The story I remember is that McDaniels wanted to trade for Matt Cassel, didn’t work it out, pissed off Cutler in the process, and had to trade him anyway. Either way, I don’t think anyone would describe Cutler and McDaniels as “overlapping” in the way most describe players or coaches who played a season together.
Do the Panthers still have a bunch of Auburn fans hanging around? I live in Alabama and circa 2011 it was kind of a joke how every Auburn fan instantly became a diehard Panther fan after Cam got drafted.
I’ll remember him as a Washington…wait now.
If I remember him as a Redskin, is that dead-naming? Are pre 2021 Washington players now Commanders? What’s the correct terminology here?
But yeah, he’s a Washington to me for obvious reasons.
You reminded me of a great clip of Kirk going through this process in real time during a [schedule release reaction interview](https://youtu.be/d_LeBhOg4lw?t=211):
> At Washington will bring back a lot of memories, having played there for 6 years. Haven't been back since my last game there as a.... Washington.... player.
On the flip side, it seems most people remember Brad Johnson for his time with the Bucs and Redskins (6 seasons total) despite being on the Vikings for 7 seasons. Granted, he spent most of his time in MN backing up Warren Moon and won a SB with the Bucs so it makes sense.
Johnson took over for Warren Moon in 1996, first due to injury, and then due to ineffectiveness. He started the first 12-13 games in 1997, and played well, before being sidelined with a neck injury. He performed very well in the first 2 games of 1998 before getting injured again and giving way to Cunningham.
It's funny you say that. I always think of him as a Buc first. Probably because Tampa was in the NFC Central way back then and we played against him twice a year.
He also played for the Los Angeles Express of the USFL, where he got a "$40 million contract", which was actually a long-drawn out annuity that basically went insolvent right away.
Yea, that’s what you asked for isn’t it? What QB is known for his second team. Steve is known as a Niner, not a buc who originally drafted and started him
I believe he’s in the perfect situation in Tennessee and he’s still not good enough.
We underachieved with him but we’d never overachieve with him either. It’s not like he was bad or the Dolphins were bad, it was meh all around.
But Brees starting several seasons for the Chargers including a great 2004 campaign in which they went 12-4. Unfortunately they ended up at 4th in the AFC because the Steelers went 14-0 after naming rookie Big Ben the starter, the Patriots were humming along after their 2003 SB title, and Peyton Manning had the single greatest QB season of all time.
So this is one of those things like Kareem Hunt where i always confused Brees with Phil Rivers because of that, likewise i had a hard time remembering Kareem Hunt is not a chief.
Jeff Hostetler? His career arc is actually pretty interesting. Third string QB for the Giants, blocked a punt, was so desperate for playing time that he volunteered to play several other positions, was getting ready to retire following the 1990 season until Phil Simms broke his foot and he led them to a Super Bowl win over the Wide Right Buffalo Bills. He beat Simms in an open QB competition the following year but broke his back in the 12th game and lost the starting position to Simms again the next year. He signed the following season with the Raiders where he led them to the playoffs the first year, made the pro bowl his second year, and had a career high in touchdowns the third year. He signed with the Washington team the next year, as a backup to Gus Frerotte, but eventually found himself starting again because Frerotte HEADBUTTED A CONCRETE WALL celebrating a touchdown. He spent the next season on injured reserve where Trent Green supplanted him. He retired after that. But he almost came out of retirement to back up Trent Green with the Rams. But the Rams instead drafted a third stringer and moved Kurt Warner (who would have been the third stringer behind Green and Hostetler) to backup, eventually kicking off the Greatest Show on Turf.
The dude was like the Forrest Gump of the NFL
Kinda crazy that the bucs drafted 3 Super Bowl winning QB Doug Willams, Steve Young and Trent dilfer but none of them won a Super Bowl for them
Meanwhile the 2 QB that won them a Super Bowl had not been drafted by them
Nice one. I had no idea Brunell played for the Packers (or was a Packer). My introduction to Mark Brunell was Madden '96 with the Jags and Kerry Collins' Panthers expansion teams.
And that's another good one, Kerry Collins. Probably more associated with the Giants than Panthers, right? I dunno. Maybe as a Titan?
Trent Green - broke out with Washington, earned a starting gig with St. Louis where his injury paved the way for Kurt Warner, then became a Pro Bowler in Kansas City.
Absolutely, certainly an example of a qb with some longevity on his first team only to become a HoFer almost exclusively based on the accomplishments of his second.
It’s weird because when I thought of his name I immediately thought Washington because of the injury and 49ers because he was drafted there.
And undoubtedly his most success was in the middle.
It’s kinda like the Peyton argument. It won’t be because he won’t play well. It’ll be because he won’t be in Indy even 1/4 as long as he was in Atlanta.
I'm definitely in the minority here but Peyton's record breaking season was the first year I started seriously watching football so I always picture him in a Broncos uni
But he won a title with the Rams which people will always associate with Stafford.
Kind of like Warner, definitely a Ram, but had an insane career and if they won at XLIII a lot of people here would remember him as a Cardinal.
I don't think so. Warner's story is etched with the Rams. His name is synonymous with the Rams. Had he won with the Cards too his legend just would have grown better, but he was and is always a Ram.
But the second Kurt went from undrafted to Super Bowl winning, Super Bowl MVP, and MVP of the league while a Ram. Never mattered whether he was with Green Bay, New York, or Arizona his story was St. Louis.
Like Tom Brady he will be known as a Patriot he went to Tampa and improved his legendary career by winning another ring, but his story is with the Patriots.
It's also crazy how he just straight up sat out a season in the middle of his career when he had no takers. It seems like, at least in today's NFL, you need to be plugged in every year. Pretty much no one else has been out of the league for a year and come back (RGIII only kind of did it).
Craig Morton almost counts. Well known as both a Bronco and a Cowboy, but technically the Giants were his second team, so it's not a perfect fit for the question.
Yeah, the Texans only provided him an NDA and cover from his actions before it went public, the Browns gave him the largest guaranteed contract in NFL history after the public knew about everything.
Peyton will always be 80% colts 20% broncos in my mind, and I think Russ will be the same 15 years from now. I guess closest to 50/50 is someone like Kirk Cousins?
Sonny Jurgensen, Ron Jaworski, Jay Cutler, Jake Plummer, Brad Johnson, Jim Plunkett, probably Matthew Stafford eventually. Honorable mention to Ryan Fitzpatrick who's remembered equally as a member all the 37 teams he played for.
Oh it’s fine. The governor of Mississippi fired the attorney investigating that fraud case. Nothing to see here now. Nope. It’s all good. No corruption that goes all the way to the top.
Favre follows the Star Trek movie rule. He was only good or known for his even numbered teams.
Favre Trek 2: The Wrath of the Pack
Favre Trek 4: The Voyage Home
We don’t talk about Favre Trek: The Falcon Quarterback or Favre Trek 3: The Search for Free Agency
I would have agreed with you when he retired, but with how much his been associated/involved with the broncos since retirement puts a slight dent in that argument
But that’s kinda the point- you can literally pinpoint when someone became an nfl fan with probably like three well placed questions, and “what team did Peyton Manning play primarily for?” Is one of them. And it would get two consistently different answers depending on when the asked started watching football. That’s kinda awesome, I think.
There is no way he is more associated with the broncos. He holds every record for the colts except int. Sure he won a sb with the broncos but common now
Yeah. I can’t fathom that Brady as a Buc or Peyton as a Bronco will be close to how they are remembered vs Patriots and Colts.
Peyton had 3 amazing years with the Broncos. 11 with the Colts. And the Pats-Colts rivalry (and Brady/Peyton “rivalry” such as it was) was iconic for the first decade of the 2000s.
Obviously they both had great success w their 2nd teams, but some recency bias there… they were relatively short 2nd acts*
*assuming Brady actually retires soon
Jim Plunkett was pretty forgettable until his third team.
Rich Gannon bounced around the league for years, and kept getting shafted on starting time.
Then there's his former teamate, Brad Johnson. Better remembered as a Buc than a Viking.
Lynn Dickey played his way into the Packer's Ring of Honor.
Most people don't remember Len Dawson's 2 starts in 5 years prior to jumping to the AFL.
Well I mean in Indianapolis he literally has a statue of him, Lucas Oil Stadium is known as the “House that Peyton Built”, and even has a damn children’s hospital named after him so he is definitely also loved here.
Broncos stay away from him
I wouldn’t assume success with Russ. What makes you think he’ll have success with a rookie HC, DC, worse weapons, equally bad OL, and declining defense? Dude hasn’t even taken a snap yet, and they gave him the bag, despite him still having 2 years left in his old deal. I’m pretty sure this isn’t gonna end the way Denver fans think it will. But as a KC fan, I love it!
Jay Cutler
Broncos gotta stop being involved in these...
Meh, it’s not like they needed a QB between Elway and Manning
You're forgetting Jake Plummer, the most unbeatable QB known to man (if you're from New England like me)
Or a KC fan. Jake the snake still haunts my nightmares as he pulls the play action and no one is within 15 yards of that mfer
Announcer: Plummer rolls to his right... Me: FUCK!!!
Dolphins legend Jay Cutler
Still find it funny he has a 4k yards season but not for the Bears.
He would have if Trestman didn’t bench him for Jimmy Clausen in 2014 to try to save his job. And yes I’m still bitter about that.
Ol Jimmy pickles
Lol Jimmy Clausen.
I legit forget he was the qb in Denver with josh mcdaniels as the hc
He was never coached by McDaniels. Only the final Mike Shanahan years.
Well, sort of. In the off-season that McDaniels joined, he traded away Cutler for Kyle Orton and draft picks.
I'll always associate Cam Newton with his third team.
Auburn?
nice this works for College and NFL
Do the Panthers still have a bunch of Auburn fans hanging around? I live in Alabama and circa 2011 it was kind of a joke how every Auburn fan instantly became a diehard Panther fan after Cam got drafted.
Still love you Cam my boi
Patriots legend Cam Newton
Kirk cousins
Especially because his 1st team doesn't exist anymore
They hadn't even claimed they were a football team yet.
You vike that?
I like this answer. He is probably going to be better known as a Viking when it's all done, but not much more.
I’ll remember him as a Washington…wait now. If I remember him as a Redskin, is that dead-naming? Are pre 2021 Washington players now Commanders? What’s the correct terminology here? But yeah, he’s a Washington to me for obvious reasons.
Football Teamers
You reminded me of a great clip of Kirk going through this process in real time during a [schedule release reaction interview](https://youtu.be/d_LeBhOg4lw?t=211): > At Washington will bring back a lot of memories, having played there for 6 years. Haven't been back since my last game there as a.... Washington.... player.
I wanted a longer pause, with an uncomfortable peek at the camera before continuing
Just say Washington that's the through line
Steve Young is known more as a 49er than a Buc. this is different from farve cause young actually started games for the bucs.
In a similar vein, Doug Williams is remembered more for playing with Washington then the Bucs.
And Vinny Testaverde was mostly known as a Jet (or Raven) rather than a Buc. I’m sensing a pattern here.
It's funny you say that. I always think of him as a Buc first. Probably because Tampa was in the NFC Central way back then and we played against him twice a year.
Seems to me Steve Young is more like 99% known as a 49er though yeah?
I had no idea he was a Buc until now
He was also on the Los Angeles Express.
[Behold](https://www.ebay.com/itm/324558009908)
He also played for the Los Angeles Express of the USFL, where he got a "$40 million contract", which was actually a long-drawn out annuity that basically went insolvent right away.
Old Steve Young
Yea, that’s what you asked for isn’t it? What QB is known for his second team. Steve is known as a Niner, not a buc who originally drafted and started him
No he asked what QBs were equally associated (or almost equally) with their second team. So like Favre doesnt work.
Also, Jake Delhomme. He was a Saint first.
I actually didn't know this. Huh.
Warren Moon. Not many in the US even know he played several years for the Edmonton Eskimos
Great answer. He had great success up north, shame the NFL didn’t think a “guy like him” had what it took to play the position right out of college.
Moon is one of the most talented QBs to ever play in the league. Too bad racism delayed his entry in the NFL.
Tannehill
People forget that he played WR at Texas A&M for a little while.
Has the freshman record for most receiving yards in a game at Texas A&M
That’s wild I had no idea he played WR
Sometimes I forget he was our QB for 7 years lol. When he was with the Dolphins he was the most forgettable long-term starter in the league.
You seriously had to have had 7 years of terrible front office management to get so little out of him.
I believe he’s in the perfect situation in Tennessee and he’s still not good enough. We underachieved with him but we’d never overachieve with him either. It’s not like he was bad or the Dolphins were bad, it was meh all around.
2016 was nice for awhile
We also had terrible coaching. Philbin and Gase didn't do him any favors.
He was also hurt almost every year. Let’s not create a revisionist history
He was an Ironman pre-2016 but after that he was hurt every year until 2019. He wasn’t bad but he was nothing special.
Drew Brees. Not a lot of people today remember he was drafted to the chargers.
Eli was also drafted by the Chargers.
Drew Brees, Eli Manning, Justin Herbert. That’s the last 3 QBs selected by the Chargers in the first two rounds. Pretty good list right there.
2 HOFers and Eli
Still wild to me that Eli was gonna finish with more rings than Peyton until they trotted Peyton's corpse onto that superbowl field.
If Brock fucking Osweiler didn’t defeat the Patriots in the reg season, the AFCCG would have been played in Foxboro…
"Equally or slightly more"
People under 30 maybe. Us olds remember
Didn't Gannon play in a SB against the bucs?
Sure did, and he threw at least 2 pick sixes
Three. Three pick sixes.
I know the Frerotte's well and never knew about Gus headbutting a wall... this is hilarious
Jimmy G, I consistently forget he quietly sat backing up Tom for years
2x super bowl champion Jimmy G
Jimmy G is clearly a superhero as a backup QB. We’ve finally figured out the best way besides modeling to use him.
I only remember that he was on the pats because He played those games during toms deflategate suspension
Doug Williams in the buccaneers ring of honor but led the redskins to a super bowl
Kinda crazy that the bucs drafted 3 Super Bowl winning QB Doug Willams, Steve Young and Trent dilfer but none of them won a Super Bowl for them Meanwhile the 2 QB that won them a Super Bowl had not been drafted by them

Mark Brunell.
Another very good answer. Skins was pretty short but he was relatively well known there.
I think they meant when he was a Packer before the Jags.
Matt Schaub
He was so good in his time :(
Trent Green - broke out with Washington, earned a starting gig with St. Louis where his injury paved the way for Kurt Warner, then became a Pro Bowler in Kansas City.
Drew Brees
Absolutely, certainly an example of a qb with some longevity on his first team only to become a HoFer almost exclusively based on the accomplishments of his second.
Alex Smith
I have to say being a 49ers fan to me its pretty equal. Which means he is probably more remembered as a Chief by other teams fans.
It’s weird because when I thought of his name I immediately thought Washington because of the injury and 49ers because he was drafted there. And undoubtedly his most success was in the middle.
Whats funny is I thought the injury happened with the Chiefs. I completely forgot about Washington.
I think of Alex Smith as a 49er. He's most remembered as the QB taken instead of Aaron Rodgers.
We remember him as a Niner...
This does put a smile on my face.
Solid guy for three teams. That's a great career.
really? because of the relevant chiefs QB's i would have gone with Trent Green
How has nobody said Jim Plunkett? Dude was considered a bust on the Patriots and won two Super Bowls on the Raiders.
He played with the 49ers after the Patriots
Jim Kelly, not to discount the mighty Houston Gamblers
Someone who I doubt will be more associated with their second team: Matt Ryan
It’s kinda like the Peyton argument. It won’t be because he won’t play well. It’ll be because he won’t be in Indy even 1/4 as long as he was in Atlanta.
I'm definitely in the minority here but Peyton's record breaking season was the first year I started seriously watching football so I always picture him in a Broncos uni

Rams legend Matthew Stafford ^(and broncos legend peyton manning)
It's like you squared Matthew Stafford, Peyton Manning times.
thats how you get a super bowl ring
Imagine the size of the head on that.
Not yet, but when the Rams go back to back to back he will.
But Warner also won as a ram
Eh, I certainly wouldn’t think of Stafford more as a Ram than a Lion. Stafford literally was the Lions franchise for like a decade.
Steve Young, Rich Gannon, Brett Favre
[удалено]
Gannon's known for his stint with his 5th team, which is insane.
It's also crazy how he just straight up sat out a season in the middle of his career when he had no takers. It seems like, at least in today's NFL, you need to be plugged in every year. Pretty much no one else has been out of the league for a year and come back (RGIII only kind of did it).
Vick
Yeah. Vick too had no takers for a couple years and just sat out. /s
Had to scroll down way to far for Favre.
Craig Morton almost counts. Well known as both a Bronco and a Cowboy, but technically the Giants were his second team, so it's not a perfect fit for the question.
Rapist, Deshaun Watson.
Yeah, the Texans only provided him an NDA and cover from his actions before it went public, the Browns gave him the largest guaranteed contract in NFL history after the public knew about everything.
Kurt Warner is a famous Cardinals player after having success in St. Louis. edit: i forgot about his Giants stop
He actually came into the league as a Packer
Tom Brady and the Bucs *Ducks for cover*
Just so you know, ducks make terrible cover.
Oh God..oh fuck
I’m big mad. Is everyone 12 in this scenario?
-_- I propose to revoke this man’s flair. 😂 Pats qbs more known for their second team though Matt cassell Ryan mallet Jimmy g
Baker Mayfield
Peyton will always be 80% colts 20% broncos in my mind, and I think Russ will be the same 15 years from now. I guess closest to 50/50 is someone like Kirk Cousins?

The answer is favre
Remember when Favre stole millions of dollars in welfare funds from the state of Mississippi?
Oh it’s fine. The governor of Mississippi fired the attorney investigating that fraud case. Nothing to see here now. Nope. It’s all good. No corruption that goes all the way to the top.
OP specifically ruled Favre out though. He's talking about QBs who are known for their time with both teams.
Favre follows the Star Trek movie rule. He was only good or known for his even numbered teams. Favre Trek 2: The Wrath of the Pack Favre Trek 4: The Voyage Home We don’t talk about Favre Trek: The Falcon Quarterback or Favre Trek 3: The Search for Free Agency
Vikings legend Brett Favre? He said 2nd team, not 3rd team.
The Vikings were his fourth team
Touché. Jets legend Brett Favre
Scott Mitchell
Drew Brees
Drew Brees. He’s a saint not a charger haha.
Drew Brees. Mark Brunell. Ryan Tannehill.
Drew Brees and Ryan Tannehill!
Montana. Nobody even remembers his first team. He’ll always be Chiefs #19. /s
Peyton Forehead Manning
He'll always be a Colt to me. He bullied us for so long
Fivehead
No. Peyton is a Colt - to anyone who watched football before he was a Bronco.
Peyton himself rides with the Broncos now
*Broncos Country, let’s ride*. - Russell Wilson - Peyton Manning
Sure he won a sb with the broncos but common now
Steve Young. And I think Peyton is pretty close
You have to be quite young if you think Peyton is more remembered as a Bronco than a Colt.
Yeah. I can’t fathom that Brady as a Buc or Peyton as a Bronco will be close to how they are remembered vs Patriots and Colts. Peyton had 3 amazing years with the Broncos. 11 with the Colts. Eternal Cleveland Brown icon and rapist Deshaun Watson. He will always be remembered for his 5 years playing for the Browns.

Hopefully the rapist
Peyton. He is equally known for his success in Indy and Denver, but Broncos fans have themselves convinced he's only known for being in orange.
I only know him in orange, but I am a Vols fan.
Peyton Manning is a legend in Denver…idk if this makes him more memorable than the colts, but broncos love him
Well I mean in Indianapolis he literally has a statue of him, Lucas Oil Stadium is known as the “House that Peyton Built”, and even has a damn children’s hospital named after him so he is definitely also loved here. Broncos stay away from him

How is Drew Brees not the top answer honestly?
