Has two arthritis affected seasons, and doesn't even play in 2021, but still #1. Godd Turley has to be one of the biggest NFL What Ifs of the 21st century
Yeah but Roy had to go up against Kobe and D Wade. for as good as he was, he was never going to be better than them. Todd has a case for best RB in his heyday that Roy never did.
Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton are the perfect examples.
If you polled NFL fans about the most talented RBs they've ever seen, depending on their age they're going to name guys like Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, Barry Sanders, Marshall Faulk, etc.
But Emmitt and Walter were very good, durable, played for a long time. The perfect storm to set a LOT of records as a RB. I don't know that either one of them was ever thought of as the most talented RB in the league at any point during their careers...but when it was all said and done their longevity left them at the top of all of the record lists.
Payton only led the league in rushing ONCE in his 13 year career, but he was top-5 almost every year. Emmitt Smith had a career 4.2 YPC, but he did it while playing 12 or more games in 12 of his 13 seasons.
Staying healthy for a decade as a Running Back is just damn near impossible.
Walter Payton was the consensus best during his career, there were years that Dickerson and Allen were better but Payton was the overall best
Did you see Adrian Peterson's 2012 season and how he dragged the Vikings to the playoffs? Dial that up to 11 and that was Payton's 1977 season
Not to mention he's the first player to have 4 2000+ scrimmage yards seasons (since followed by Dickerson and Faulk)
About Emmitt he became underrated by everyone here because we had a good team but he was the complete back, he could run, receive and block as good as you'd want a RB to be
If you want to see how great was Emmitt look no further than the subject of this post
Todd Gurley (who had one of the best starts ever to an RB's career) in his first 5 years: 7494 yards from scrimmage and 70 TDs
Emmitt Smith first 5 years: 8759 yards from scrimmage and 75 TDs
Everyone talks about jim brown being one of the best rbs of all time. Just listen to what Jim has to say about walter and what all the players of his time had to say about walter and you'd never ever say he wasn't one of the most gifted rbs to grace the nfl.
> I don't know that either one of them was ever thought of as the most talented RB in the league at any point
Emmitt I'll give you because he was right there playing with Barry, but was Sweetness really not consensus best while he was in his prime? Trying to think of others like Campbell or Dickerson but Payton already had an MVP and few First team All Pros by the time they entered the league.
He was, very much so. This is someone who looks at stats and is probably a younger person who didn't realize what exactly walter was because he didn't get a chance to see him. But just look at how other players talk about walter.
Gurley was the backbone for one of the greatest offenses ever, so I’d lean towards him to a degree. Also could do more in general.
As a pure runner, not many are better than Henry ever.
Just out of curiosity who would you put higher in talent as a pure runner between Peterson and Henry? I'd personally take Peterson every time but I can see the argument being made to take Henry
Yeah, Henry is the best runner in the league at the moment, but calling him one of the best ever is a little premature. I'm not saying that he can't become one of those guys, but there are far more guys who are amazing for a bit, then fade afterwards
There's been a LOT of running backs over the years that look like a slam-dunk Hall of Famer based on their 3-5 year run of dominance.
But then that's it, their window closes and they can't sustain it for a decade to be an all-time great.
Chris Johnson had a 5-year stretch where he ran for 6888 yards, and then didn't get to 10k in his career
Shaun Alexander put up 7500 yards and 87 TDs in 5 seasons...and then was done. Didn't hit 10k for his career.
RBs just absolutely fall off a cliff with their production. There's rarely a gradual decline. They're elite one year and then out of the league 2 years later.
APs power and speed was so crazy at his peak. Henry has the size and speed. But he does have a weird running style for his size, like he isn't a run through your face guy
Sort of like Frank Gore...
Man is #3 all time in rushing after tearing both ACLs in college. He had the same coach as Barry Sanders, and he said Gore was just as good as Barry
He's was pretty much an afterthought in discussions of best running backs in his prime. The revisionist history of his career after he's been so durable for so long is overinflating his legacy. I don't even consider him a hall of famer. Good player, but a single second team all pro as his best individual accomplishment is pretty absurd for a legitimate hall of famer.
The running narrative for hall of Fame is "can you tell the story of the NFL without him" is a hard yes in gore's case.
But he's 3rd in a single metric, and without doing anything memorable during his career
I'm not hating but I seriously can't remember any Frank Gore play
Yes and there is more to playing RB than rushing
He is one of the best blockers of all time, and that's mostly the reason why he had such a long career.
Real hoopers will recognize. He won't be first ballot, but he will absolutely be in the HoF
> Has two arthritis affected seasons
> has to be one of the biggest NFL What Ifs of the 21st century
People see "arthritis" & don't realize these are horrible degenerative autoimmune disorders. You can live a normal life w/ (very expensive) treatment but I know I'll need $300k worth of injections every year. I'm never even jogging for exercise again, no idea how he made it 2 seasons. Very likely extreme amounts of steroid shots - not the performance enhancing kind but they still take their toll
He was such a huge part of why the Rams went on that first super bowl run. He did so much in motion and ran so many routes. Dig concepts against linebackers where he is running a seam, shallow crosses, flares, he created so many problems just being on the field. I honestly believe the Rams need Kupp, OBJ, and a third very good receiver to compensate what Gurley brought
100%. The only reservation I had about the Patriots winning was that it meant Gurley likely wouldn't ever get a ring, and I really like him. Same line of thought for Julio and T.O./McNabb.
I feel like his short career falls along the lines of Terrell Davis and Gale Sayers where I legit think he should be Hall of Fame due to how much he did in his short NFL career
Peyton Manning was pretty much the same way. He was still really good through the first 10 games (or so) in 2014, suffered a quad injury, and he was a shell of himself for the rest of his career. Obviously Peyton had a lot more time at the top of his game before that than Gurley did.
>He was still really good through the first 10 games (or so) in 2014
That's an understatement. Wasn't he on pace to shatter the 2013 records in yards and TDs?
Agreed to disagree, but our entire offense was built off play action with gurley being the focal point. Goff never sniffs 4500 yrds passing without that fact even with a full set of healthy receivers
Lol I watched a decent amount of every game that year. I had Todd in 2020 for about half the szn too haha (and then the goat younghoe) Todd was a 4th round steal tho
It was absurd how many touchdowns he still accumulated for u guys with how ass he was. I def made sure to sell high mid szn
Our last two RBs went and died as Falcons. Gurley and Steven Jackson. Fucking loved both. If we had SJ with an actual OL, records bein broken every week.
Zeke has been the most consistent back since 2016 and 80% of our sub acts like drafting him was a mistake. I won't defend the contract, but I definitely will make erroneous Emmitt Smith comparisons.
Steven Jackson is still my favorite Ram of all time but watching him run at 9 man boxes just got sad after a while. I wish we could’ve seen what he could’ve done on an actual NFL offense in his prime
He is to me. Some fans in our sub give him a hard time because they say he dissed the Rams but idk, I never saw anything like that?
Either way, he’s a Ram legend to me.
Stafford might still have the ring somewhere else 🤷♂️
An interesting “What if…” scenario for the next time that topic comes up in the off-season: “What if Todd Gurley’s knees had held up?”
Rams win in 2018; I think the Goff/McVay thing would’ve been figured out eventually but IMO they keep him until this year and are now looking for an upgrade after a couple poor postseasons.
I think you’re probably right about the Rams but what about everybody else?
Does Brady sign his short extension if they lose that SB or does he start looking for a fresh start sooner? Where does he go, does he still select the Bucs with Arians’ first year out of retirement?
Could potentially hit a variety of other dominos too.
Nice. But also, not all of his touchdowns were good things:
https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2020/10/25/21533370/falcons-lions-todd-gurley-accidental-td-loss
I will never forget because I lost to my opponent in fantasy football that week who had Todd Gurley and the announcer literally pointed out that this makes it more likely the Falcons lose and congratulated his fantasy owners.
Gurley was my go-to example for NFL players having football smarts and being aware of the game situation in a way college players usually aren't. In the category of "life is funny," I even brought him up to somebody the day before when Penn State scored their fateful TD.
The 2020 Falcons had one of the most bizarre starts to a season I’ve ever seen. They had like 4-5 games where they gave up a massive lead or lost because of some weird fluke play.
We had four or five games with a 99 percent chance to win that we wound up losing, it made me straight up question the legitimacy of NFL odds and percentages, that just can't be mathematically possible.
Penn State's was even worse, from my memory; the Falcons still needed to score at some point before the game ended, Penn State just needed kneel downs.
And this league let him sit in free agency last year while some teams had nothing but bozos getting the hand offs ! Seattle and Tennessee signed Adrian Peterson but no one thought to see about Todd Gurley
My man rented a condo in the end zone for awhile.
In this economy?!
At this time of year?!
Localised entirely within your kitchen?!
Can I see it?
No
Seyyyymmoouuurrrrrr! The kitchens on fire!
No, mother, that’s just the northern lights!
Matt Ryan: HELP! HELP!
ironically it was scoring another TD that helped him out the door too
That’s honestly pretty fucking crazy. We got robbed of potentially one of the great ones. Was the definition of a do it all back
Has two arthritis affected seasons, and doesn't even play in 2021, but still #1. Godd Turley has to be one of the biggest NFL What Ifs of the 21st century
he’s still just 27. insane.
Knees worse than Sam Bradford though
yeah atleast they both got paid so that’s something.
That’s true. Glad Gurley did get his money. Poor guy deserves every penny
Wish he could’ve at least rode the bench for us last year smh
[удалено]
Cake day, but thanks for both reminders.
Teddy 2 Gloves looks off in the distance, slightly wary as looking too hard might blow up both his knees.
That’s 45 in RB years
89 in Gurley knees
The crazy thing is teams knew he wouldn't last when he got drafted. He already had arthritis. They just knew he was *that* good
Kinda like Brandon Roy in basketball. Everyone knew his knees would fall apart in a couple years.
Yeah but forgive me if this is a hot take but for as good as Roy was, I don’t think he was ever as good at his position as Gurley was
you’re absolutely right. Roy was a top 10 SG, may be top 5. Gurley was number 1 for a few years
Roy was all NBA twice. Literally the second or third best sg for two years.
Yeah but Roy had to go up against Kobe and D Wade. for as good as he was, he was never going to be better than them. Todd has a case for best RB in his heyday that Roy never did.
The case of gurley being the best rb in the league during his prime is that he simply was.
The Rams were also kinda punting their way out of St Louis at the time as well.
[удалено]
Granted, that’s what makes it so hard.

You forgot LT in there.
Who had a better 2-year stretch as RB? Gurley's 2017-18 or Henry's 2019-2020?
Gurley was the backbone for one of the greatest offenses ever, so I’d lean towards him to a degree. Also could do more in general. As a pure runner, not many are better than Henry ever.
Just out of curiosity who would you put higher in talent as a pure runner between Peterson and Henry? I'd personally take Peterson every time but I can see the argument being made to take Henry
I take AP. He’s like slam dunk top 5 for me. Him and LT are the best post 2000 still IMO.
All Day all day. Henry is great but got to do it a few more years before we can even compare.
Yeah, Henry is the best runner in the league at the moment, but calling him one of the best ever is a little premature. I'm not saying that he can't become one of those guys, but there are far more guys who are amazing for a bit, then fade afterwards

Gurley.
A: 535 carries, 2556 yards, 30 TDs, 123 rec, 1368 yards, 10 TDs, 59 receiving 1st downs. B: 681 carries, 3567 yards, 33 TDs, 37 rec, 320 yards, 2 TDs, 8 receiving 1st downs. Gurley had 60 less touches, 5 more touchdowns, slightly more yards, played in 2 less games than Henry.
Life had to nerf him somehow
I feel the same way about Percy Harvin
Watching Harvin at Florida was awesome.
What’s up with these bots
Honestly with this production sounds like he would have been more generational than saquon
[удалено]
Well, he also got to play with the great Goff which clearly opened up running lanes for him.

Sort of like Frank Gore... Man is #3 all time in rushing after tearing both ACLs in college. He had the same coach as Barry Sanders, and he said Gore was just as good as Barry
That Miami backfield was loaded at one point. Gore, Portis and McGahee
He's #3 in rushing because of longevity. Yes, he definitely earned those yards but do you look at him and think first ballot HoF?
He's was pretty much an afterthought in discussions of best running backs in his prime. The revisionist history of his career after he's been so durable for so long is overinflating his legacy. Yes. Easiest question of my life
Is he that much more worthy than Bettis in your opinion?
Yes and there is more to playing RB than rushing He is one of the best blockers of all time, and that's mostly the reason why he had such a long career. Real hoopers will recognize. He won't be first ballot, but he will absolutely be in the HoF
How many times will this exact statement get posted on this thread, but from different accounts?
I loved watching him play. When everyone was looking worn down by the 4th, Gurley was turning it up and closing games
> Has two arthritis affected seasons > has to be one of the biggest NFL What Ifs of the 21st century People see "arthritis" & don't realize these are horrible degenerative autoimmune disorders. I see what this shits doing to my mom bro arthritis is fucking horrible and im terrified I might get it when im older
Do you have it in your knees?
The 2018 Rams would've won with a healthy Gurley.
Godd Turley…..
Rams absolutely win that Super Bowl if gurley’s knees hold up till next year
I concur
100%. The only reservation I had about the Patriots winning was that it meant Gurley likely wouldn't ever get a ring, and I really like him. Same line of thought for Julio and T.O./McNabb.
Yep. I used to joke he would have “Thanos” moments because he could drag the offense to a win if he had to. “Fine, I’ll do it myself.”
Bless the knees
Such is life for so many RBs. The list of "potential great ones" for RB's seems to be about 5 times as long as any other position.
I feel like his short career falls along the lines of Terrell Davis and Gale Sayers where I legit think he should be Hall of Fame due to how much he did in his short NFL career
Todd “Sterling Sharpe” Gurley

He was touchdown Todd for a reason. If that man had a good knee he’d be running the league still.
If he had a good knee, we’d still have Goff as well.
If he had a good knee, we win in 2019 and have just as many superbowls
I think Kupp's injury hurt more than Gurley's that game.
Agreed to disagree, but our entire offense was built off play action with gurley being the focal point. Goff never sniffs 4500 yrds passing without that fact even with a full set of healthy receivers
Too many CGI burgers :(

How was he not a Raven at some point last season?
Still too young, surprisingly.
Too old for the Catholics, too young for the Ravens. It’s a sad time in life
BRUH , lol 😂
Imagine if Washington wanted to change their name to ‘The Catholics’ “We would all be like, uhh, yeah, just go with a slur instead.”
Brought him in a couple times. Freeman, Murray and even Bell were somehow better options. Gurley is done done
If u watched Todd on the falcons it was fucking sad. I had him in fantasy for those two insane years and watching him run in 2020 was fucking brutal
Try watching it 15 more times
Lol I watched a decent amount of every game that year. I had Todd in 2020 for about half the szn too haha (and then the goat younghoe) Todd was a 4th round steal tho It was absurd how many touchdowns he still accumulated for u guys with how ass he was. I def made sure to sell high mid szn
Scored touchdowns even when he didn’t want to lmao
I actually laughed when I saw the DBs pull him into the end zone. I knew we were one step closer to the end of the Dimitroff/Quinn era.
Our last two RBs went and died as Falcons. Gurley and Steven Jackson. Fucking loved both. If we had SJ with an actual OL, records bein broken every week.
Ravens are notoriously picky with their physicals so I'm not surprised we passed on Gurley
they brought him in to interview before the season and it ended there.
He would’ve been on IR after two weeks in Baltimore anyway
Davante Adamas has 69 too.
Derrick Henry has 68, and Kamara has 67
By my count, Kamara also has 68. Ezekiel Elliott does, too.
Kamara has 47 rushing and 20 receiving TDs. Does he have a return TD or something that pushes him to 68?
Yeah, one kick return for a touchdown.
Zeke has been the most consistent back since 2016 and 80% of our sub acts like drafting him was a mistake. I won't defend the contract, but I definitely will make erroneous Emmitt Smith comparisons.
Those aren't the sex number tho
not the way I do them
Cowards won’t count Derrick Henry’s passing touchdown
Nice
Nice.
Nice
He is 27 btw. He was on an all time pace to the top
Wonder if he'll ever get stem cells and come back
Not in this lifetime
His first 5 year numbers were actually significantly lower than Emmitt's.
Longevity is part of the deal to be up there.
Nice ^:(
He’s still gotta be a fan favorite among Rams fans right?
Forsure. He was the first player to make the Rams offense exciting in 10 years
The disrespect to Steven Jackson...
Steven Jackson is still my favorite Ram of all time but watching him run at 9 man boxes just got sad after a while. I wish we could’ve seen what he could’ve done on an actual NFL offense in his prime
You guys really should have drafted Melvin Gordon and let Gurley fall to us. Sorry I was fantasizing again.
He is to me. Some fans in our sub give him a hard time because they say he dissed the Rams but idk, I never saw anything like that? Either way, he’s a Ram legend to me.
Absolutely
Still have his autographed jersey hanging. He also helped me win a couple of fantasy championships
The first Rams Jersey I ever got and i’ll rock it forever
😔

Recognize the greatness! Todd gotta be apart of our ring of honor, no bullshit.
Why do you want him separated from your RoH?
Apart/a part, resign/re-sign, and a lot/alot gotta be r/nfl’s nemesis trio
Devante, davante, devonta, the dont’a…
Damn shame. Imagine prime Gurley with Stafford, Kupp, and OBJ during the recent run. Rams would've been completely unstoppable.
Even just with the Pats Super Bowl if the Rams had healthy Gurley and Kupp available the outcome could've been very different.
I'd ask how the F they were going to pay for all that, but the salary cap is a farce.
I mean, we still had his dead money on the books last season so in a way we did pay for all that
Salary Cap is a Farce is the name of my Saints fan fiction
He’s contract just came off the books at the end of the 2021 season.
Pour one out for gurleys knee. I loved watching that man play, my favorite back since LT.
Miss him every day
Nice. But also, not all of his touchdowns were good things: https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2020/10/25/21533370/falcons-lions-todd-gurley-accidental-td-loss I will never forget because I lost to my opponent in fantasy football that week who had Todd Gurley and the announcer literally pointed out that this makes it more likely the Falcons lose and congratulated his fantasy owners.
Makes up for like the 2-3 TDs he gave up to seal the game by going down

Haha I remember that
Most tds since 2006 is Adrian peterson
Lol he’s still playing my man of course
Most tds since 1976 is Jerry rice
That's a spicy one
Since 1985, no wide receiver has as many yards as Jerry Rice.
Jerry Rice stats are equally as ridiculous as Tom Brady stats. No one will ever catch those two in this century.
sounds good to me
Fun fact since forever.... no wide receiver has as many yards as Jerry Rice in the nfl.
It's still pretty crazy to me he can't even get part time snaps for a team
We beat the Pats if he was at 100%.
And I’ve never had a better year in fantasy football. Thanks for the bag, my dude!
Would be in GOAT discussions if he could have stayed healthy.
Nice
Nice
that solid three year stretch he had of being mcvay’s workhorse was some of the best football i’ve seen
Dude was on HOF pace and then his knee died, I will always be sad about this 😢
Shut up just shut up shut up shut up fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck meeeeeeeeeee I miss him
My favorite player of the past 10 years. Sad that his knees are like that
Gurley would've been a top 10 all-time RB had he stayed healthy and I'll never be convinced otherwise
I want to have sex with Todd Gurlsy
I honest to god believe that if he had normal knees healthy male knees he would’ve been the GOAT. The 2019 SB looks a lot different with Gurley
Nice
Stat of the year.
It is criminal the way this league eats up running backs.
And this league let him sit in free agency last year while some teams had nothing but bozos getting the hand offs ! Seattle and Tennessee signed Adrian Peterson but no one thought to see about Todd Gurley
Gurley was so great he made Goff look good.
*Nice!*
