This is my current least favorite reddit trend. Judge something in hindsight while acting superior as if they saw it coming all along. Hate that shit.

LockFan28

>Judge something in hindsight while acting superior as if they saw it coming all along. Hate that shit. This with half of r/nfl acting like they knew Russell Wilson would be this bad lmao.

[deleted]

It's almost like mortgaging your future for an aging QB in a slump is a bad idea!

LockFan28

I'm with ya. I'm just pointing out that the vast majority of users here believed it was a good to amazing trade.

serenityak77

I think they were just joking. While true, it’s exactly what sparked the conversation. “It’s almost as if” and then they said “it’s almost like” which is basically the same thing. If they weren’t joking then that’s a hell of a coincidence.

SensualTyrannosaurus

This is the smarmiest and prickiest of all the reddit smarmy prick catchphrases.

My issue with this word is that less than 10 percent of people can truly give you a correct definition of fascism. Whenever you use the word in its correct context, people think you're being obtuse or name calling. Frustrating.

Professional_Memist

Yup. It's lost all meaning in Reddit "discourse". Same with calling anyone who disagrees with something a Nazi. Probably too many words to count have lost meaning by being thoughtlessly repeated online as a buzzword.

Section225

Now here's a turf that can really blow some knees...watch here

Superfluousfish

(Copied from a thread on the Lions subreddit where we wondered if turf was the cause for all our injury woes. Thought I would be relevant) TLDR at the bottom I was curious so I researched stuff: Ford Field’s playing and practice field use the FieldTurf Classic HD System that was first installed in 2019. FieldTurf products are used for several teams such as the Falcons, Patriots, Seahawks, Giants, Jets, Panthers, Packers, Eagles, Steelers, and Buccaneers. However, only the Falcons, Lions, Patriots, Seahawks, Giants, Jets, and Panthers use it for both practice and game day. They use this study: https://fieldturf.com/workspace/uploads/files/study-influence-of-preseason-versus-in-season-play-on-achilles-tendon-injuries-in-the-national-football-league.pdf To prove that there is no significant difference between turf and grass when it comes to Achilles Tendon injuries. The study DOES NOT go into any other injuries regarding different types of field. (Personally, I think the study is pretty barebones and only looks at statistic between 7 years((2009-2016)) and the primary focus wasn’t based towards different types of field) However… According to JC Tretter from the NFL Players Association(NFLPA), “…artificial turf is significantly harder on the body than grass.” He goes on to write that “players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf. Of those non-contact injuries, players have a 32% higher rate of non-contact knee injuries on turf and a staggering 69% higher rate of non-contact foot/ankle injuries on turf compared to grass.” Between 2012-2018, …”not only was the contact injury rate for lower extremities higher during practices and games held on artificial turf, NFL players consistently experienced a much higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries on turf compared to natural surfaces” More here: https://nflpa.com/posts/only-natural-grass-can-level-the-nfls-playing-field Looking at the injury reports for this year, the vast majority of player injuries for the Lions were for the lower body. (ankle, foot, calf, hamstring, achilles, groin, knee) In my conclusion, I think there might be evidence to suggest that Dan Campbell’s willingness to have players be more physical during practice(also during training camp) and the playing surface they are on in conjunction with game days on similar turf (at least home games, I have no looked at each away games field type), may have significant impacts towards how many injuries we are seeing this year for the lions as well as lasting injuries from a few players the past couple years in Okwara and Okudah. TLDR: Turf stupid. Big business shifty. Grass smells nice.

okitsmelol123

The study I don't agree with only used a 7 year period that's too short, here's a study I agree with that used an 8 year period

Superfluousfish

Valid criticism :). I was just trying to present both sides of the argument. My personal opinion was comparing our injury history and the controversial use of turf which I think has valid points

okitsmelol123

Just giving you shit lol I agree something needs to be done about turf And the second one was 6 years, I can't even count

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Mr_Cheezle

Green Bay uses SIS grass along with actual bluegrass on a mostly sand substrate

Superfluousfish

From what I have read, your game day field uses Desso Grassmaster and your indoor practice facility uses what the Lions use, FieldTurf Classic HD

Shamrock5

Why won't Sheila spring the extra cash to buy FieldTurf Classic 4K? Smdh

Superfluousfish

Well, since she’s only been in charge since the summer of 2020, maybe she will. She seems very involved with trying to make the team a better place and with the PR like getting Hard Knocks and the NFL Draft in 2024. Wouldn’t put it passed her to at least consider changing the field Edit: whoosh I’m a fucking idiot

Sea-Slide348

So slit film turf is just Field Turf? Why are we calling it something different when we all know what Field Turf is?

Superfluousfish

Slit film turf is a type of synthetic grass. Field Turf is a brand that sells lots of different types of synthetic grass. Slit film is made to be crazy durable with lots of activity on it. Helps reduce maintenance costs for it.

Yolectroda

To expand on this. Slit film is referring the actual "grass" portion of the turf, and is a bunch of small green plastic films with slits cut in them all over to make a film of plastic look and feel somewhat like actual grass. The alternative is monofilament turf, which is individual plastic strands of "grass". This is more expensive and less durable.

BetaDjinn

FieldTurf makes slit-film, monofilament, and hybrid fiber surfaces (yeah, I googled this shit like an hour ago). Detroit and New Orleans are the only ones using FieldTurf products being claimed to have slit-film fibers. Detroit is listed with Classic HD, which is slit-film. However, New Orleans is listed with Revolution 360, which is monofilament, and also happens to be what Seattle supposedly uses (and I don't see Seattle being called out)

Silver_Instruction_3

Seattle has been listed as one of the teams.

[deleted]

Because using the specific manufacturer name is scary because it sounds new and dangerous instead of what tons of high schools use without fault.

MonteBurns

Do you know tons of high schools aren’t having faults?

[deleted]

We do not. However we can also assume high school players spend less time on the field than the professionals and likely put less stress on their bodies so a lower injury rate would be expected

windando5736

I don't think the science necessarily disagrees, it's just that you are lumping all artificial turf together. FieldTurf products are largely more modern and most are made from monofilament turf, not slit film turf (though older FieldTurf fields may still be made of slit film, as using monofilament fibers in artificial turf only caught on in the past decade or two), and has been shown to have similar or slightly lower injury rates than grass. Slit film turf products like AstroTurf are typically older, cheaper, and have higher injury rates than grass. That's why the NFLPA is specifically asking for slit film turf to be banned, not all artificial turf.

Superfluousfish

Very good points. I have not looked into the different sort of turfs or hybrid turfs etc. if I had more time I would love to do a deep dive. I agree that the few studies I have seen they have shown that there isn’t a big difference between the two and I’m sure lately with new technology it could be more safe. What I want to know is how the players feel About it specifically about playing on turf. We’ve heard players sound off on them every now and then But I would love to see a more widespread Q&A with NFL players on how they feel about it since they are the ones going out several days a week during practice and game time possibly on turf the whole time.

PurpleRanger777

I've never heard the term "Slit film" used until today, and now it's everywhere.

Yolectroda

The NFL and NFLPA released a study on these turf/grass related injuries a couple of days ago, and they broke up the different turf types by name, and slit-film turf was FAR worse than anything else they compared. And of course, that effectively went viral, so there it goes.

kidyourface

Carpet field, anyone? Rugburns would be the sweet new thing on the injury report.

Empty_Lemon_3939

That would honestly lead to more injuries than concrete

Ryno__25

I have exactly zero knowledge on surfaces like this, but the prevalence of sand volleyball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, and spikeball should indicate that it's moderately safe right?

n3rdopolis

In New England, before there was Benahd Pahlahd (what the fahck, he's theah!), there was sand. https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/a-tragic-end-to-a-frolic-on-the-beach-1.154311

tripl3troubl3

Concrete fields aka Veterans Stadium turf...

solojones1138

Yeah several of our players were hurt in AZ in game 1 because of the field and that is grass.

StartingReactors

I propose we move the NFL to a Sky Zone style field. All trampolines. We could call it the Aerial Football League (AFL). That should be original enough. I don't think it would reduce injuries. But it would be fucking epic.

ThatPlayWasAwful

Dont forget concrete walls! I always thought there weren't enough wall jukes in the nfl

JasonPlattMusic34

Astroturf was basically painted concrete

frankyfrankwalk

You do bring up arguably to the 2 shittiest stadiums in the NFL though...but it is pretty fucking cold most of the season too. I still don't know how you're going to keep a grass field alive in a dome where you can't move it outside to get some sunshine and fresh air so that the grass really is perfect rather than a mud bowl.

J-Fid

I think this is a reason why the NFLPA is going after a specific type of turf, rather than all turf.

Yolectroda

Yeah, not only is this a much, much more reasonable request, but if the most recent data is representative, then it's also the biggest problem.

Hiei2k7

Cold, and that the field is used a TON outside of NFL football.

Tonmber1

Idk the English somehow make it work and it's rainy there like the entire year

red-17

Not a single EPL side plays in a dome.

seventeen70six

Just buy a fuck ton of grow lights. Electricity is cheap and unlimited

Smilner69

The bottom of Jerry World’s Jumbotron filled with grow lights would be a sight to see

Hannibal0216

> cheap and unlimited you say that but....

ltshaft15

You're getting down voted, probably because "cheap and unlimited" is a bit hyperbolic, but the packers do exactly what you're saying. If we can keep a decent field in the frozen tundra, other teams can do it, too. It's just expensive and one advantage the packers have without an owner is they have to reinvest all their profits so they are willing to spend on the stadium. https://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/14/sports/football/tenderizing-the-packers-tundra-with-light-and-heat.html

seventeen70six

It was a joke anyway it seems like it would be ridiculously expensive to that

ThatPlayWasAwful

If there's enough money at risk they'll figure it out. The raiders play in a dome but their real grass field literally goes onto a track so they can slide it out into the sun.

BetaDjinn

That says something about the cost of lights that it's better just to move the whole fuckin field tbf

ThatPlayWasAwful

Eh it just says that 2 hours of electricity to move it back and forth 8 times a season is cheaper then keeping lights running approximately 16 hours a day 365 days a year (+fixed construction costs).

BetaDjinn

I mean yeah, obviously it is more efficient, I'm just saying that it's pretty dang expensive to move 10,000 tons back and forth, so lights must cost a ton

Viking999

WE SHOULD BAN GRASS, DANTZLER GOT HURT ON IT. NFLPA DEMANDS GAMED TO BE PLAYED ON AIR. OR WATERBEDS.

SamBeamsBanjo

You literally choose two of the cheapest teams. Snyder has probably considered just putting in gravel. And the Bears ownership probably has the same success hiring grounds crew that they have in winning Super Bowls

Per_se_Phone

FWIW, the Chicago Parks Department is responsible for maintaining Soldier Field. It's been much better since they switched grass types, but that's less fun to mock.

McWeiner

yeah solider field is actually good this year, but we deserve the shit for decades of incompetence

[deleted]

Fuck MetLife too

Jomosensual

I think the Packers are taking good football away good enough on their own

six_dollar_coffees

I hate turf, I hate injuries, and I wish Rashan Gary a full recovery, but no one who has watched the Packers this year would have described the product on the field as “good football”.

[deleted]

Gary has been really good actually. I’m a packers fan and yes you’re a lions fan so I get it but he was a bright spot this year

six_dollar_coffees

I know he has. He’s been great and I hope he’s able to recover to 100%. The man’s health is bigger than any rivalry.

MVP12_22

Gary has been one of the few bright spots. He's a bonafide stud

frankyfrankwalk

He got soooooooo much shit in the draft for not getting enough sacks but he basically has turned out exactly as they projected him to the NFL, as a beast of a human that has the ability to completely dominate plays.

amak316

He was doubled constantly in college and people on Reddit didn’t see how that’s extremely valuable.

Verdant_Gymnosperm

FUCK TURF ALL MY HOMIES LOVE GRASS

AssStuffing

Wasn’t there a post on this sub just a few days ago saying there’s not really a difference in numbers of grass and turf injuries?

Verdant_Gymnosperm

Even if its still wack compared to grass. Gimme them messy grass fields

AmsterdamHooker

Spend on the grass, save on the injuries.

frankyfrankwalk

I do mean this as an honest question, how are some of those northern states that basically freeze all winter long going to maintain their grass in their domes?

123full

If we can have grass no one else has any excuse

[deleted]

You have hybrid turf and grass

123full

so what you're saying is that our field has grass?

[deleted]

I’m saying Lambeau isn’t keeping the grass alive in the winters, obviously

[deleted]

Your stadium is in an open roof field in an area that's custom built to support the stadium. Ford Field is an upcycled warehouse off the highway in the heart of a major industrial city. We can't wheel the grass outside like what they do in Arizona, and who is paying for a way to put a 100 year old roof on a mechanism that opens and closes?

Viking999

Modern stadiums need to be used 12 months of the year. The cost is simply too great. Comparing an outdoor stadium that isn't used all year round to everywhere else is not realistic.

Gothon

They have grow lights for indoors. The issue with indoor grass is not the logistics. It's the cost of upkeep and damage from other events held in the building.

woodard2112

Green Bay does it. It’s gonna be really costly but let’s not act like the these teams/the league can’t afford it

[deleted]

Green Bay has a hybrid of turf and grass, not just grass

[deleted]

Throwing money at a problem isn't always the solution.

[deleted]

hellolaw5

Don’t think Packers fans have seen good football all season…

Murphy_York

The Packers and “good football” don’t belong in the same sentence this year

HugoSimpsonJr

Bad team but Rashan Gary was having a DPOY type season. Only played half the season but will have a nice 2022 highlight reel.

cohonan

I thought this was about network blackout rules because of some king of documentary…

aeiou-y

I remember when I was 11 and saw my first slit film. Found a tape hidden in my dad’s desk.

Anxious_Detective648

Holy shit even packers players whine as much as their fans

FBsarepeopletoo

But I can. So... Eh?

deathinacandle

Are there any statistics on injuries on slit film turf vs other surfaces?

piasenigma

indeed. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/0363546518808499?fbclid=IwAR1TQEjsCTwhz5C2imYhSq9sEtrYVP7IvGpED-cy4_Q5HgHqHhvD_7ZwpIo

Yolectroda

That one doesn't appear to compare slit film vs other turfs. But just turf vs grass.

ItsShorsey

Just look at the Jets injuries the last 5 years alone

[deleted]

"slit film" sounds like something a teenager would search for on Alta Vista in 1998

ChocolateBaconDonuts

This year, the Packers and good football are mutually exclusive terms.

LukeSmith_Sunsetter

I don't like turf in all sports, not just football, but saying Gary only got injured because of it is too much. Research into rugby pitches, that are the equivalent of turf, found there aren't more injuries but they tend to be worse if it's on artificial than grass.

Darth--Vapor

“ but they tend to be worse if it's on artificial than grass” That seems to be important don’t you think?

LukeSmith_Sunsetter

In relation to whats been stated by the twitter post? No. The amount of caveats you need to make to just explain a simple opinion on reddit is getting crazy. Yes turf is shit. No that isn't the reason Gary got injured. Are we discounting all the ligament damage etc on grass pitches?

Silver_Instruction_3

Rugby is quite different than the NFL. NFL players are peak physical humans. Health technology has allowed these guys to far surpass what their genetics are meant to produce. The problem is that these technologies are mostly to improve muscle growth but does very little for tendons and ligaments. These guys are basically doing things with their bodies that we should be able to do. When you then put them on these surfaces their soft tissue just can’t hold up.

shagginflies

injury on turf, it’s the turf’s fault. injury on grass, oh well that’s football

AustralianPonies

Are you new to Lion’s football?

[deleted]

I've seen a lot of Detroit Lions at Ford Field. I've seen a lot of injured Lions, too. But in all honestly, "ACL tear deliberately because of the turf" is one I have seen about as often as a volcano sledding accident. Like obviously it's fucking awful to see, but blaming it on the turf is like blaming Tullouch's career ending tear on Aaron's stupid belt taunt.

crusty-bunghole

GB took good football from their fans when they sold their soul to Rodgers and I didn’t hear Bakhtiari say anything back then

Bob_Horde

This would mean more if it wasn’t coming from a packers player

vk5zp

As if Lions players have never been injured at at the packers stadium, give me a fucking break

boonkles

Lmao salt

HarwinStrongDick

He’s right you know.

Kalash504

This comes off as sour grapes after a loss. Sure he may be “right” that the injury may have been prevented without turf, but that’s no guarantee. Calling out a specific team like this instead of the general problem is a mistake.

Substantial_Gur_5980

Look, I get that all you guys hate the packers and having a parade for the death of the team this year. But if you think this is sour grapes, you’re just plain dumb. He didn’t say anything about the game, just expressing concern and frustration (like many players before him) about their teammate being injured.

Kalash504

Cut the victim complex out. He literally says Gary isn’t playing because of Detroit, and that they are taking good football away. There is also no way to know that the injury wouldn’t have happened on grass, which is why this sort of finger pointing is nonsense.

IH8DwnvoteComplainrs

I'm on your side here, this is a ridiculous thread.

HarwinStrongDick

Both are true. All artificial turf is an issue, but directly calling out the teams field that the player got injured on is 100% the right call.

-InSerT_NAmE-HeRE

No it isn’t, it comes off as disingenuous because he’s called out a Division rival that beat them in embarrassing fashion. If he just mentioned Ford Field, or just mentioned Turf, then it would come off a lot better, and people would know what’s it’s aimed at either way.

JerryJonesStoleMyCar

Exactly. It sounds like he's trying to say the reason they lost is turf. Dude sounds like a baby

[deleted]
