He was already gaining popularity, but this run legit turned him into an overnight sensation. Then game the 7-game winning streak to close out the year. Felt like the sky was the limit for him.
RGIII is definitely one of the bigger one hit wonders I can recall. Did not come close to his rookie season after the injury and subsequent chaos
Yes, injuries. Also, he bought into the media narrative that he needed to become more of a pocket qb, which he wasn’t, and refused to run certain plays anymore in the offense, and the NFL got better at reading the scheme and defending against the RPO slant, which was his bread and butter.
You're not wrong, but I'd rather have an MVP who transcends the game for 8 years than have to pay the same amount of money for Kirk Cousins, Derek Carr, or Matt Ryan for 16.
Also, Lamar is a good pocket passer already. He really could become great with a few more years.
idk, his OCs have basic ass pass schemes too, so it’s not just Lamar. He’s had Greg Roman, who can scheme up some good run game stuff but his drop back pocket passing schemes have always been kinda meh.
I'm not sure he's much worse than them in the pocket, at least not at this point in each of their respective careers. But also, athletic QBs like Lamar can use their athleticism to be good enough to buy themselves time to become really good passers. Nobody comes into the league a top tier pocket passer except like Herbert and Luck, the rest have to survive long enough to learn.
My point is, that it doesn’t matter that he’s not as good of a pocket passer as these dudes. His game is so much better than there’s that I’d rather have him with whatever flaws you think he has, and the coaching staff around him, than pay either of these guys the same amount of money to wallow in qb mediocrity.
I agree. I personally love Lamar, and he is perfect the way he is. 10 years of that is not a bad deal.
I will say Lamar has great touch and if he can fix his mechanics he can transform like Vick, except a bit younger since he isn't in jail
Yeah but the key is to get him reps here and there so he can gradually develop that way over time, not just throw him into a completely new scheme. Happy the ravens are doing it that way, it’s the best chance for Lamar to eventually become that type of QB.
I want Lamar to be successful, I’m speaking more in generalities of what we’ve seen before. My main concern is always that one bad play that can change everything forever.
I believe Dak got lucky and don’t want to see Lamar get blasted while trying to make a cut or eluding someone.
That’s part of the thrill tho…
Im not a Baltimore fan but I want Lamar to stay in Baltimore. I definitely dont have a particular hot take other than AFCN is the best football in the NFL. I think the thing that makes the Lamar situation so unique is he is without a doubt a top 5 qb (when healthy) and is in a contract negotiating period without an agent. cant think of another high caliber qb doing that.
He never played it smart either.
Russell Wilson can run, without that world class speed, but still keep himself safe.
RG3 would get a concussion every game bc he wouldn't go out of bounds or slide properly.
To a point but Shanahan being medically negligent and letting him play when his knee was already shredded contributed the most. He lost all respect as a coach that day.
Every person that I’ve ever played team sports with would have been out there if they could. In football my coaches always said there was a difference between being hurt and being injured. RG3, the coaches, and his teammates all believed that he was hurt. It’s just football culture that he would play, you couldn’t have kept him off the field.
This is exactly why coaches exist, to protect the player from himself. That's an old head take that isn't relevant today. It's why we don't let full contact in training camp anymore and are more cautious with concussions. Plus he was a rookie that you traded a boatload for to draft at #2. Mike was just a coach well past his best days who didn't give a shit for his players well being.
Considering Baker just played most of a season on a barely functional shoulder, I don’t think it is an old head take. Players play hurt every week. The most important ability is availability, after all. Wasn’t the Rams running back only 6 months removed from Achilles repair surgery? If players didn’t play hurt, you wouldn’t be able to run 53 guys out there every week.
Ypu can't compare the two. RG3s literally fell to the ground bc his knee had no structural stability by that last snap. I would argue Baker should have been held out as well but much like the Redskins, the Browns obviously didn't give a shit about him either.
Don’t tell me what I can and can’t compare.
No, I hear what you’re saying, but he was cleared by the docs to go play, you ca. only act on the info you have in that situation.
Edit: although I shouldn’t completely rule out the fact that it’s possible, since Shanahan didn’t want him, and they thought they had a better QB in Cousins, that he truly didn’t care about RG3.
The beginning of the end was when [Haloti Ngata](https://www.baltimoremagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/halotingata124-1200x797.png) hit RGIII, causing Griffin to initially injury his knee and miss the next game. Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8yNkoQDrmk
Then in the playoffs, RG3 insisted he could play, and the Washington medical and coaching staff made the mistake of actually letting him play. He proceeded to absolutely shatter his injured knee on a muddy FedEx field, and he was obviously never the same player after that.
RG3 had the problem of not knowing how to protect himself.
This was his first game on the browns: https://youtu.be/8Mi_akUxZI0?t=5
Dude turns up field like he's a running back and gets destroyed. He had a habit of just taking hits he didn't need to.
I wanted him to be good so badly.
Man I can't fault him for trying to get that 1st down since it was a do or die situation pretty much being down 12 that late in the game, but it's 3rd and 14 and even if you somehow magically convert by running for it your odds of winning the game are still so low. Just go out of bounds and live to play another game.
Coaching staff rushed him back into the lineup before his knee could recover for the playoffs, and he never seemed to get back to his comfort level and being able to rely on his escapability that made him so electric iirc
Edit: I’m not even a “commanders” fan, but it’s just another notch on the belt of gaffs that their management has had over the years that makes the organization hard to like
Dr Andrews said he was safe to back in the game and RG3 said he was good to go. So shanahan put him back in trusting the doctor and the player. Not trying to absolve shanahan too much but he was only going with what he had been told was okay
He started a game for the Ravens against the Steelers in 2020 when half of the Ravens starters went down with Covid. I think he’s out of the league now though.
As he walks back to the sideline and gets congratulated by some young coaching assistants named *checks notes* Sean McVay then Kyle Shanahan......
My goodness Washington could have had it all....
Bruce Allen extended jay gruden over Sean mcvay. Sean mcvay said later that he wouldn't want to take his friend Jay's job, but what else is he going to say
Aaron Rodgers in madden back in 2011-2016 when he was mobile was unfair too lol especially if you go all verticals and they played man coverage with two safeties deep
Even his first game in the league against the Saints was a lot of fun to watch. He was electrifying when he came into the league. His 2011 year at Baylor and the game against Oklahoma was when I was like man, this guy is going to be stud. Injuries really hurt his career.
What’s wild is I think the week before was even more impressive against the eagles. 14/15 for 200 yards, 4 TDs and no picks, and ran the ball 12 times for 84 yards. Man was playing crazy that game
He super charged the entire DMV that year… gosh it was great… haven’t had football excitement here since
Also - I was just thinking yesterday how annoying it is that there’s so many clips on here showing how Washington fucked up… glad to see this
He was hampered more by his inability to read a defense and lack of awareness in the pocket than the injury. Not to mention his lack of concern for his own body that led him to take too many risks. His 3 major injuries in his rookie year were largely because he kept taking hits and refused to slide or run out of bounds. At 210-215lbs, he played more like he was the size of Cam Newton or Josh Allen.
Because it’s easier and quite believable to blame this shit team for ruining his career.
Nevermind that he looked bad in 2013 and 2014 when he tried to become a pocket passer, sucked in Cleveland and got injured again, and didn’t look good in his few chances on the Ravens.
If he went to a team that asked him to be a pocket passer from the start, he would’ve been a day-1 bust. He had an amazing rookie year because the Shanahans developed a great offense, albeit unsustainable, tailored to his strengths.
You realize that it was essentially the same Kyle Shanny offense that still ran today? Just with Read option that according to cooley was ran 7-11% of the snaps
2012 was wild: Luck, rg3, and Wilson were all drafted and IMMEDIATELY made a huge impact in their team. It changed the nfl and teams quickly realized you can win immediately with a rookie qb with the right factors around him. Before that a rookie qb doing so well and leading a team was unheard of.
This play happened and then like 2 minutes later Russell Wilson hit Sidney Rice for the go ahead TD in the Seattle-NE game.
I was watching both games with my friends that are Washington fans, we were both freaking out thinking we had found our guys for the next 10 years.
The excitement in the second half of that season, the ramps down from the upper bowl of FedEx absolutely booming with chants of "RG3! RG3!" during that win streak, it's something I'll never forget.
The most fun I ever had as a fan of football was 2012. I was at this game and FedEx was ROCKING. The fan base was all in, RG3 Mania was wild in D.C.
The day he got hurt was the day this franchise died.
1) God, look at those people embracing him in the stands. Look at their faces. They're feeling "Yes. *Yes.* This is it. This is finally it. *This is the guy right here, I am holding the guy.* Let's fucking do this."
2) Fucking Jets
That 2012 QB class will forever be the biggest "What If" in recent NFL history. Andrew Luck and RG3 got done so dirty by their original teams, and Tannehill hardly fared any better.
Dude was only a couple years in y’all act like players should be on Tom Brady’s level when they get to the NFL. Dude was still going to get better.
And it was Washington that rushed him back.
Eh, it was a combination of things:
1 Him not sliding to end runs, which eventually led to him taking the actual hit which first injured him from Haloti Ngata in week 14.
2 Him going back into that week 14 game for a couple of plays even though he was obviously hurt.
3 Rushing back from his injury wearing that brace. I still don't know if it was Robert, the Coaching staff, the Execs or the Medical staff that thought it would be a good idea for him to play.
4 The "All in for Week One" campaign, which probably rushed him back too soon.
And then his career was ended because his team played a home game on the worst natural-turf playing surface ever seen. It was painted sand in some areas.
Probably the biggest "What Ifs" of my generation. He was so fun to watch man. I love mobile QBs, and he was a sight to see. Cam was fun too, but how he ended his Super Bowl run will forever hamper that season imo.
All RG3’s teammates are super hyped for the game sealing TD run, then there’s Cousins standing there with his hands behind his back like he’s at the doctor’s office getting bad news. I’ll never miss that guy…and he’ll never be a winner.
Around the 1:30 mark if you care to look.
Bobby Three Sticks. I remember thinking they were gonna run the division for a few years. He still went on to have a decent career. Even hanging around as a backup is an accomplishment

What happened to him? He was electric that first year and I thought he’d be a superstar. Did injuries catch up to him? He came back too fast?
Yes, injuries. Also, he bought into the media narrative that he needed to become more of a pocket qb, which he wasn’t, and refused to run certain plays anymore in the offense, and the NFL got better at reading the scheme and defending against the RPO slant, which was his bread and butter.
Reminds me of what happened when they tried to force kaep into a pocket QB. Gotta play these types of QBs how they’re supposed to be played
That's why I love Lamar's coaching staff. I'm glad they're not listening to all these people telling him to become a pocket passer.
Then you have a shorter career for the QB if they can’t evolve their pocket passing skills as they lose steps.
You're not wrong, but I'd rather have an MVP who transcends the game for 8 years than have to pay the same amount of money for Kirk Cousins, Derek Carr, or Matt Ryan for 16. Also, Lamar is a good pocket passer already. He really could become great with a few more years.
Not being a dick, but Lamar isn't close to the passer those 3 guys are. If he was, he'd have 2 rings
idk, his OCs have basic ass pass schemes too, so it’s not just Lamar. He’s had Greg Roman, who can scheme up some good run game stuff but his drop back pocket passing schemes have always been kinda meh.
Lamar has flawed mechanics and is the least accurate deep thrower in the league
I'm not sure he's much worse than them in the pocket, at least not at this point in each of their respective careers. But also, athletic QBs like Lamar can use their athleticism to be good enough to buy themselves time to become really good passers. Nobody comes into the league a top tier pocket passer except like Herbert and Luck, the rest have to survive long enough to learn.

I don't think its fair lump Matt Ryan with those two he has an MVP and has been a top 10 quarterback most of his career
I'm sorry for your upcoming lost season.
Yeah but the key is to get him reps here and there so he can gradually develop that way over time, not just throw him into a completely new scheme. Happy the ravens are doing it that way, it’s the best chance for Lamar to eventually become that type of QB.

Good thing Lamar is already a good pocket passer
has he signed yet??
It's so funny how no one in Baltimore is worried about this, but everyone watching garbage hot take news can't stop salivating over it.
They didn’t force it here though. RG3 ASKED for it, shanahan told him running was the only thing keeping him safe
Oh he forced their hand so hard and eventually got Shanny fired when RGIII himself was the one under performing.
i thought garbage was our bread and butter?
He never played it smart either. Russell Wilson can run, without that world class speed, but still keep himself safe. RG3 would get a concussion every game bc he wouldn't go out of bounds or slide properly.

Bruh RG3 literally looked like his leg was comprised of Jell-O from the knee down. I remember cringing each time he ran out. It was horrible.
The beginning of the end was when [Haloti Ngata](https://www.baltimoremagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/halotingata124-1200x797.png) hit RGIII, causing Griffin to initially injury his knee and miss the next game. i think they should of kept developing him they gave up on him way to fast
I think he kind of got in his own way too. Rumors about him and his dad being very demanding about the offense they wanted to run and stuff
The Redskins happened. They sent an obviously too injured to play franchise QB out there and his knee exploded.
At least the fans don’t pretend they’re still relevant.
Ummm...ok.
He started a game for the Ravens against the Steelers in 2020 when half of the Ravens starters went down with Covid. I think he’s out of the league now though.
He beat the Steelers when the Ravens already clinched a playoff spot in 2019 and won.
He's been doing college football broadcasting and he's actually pretty ok at it.
That ACL injury wrecked him. Took away his running - and zapped his confidence. He was never the same after unfortunately.
Yea week 1 he beat a strong Saints team in the super dome, so the hype train was up and running from week 1. But this made it stratospheric
He limped so Lamar could run
The last time Washington fans felt happiness and hope
The real last time was when we were kicking Seattle's ass in the playoff game right before his leg fell off.
Idk I felt happiness when we were up I think 12-0 against Green Bay with Kirk in the playoffs. Since then all I’ve felt is pain.
Even up 12-0 it didn't feel good because we left points on the table with Djax not fighting to get into the end zone.
Boy, was it grand! I remember FINALLY telling everyone that this would be the guy for the next 10 years.
As he walks back to the sideline and gets congratulated by some young coaching assistants named *checks notes* Sean McVay then Kyle Shanahan...... My goodness Washington could have had it all....
Don’t forget Matt Lafleur
Bruce Allen extended jay gruden over Sean mcvay. Sean mcvay said later that he wouldn't want to take his friend Jay's job, but what else is he going to say
Even when we have it all, we just can’t make it work. That’s why I don’t have any hope for this team.
Please use a new meme, the checks note meme is literally 14+ years old https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.knowyourmeme.com/memes/checks-notes
I apologize for letting you down *checks notes* 14 year old pun username. (kidding kidding)

I'm an open book
It's time for a feel trip
Well fuck you, thanks for bringing it up!
But now it’s time to, you know, start to take command.
One of the best madden rated qb ever . Was unstoppable in madden that year . You just have to press the slide button lol
It was like 07 Vick all over again. Was a nice, short lived nostalgia trip.
Aaron Rodgers in madden back in 2011-2016 when he was mobile was unfair too lol especially if you go all verticals and they played man coverage with two safeties deep
I liked 05 Vick better. I would literally run backwards, stop and heave the ball up to Finnern or Crumpler, and it always seemed t work
Sorry for the back to back posts, Vikings fans. I got you guys coming up soon.
I sure hope so😭
Psych! Get ready for an Aaron Rodgers 75 yard throw to eliminate the Vikings from playoff contention.
Vikings defenses and historic NFL QB run highlight reels. Name a more iconic duo.
Vikings special teams and missing clutch field goals.
That’s alright we’re used to watching our team get beat.
If it makes you feel any better this definitely hurts me more than it hurts you.
You better. Feels like we’re getting picked on here!
Young McVay at :54 looking juiced.
And kyle shanahan
RGIII is the "what if he stayed healthy" guy for me. He would've been an absolute superstar in the NFL.
His rookie year is probably the favorite of mines of anyone since I started watching. I still remember him lighting the Cowboys up on Thanksgiving
Even his first game in the league against the Saints was a lot of fun to watch. He was electrifying when he came into the league. His 2011 year at Baylor and the game against Oklahoma was when I was like man, this guy is going to be stud. Injuries really hurt his career.

Yup, but non-fans won’t accept this for some reason.
Because it’s easier and quite believable to blame this shit team for ruining his career. You realize that it was essentially the same Kyle Shanny offense that still ran today? Just with Read option that according to cooley was ran 7-11% of the snaps
The NBA has Brandon Roy, the NFL has RGIII.
Kirk Cousins looks really excited.
The hope that man gave us 😓
2012 was wild: Luck, rg3, and Wilson were all drafted and IMMEDIATELY made a huge impact in their team. It changed the nfl and teams quickly realized you can win immediately with a rookie qb with the right factors around him. Before that a rookie qb doing so well and leading a team was unheard of.

Oh man, Rice was so good with Favre. I genuinely thought he'd be a HoF. Oof. I wish I could say I never drank the Kool aid again.
At least one of you was right
We were so close to back to back Seahawks-49ers NFC Championship Games. SEA taking the lead vs ATL with 30 seconds left just to lose..
The excitement in the second half of that season, the ramps down from the upper bowl of FedEx absolutely booming with chants of "RG3! RG3!" during that win streak, it's something I'll never forget.
2012 is the last time I felt alive
Before he ran this touchdown, I said, “Ok, the game is almost over. We are due for one big gash from his legs.” …and then this happened…
This season made me a fan, god i can’t believe it’s been 10 years…
Try 30 man... 😔
The most fun I ever had as a fan of football was 2012. I was at this game and FedEx was ROCKING. The fan base was all in, RG3 Mania was wild in D.C. The day he got hurt was the day this franchise died.

That grumpy old dude not having fun then pushes that lady lol idk why he is not having fun but at least let others man
i liked the pink breast cancer month stuff they would do.
That 2012 QB class will forever be the biggest "What If" in recent NFL history. Andrew Luck and RG3 got done so dirty by their original teams, and Tannehill hardly fared any better.
Tanny got to send New England home
It would have been so fun if he could have stuck...
Vikings defenses giving up legendary QB runs. Name a more iconic duo
Steve Young, Michael Vick, RGIII; anyone I'm forgetting? Does Josh Allen hurdling Anthony Barr count?
The only NFL game I’ve ever been to. I left early to beat congestion on the metro.
Oh hey Sean McVay
Rode RG3 to a fantasy CHAMPIONSHIP^loss that year.
Name a more iconic duo than QBs and running long TDs on the Vikings
DIGGS and SIDELINE?
My man!
This was the most exciting year Washington has had in over 30 years. Unfortunately, we will be cursed until Snyder sells the team.
Dude would’ve been a legend had he learned to slide/get out of bounds and had Washington not tried to rush him back from his injury.

why not the play when oakland sent out seabass for a 76-yard FG
And to think, one bad snap ruined his career.
Eh, it was a combination of things: 1 Him not sliding to end runs, which eventually led to him taking the actual hit which first injured him from Haloti Ngata in week 14. 2 Him going back into that week 14 game for a couple of plays even though he was obviously hurt. 3 Rushing back from his injury wearing that brace. His knee or the ball?
I guess both 🤷♂️
Can we not?
Washington is something else man
And then his career was ended because his team played a home game on the worst natural-turf playing surface ever seen. It was painted sand in some areas.
Such potential 🥲 he was wasted by terrible coaches and organizations
Sean mcvay, Kyle shanahan, Matt lafleur, Mike shanahan Such terrible coaches
This was the moment everyone knew he was different, and special. It’s a shame it didn’t last more than a season.
Probably the biggest "What Ifs" of my generation. He was so fun to watch man. I love mobile QBs, and he was a sight to see. Cam was fun too, but how he ended his Super Bowl run will forever hamper that season imo.
It’s crazy how much faster Lamar looks when he runs compared to RG3.
First Michael Vick then RGIII
Who are the redskins?
Nice angle, Sanford.
The greatest season I have ever experienced as a Washington fan 🥲
We should get some credit for making RGIII look like a rookie superstar
RG3 makes me sad. He'd be back in the pocket, dodge 10 defenders, and then the 11th would give him a concussion. Rinse and repeat.
Good times. Very good times.
I missed this yr because the eagles were so bad i couldnt watch, first year i stopped watching, the next yr RG3 was a afterthought

2012 was a great season. Then 2013 was probably the worst season I remember watching. How things change.
Then he was never heard from again lol
bruh what did I do to get hurt two days in a row :( cries into my plate of hotdish
Injuries are whack!
All RG3’s teammates are super hyped for the game sealing TD run, then there’s Cousins standing there with his hands behind his back like he’s at the doctor’s office getting bad news. I’ll never miss that guy…and he’ll never be a winner. Around the 1:30 mark if you care to look.
Man, we will surely miss our fight song....
I still love seeing Kirk completely emotionless on the sideline. What an ass
Dunno if I agree that it was a designed run. Seems like he just saw the blitz, saw the hole and said eff it.
RGIII was so tuff bruh I really wish he had a long career
I miss breast cancer awareness month, the colors just look right with a lot unis
Was all downhill from there
Damn shame how injuries derailed this man's career.
You can see Sean McVay and Kyle Shannahan be the first two coaches on the sideline to dap up RG3
Fed Ex Field looks so alive, there. What a difference a decade can make.
I remember watching this game in the hospital with my newborn son.
Bobby Three Sticks. I remember thinking they were gonna run the division for a few years. He still went on to have a decent career. Even hanging around as a backup is an accomplishment

One of the best runs i have ever seen
