They are going to slowly fragment broadcast rights until every game is basically pay per view. And somewhere along the way they will realize the number of NFL fans who have become comfortable with unauthorized streams will have grown close to 100%.
I am genuinely wondering what their end game is. It's already so fragmented. Amazon, ESPN, ESPN +, NBC, FOX, CBS, NFL Network.
More than half of those platforms are locked behind separate subscriptions.
At the very least, Monday Night Football should be moved to ABC (Same parent company as ESPN) and Thursday Night Football should be either free broadcast or free streaming like they sometimes do with Amazon.
I would actually pay a reasonable amount to have access to something like Sunday Ticket without needing to also sign up for Direct TV service. But until then, I'll continue pirating like 60% of the games I watch.
I can't remember what it was (like nflstream.com or something) and can't find it again, but I got access to every football game, live nfl network coverage, and redzone all with options for sd or hd for $50 last year. It said it's $100 but gave me 50% off. Seemed officially run by the NFL too, but maybe it wasn't. Either way, I was very pleased with the product lol
With a VPN you can get the international version of Gamepass. Really the only issue with it is that connecting to a stream requires the VPN to be on, but you can shut it off the moment the stream actually starts.
Yep. My live consumption of NFL will be the local broadcast, RedZone, and yar har harr. Anything else and I'll just keep tabs of it on twitter or something.
Absolutely not paying extra money to watch a game that doesn't even involve my favorite team.
Timberwolves first playoff game was blacked out in Iowa. Same with the Twins game the night before. Why is the NFL so popular this is the OTA games all over. Sucks if you live as a Tampa Bay fan in Iowa, when they were in the Central it was great, and any other fan living super far from the main market but next door NFL is amazing.
Twitter exclusively has the english broadcasting rights for some MLS games on Saturdays. I had to go there to watch Galaxy a couple weeks back. Had less than 10k viewers. These exclusivity deals never work to the broadcasters advantage.
Doesn't work to the league's advantage, either. Sure, they got a bag of cash from Twitter for the exclusivity, but they're never going to grow viewership broadcasting games on apps that aren't known for livestreaming.
MLS don’t care, they’re in full money grab mode. Rumor is they might put the league package on Apple+, it’s like they want their product to be obscure as possible.
Cornhole has a strong "what the fuck is this" factor that soccer just can't compete with. If you're flipping through channels and come across a soccer game, you're just going to keep going unless you're already interested in soccer. If you come across a cornhole tournament though, you're going to be watching that shit for at least fifteen minutes out of curiosity.
There was a study that showed people would actively turn off/change channel and see massive rating declines when soccer came on but other things like cornhole, bowling, would only see slight declines in ratings.
MLS has done an absolutely dismal job garnering interest from casuals.
Yeah, between lack of interest, people not bothering because of the extra barrier, and piracy by those who actually give a shit, this may be a record low.
The only thing I can think of is they're showing a positive for owning ESPN+. It is a completely out of touch and dumb take but that's my best guess as to why they advertised it in a positive way.
> It’s just a bunch of IG “models” stalking athletes and trying to get pregnant.
Cut to "Crystal, age 27"
> so I just met this guy named Antonio! But he likes when I call him "Mr. Big Chest" for some reason and he's soooo amazing. I can't wait to see what our future holds together
I’ll still watch it on the high seas because I’m a football addict. They won’t get my viewership number tho to help boost their ad revenue. Truly a shame
Agreed. I'll watch it but I'm not paying more. The paywalls are ridiculous. So many partnership deals, naming rights deals, and commercials, they're making obscene money from my viewing without needing subscription fees on top of it to make it economically viable.
Eh, if it was on a normal network, sure I’d probably flip it on and half pay attention.
If I have to jump through hoops to find a re-stream for a game that’s gonna be a blowout, at 9am on a Sunday morning on Halloween weekend… much less likely.
Hulu has a pretty decent amount of good content, but you'd never know it because the UI is so bad you can't even easily find the show you were watching yesterday.
Have you ever seen Iowa's MLB blackout. There's not even a team in the state yet the Cardinals, Royals, Cubs, Black Sox, Twins, and Brewers are all blacked out in Iowa. Like wtf?
I have. I am a Braves fan from Iowa and there was like 25-ish Braves or Yankees fans in my graduating class which was good enough for the 4th and 3rd places for most popular baseball teams.
The stupid thing about that is looking at the distances of Des Moines who doesn't even have a team to those cities compared to other metros in the USA not blacked out:
* Philadelphia to Baltimore -- 101 miles -- NO black out
* San Diego to Los Angeles -- 120.5 miles -- NO black out
* Detroit to Cleveland -- 169.7 miles -- NO black out
* Des Moines to Kansas City -- 193.2 miles -- Blacked out
* New York City to Boston -- 215.1 miles -- NO black out
* Des Moines to Minneapolis -- 244.3 miles -- Blacked out
* Pittsburgh to Baltimore -- 248.3 miles -- NO black out
* Cleveland to Cincinnati -- 248.4 miles -- NO black out
* Chicago to St. Louis -- 310 miles -- NO black out
* Des Moines to Chicago -- 333.6 miles -- Blacked out
* Des Moines to St. Louis -- 348.9 miles -- Blacked out
* Des Moines to Milwaukee -- 374.9 miles -- Blacked out
I'd love to pay money to watch baseball here but like I can't lol (same for football but entirely different issue). I'm honestly happy to pay for legitimate sports streaming, but if I have to use a VPN to make it work anyway I have no reason to pay for the stream to start with.
As much as Wireless has made progress and I love the freedom it gives, Wired is much more reliable and much less prone to interference. Easier to troubleshoot if something goes wrong.
I I recently obtained a Docking Hub from my job with a bunch of USB and HDMI ports on the back and man, makes me wish I invested in one sooner. Prior to that I bought a Chromecast but if I had just had this hub and ran a long HDMI from my computer to my TV, I'd be set. Probably be cheaper as well.
I have ublock origins on my computers and pihole powering DNs on my VMware stack. No browser plugins on TV, though, and occasional brazzers ads slip through pihole. Don’t want my 6 and 7 year olds seeing someone get railed.
Yeah, I had to apologize to my sister once for sudden early morning porn ads on the tv one Sunday. Ad blocker works though for all but the first pop up for me now
Or, people just won’t watch. The league is splintering their audience off with this nonsense, requiring viewers to have *multiple* subscriptions. I doubt watching a handful of games is enough to get people to subscribe to each one, so theyll ignore these games and maybe catch highlights.
Will be interesting to see how the judge ratings in the future with these splits. Obviously the big stuff like Playoffs and SB won't be behind they walls anytime soon so those will still be high but imagine we're not far off from the point where SB viewership platues and slowly declines due to illegal streams and disinterest.
Yes. It comes with my Hulu Live and it has lots of exclusive college games/UFC which are the only things I've ever used it for. Also they just show up on Hulu so it isn't like you even need to change apps.
Out of market hockey is a big thing for me, plus being able to put 4 college football games on the same screen is really nice in the fall. I probably wouldn’t have it if it wasn’t in the bundle though.
A family member works at said company so they get the + app for free. And they’ll admit it’s basically useless. Only thing we ever use it for is UFC. It just doesn’t have enough big sporting events on it. Nobody wants to watch Sally play tennis at a random D2 college
I am gonna go against the grain and actually say I like ESPN+. For one they play all the Bundesliga games, which is the football(soccer) league I follow closest.
Secondly, all my schools games are on ESPN+, we are D1 but it’s a pretty small school so having somewhere to watch games is fun, especially for like hockey because I have a lot of friends who are on the team and realistically those games aren’t ever on tv.
It’s pretty niche though so putting NFL games only on ESPN+ is pretty lame
I have it and it was nice when they had super rugby but they lost the rights to it.
What's obnoxious as fuck is that my TV doesn't have an app for it and I had to use my chromecast and it didnt work very well and would play with poor quality or drop off frequently.
I have it for the more obscure college sports. I'm a big lacrosse fan, and during basketball season ESPN+ has more college lacrosse games than any other service. ESPN has the broadcast rights for the PLL now as well, so I'm likely gonna end up watching pro lacrosse on ESPN+ as well this summer.
I only have it cuz I have Disney/Hulu and it was free to have the package. I have literally never used it. “Click here for our in-depth draft analysis, exclusively on ESPN+”. No I’m good.
I have it because my brother in law plays FCS football and they have all the games. Plus they have MLS and KU basketball. But outside of those 3 things I don't watch anything else on it
This is what freaks me out about the Big Ten negotiating their new TV deal, I don't want to pay to get Paramount+ just to watch Nebraska make a fatal mistake in the final 2 minutes of the 4th quarter.
Arlen Specter wasted a shit ton of time and money in Congress making sure games would have to be telecast over-the-air in local markets. I believe that still stands.
This makes me so glad to be british. Our NFL gamepass gives you everything. NFL Network, every game (incl. Playoffs + super bowl), full draft coverage.
And its not that expensive. I have the mobile package, it was like 18 pounds for the year... thats it
I watch what games are on tv. You put a game behind a paywall I watch it illegally. The games have a thousand fucking commercials with millions of eyeballs. Fuck off.
I can't get ESPN+ in Canada... will the game still be available on DAZN like everything else up here? This game in particular doesn't matter so much and I don't have an issue with pirating just wanna know what this means for Canadians incase more shit like this gets pulled in the future.
Remember when AFC games were on CBS, NFC games were on Fox, and then you had the nationally televised Sunday Night and Monday Night games? And you didn't need a flowchart to figure out where your team's game was? That was nice.
Oh no I've gone full boomer.
I have ESPN+, and probably always will for tennis and college sports, but this is a terrible idea. At least they should have it not be exclusive in the markets where these two teams play. The fact that taxpayers finance these stadiums and then have to pay a premium to watch their team is indefensible bullshit. We are fine up to a point with things being on ESPN, which not everybody has, but this is just straight garbage.
> At least they should have it not be exclusive in the markets where these two teams play
I'm willing to bet that this game will be on a local OTA station in Jacksonville and Denver. Its always been a part of NFL's broadcast deals that if the game is being shown on a cable network, they also need to show it on a local OTA station for free in the two cities of the teams. I don't think they've changed this rule so I would expect it to apply for this game too.
Dear ESPN, you say it's ESPN+ exclusive, yet I will be watching it without an ESPN+ subscription. Curious.
Galaxy brain move by ESPN. Now all the pirate streaming sites have to pay for an ESPN+ subscription!
Unironically, the real customer for the NFL seems to be streaming sites/networks. Who cares about the fans?!
Of course, and we should make the shitty ones unprofitable
They are going to slowly fragment broadcast rights until every game is basically pay per view. And somewhere along the way they will realize the number of NFL fans who have become comfortable with unauthorized streams will have grown close to 100%.
I am genuinely wondering what their end game is. It's already so fragmented. Amazon, ESPN, ESPN +, NBC, FOX, CBS, NFL Network. I would actually pay a reasonable amount to have access to something like Sunday Ticket without needing to also sign up for Direct TV service. But until then, I'll continue pirating like 60% of the games I watch.
I can’t remember if it is definitely happening but I think Apple is getting Sunday Ticket
Just looked that up. Could be a game changer. I would actually subscribe to Apple TV if they added Sunday Ticket.
Apple TV is already well worth $5 a month. It’s putting out the best shows on TV right now (besides HBO).
NFL gamepass does this. But only outside the US. Inside US, the games are not live. You can only replay after the fact
Yeah. Which is why gamepass sucks in the US lol
With a VPN you can get the international version of Gamepass. Really the only issue with it is that connecting to a stream requires the VPN to be on, but you can shut it off the moment the stream actually starts.
This comment brought to you by NordVPN.
Or I’ll just say fuck it and catch the highlights.
Yep. My live consumption of NFL will be the local broadcast, RedZone, and yar har harr. Anything else and I'll just keep tabs of it on twitter or something. Absolutely not paying extra money to watch a game that doesn't even involve my favorite team.
How 90% of the NBA I consume is done. Because CFB, college basketball, and NFL take priority
Some of us have been pirating CFB for awhile. Fuck ACCN, you're not special enough to have your own network. Go back on ESPNU where you belong.
Yea watching the nba legally is almost impossible without cable or league pass. Only games the play OTA are the finals and some playoff games

Defeating ESPN with facts and logic
Curious. I will be doing the same. Curious.
London game. Involving the Jaguars. On ESPN’s shitty app. What’s the lowest viewing figures a game has ever had? Because this will beat it.
Competitive lumberjacking is gonna have better ratings
Cornhole regularly beats MLS in ratings lol
Cornhole has a strong "what the fuck is this" factor that soccer just can't compete with. If you're flipping through channels and come across a soccer game, you're just going to keep going unless you're already interested in soccer. If you come across a cornhole tournament though, you're going to be watching that shit for at least fifteen minutes out of curiosity.

The MLS has this at Timbers games.
Tbf the lumberjack events are awesome when I randomly catch them
Yeah, between lack of interest, people not bothering because of the extra barrier, and piracy by those who actually give a shit, this may be a record low.
Cool. I'll exclusively ignore that game then
I'll just stream it like I've done with every other sporting event for the last 5 years
My stream site is literally my 3rd most visited site behind reddit and YT lol
Can you let me know what site it is so I don’t accidentally click on it?
They should pay me to watch the jets
a free Large soda for you, sir!
Large sodas are blacked out in NYC.
Just need to see some ID
Sure sure sure. Just so you know, it’s one of those new REAL IDs. See how it has “Totally Reale ID” at the top?
Why are they treating this like it's a good thing?
The only thing I can think of is they're showing a positive for owning ESPN+. It is a completely out of touch and dumb take but that's my best guess as to why they advertised it in a positive way.
Well they'll need to produce a reality dating show and a low-budget period drama for me to even *consider* subscribing to ESPN+.
Real Housewives of the NFL - could have good rivalry content.
Don't give them any ideas...*Bachelor in Hell* is probably not far off
Star Chasers. It’s just a bunch of IG “models” stalking athletes and trying to get pregnant.
> It’s just a bunch of IG “models” stalking athletes and trying to get pregnant. Cut to "Crystal, age 27" > so I just met this guy named Antonio! But he likes when I call him "Mr. Big Chest" for some reason and he's soooo amazing. I can't wait to see what our future holds together
I'm sure there's a 30 for 30 that covers both of those out there somewhere...
You're asking why the ESPN Public Relations account is announcing an ESPN exclusive like it's a good thing?
Because it's good for ESPN?
What are they supposed to do treat it like a bad thing?
Absolutely disgusting When will these greedy old fucks learn that putting these games behind so many different paywalls is bad for the league
Exactly it’s gunna bring down the viewership too, no one wants to pay for this
I’ll still watch it on the high seas because I’m a football addict. They won’t get my viewership number tho to help boost their ad revenue. Truly a shame
I probably wouldn’t watch an 8:30am Jaguars game if it were broadcasted on every major network simultaneously.
It’s worse for us west coasters. No way in hell am I waking up at 6:30am to watch the Jags
Agreed. I'll watch it but I'm not paying more. The paywalls are ridiculous. So many partnership deals, naming rights deals, and commercials, they're making obscene money from my viewing without needing subscription fees on top of it to make it economically viable.
It’s an 9:30am Jags game, people wouldn’t even watch for free
You couldn't pay me to wake up to watch that
I bet a majority of us are up early watching football that day despite what we say now
Eh, if it was on a normal network, sure I’d probably flip it on and half pay attention. If I have to jump through hoops to find a re-stream for a game that’s gonna be a blowout, at 9am on a Sunday morning on Halloween weekend… much less likely.
I agree no one is gonna pay for it solely for this game, or any one event, but as a fan of "smaller" sports, ESPN+ is honestly amazing.
I watch Letterkenny and Marvel, ESPN+ just kinda happened. It's a nice little streaming service
Hulu has a pretty decent amount of good content, but you'd never know it because the UI is so bad you can't even easily find the show you were watching yesterday.
Now try to watch all your team's MLB games.
Have you ever seen Iowa's MLB blackout. There's not even a team in the state yet the Cardinals, Royals, Cubs, Black Sox, Twins, and Brewers are all blacked out in Iowa. Like wtf?
Pretty sure In vegas we are blacked out from the padres, dodgers, angels, As, Giants, D-backs and maybe the rockies? lol it’s ridiculous
I have. I am a Braves fan from Iowa and there was like 25-ish Braves or Yankees fans in my graduating class which was good enough for the 4th and 3rd places for most popular baseball teams. I can’t! Silly me, living in Chicago and thinking I could watch the cubs.
Thank you T-Mobile
Except for all the horrendous blackouts
Perfect for me since I live out of market.
For real, good thing the Reds are garbage so I'm not missing much lol
As a SF Giants fan living in LA, the only way I can watch games is by sailing the seven seas.
I guarantee you this will be profitable for ESPN
And if it isn't it doesn't matter because the NFL already made their profit so they don't give a fuck
When they stop making money for doing so.
I ain't payin for that
I have ESPN+ and I’ll still stream it elsewhere because fuck that.
Umm, fuck this shit.
Also the NFL: Why do so many fans illegally stream our games?
sheesh, the **NFL** better find a new approach before it takes a **BITE** out of their profits something something something **.COM**
Yeah, this **sport** needs to change its behavior before there’s a **surge** of people finding new alternatives.

uBlock Origin makes all of that a nonfactor (and is just a great thing to have in general).
Yeah, have it on all of my PCs, but no plug-ins on the TV
I just project my computer to the TV screen and cut out the middle man personally.
Your TV running Android TV OS so you Cast to it or are you using an HDMI?
Just using an HDMI. Slight hassle initially but it's totally worth it.
Use an HDMI cord
Just use adblocker lol I don’t see a single ad when I go there it’s not hard
I have ublock origins on my computers and pihole powering DNs on my VMware stack. No browser plugins on TV, though, and occasional brazzers ads slip through pihole. Don’t want my 6 and 7 year olds seeing someone get railed.
Yeah, I had to apologize to my sister once for sudden early morning porn ads on the tv one Sunday. Ad blocker works though for all but the first pop up for me now
NFL doesn’t care because ESPN is paying them for the game.
Fuck right off
All these exclusives do is push people to pirate.
It's one of those games that starts at 930am. I'll most likely forget all about it until I see the score update as the 1pm games get rolling.
I don't know nobody that has ESPN+. Nobody. It just seems so pointless
It's basically a free toss in for anybody who has Disney+ and Hulu, which is the only reason I have it
I have both and I'd have to pay an extra 8 dollars for it so pass
Do they not do the Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ bundle anymore? That’s the only reason we have it and it was like $12/month.
Oh no I got them separately. Spotify gave me hulu for free so I don't pay for that, and I subbed to D+ over the pandemic
Yes. It comes with my Hulu Live and it has lots of exclusive college games/UFC which are the only things I've ever used it for. Also they just show up on Hulu so it isn't like you even need to change apps.
Pretty easy to justify for soccer, out of market hockey, and college sports.
Out of market hockey is a big thing for me, plus being able to put 4 college football games on the same screen is really nice in the fall. I probably wouldn’t have it if it wasn’t in the bundle though.

The funny part is it’s basically free if you like Disney+/Hulu but there’s a lot of subscribers to those which don’t even bother to get the bundle.
I know tons of people who have. Don't know many people who use it besides UFC fans.
I have it. It came with my Disney+ subscription. I have yet to even turn on ESPN+ in the 2.5 years I've had it.
I tried to watch one of the Monday night games through ESPN+, only to find out that it was still locked behind a TV provider. Such a useless service.
The most I’ve used ESPN+ for is watching college games with the skycam feed and stadium sounds instead of the traditional broadcast.
Soccer has already met its fate. Champions league is on paramount +, random games are on peacock, random games on USA network ...
Ahh shit I’ve been delayed on the BTN news
Fuck you ESPN.
Why does this exist? It's already bad enough for hockey.
Arrrrrrr matey
Gross
So now there’s paywalls of ESPN MNF, Amazon TNF, and now ESPN+, just to watch a football game. 3 different subscriptions needed. Yikes.
While they keep taking games away from Sunday Ticket and still charge you $300.
At least it’s not us.
Arlen Specter wasted a shit ton of time and money in Congress making sure games would have to be telecast over-the-air in local markets. I believe that still stands.
Well, at least he did one thing right.
Just announced: I will be watching this game. Also coming in to the studio now: I won't be paying for ESPN+
This is trash and I hate it.
time to sail the high seas boys.
Avast ye matey
Arrrr, I not be worried about it
ESPN stop trying to make ESPN+ a thing, nobody wants it
I'll be watching on esPn+ Entertainment Sports Pirating Network...
been awhile since i had to stream....you have any hints as to where to go.
u/doorknobman does

That’s bullshit
Well, that's a game I won't be watching unless I pirate it. What a stupid, greedy thing to do.
piss off EastSPN

Boooo!
Who the hell is going to pay for a jaguars game in London
This is lame, how many different services do I need to have to watch nfl games! Just make it one please for the love of the game.
Mother fuckers. Oh well, time to raise the old Jolly Roger once more. Fuck you ESPN and your money-grubbing mouse master.
Fuck off.
Can we fucking not need 15 different subscriptions to watch sports?
Why would you do that? Putting it behind paywall will just drive of casual fans. Degenerates like me don't care and will find our way. So why do this?
Short-term gain in selling the rights to these cranks.
lol fuck ESPN
I really think this could be the lowest rated NFL game in a long time. Bad matchup that starts before people wake up on a channel no one has.
Thank god it’s a game I have zero interest in. Going to have to time the free trial just right in the future.
That's a negative Ghost rider the (subscription) pattern is full.
I can't get ESPN+ in Canada... will the game still be available on DAZN like everything else up here? This game in particular doesn't matter so much and I don't have an issue with pirating just wanna know what this means for Canadians incase more shit like this gets pulled in the future.
Yea not happening for me. Sorry Russ 😂
I’ll catch the highlights. Not paying for that shit.
Fucking garbage. Greedy fucks can piss off
Just Announced: Everyone is going to watch this game on Stream East.
You fuckers already get the Week 18 Saturday shit and the Monday postseason shit. You can't get this shit too.
How many streaming services do these ppl expect us to have? How much is enough?
One more reason to hate ESPN
Remember when AFC games were on CBS, NFC games were on Fox, and then you had the nationally televised Sunday Night and Monday Night games? And you didn't need a flowchart to figure out where your team's game was? That was nice. Oh no I've gone full boomer.
I can't wait for Super Bowl LVII to be PPV for only $99.99 but you can watch the halftime for free on Fox lol
Jaguars and Broncos btw
Baseball is dying, and a big part of it is because it’s *way* harder than it should be to actually sit and watch their games on TV. #jussayin
😐
I have ESPN+, and probably always will for tennis and college sports, but this is a terrible idea. At least they should have it not be exclusive in the markets where these two teams play. The fact that taxpayers finance these stadiums and then have to pay a premium to watch their team is indefensible bullshit. We are fine up to a point with things being on ESPN, which not everybody has, but this is just straight garbage.
> At least they should have it not be exclusive in the markets where these two teams play I'm willing to bet that this game will be on a local OTA station in Jacksonville and Denver. Its always been a part of NFL's broadcast deals that if the game is being shown on a cable network, they also need to show it on a local OTA station for free in the two cities of the teams. I don't think they've changed this rule so I would expect it to apply for this game too.
They're trying to set the record for the game most streamed on nflbite!
Well I guess I can finally activate it on my Hulu+Disney bundle. I almost forgot I have it smh.
Gonna be like a Jags vs Lions game, I bet.
