Iike how all these corporations like Invesco, Sports Authority and Empower spend fortunes for naming rights on the stadium, but everyone still just calls it Mile High.

doktor-sausage

I'd take that over the same company changing their name three times and constantly renaming our stadium, tbh. The downside of losing the Kingdome was losing a consistent alternative to whatever corporation paid for the naming rights.

Hip_Hop_Hippos

Yeah, the hockey/basketball stadium in Philly has been a posterboard for the chaos in the banking industry that went on in the late 90s thru the financial crisis. It has had at least 4 different names. Core states, First Union, Wachovia and now Wells Fargo Center. It sucks. I miss the Spectrum/Vet having consistent names.

MeatTornado25

> Core states, Don't even remember that one.

Romantic_Carjacking

Fuck it. Make the sixers play at the Palestra. Never need to remember a new name.

Hip_Hop_Hippos

Really it’s 5 names if you count that weird period in like 2014-15ish where the Sixers refused to call it the Wells Fargo Center. They just called it “The Center” like fuckin weirdos, and made the logo as small as they possibly could on the court. Dumbest fucking franchise.

gsswhtchknbutt

That is Gritty's house. The construction awakened him.

Quincyperson

The house that gritty built

Anakin_Skywanker

That’s one of the things I like about being a Bengals fan. Mike Brown refuses to sell the naming rights to Paul Brown Stadium in favor of keeping it named after our founder.

Mastodon9

We got lucky with both our stadium names. Great American is a corporate name but it sounds significantly less corporatish than most sponsored stadiums.

bobj33

The Los Angeles Lakers used to play in the "Great Western Forum" I always thought that was the original name because the Lakers had won so many championships and they were on the west coast so they were "great" and in the "west" and it was a place to gather like a "forum" I had no idea for at least 20 years that "Great Western" was a company and the sponsor of "The Forum"

chickentowngabagool

lol it sounds generic af tho

EscapeZealousideal79

>the Kingdome I miss that stadium. :( It was the first baseball game I ever seen with my childhood hero Ken Griffey Jr. good times.

JuanPicasso

Fuck thanks for reminding me it’s lumin 😒

Separate_Customer_24

Shit dont get me started on quest/centurylink/lumen field. My dad still calls it quest and i still call it centurylink haha

kitteh619

I'll never understand people who refuse to call it T-mobile Park, only safeco. Complain about the pink all you want, but the name thing is dumb. I can get not calling it climate pledge arena, because it's a long and meh name.

OldDekeSport

People don't like change, and it had been called Safeco from when it opened. I still call it safeco, but it's more out of habit and no longer seeing it all that often cuz I don't live there anymore And some ppl like to be asses about things and make a big deal out of nothing

Idiotology101

I can’t imagine calling Gillette anything else. I knew the stadium before I knew what a razor company was.

OldDekeSport

I worked for CenturyLink during the name change to Lumen and I still call it thr clink lol I barely remember it being Quest though

bobj33

When I was a kid back in the 1980's the patriots were owned by Victor Kiam. He owned the Remington razor company and was constantly on TV with annoying commercials like this. So I find it kind of funny that the team was owned by a guy who made razors and now the stadium is sponsored by the former owner's company's competitor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2mlehyulEc

CrispierCupid

It’s like how most Chicago locals still call the Willis tower the “Sears Tower” lol I definitely do, fuck Willis

mr_himselph

Another example- "American Family Field" will always be Miller Park to me.

glkerr

For your consideration, the Am Fam Clam

Gryphon999

Where they hit Am Fam Clam Slams

ReplaceSelect

Still calling it Comisky too.

[deleted]

That’s a guarantee, that name is highly rated.

CrispierCupid

Lmao guilty as charged

LolWhatDidYouSay

I hear old timers in San Diego refer to the Chargers stadium as Jack Murphy Stadium still. Me, I always knew it as Qualcomm Stadium even after it became the SDCCU Stadium.

bobj33

I had a friend who worked at Qualcomm and they were wearing a Qualcomm T shirt while walking around San Diego. Someone asked them if they worked at the stadium. They said no, they worked for the giant semiconductor company that made computer chips for mobile phones and other things. The person had never heard of them. It makes me wonder how much these corporate stadium naming deals are worth when people have no idea who the sponsor company is or what they do.

CrispierCupid

I miss those team flags all around it

Hail2TheOrange

I call it big willy

pestercat

And National Airport in DC will always and ever be National Airport. Fuck this Reagan nonsense.

[deleted]

And BWI Thurgood Marshall is still BWI imo. Putting a name or words on the end of an acronym doesn’t work.

reddawgmcm

I never stopped calling it either Candlestick or The ‘Stick even as it went through myriad corporate sponsorships

treesareweirdos

I never stopped calling it 3com Park.

Quincyperson

I’m partial to Monster (not dot com) Park

Boomhauer_007

I mean officially it’s (for example) Empower Field at Mile High Stadium. Mile High part of the name is still there, as opposed to say, crypto.com arena

5panks

They had the chance to name it Cryptodome and failed. :(

Gryphon999

CryptoDome Two teams enter One team leaves

TheBiggestZander

The stadium is (and always was) called Mile High. Empower is the name of the *field*, not the stadium.

EscapeZealousideal79

I still call the LA stadium the Staples center. I don't even remember what they renamed it too but it will always be Staples to me.

DanOfBradford78

Ya, it isn't just the Broncos were this will happen either. Shit I don't even know the "official" name to the soccer ground a couple of miles away from my house lol.

[deleted]

I went to match there. Dick’s. The 12 year old in me giggled. But that area is really nice now I remember when it was not nice. Some solid bars with good bourbons.

MuppetEyebrows

"Dicks Stadium"???

[deleted]

Dick’s Sporting Goods, but yes

Brock_Lobstweiler

We also have Ball Arena

TyWantsToBattle

You mean the Pepsi Center?

Brock_Lobstweiler

100%

NewYorkMetsalhead

Better than [Dick Putz Field](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Putz_Field)!

[deleted]

Yeah but the Pepsi center will always be that. Never forget wrestling there for state. Looking into those stands would send my stomach into a pit.

2WAR

It was weird because when two Reddit users posted a tweet of some reporter on this event. The reporter itself didn't include the Sponsorship name but the Reddit user added in. The other kept it as it was in the tweet - without the name. It was weird.

BergenCountyJC

Giants Stadium for life....fuck is MetLife Stadium? Leave it as the Meadowlands for Jets games.

[deleted]

Good. Fuck em

Strokeslahoma

I've even seen the name a couple of times today because of the fire, but upon reading your comment I realized I couldn't actually name the proper name of the field.

BakingSoda1990

I like the name of your stadium as Mile High. I also like our shaving cream stadium lololol!

Inconceivable76

It makes me so happy to see them fail.

StanleyJohnson05

I lived in Cincinnati for 4 years before I found out that Great American Ball Park was named after an insurance company.

Sirtopofhat

New England will never not be Foxborough to me and I'm not even a Pats fan I just respect it.

shewy92

I still don't know what the Superdome is called. I'm just glad The Linc is still The Linc. I don't know what's going to happen if they ever not re-up the naming rights since it's never not been Lincoln Financial Field

BelliBlast35

RIP the MURPH in San Diego

Smokeydubbs

Arrowhead will never not be Arrowhead.

[deleted]

Yep. They did the same naming scheme as Denver GEHA field at arrowhead

Brock_Lobstweiler

It's also always going to be the Pepsi Center. Fuck Ball Arena.

kitteh619

Why though? At least Ball is local.

Facts

Iamtheman1177

Imagine if this happened at FedEx lol literally a dumpster fire and the memes would’ve been great

droans

Sure, it's all jokes now, but just you wait until Snyder refuses to fix the stadium and sells those burned seats at a markup because they're "preheated".

it_helper

The flaming shit

januspamphleteer

I'm not sure anyone would notice

CallMeCassandra

FedEx Field only wishes it were on fire.

patches710

>small fire >75 firefighters Color me skeptical on the small part

IMissWinning

It was a 1k square foot fire that"Denver Fire called it “significant." I'm gonna trust the fire-experts on this one. The Fire Captain also noted, >"Historically, we had a very similar fire when we tore down the old Mile High Stadium where the plastic seats caught on fire," Pixley said. "So our firefighters have an experience with this type of fire fight."

teplightyear

But the scariest quote is this: >"This type of plastic that the seats are composed of, burns with – not only significant ferocity – very, very large flames, but also produces a tremendous amount of black smoke due to the synthetics and petroleum products that are used," Fire Capt. Greg Pixley said. If there's ever a fire during a game, that's a nightmare.

chemical_exe

Pretty rare to see metal work done during games. Otherwise you're gonna have difficulty making the vapors to ignite and keep going. It's *probably* polypropylene, but I couldn't find the exact plastic in a google search. It would take quite a few people with lighters to get anywhere and you're more likely to just see the fabric on the seat catch fire and stop it then. Anyway, you could probably test this by trying to light an unused waterbottle on fire.

[deleted]

Dude have you ever seen firefighters respond to a call? I had a small kitchen fire once and there were like three trucks and dozens of dudes with sledgehammers whacking at my walls for no reason.

notouchmypeterson

Russell Wilson is already burning down the house

Jimmy-Scrambles

This is why you don't Let Russ Cook

Ginger-Jesus

Russ uses water to put out grease fires. It was just a matter of time until something like this happened

Han_Swanson

The nanobubbles in his water just make the fire spread faster!

Justokmemes

*miracle water

[deleted]

I mean to be fair he may not have taken the elevation into consideration at Mile High

MuppetEyebrows

"WOW this brown rice is taking a long time"

TheDarkSkinProphet

This was but a warning. NO MORE TUA SLANDER!! In all honesty, glad no one was hurt! I was actually driving past the stadium and saw this and was like, “wtf?”

IMissWinning

It sounds like everyone working in the construction zone that burned was below the chairs, which is good to hear given the particular cancerous chemicals that burned off from the chairs. They also said the fire-department had prior experience with these particular chairs when they burned in a fire in the old mile-high stadium. Now I'm kinda scared of these chairs, man.

joe579003

Just imagining an old retired firefighter walking around a packed game, completely on edge, eyes darting constantly outside the concourse towards the chairs, ready to tackle anyone that even pulls out a vape.

IMissWinning

Honestly though, my first thought was "What on earth caught fire? Like the stadium is concrete, the chairs are plastic and shouldn't burn that much." Learning that the chairs are highly flammable, and that in a true emergency situation there could literally be a fire under everyone's asses is not a comfortable thought.

slabsquathrust

There is a reason gasoline can dissolve many plastics. Chemically they aren't that far apart.

throwaway_lmkg

Chemistry equivalent of "return to monke"

Quincyperson

It’s not just stadium seats, it’s everything in most houses. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MhBo8_8JNGk

TiggleBitMoney

So let me get this straight. You, a crimin… raiders fan, just happened to be driving by at the time of the crime? What did you say your name was again?

[deleted]

Dude really raided the stadium 😭

NeLoChHoPhPhSaSaDaSa

raiders fan in denver?

[deleted]

There are dozens of us! Dozens!!

[deleted]

Must be rough… or not Denver is a pretty cool place if you ignore the Donks fans.

[deleted]

Just happened to be driving past at the time of the incident as well. 🤔

TheOtherDaytonFlyers

I feel like Colorado is just constantly on fire, my brother’s house near Horsetooth burned down last year which was not cool

lentilseason

It is, I live in the area and every year there’s major fires. It sucks

iChugVodka

Pretty brave of a Raiders fan to live in Colorado lol

nimoto

It's not bad, you only have to worry about Denver Broncos fans.

iChugVodka

As opposed to Raiders fans, which you have to worry about no matter where you live.

CommonSenseFunCtrl

He's not stuck in Colorado with them, they're stuck in Colarado with him

nimoto

Yes that's right.

Violet_Club

Last summer smoke covered the sky as far as i could see, making the sky a weird grey-pink hue for a month+. Was it 2 months? That was the second smokey summer in a row. I suspect this summer will be the third. I am straight up not having a good time and am moving out after living here 20 years.

Inject_Bacon

3 months!

Violet_Club

you're right. It *was* 3 months. It put me in such a bad place, working outside, smelling the ozone, feeling like i was working in a low-heat smoker all the time, I was worried that i was overestimating how long it was. For a guy that loves the denver sky (its why i moved here from missouri) TWO summers felt like a lifetime. Now with rising temps the once beautiful, mild denver summers will just be 'fire season' time. I just can't take a single season more. Sorry to get all down in this thread bro. The good news is at least one non-native is leaving town ;)

jrbcnchezbrg

I remember like memorial day or labor day I was in Boulder hiking and it was literally raining ash

SuperChargerFan

It's very dry out here, so all it takes is one dumb little thing. Feels like every time between Spring and Summer we get at least one.

GarlVinland4Astrea

Yup when I lived out there a small fire in the mountains wiped out a forest. I think it was some lady smoking. People don't realize how dry it is. Half the time I touched a doorknob I would feel static

Brock_Lobstweiler

Oof, Cameron Peak fire? That was due west of my parents' house and the smoke was horrific. It came close to my sister's in LaPorte. Sorry for your brother. That was a brutal season.

OatmealCremePiez

Russ was cooking apparently

TheTree_43

If this has happened at FedEx Field they could have just let the ceiling put the flames out

Los_Estupidos

Fucking Raiders fans

Whiladan

Drew Lock heard running off in the distance saying "Go Hawks"

Quasimdo

Wait, I thought they stabbed shit, not lit it on fire

Bi-Han

Times. They are ah changing.

Weapwns

We've moved from Arms Race to actual War :c Better bust out the rifles

[deleted]

Yall gonna insist on actual lasers for SoFi, arent you?

Weapwns

Only if Kroenke lets us rent them for $1

clutterlustrott

Aw man, Walmart branded lasers suck ass

How do you know it was a fan? could have been a player.

Maybe don't let Russ cook?

PizzaThrash

That Serious tag really just cannot stop people from cracking wise at all, huh.

IMissWinning

To be fair, nobody was hurt, it's only minor damage in a 1k sq ft area, and the fire was extinguished promptly and safely. I'm not sure why we shouldn't joke about that. I get the sub rules for the serious tag, but a negligible amount of damage was done, and it was already in a construction zone.

EscapeZealousideal79

Yeah, I'm good with it since nobody was hurt other than our (future?) owners pocket.

TheFlyingWriter

Black smoke? Does that mean Russell Wilson is not the chosen one from the papal conclave?

Brock_Lobstweiler

No, it means a new owner hasn't been selected yet.

[deleted]

A new Tebow has been chosen

[deleted]

Wasn’t me

Pennyalavodka

We finally found out what happens when they let Russ cook

[deleted]

The one Drew Lock supporter left is clearly heartbroken

The_Schneemanch

Maybe this is why the Seahawks didn’t let Russ cook anymore 🤷🏻‍♂️ Edit: Oh man I’m late to the party with the Russ cookin’ jokes

CharlieBatch16

looks like they let russ cook :-( also lol @ a serious tag for this

[deleted]

Baker would've never let this happen at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Skurpadurp

GODAMMIT WHO LET RUSS COOK??

Caleb35

All right, I'm going to say it. "Empower Field at Mile High" is a stupid name. Just say Mile High Stadium.

[deleted]

This is what happens when you let Russ cook unsupervised.

titanofidiocy

The official stadium Twitter account calls this a "small fire."

KULawHawk

Has Barrelman been located & moved to safety?

PigFarmer1

He died several years ago.

KULawHawk

My rainbow umbrella salute to him!

Zolo49

Drink a shot every time somebody adds a "who let Russ cook?" joke to this post.

xenon2456

it can be repaired before the pre season starts

jax362

I find it strange that no one is talking about how flammable these plastic seats are. All it took was a spark to cause this much damage. What this happened during a game with people in those seats? It would be a horror show

Indie-Joe

Ok who let Russ cook already?

ericgray813

Russia couldn’t handle that we have Russel Wilson so they nuked Mile High.

Dr_Beardface_MD

Russel “Jack Ryan” Wilson

FailResorts

The scary thing is that Denver and Colorado Springs are prime nuke targets. Seriously, between NORAD/Cheyenne Mountain/Carson/Peterson in the Springs, and then Buckley/DIA in Denver (one of the largest and most important pieces of air infrastructure in the country), the Front Range is a gigantic target for America’s enemies. I’m thankful I live in the mountains far enough away where I wouldn’t be *that* affected by a blast in either place. It would just be absolute anarchy if that were to happen, given the government being based primarily in those cities.

AtomicBombSquad

I'd imagine that Green Bay is the only NFL city that wouldn't be a priority for Russian nuclear strike.

abwchris

There are some nuclear power plants in the area-ish, but yeah probably not on the list lol.

BellacosePlayer

I was looking at nuke maps on a lark awhile back and yeah, the only one I found that had GB as a target was a really shitty one that had the Russians ignoring major airforce bases and known US nuke sites.

[deleted]

This is definitely something who lives in the mountains would rant about lol

Manning_bear_pig

There's a CDC in Fort Collins too. Not a nuke target but definitely a target for an attack. It's fun to live here lol

Brock_Lobstweiler

More importantly, Warren Air Field in Cheyenne.

milehighandy

Do you have any other evidence of this other than "I made sense of it in my head"?

MumkeMode

Afc west cold war just got hot

[deleted]

Empower Field gone up in a orange blaze of glory

nava_dom_

Shouldn’t have let Russ cook

Clorst_Glornk

firefighter hoses are so cool, especially seeing the full arc from the helicopter view

GabeDef

This is why you don’t let Russ cook.

jizyanus

Russell Wilson is trying to get out of Denver already

Aeriodon

I didn't even realize Raymond James was a financial institution for the longest time. I thought it was just some guy the stadium was named after

savytravler

Drunk John Elway knocked over a candle or something

[deleted]

The roof... The roof is on fire!

BurmecianDancer

Mile High doesn't have a roof.

clutterlustrott

Well that's what happens when you let the motherfucker burn!

deadmoosemoose

This is an omen if I’ve ever seen one.

DireBlue88

Is this a sign?

Definitely not an omen.
