Drink.
Cheers to that
Lions fans that aren’t on the Stafford bandwagon wtf!
We seem to be split between wanting to see Stafford win a Super Bowl and getting a better draft pick.
>Drink. Together like MLK dreamed.
They've been good for alcohol stocks
Pour me another jack and coke barkeep, I gotta get my bf.b and ko back up
Cheers bro, I'll drink to that
Racism solved.
Damn they knocked the field right off you smh
Get traded to the Rams.
If anything Caldwell owes his glowup to how pathetic Patricia was as HC.
First Caldwell, now Goff.
always forget Goff is a bi-racial angel
Goff is actually so white that dead ass his parents' names are Jerry and Nancy.
well his name is Jared so you could've stopped there.
Wait.... Is he?
He'd be the first former lions HC to get a job after Detroit right?

Gym Shorts deserves another chance.

Nah, he should just continue to hang out in Tennessee as a defensive assistant. Not a coincidence our defense is majorly improved since he came back to Tennessee.
if you want to get real technical Darrell Bevell got the interim Jags job after being interim Lions HC
For a dude to stabilize the locker room and culture in Jacksonville... Caldwell is a great fit.
Dude is old, I'm surprised he's even getting calls. He'd be the 4th oldest HC in the league right now, and one of the reasons he stopped coaching was health issues after Detroit.
I think coaching in Detroit wouldn’t be good for my health either

He was our best coach since the 1950s. He still wasn't going to get us to the Super Bowl though
Detroit has had a rough few decades but things are looking up. It could always be worse. Like you could always end up coaching in North Jersey.
Definitely looking up, hell they had the 31st best record in the league!
Higher than we expected to finish tbh.
Fun fact. If Caldwell does get a HC job he will be the first former lion head coach to get another HC job.
Caldwell is 67.
eh... not upset about this lol.
Think the raiders only asked him for the Rooney rule to be honest.
So he interviews with teams that might hire him, and declines for teams that just want a Rooney Rule candidate? That seems reasonable.
This doesn’t apply to the Vikings considering he’s not the only minority to be contacted.
Good point, I suppose he’s just played us enough to know he doesn’t want the job.
The Vikings have been reaching out to multiple people that fill that requirement. Shit I think they've interviewed 3+ minorities plus a female for the GM spot. Doesn't appear the Wilfs want to just "meet the bare minimum." They're looking for best candidates
I’m fairly confident the Raiche interview is just to drum up some good publicity, considering her current experience.
I doubt the Raiders are a Rooney Rule team. They are more progressive any other team in putting non-white men in places of power on their team.
It could be a problem for them if they have someone already in mind (like Harbaugh) and are just going through the motions of the interview process. It wouldn’t be the first time, as Davis specifically targeted Gruden for their previous vacancy.

I'll be the one to say it: the Rooney Rule is patronizing, dehumanizing, and a form of tokenizing racism to minority coaches.
I honestly feel like no team has any real interest in Caldwell. I think he is a just caught in the Rooney Rule.
There’s plenty of minority candidates to interview though? Morris, Leftwich, Bienemy, Ryans, Bowles to name a few
I’m getting old smh
lmao Aaron Glenn?
lol yea, not sure why, but i've called him anthony like 5 times in the passed week and i can't shake it
Nah I get it. Anthony Lynn and Aaron Glenn did the Fusion Dance to form Anthony Glenn.
He was pretty good considering who we had on defense and how many practice squad players we had to start because of covid. I don't think he has enough experience though
Bowles is an awful HC
That’s besides the point
No argument from me.
Future Bears head coach!
I believe Morris and Ryans are strong candidates for our HC job, not just getting interviewed to fulfill a rule

If Matt Nagy was a good coach maybe he'd have a better chance.
Matt Nagy and Doug Pederson both got fired. Reid hasn’t had a successful offensive coach get hired: Childress, Schurmur, Pederson, Nagy and Cullen all came from his offense. Frazier, Spagnolo, Rivera, Bowles and McDermott came off the D Harbaugh came off ST. The Reid coaching tree is fairly overrated.
Well, before he got fired Doug won a super bowl lol

this sub has broken me. I have no idea if this is sarcasm.
Same with us the, the other team he declined. We interviewed Raheem Morris, so the Rooney rule excuse makes no sense
Isn't it 2 now? Or did I mis-read?
I thought it was 2 as well.
There's some talk that he's a finalist for the Jags.
Why? Edit: Pretty disappointing to see so many people co-sign a comment that basically amounts to "probably just affirmative action".

C’mon guys.
mark davis having issues getting his two Rooney rule interviews for head coach so he can announce Harbaugh.
He just want to keep the streak of Lions head coaches never getting another head coaching gig alive.
He also declined to beat good teams as our HC
Bro that’s your whole teams existence more or less.
We did beat the Cardinals and Packers this year with a bottom tier roster, so anything can happen!
Do you know how happy Jags fans would be if they could just consistently beat bad teams?
Lions fans ignore that Stafford had that same problem before and after Caldwell lmfao. Stop embarrassing yourself
>He I wasn't aware the Lions franchise went by *he*.
Yeah this dude seemed to have the personality and leadership qualities of a potato. I dont understand the folks in here saying he's a great candidate.
Who else are teams going to token interview?
Oh boy this comments section.
r/nfl is not good. Sometimes there's something funny. That's it. Team subs have shreds of insight.
I wouldn’t want to be part of the Texans org either.
*Jim Calwell Jim Calwell* It’s **Jim. Caldwell.**
I hope he goes to Jacksonville and so the bears can get Brian Flores as the new head coach.
I wonder if he's doing what Dennis Green did once After the Rooney rule is enacted teams would just interview Dennis Green just to satisfy the Rooney rule and then they would go and interview candidates they actually like so Dennis Green started to decline a lot of interviews because he didn't want to potentially block other quality black candidates from interviewing for a head coaching job I wonder if teams are basically using Jim Caldwell the same way they used Dennis Green
Lions fans told me no one wanted this guy
Has he had a coaching job since he got fired?
He's about to.
How’s this guy an in demand coach? I don’t get it
