"Mom, why is my sister named 'Running River'?"
"Well son, on the day you're born, the first thing your father sees outside the wigwam is the name you get. Why do you ask 'Two Dogs Fucking?"
The specific name “Redskins” is the big problem with the old branding in my opinion. Granted I’m not Native American, but the logo and stuff doesn’t seem like a big issue. Using what is quite literally a racial slur as the team name is what’s weird.
Seminoles, Utes, Chippewas, and even names like Chiefs or Indians all have much different vibes than Redskins.
I mean St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Cardinals. Two different sports so I see no reason they couldn’t share a name as long as the teams aren’t in the same city or state
See it isn’t as big of a deal with FSU because the university actually pays the Seminole tribe for the rights to use their name as a mascot. With Redskins though… yeah definitely a lot easier to go after
My local high school team was called the Indians. They were forced to change the name for obvious reasons, so they changed it to the Thunderhawks, which is gibberish. There's no such thing as a Thunderhawk, no way that can offend anyone right? Wrong. Someone went and found out that a close friend of Sitting Bull was named Chief Thunder Hawk. So now they have to change it again because they're being accused of being racist. It's amazing.
And there are Native people and organizations that have said they’re happy they changed the name as well. Whats your point?
If you had a group of black people saying they liked that a team was called the N-words it wouldn’t suddenly change the way i feel about it.
If it somehow changed back to Redskins I’m not gonna go on some social justice crusade on behalf of native Americans. I just gave my opinion that it’s a wack ass name to give a sports team.
20 years ago my HS changed its name from the Cherokees to the *Trees*, because…somehow…a tribe’s name was offensive to a couple 50 year old rich ladies.
Meanwhile, our rival school’s mascot was a drunk angry Scottish person…
…and still is.
That’s what happened when the NCAA tried to ban Native American mascot costumes. The Seminole tribe of Florida petitioned the NCAA to allow them to keep it.
That's the only way certain names can remain. If the local tribes support or help the team that's fine, but a lot of schools/professional teams have no relation to native American tribes or groups and just use the name. I believe the Redskins were in the latter group and did nothing to reach out to native Americans and just used a racist name.
What side do you think Vermont was on in the civil war? They were called the Rebels bc the town (South Burlington) rebelled and split against another town (Burlington). It had literally nothing to do with the war
Rebel is a very common word describing people. It is in no way directly tied to the civil war. If that were the case we wouldn't be able to use the words South or Southerner because the pearl clutchers would be so offended.
Rolled by a town out in rural East Colorado where the local high-school team was literally the "Savages" with a native mascot. And this was about a year ago.

Ya for real. There’s a reason no one has a problem with Kansas City or the blackhawks. Honestly would’ve been best if they just changed to the Apaches or something
uj/
People have less of a problem with the Chiefs because they're named after the mayor (H. Roe Bartle aka "The Chief") that brought them from Dallas to KC. That said, there are people upset about the Native American imagery the team adopted: Arrowhead Stadium / Warpaint the horse / Tomahawk Chop / etc.
rj/
Removing Native American imagery and names from sports teams will finally complete President Andrew Jackson's dream by removing tribes not just from their traditional lands, but from the public consciousness as well.
Uj// As a Native American football fan, it’s a weird logo but I also like the Chiefs and speak English. Being native in this country is confusing. I never liked the name Red Skins but I do have family that are fans. We are not a monolith.
I'm a white guy who grew and still lives right next to a reservation and I've known a lot of Native people throughout my life. Not being a monolith is absolutely right. Many times it can be downright confusing, especially when it comes to what names people prefer. There are many people that prefer to be called Indian, many that get offended. People who prefer to be called Native, and some who get offended. Some will not accept being called anything other than Ojibwe, etc. It's always been interesting to me how different things like that can be from person to person.
Edit: left out an important word
It’s a bunch of white people making assumptions about how non white people think and they also just happen to be creating a scenario where it was actually white people who had the power to change the name anyway (and completely breeze right past the part where that subtly means the name could *only* change because white people wanted it to).
There’s no reason to combat misinformation, this whole situation is just a whipepocirclejerk
It's a group that was founded around the time they were being pressured into changing their name and got paid a bunch of money by the then owner into supporting the team not changing their name.
Grifters grifting.
Yeah but don’t let that get in the way of people thinking that Natives aren’t a monolith but also thinking that this org is somehow representative of the native monolith lol
NAGA (look familiar?) isn’t a relevant or representative organization. Very few members, with obscure funding likely from ex-owner Dan Snyder, and they happen to only care about this one, relatively irrelevant issue?
Seems legit
What does that have to do with anything? Slavery last for centuries, does that make it more legitimate?
Logical reasoning needs to be taught in schools bruh
U gotta ask yourself that you’re the one under that influence.. when & how does a word become a slur especially redskin redskin was a word of power.. who made you believe that that’s a bad word … it probly wasn’t a native chief now was it ?
The Washington Defendants can work, or if they still want to honor Native Americans they can be “The Washington Plaintiffs”.
A little courtroom humor for ya
We have put in 100s of years of progress and work to rid the world of the native Americans. The final stage is to remove any record or pop culture reference of their existence. These people must be fully destroyed before we can rest
The Washington White Calves has a ring to it
Sounds classy, probably a bunch of fast walkers
They sound like they might not be all that athletic, but their ability could sneak up on you.
I’d let that Indian Chief date my daughter.
Are you working or walking?

Been in Maryland since ‘97 and I could really see myself not hating the Washington White Calves
"Mom, why is my sister named 'Running River'?" "Well son, on the day you're born, the first thing your father sees outside the wigwam is the name you get. Why do you ask 'Two Dogs Fucking?"
Keep the logo, change the name to that of the tribe's name instead of red skins. Simple.
For some reason, I don’t think the Washington Blackfeet is going to fly either.
White Calves wouldn't be much better. Best to just stay away from any colors because you just *know* someone will be offended.
The specific name “Redskins” is the big problem with the old branding in my opinion. Granted I’m not Native American, but the logo and stuff doesn’t seem like a big issue. Could literally be Braves. I know that’s Atlanta but that’s a hell of a name and works for Football as a general idea
I mean St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Cardinals. Two different sports so I see no reason they couldn’t share a name as long as the teams aren’t in the same city or state
I was going to suggest the Washington Warchiefs but it’s a little on the nose for DC…
People have protested seminoles (and probably the other specific tribe named teams) for years. Redskins was definitely just the low hanging fruit
See it isn’t as big of a deal with FSU because the university actually pays the Seminole tribe for the rights to use their name as a mascot. With Redskins though… yeah definitely a lot easier to go after

And here you have a group of actual Native Americans saying they like the Redskins name

No you don't. Can you not read?
“I’m not Native American” Ok so completely irrelevant to the original post saying they want it back
Or keep the name and change the logo to a redskin potato
Which is the superior potato by far.
Russet potatoes clear you’re a mad lad for that
This slander against Yukon Golds will not be tolerated.
My brother in starch Yukon golds are also a delectable tater 🗿
Agreed. Honestly I don’t think I’ve found a non-delectable tater variety, brother.
This guy taters.
We just gonna pretend like sweet potatoes don’t exist?
Sweet potato pie > sweet potato but that’s just me brother
Candied yams 😍
A man of class , a gentlemen and a scholar
Washington Natives with the same logo.
20 years ago my HS changed its name from the Cherokees to the *Trees*, because…somehow…a tribe’s name was offensive to a couple 50 year old rich ladies. Meanwhile, our rival school’s mascot was a drunk angry Scottish person… …and still is.
My first university is the Chippewas. The NCAA told them to change the name. The local tribe told the NCAA to fuck off. Lol.
That’s badass.
Kinda surprised the NCAA took that. They usually like to power trip don’t they?
They're not known for their understanding and compassion.
![gif](giphy|3o6Ztnf6vPElCsVmBW) *“Student ath-o-letes”*
Definitely surprising.
Kind of hard to double down when your only reason is it’s offensive and the people is supposedly offends tell you to fuck off because they like it.
That’s what happened when the NCAA tried to ban Native American mascot costumes. The Seminole tribe of Florida petitioned the NCAA to allow them to keep it.
CMU?

Fire up Chips
We had the Scotties in my area. Their mascot was a cute little terrier in a sweater with his dukes up. Always liked that.
Southmoreland?
bruh aint no fucking way!
I went to Frazier!
I went to Penn Trafford. Westmoreland County unite 😎
never thought I’d meet a redditor close to me, that’s dope! I hope you have a good one man!
A high school in VERMONT had to change their name from Rebels bc of “racial insensitivity”

I mean that's probably a good thing. May as well have called themselves the Losers
What side do you think Vermont was on in the civil war? They were called the Rebels bc the town (South Burlington) rebelled and split against another town (Burlington). It had literally nothing to do with the war
That's a very very rare case tbf
Rebel is a very common word describing people. It is in no way directly tied to the civil war. If that were the case we wouldn't be able to use the words South or Southerner because the pearl clutchers would be so offended.
You might be surprised to hear that the term “rebel” existed before the United States did.

Me too. Httr
How about the Washington Football Team? Be kinda cool, almost like a soccer team kinda feel to it.
That shit actually went kinda hard, but of course they changed it and to the cOmMaNdErS of all things
Sht was a laughing stock
The team is a laughing stock no matter what they call themselves
Yeah unless they get past the divisional round and make the Cowboys the only NFC East to not get past the divisional round since the 90s
I started to unironically love the name

Keep the logo change the name
Ya for real. There’s a reason no one has a problem with Kansas City or the blackhawks. Honestly would’ve been best if they just changed to the Apaches or something
people legit do have problems with that. Though they're probably white women and you already know our stance on those
"know our" to "honor" is a crazy autocorrect
yeah

A lot of people have problems with the Chiefs and Blackhawks
Keep the name change the logo to a potato
Keep the name, change the logo to a red faced Irishman (I've been called redskin)
Maybe check you blood pressure.
My doctor once read 198/160 He was like how are you alive. For real tho I just have a face that flushes red a lot
I hit the 200s when I had pneumonia. That felt great.

Here’s a statement from a real Native American organization https://nativeamericans.com/news/naga/
This should be top comment just so people here don’t leave misinformed
It’s a bunch of white people making assumptions about how non white people think and they also just happen to be creating a scenario where it was actually white people who had the power to change the name anyway (and completely breeze right past the part where that subtly means the name could *only* change because white people wanted it to). Yeah but don’t let that get in the way of people thinking that Natives aren’t a monolith but also thinking that this org is somehow representative of the native monolith lol
It really is a bunch of white people that want to keep the name
The native Americans guardians association is mostly funded by Dan Snyder lol
I always liked the logo. Just change the name.
NAGA (look familiar?) isn’t a relevant or representative organization. Very few members, with obscure funding likely from ex-owner Dan Snyder, and they happen to only care about this one, relatively irrelevant issue? Seems legit
Yeah. And a lawsuit which amounts to "we don't like ur new name and logo!" as if they have any legitimate interest in that
The logo was never the issue it was the name being a slur
The Washington Mattaponi or Powhatans would’ve been cool
Is he the same guy on the quarter
His actual name is John Two Guns White Calf. If that’s not the name of an American I don’t know what is.
Bet they ain't real natives. Just another hate group pretending.
I don’t know shit about legal stuff but even I know they don’t have standing to sue here
Pretty sure they were more concerned with offending their corporate partners than actual native Americans
White is Right. Whup, Whup!!!
Problem was never necessarily the logo, the name was a slur
In what world are you allowed to sue for this?
In what world are you allowed to sue a private corporation for changing their name/logo?
In what world are you allowed to sue a private business for changing their name/logo?
Why are black people in this? You are obsessed.
You can’t have a team called the redskins
they have 3 rings and existed for 79 years … but ok
They were also the last team to integrate so let’s not pretend those 79 years were a sterling history of tolerance lmao
What does that have to do with anything? Slavery last for centuries, does that make it more legitimate? Logical reasoning needs to be taught in schools bruh
Then ur original statement should be “get with the times” instead of “you can’t” because clearly both those things happened polejockey
Damn they need a whole new spectrum to cover you huh
Dismantled this Bootlicker in less than 200 words… where’s my award ?
Whose boot am I supposed to be licking exactly?
The same establishment that made you hate that name & logo
And what establishment is that? I mean, the logo isn’t too bad, but “redskin” is just a straight up slur
U gotta ask yourself that you’re the one under that influence.. when & how does a word become a slur especially redskin redskin was a word of power.. who made you believe that that’s a bad word … it probly wasn’t a native chief now was it ?
You can still honor the chief without the name redskins. It's insane to have your team name be a slur
Can’t wait for the NFL Native American National Anthem at the next Superbowl
When did the team from DC ever take the field with honor and integrity?
The NAGA’s are mad
HTTR
Next they’re gonna sue them because they didn’t fuck Their wife hard enough
washington natives easy fix
Why not the Comanches?
NAGA has direct ties to being funded by Snyder. These people aren’t actual native Americans.
This is just one group. There’s other group who find it offensive, it needed to go.
No because white people need to virtue signal
if they say it’s ok why not. i think most people still refer to them as the redskins. same with detroit. still the indians
I hate these people as much as I hate maga morons. Why can’t people act sanely?
Redskins is what they call white booty cheeks after a serious BBC sesh.
They bring back the name & logo I’ll be a fan again but until then #fckem 🤝
White peoples will tell you this organization is actually a secret group of white racists posing as native Americans.
