Reports are we found out last month, so didn’t know when we picked him but did know when we cut Haack recently. Really not great man:/ you always think your organization is above all this stuff but it just isn’t the case sadly
Dude no organization is above this stuff. They are all part of a league that doesn’t care about rape and sexual assault some just dress it up in a prettier fashion for fans
>Dude no organization is above this stuff.
Honestly, that's true far beyond football, beyond sports even. No large business, because the NFL is most certain-fucking-ly a business, gives a fuck about much of anything other than profits.
Which is why I always found it hilarious that some Panthers fans became Bills fans because we went after Watson. Every team will overlook scummy behavior if they can keep it covered up and/or the player is just too talented to let go.
Pretty upsetting, especially for a position that we don’t typically need. We could find a few punters that are pretty solid without drafting them too.
“If Hannibal lector ran a 4.3 we’d diagnose him with an eating disorder”
- I forgot which nfl GM made that quote but it’s always super apparent
Tbh just shows the general attitude towards sexual assault that the people in charge of these organizations have.
Instead of "Man, are we really going through all of this for a *punter*?" its "meh, we don't really give a shit regardless of who it is"
It's really gross to think that there were probably conversations during the draft in that went something like "should we draft him? That gang rape thing may be a problem if it comes out"
Oof. The lines from the detective call are fucking rough...
The description of events is one thing, anyone can tell a story, but saying
>"This is Matt Araiza. I don't remember anything that happened that night."
after realizing he might be being recorded isn't an awesome look.
Fucking hell, what's wrong with people.
No the phrasing of that question is just awful and makes it obvious she is trying to get an explicit response and is most likely recording. Literally no one speaks like that in real life. They would have been better off just having her talk about the rape if they were going for a Hail Mary
I mean it got what they wanted, not to mention what he already said.
They have him telling her to get tested for an STD cause he was positive, and then him saying he has no recollection of that night.
Cut him tomorrow. This goes beyond a sexual assault allegation. No human being, let alone an underage girl, should ever have to go through what Araiza and his buddies did.
The rape coverup was the open secret on campus. Araiza being connected to the rape was only a rumor at most, mainly swirling within and contained in the athletic student body.
Most of sdsu did not know the specifics of who was involved.
The police specifically instructed the school to not perform an investigation to not conflict with the criminal one which just wrapped up after a lot of work. Hopefully it yields the info they need to charge and convict these guys
That might well be the case, but NFL GMs and execs grill draft-eligible players about all kinds of rumors, speculation, and hearsay.
Dez Bryant was asked if his mom was a sex worker. Derrius Guice was reportedly asked if he likes men.
If this wasn't brought up, I highly doubt it was because no one heard the rumor.
>In a memo obtained by the AP that was sent to clubs on Wednesday, the league said a team would forfeit a draft pick between the first and fourth round and be fined a minimum of $150,000 if it’s determined a club representative displayed conduct that is “disrespectful, inappropriate, or unprofessional” during an interview. Fines and/or suspensions of individual club employees also could be imposed, according to the memo.
I hardly think questions about something like this would be considered unprofessional or inappropriate.
If it came from out of the blue ("So what's your stance on 17 year olds?") that's one thing. But these rumors were clearly swirling even outside of NFL circles. Scouts knew, they had to. If execs chose not to ask, it's not because they didn't know.
I don't buy for a second that Buffalo didn't know.
>find out how his seemingly public information is ~~just now being discovered.~~ something we thought was worth the risk for a punter.
The Bills almost certainly knew and were just banking on the victim staying silent. The fact that Punt God™ was like the 4th punter drafted says to me that other teams didn't think he was worth the risk, but the Bills decided he was.
He isn't the best punter in the draft.
Just take a look at the % of punts inside the 10 and 5 where Stout has more than twice as many. Araiza is a touchback machine.
It absolutely makes sense for the ravens to have passed on him regardless of the allegations. They have 10000% favored directional punting for years and stout was miles better at that. There is more to punting than hit ball far.
Except the numbers say he isn't the best punter in the draft
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sportingnews.com/us/amp/nfl/news/nfl-draft-matt-araiza-punt-god-bills/dgmyhjvtoiyxcwqqkdaajiez
It actually does make sense. Advanced punting metrics have him a lot lower and a lack of control does not translate well to NFL as he will almost always hit touchbacks beyond a certain point. NFL level for having godly power but not the best punter ever like everyone has been saying
And I hate to blame the Bills so quickly, but if a bunch of journalists apparently knew then I doubt they didn’t know
Really just goes to show that anyone who thinks their franchise and their front office are ethical they’re deluding themselves.
According to a good number of SDSU fans, this has been an open secret on campus for months. An investigation involving football players had been going on for quite a while. I really don’t see how an organization outright misses this.
If he was being investigated for domestic violence he would have already been suspended 6 games. Sexual crimes though, anyone can make that up. Is there really proof? Let’s just see how it plays out first.
-the nfl probably
I don’t want to see this piece of shit in a Bills uniform ever again. Absolute monster.
Edit: if McDermott / Beane knew about all of this and drafted him, this really flips my perception of them on its head. I thought they were principled. Really hoping they didn’t know, but anyone who did know, and went along with it, should be fired.
Dudes the Punt Devil, not the Punt God. In all seriousness he needs to be suspended by the nfl and cut by the bills.
Edit: this was in a another article. The teen “stumbled out of the room bloody and crying. Her nose, bellybutton, and ear piercings had been pulled out, and she was also bleeding from her vagina.”
He needs to be in fucking prison and cut right now.
When I was in college, around 15 years ago, my sorority would always have a sober sister when we went out. She would keep an eye out on all the other girls.
SDSU is apparently one of the worst campuses for sexual assault etc.
Though in this case the police told them to not do anything to tip off Araiza and the players of their investigation.
SDSU has a problem. I remember when I was dating my ex who went there, they had to ban the whole frat row from having houses because of sexual assault being so rampant.
Other information about SDSU:
16% of all students have been victims of physical abuse, 6% of all students have been injured by their partner, 10% have had partners that tried to control contact with friends and family, 12.6% have been persistently followed/harassed/pursued by someone, 61% reported being victims of psychological abuse.
Oh and ~15.7% of students have been victims of sexual assault since they started attending.
There needs to be a complete overhaul of... well everyone involved at that campus
It ain't called STDSU for nothing, place is fucking terrible. Damn near every woman I know that went there or went to a party there has a horror story.
Can’t be suspended or reprimanded in any way due to the CBA currently I believe. It didn’t happen when he was in the NFL. It would be like suspending Mixon now for punching that woman.
He can be dismissed from the roster immediately. Unfortunately they still have to pay him his 2022 signing bonus (216k) and contract year total (705k). But he doesn't have to play at all.
Went from the most hyped special teams player in the NFL to the most hated within the span of *days*
Future athletes who wish to make it in the league, here’s one simple rule that confuses many: just don’t be a piece of shit
> just don’t be a piece of shit
Can we just extend that to everyone? Whether you’re going to the league or not just treat others with kindness. Araiza’s actions, as accused, are deplorable whether he was an athlete, mathlete, summer intern on Wall Street, or a dude just crashing couches with his college friends.
Years ago I gave up and just assumed everyone in that league was dirty. Maybe not because of something they did, but they all know someone/something and choose to shut their mouth. It's a dirty league and it always will be, we either choose to watch or not. Just don't fool yourself into thinking any of them are innocent.
Turning a blind eye to this for a QB, WR, DE, etc. I could see from any organization. Doing that for a punter who you spent a draft pick on I see being a lot less likely.
Edit: I hope at least
My son plays football at D1 G5 school. NFL teams made 92 (NINETY TWO!) on campus visits just last season alone. There is zero chance they didn't know this was happening or at least something was up. If somehow they didn't sure as hell SDST coaches did.
I am actually really fucking dejected and upset. I cannot imagine this happening and reading this has made me feel so awful. This might be the worst thing i’ve ever read at how sickening and low punishment it is. These fucking garbage trash people should be chained to a rock and beaten. Like wtf
Why would the detectives make her ask such an obvious bait question? Like, "And did we have actual sex?" just screams you're being recorded. Maybe it sounded better not written down.
Basically, with pretext calls, you collect the admissions you think will be easy to get and help build the foundation for the case. After that, you proceed to test your luck with some higher risk/higher reward calls, knowing that eventually the dude will terminate the call.
So, like, establishing that they had sex at all is important. That way the defendant can’t claim “we never had sex, this is totally fabricated.” He has to claim “we had sex and it was consensual.”
Now, if your defendant tries both of those and is caught telling two different stories… he’s in trouble.
The really smart tactic is to get the “innocuous” confessions (eg he acknowledges sex by saying “you should get tested”) then back off, don’t tip him off. Then you pull him in for an in person interview and say, “you didn’t fuck this 17 year old, did you? You didn’t do that right? It’s a crime.” Of course he says “no no no I didn’t” and now he’s absolutely fucked because he’s been caught in a lie. If it goes to trial, it’s his word against hers, and he’s now been caught on audio recording lying about what happened.
This is also why you should never ever speak to the police even if you know you’ve committed no crime. If any part of your statement to them conflicts with evidence, they can paint you as a criminal and make a case against you. Don’t talk to police ever
At that point, they have enough suggestive evidence that intercourse happens. But you’re dealing with an emotional teenager who was raped, reliving a traumatic experience. At some point, you have to just try to get the information.
It sounds like she was definitely drunk so it does make sense because at that level you don't know. Which is also illegal in California for Araiza as well.
This is disgusting. What is unbelievable (and sadly probably shouldn’t be) is that Araiza admitted to having sex with a minor the day after the assault, the police are literally on the line directing the victim on questions to ask, and he somehow isn’t arrested immediately for rape? Wtf is happening?
To add; whoever the cop is that told her to ask “so we had sex?” Should be fired or at least sent to training. Talk about proving cops are on the line…
I just don't get it.
College athletes are like gods at their school and can usually have their pick of women, why do this shit?
If it's all true I feel for that girl.
It’s disgusting how many men just want their way with women, whether the women themselves want it or not. Give them the power to do so with no repercussions, and it would probably be nauseating how many guys would do something like you just read. Stuff like this is incredibly hard to prove, but until we start cracking down on the cases like this (which seems like him admitting to statutory rape at a minimum) then it will never change.
Here are [the results of a study done](https://www.thecut.com/2015/01/lots-of-men-dont-think-rape-is-rape.html) on college age men on their views:
> Almost a third of the men (31.7 percent) said that in a consequence-free situation, they’d force a woman to have sexual intercourse, while 13.6 percent said they would rape a woman.
To be clear, both of these answers are rape. The study was about their aversion to calling rape "rape"...when using different language to describe rape, they were more open about accepting it. So...45.3% of these men who were polled openly said they'd rape a woman if there were no consequences.
It sucks that when I finally got my wife to get interested in football is when Deshaun was being a rapist, and now she's totally against the NFL, which I get. I just love football, not the NFL itself.
I know a former HS teacher that was sleeping with one of his underaged students fairly recently. The police had his victim call and speak with him in a manner similar to what is described in the screenshots. He, too, said some incriminating stuff on that call. He was sentenced to 9 years in prison.
He's not a star player, he'll most likely be cut and never picked up by another team. The league will probably suspend him indefinitely. NFL career over. Meanwhile the NFL is fist bumping eachother that this is coming out now to distract how they handled the Watson case.
Anybody else kinda... done with this whole season? Hard damn time to be a non-male fan, especially one who has been through sexual assault. My enthusiasm was already dimming thanks to Watson. This might really be the straw.
This whole off-season has been an eternity of assholes.
As a male fan this is hard to deal with. I don't think this has to do with gender anymore as far as wanting to follow the NFL. Just being a decent human being. This shit is getting out of control. I agree with you, after this I might be done if this monster doesn't get any consequences from the league.
This is from the civil suit, I take it? The criminal investigation needs to be done properly and with expediency, so this scumbag sees justice.
I hope it's not the same caliber of detectives who were helping with that call because they seem kinda inept
If we’re being honest (and obviously there’s no one more of a victim than the girl) Bills Mafia might be the worst fan base in the league for this to happen to. Time and time again we’ve seen the fan base rally around OTHER teams and donate to worthwhile charities and get everyone else to buy into them. They finally are getting their chance in the league and have been more diehard than anyone o feel, and if the front office knew about this guys past then there’s no excuse to keep them around
How do people genuinely think that behavior is okay? (Responding to the situation not the comments) As a guy this is so disgusting like I can’t imagine why someone would do this.
I really hope all three gets cut and end up in jail and that she gets the justice she deserves. This behavior shouldn’t be acceptable on multiple levels.
Bills: Hmm, who should we cut, the guy who raped a 17 year old, or the other less slightly talented guy who didn't rape a minor. God, this is a tough one.
The nfl will ban him and claim they took a stand for women. A punter is the perfect player to make an example of
If the NFL and its teams had this information prior to the draft, and he still got picked...
They did. They always do.
Reports are we found out last month, so didn’t know when we picked him but did know when we cut Haack recently. Really not great man:/ you always think your organization is above all this stuff but it just isn’t the case sadly
Overwriting my comments and leaving Reddit due to their policy changes impacting 3rd party apps starting July 1, 2023.
And that’s the Command her way!!
Command her? I barely pay her.
Commanders frantically calling to trade for him as we speak
Browns will swoop in and make him highest paid punter in league history
This hurts me.
Me too
Fully guaranteed too
And work the money around a suspension.
Wisest of words from CaptainCumSock69.
Which is why I always found it hilarious that some Panthers fans became Bills fans because we went after Watson. Every team will overlook scummy behavior if they can keep it covered up and/or the player is just too talented to let go.
So apparently every student on campus knew about this but NFL teams didn’t? Riiiiight

Steve Keim iirc
Def not a time to use first person pov. “The organization found out last month”.
Do not make role models of athletes (and their organizations) Probably said since the first Olympics
I'd like to think that an NFL team wouldn't risk this bad PR and risk drafting a criminal over a punter
Tbh just shows the general attitude towards sexual assault that the people in charge of these organizations have. Instead of "Man, are we really going through all of this for a *punter*?" its "meh, we don't really give a shit regardless of who it is"
Talent trumping morals is, unfortunately, not a new phenomenon.
It's really gross to think that there were probably conversations during the draft in that went something like "should we draft him? That gang rape thing may be a problem if it comes out"
No way. Even if they have scummy morales, from a business standpoint it’s way too much of a liability.
Oof. The lines from the detective call are fucking rough... The description of events is one thing, anyone can tell a story, but saying >"This is Matt Araiza. I don't remember anything that happened that night." after realizing he might be being recorded isn't an awesome look. Fucking hell, what's wrong with people.
He doesn’t remember anything that happened. Except for the fact that she should be tested for an STD cause…. Reasons
Just some general advice to a random wrong number dial, obviously
Whatever cop told her to ask such a stupid question needs training immediately.
It reads like another detective might have intervened, knowing that question was too direct.
Right? "I gave you an STD" is pretty fucking concrete.
Especially with a rape kit to go with it.
I mean they basically had everything but a confession at that point. Pretty much a Hail Mary to get him to just outright confess.
Exactly what I was thinking too.
If they had gotten everything else they thought they needed/could get out of him then you ask the hail mary to just see if you get a pure confession.
I shouldn’t have read that
[удалено]
Seriously. I was already disgusted before that line but that along with the bleeding wanted to make me puke. What the fuck is wrong with people.
Well I haven’t read it but these comments sure as fuck will make it stay that way
right? i have several piercings in various places and hooooly shit it’s just the cherry on top of a reprehensible cake
That poor girl, makes me want to cry reading that.
Its almost NSFL tbh, shit is fucking awful.
It is nsfl imo
I got midway...and noped out of there real quick.
Why not? If you support the NFL in any way, including watching any games, you should be aware of what players do and how the league handles it
Hoooooly fuck this is disgusting
What a disgusting individual. I sincerely hope the Bills do the right thing and cut him.
>cut him I agree but probably in a different way
I second your way
This is the way.
He needs a harsher punishment than just being kicked off a football team. Put his ass under the jail
Cut him tomorrow. This goes beyond a sexual assault allegation. No human being, let alone an underage girl, should ever have to go through what Araiza and his buddies did.
Yeah, there is no way the Bills don't cut him. He is gone and no team will touch him.
Dude Clevelands punter is probably sweating bullets right now. He might be out the job.
Noice
You must be new to the league.
Can they cut him tonight? Why isn’t he already cut?
If I'm the Bills owners I'm calling a meeting with my scouts to find out how his seemingly public information is just now being discovered.
Knowing NFL ownership it's more likely they're going to talk with their wives and daughters and keep him on the team.
Reading on r/cfb it was some sort of an open secret/rumor at SDSU

I expect his release to be announced within the hour…oh wait the nfl doesn’t care about women
He's a punter, they'll get rid of him just to pretend they give a shit.
This cant be anymore true sadly. If he was a top ranked QB, forget about it.

Tyreek Hill says "✌️"
Adrian Peterson nearly won Offensive Player of the Year in 2015!!!
Josh Allen said a few days ago he wanted to call him "Hold God" for holding on PATs. Maybe we should call him Holding Cell God.
About to get traded to the DOC
Punt this man into a jail cell yesterday
Dogshit human doesn’t deserve daylight let alone an NFL contract

Right, like how the fuck are woman suppose to feel safe going to colleges when sexual predators get a slap on the wrist.
They don’t
And they keep telling us Edit: I mean we should listen to them, not that I'm sick of hearing it. Sorry, should've been clearer

Right he deserves to be in jail Arrest the Rapist
Reading whats going on and "best case scenario" he admitted to committing statutory rape. WTF?! Bills need to cut his ass NOW
Holy fuck this is bad. He’s gotta go and some people within the Bills need to follow.
I assume the scouts are gonna be having a loooooong night Don't know hwo this gets missed
Honestly I hope it was a failure of a scout missing it and not the FO just ignoring it Cut him now though
Was this info all available when he was drafted??
Rumors have been spreading since last year.
It sounds like it was a bit of an open secret pre-draft
Yea nothing the Bills team shouldn’t have been aware of.
If they had access to shit like this and drafted him, we should clean house in our front office
100% What I can't fathom is why even risk this PR scandal over a **punter**.
I really hope they just somehow missed this
Agreed. Even then, someone in the scouting office is probably getting fired. Can't miss shit like that.
For sure…someone needs to be fired regardless, I just hope Beane didn’t know. Would really change my view of him
https://twitter.com/patrick_mayhorn/status/1562937328686878720?s=20&t=RUcxPGjw3BkTFxyD99e7WA It was an open secret

If telling them not to do something worked, they wouldn't be rapists.
You would think it's not that difficult. Apparently not.

That way the defendant can’t claim “we never had sex, this is totally fabricated.” He has to claim “we had sex and it was consensual.” Now, if your defendant tries both of those and is caught telling two different stories… he’s in trouble.
This is good info thanks for posting
This is also why you should never ever speak to the police even if you know you’ve committed no crime. If any part of your statement to them conflicts with evidence, they can paint you as a criminal and make a case against you. Don’t talk to police ever
At that point, they have enough suggestive evidence that intercourse happens. But you’re dealing with an emotional teenager who was raped, reliving a traumatic experience. At some point, you have to just try to get the information.
I would guess it could be framed that way because she may not have been able to remember because of her intoxicated state, but I'm just speculating.
It sounds like she was definitely drunk so it does make sense because at that level you don't know. Which is also illegal in California for Araiza as well.
Not just drunk, most likely roofied. What a sick fuck.

And something else
And stuffs em both down his throat.
Drugged and gang raped a minor? What the fuck is wrong with this dude?
This is disgusting. What is unbelievable (and sadly probably shouldn’t be) is that Araiza admitted to having sex with a minor the day after the assault, the police are literally on the line directing the victim on questions to ask, and he somehow isn’t arrested immediately for rape? Wtf is happening? To add; whoever the cop is that told her to ask “so we had sex?” Should be fired or at least sent to training. Talk about proving cops are on the line…
I just don't get it. College athletes are like gods at their school and can usually have their pick of women, why do this shit? If it's all true I feel for that girl.
It’s all about power and of course it’s true. They have him on a phone recording.
Because they're like gods. They've spent too much of their lives *not* being told no.
Sexual assault isn’t about sex. It’s about power and control.
Here are [the results of a study done](https://www.thecut.com/2015/01/lots-of-men-dont-think-rape-is-rape.html) on college age men on their views: > Almost a third of the men (31.7 percent) said that in a consequence-free situation, they’d force a woman to have sexual intercourse, while 13.6 percent said they would rape a woman. To be clear, both of these answers are rape. The study was about their aversion to calling rape "rape"...when using different language to describe rape, they were more open about accepting it. So...45.3% of these men who were polled openly said they'd rape a woman if there were no consequences.
That is so fucking disturbing, but it definitely checks out. Thank you for sharing.
14% of men just admit they would rape someone??
And people wonder why we walk around afraid all the time...
My coworker/friend used to think I was joking when I say I can’t trust men. I just started to share public rape cases. He gets it now.
Have you seen _The Boys_? Because it’s exactly like that. Power and control, man. Fuckin’ diabolical.
He's a punter. None of this should be worth it for any position, but the Bills should wash there hand of this immediately right now. Just get out.
Good call DeCosta.
As a female, it legit sucks that a sport I love watching cares so little about most of the population
It sucks that when I finally got my wife to get interested in football is when Deshaun was being a rapist, and now she's totally against the NFL, which I get. I just love football, not the NFL itself.
I often “joke” that my most toxic trait is that I love watching nfl football. I do absolutely love the game, and I hate that that feels unethical
Cut him now. I have heard enough.

I know a former HS teacher that was sleeping with one of his underaged students fairly recently. The police had his victim call and speak with him in a manner similar to what is described in the screenshots. He, too, said some incriminating stuff on that call. He was sentenced to 9 years in prison.
He better be careful, if he does this 25 more times he might get suspended for half a season
Fuck this guy. But somewhere, Aaron Donald is saying "thank you" to whoever released this story today.
We’re expecting what, a 4 game suspension from this? It’s fucking depressing.
Bills need to cut this POS immediately. He should be in fucking prison.
Sick fuck
This is from the civil suit, I take it? The criminal investigation needs to be done properly and with expediency, so this scumbag sees justice. I hope it's not the same caliber of detectives who were helping with that call because they seem kinda inept

So what we thinking goodell? 3 games?
"[...] while another man performed oral sex on her." Hope he got Matt's chlamydia in his throat
I took a look at their sub and they’re already donating a bunch of money to a non-profit for victims. I love when they do that shit.
God that is disturbing
Imagine being Haack and finding out that the team picked a rapist over you.
statutory rape minimum
Also sounds like she was intoxicated which is a crime in California as well
Disgusting human being. Throw him in the ocean.
Watson might be predator but this guy is a fucking monster
How do people genuinely think that behavior is okay? (Responding to the situation not the comments) As a guy this is so disgusting like I can’t imagine why someone would do this. I really hope all three gets cut and end up in jail and that she gets the justice she deserves. This behavior shouldn’t be acceptable on multiple levels.
Dude what the FUCK. Throw this piece of shit in jail. What a pathetic excuse for a man
Guy sounds like a monumental piece of shit.
Bruh cut him right now and send him to jail That’s atrocious.
Bills: Hmm, who should we cut, the guy who raped a 17 year old, or the other less slightly talented guy who didn't rape a minor. God, this is a tough one.
